try a reboot; reinstall drivers; reinstall GTA IV etc. etc.
i've purposely clocked all 3 too high in a little experiment (to see what the voltage affected and how), and they confirm what i saw during the 169.04 driver runs and what i wrote above.
freezing (or the screen gets inverted, or boxes appear) is due to mem. both cs and cod4 and mass effect crashed a few minutes in.
pixel sized arifacts (usually on high-res textures) is due to core. start as T on dust2 and take a good close up look of the double doors at long A. youll see what i mean.
triangles are due to shaders. the elevators on the space city in ME, or looking toward the arch above T spawn on dust2 for long periods of time will show.
no stuttering on any test i did.
-
-
for anyone else having the stuttering issue: this is normal. i say normal, since asus' acpi table doesn't compensate for the quicker increase in heat, resulting in throttling which appears in the form of stuttering (jumping from 3dE -> 3d and back). to do this, someone would have to figure out which module (probably one of the Fx user-defined ones) has the table, and change the minimum temp that the fan would speed up at.
if you want higher clocks, post the numbers. -
I have been EXTREMELY interested in this process, but can't get nibitor to work correctly, error 1275. I've breifly looked it up on here because I have vista 64, but the 9700m gt's the same. I also downloaded that vista inf file like page 12 but i don't know how to use it.. HELP!
-
Another update: Using bios 740/1800/1060 now and every once in a while I get mem related artifacts. I believe I could push the core even higher. Overclocking the shaders is new to me, does it have any major impact on overall performance?
For now I could try 750/1800 (or higher?)/1050. Downclocking the mem a little from current clocks will hopefully get rid of the artifacting. Its nothing big, I could probably live with this as it is. No artifacting in 3dmark06 or CoD4, only in GTA. Could be my brain playing games on me also (or the game is just buggy) :O -
basically, the only game i've found that can test artifacting is cs:source, maybe because its less demanding and can take a higher error threshold (only game for which too-high-clocked experiment holds true for). mass effect and CoD4 just crash (at much higher than normal rates, usually with full-screen random artifacting. good indication of stability though). if it were up to me, i would say its not your brain and the clocks are too high. atm, im running 725/1800/1043 with no crashes yet.
for anyone else running the higher clocks, make sure to test your system for several hours. thats how long it takes before you will see anything, and it will save you time finding your old max again.

Downloaded MMTOOL v3.19- are you allowed to post general directions as to where I may find my 9700m gt bios on my PC? It's probably a hidden file so I'm not having any luck finding it. Thanks for a quick response thalanix
-
it's part of the bios, i have the steps outlined in general http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4265412&postcount=111 (method 2). only difference is that nibitor now supports the 9700, so no need for a hex editor.
1850 shaders ARE stable with minimal artifacting (maybe i saw triangles, maybe i just wanted to see triangles). almost a full day of cod4 and burning eyes, running 725/1850/1043 stable (when i should have been studying, f*** you midterms :/). if anyone wants to try, be my guest. afaik, shaders can be overclocked with ntune on all systems and drivers. -
Hi, I didin't know where to put it, in CPU overclock thread or this one...
It"s just a bump to report what i noticed on my G50v-043k (p8600 and 9700mGT). :
- On AC line, cpu multiplier is set to 9
- On battery, cpu multiplier is set to 6
- On the desktop, PCI-E is set to x1
- Ingame, PCI-E is set to x16
Is there a way to lock PCI-E to x16 ? I suspect it's not switching all the time.
Also, I didn't know it was possible to hot-change cpu multiplier. I think it's the way DC2 overclocks the cpu, not altering fsb. What you guys are thinking about it ? -
i would suspect that pci-e active channel control has something to do with powermizer, so the only way to keep it at x16 is to turn off powermizer (and effectively keep the clocks maxed).
FIDs 0..4 (multipliers 6..9) are default from intel. there have been reports of multiple people seeing 10, so i suggested some stuff.
in short, you need vista x64, several minutes with a debugger (olly+phantom will work) and directconsole, a basic run/loadtime loader, and an interface for some command line arguments to pass to the SetStep and OvrClk functions. -
-
running xp, so i dont have WEI (or the required vista libs to get directconsole working). which is why i suggested ways on how it can be done.
some things i've noticed (t9400), including why rmclock reports the throttle to be 95%:
shows 2528 core CPU speed and 2394+-20 throttle.
according to spec, montevina has a 1066 FSB (266.5 x 4).
a multiplier or 9 will give 2394, the throttle speed reported by rmclock.
@Omne: can you get a screenshot of cpu-z (and rmclock side by side if you want), but when the multi is at 9x? from what it looks like, directconsole raises the fsb AND multiplier. -
Maybe silly suggestion, I only glanced through the info, but isn't this elusive 10x multiplier, the IDA feature of Santa Rosa & later platforms?
Random google link:
http://www.techarp.com/showfreebog.aspx?lang=0&bogno=412 -
could be. i just assumed it to be disabled as rmclock has the option greyed out.
-
Maybe the option is disabled just because RMClock is not supporting it (I know it has issues with IDA and SuperLFM specifically). But it may still be active independently of RMClock.
-
my old G1S has the option to enable/disable both, so idk. theres also no IDA index entry, so im pretty sure they removed it from montevina boards.
-
Hmm well I didn't know that. If IDA is no longer available on Montevina and has not been replaced by a similar feature, then the 10x multiplier becomes a mystery again.
-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=168387
This feature is available only on T7700, the T7500, the T7300 and the T7100.
a mystery yet again. -
Hi there,
I'm very interesseted in overclocking my Asus G50V-AS057C ( klick me!!! ) but i don't want to change the bios of my 9700mGT.
Is there any chance to overclock this card only with some kind of software.
atm i'm using windows xp32 and the dox optimized 182.05.
and i installed the nvidia_system_tools. but i'm only able to rise the shader glock. But some sites ago i read about changing also core and mem clock...why it dont works for me? when i try to change it...it flips back to stock.
my 3dmark06 score is 6800 with no oc
and 6978 with shaders at 1700
Sorry for my bad english -
it doesn't work because the bios locks overclocking.
uninstall nv system tools, uninstall the 182.05 drivers followed up with Driver Sweeper, and try 169.04 from lv2g (it only works for xp 32 + 169.04 from what i remember).
keep in mind switching back to drivers that old will probably negate any increase you get from overclocking. -
thx for the quick response i'll try it.
is it posible to overclock the cpu...because under xp i can't use direct console 2. -
with the 169.04 driver im able to set the core and mem clocks. but im unable to open my saved profiles
.

Hi, I have a couple of questions :
I just installed 182.46 Dox drivers, and i'm using 705 Thalanix BIOS. These drivers are running fine but hot :
- after 20mn of Furmark (stability test), GPU reaches 90°,
- it reaches 92-93° after a few hours playing GTA4.
I see no artifacts, freezes or something weird, but is it safe to run with thoses temps ?
Second question : even if I obtain between 25-35fps in GTA4, I'm feeling a heavy 'lag effect'. Does someone else notice this, or is there something wrong with my computer ? -
original threshold is set to 105, mine have it changed it 95.
is it safe? i dont know. ive been hitting 93C with 725/1800/1035, at which point the fan changes to its highest state (yes, it never really ran at 100%. if you look for an 8 byte integer in the acpi porition of the bios, you should find a 93 after a 65 and 75 or so). -
Is it not possible to lower the 100% fan value, to something like 85° ?
In this case fan should spin faster on lower temps, preventing these high temps ? -
the heavy lag _could_ be due to the temps, or the drivers. installed 182.46 (from 182.20), so ill see if anything changes.
the 65/75/93 sequence was probably coincedental, since in practice the bios checks at least one other set of temps (probably CPU thermal and GPU). if i have time this weekend, ill look into it again. -
Yep i think what you say is logic, as GPU and CPU share the same fan. So the fan activation is certainly a mix of the two.
That would be very nice if you could lower the 100% activation, and it's not a problem if you have to lower the CPU too. Mine is running at 72° while GPU is 92-93°, so some lower temps couldn't hurt ^^
What I can say about this heavy lag-in_GTA4_only is that it occurs in every res/graph settings i tried, even on low res when GPU temp is under 86°. And I notice no artifacts. So I think it's only due to a very bad coding or CPU hog, not my not_so_high overclocking. -
i dont have the tools with me (everythings stored at home), but if someone has mmtool + a decent hex editor (winhex should have a search by integer function), take a look through module 10 (i think).
-
I'm not familiar with bios edit or hex manipulating, but I can't find any module 10 in the bios, or something about ACPI. But I found the first module 20, the one used for GPU overclocking.
Is there something in module description/name I could search for ? -
if theres no mod 10, then im guessing asus has their own acpi code (in a Fx module). so the only way of finding it would be to extract all the F modules an search for integers in all of them.
to find the original temp values, have RivaTuner / RMClock update rates at 250ms, and just observe will running prime95 or furmark. im in class til late today, so i cant take a look til saturday. -
No problem Thalanix, there's no hurry at all, take your time
I'll try to see what I can do myself tonight, and I'll let here my resutls/probems, if there are any...
Thanks anyways -
the stuttering looks like a driver issue. cold boot, cod4 @ broadcast (outside), drops to 20ish when it should be above 35, with some stuttering that shouldnt be temp related.
edit: no problem with 182.08. -
some analysis on the F/custom modules:
2B - no idea.
35 - CompuTrace. 2 instances of this module.
55 - some kind of win32 program.
F0 - EZflash. looks like standard x86.
F1 - has the header ASUS. will take another look tomorrow.
interesting data between 0x009450 and 0x00D3E0.
F6 - has the string Device VM Rom Loader. another look tomorrow.
F7 - asus-branded bios version and date.
F8 - JFIF header. the rainbow coloured asus logo (forgot where i saw it before)
F9 - contains the RIFF-WAV header, but not in the expected place. could be the scary sound that happens when keeping audio disabled in bios, then enabling it after a day (both original and moded). maybe theres such thing as RAW-WAV?
FA - the startup sound. replacing it with a similar sized, mute track is a better option then removing the module completely (flashed + works)
edit: uploaded the dsdt info (both the data and decompiled in dsl/text). the dsdt table is found in 1B.

Whoops, I'm afraid I couldn't help you with this...
By the way, when you test bios mods, do you proceed with trial and error ? It seems really dangerous ^^
And I wondered something else : when modding the BIOS, you recommand copying the original bios to a USB stick. How do you recover the bios from the usb stick when flash fails (and then I assume there's no post, no bios setup and no display ???) ? -
trial and error all the way
i have both the modded and original on C:/, as well as written instructions on getting to them through ezflash should something go wrong. if something DOES go wrong though (never has for me, hopefully never will), your best bet is to pray the 08 bootblock is intact, as it will search for a file called AMIBOOT.ROM on all removable devices.
for the fan mod, you can do a test on windows. i dont know how many fan speeds there are, if there are 6 i would use the first set (the 0x70 looks more like an emergency state then a speed), if there are 4 i would use the second. make the top 2 speeds look the same, since there are a dozen instances of 0x5D (0d93), each of which might be the temp.
using iasl (there should be one on microsoft's site, i know its in the repos for ubuntu), rebuild the dsdt after changing it, and compare&change the entry HKLM/Hardware/ACPI/DSDT/G50V0/G50V0100/00000000/000000 (or just copy/paste the entire thing in). if it bluescreens on start, F8 -> "Last Known Good Configuration". ill try this tomorrow.
changed table (bios), reinstalled ubuntu (changing ../dsdt caused a kernel panic for some reason), no rejections. i dont remember the original fan settings, so ill apply the reg changes to windows and edit back.
also, could someone using a modded 210 bios respond: if you keep audio disabled in bios (via advanced -> IO security) for a while (24 hours+), and enable it, does the sound of doom occur? ive made a true mute 11KHz WAV to replace it, but i need to be sure that im not the only one getting it.
march 31: fan still turns up higher @ 93C GPU. ill try changing the 7-step to have the top two at 0x70. maybe try one of the 4-series some time this week (finals come so quick...) -
- slow speed under 75°
- 75° : first step
- 85° : second step
- 93° : third step.
As you lowered the GPU trotlling to 95° in your modded bios, il would be nice to lower those temps also. I think lowering them by 8° could be really efficient -
after cleaning out the dust and fan it doesnt go over 88C (ill try again on a warmer day), but these are what i got:
state 0 -> 1 = 75C
state 1 -> 0 = 63C
state 1 -> 2 = 85C
state 2 -> 1 = 78C
unfortunately, theres no "list" of upper and lower thresholds (at least not with the values we found), so it might take a while.
a little bit of progress: the code that manages the fan is at lines 8143 to 8258 (maybe). it calculates something based on a local variable, which im guessing is passed from elsewhere. find the elsewhere, and we might have the thresholds.
if the highest fan setting can't bring them lower than 95C, then having the highest RPM earlier won't matter. it's easy enough to change the threshold/clocks since nibitor 4.8 supports the 9700M. -
Which overclock are you using ?
I'm using the 720 one, my GPU can go up to 91 in Furmark, 89 max ingame. I never went above 93, because at 93° the fan speeds up and lowers the temps, then slows down, temp go up, and it continues... So I thought that lowering the 93° threshold could lower th max temp. -
725/1800/1036 (not on the list i dont think). 89C in furmark. room temp feels like its ~20C.
-
Did you remove completly the fan/dissipator block to clean it ? I wanted to do it, and replace thermal pads with thermal grease, but hesitate to void my warranty just for this...
You have a very nice temps/clocks combo, I'd like to have the same ^^ -
i ran out of compressed air so i used a vacuum cleaner (which could reverse + channel airflow) to blow air through the radiator in both directions (while making sure the fan is taped down and not spinning).
the rest (hdd's, under the hdds, radiator blades, both sides of the fan blades, RAM, plastic cover) was done by vacuum cleaner + paintbrush. -
I've overclocked my 9700gt to 730/1800/1030 and after playin 20min GTA IV my max temp was 91ºC so i want do downclock the vga card.
I've modified the bios with mmtools to 700/1800/1000 but when i try to update the bios with winflash it says that i cant update because the bios revision is the same.
Can someone help to update with ezflash or something like this? -
copy the new bios to somewhere you can remember (idealy, just C:\ will do), restart, F1 to go into BIOS, Advanced tab, EZflash, follow the path to where you put it, start the flash. it will restart again by itself.
also, what room temp are you running those at? 725/1800/1035 runs >89C in furmark for me @ 21C room. when was the last time you cleaned it of dust? -
Sorry if my english is misunderstood. -
710/940/1780, [email protected], XP 32. Gpu max 91° in GTA4, max 89° in Furmark (extreme burning mode).
Room temp is the same as yours (i think), I cleaned the dust recently, but it could be dirty again (lot of cutting/soldering/dremelling on the desk last few weeks^^)
If you're interested, we made a comparative table of nvidia drivers performance on our forums : http://play-arena.go-forum.net/asus-g50v-f12/comparatif-drivers-nvidia-t75.htm
It's in french, but as there's a lot of score numbers, it could be easy to understand -
could be differences even in the thermal pads. im sure if i had GTA IV, my temp would be a higher than 89C since it uses more power combined (cpu + gpu) compared to furmark (mostly gpu).
edit: nice comparison of drivers. out of curiosity of the 3dmark scores, is the cpu at stock + 1280x1024 res? -
cpu @ 2.85, 1280*1024 (every test in the last table is done on the same machine, same install, same conditions.)

Hello Thalanix!
Would it be possible to create a 730/18 20/1020 modded bios ? 20MHz more at shaders compared to the first 730 of the list. Thx.
Im now in 730 1800 1020, and i have 84° max at FurMark after 10 minutes, with the notebook cooler zalman nc2000 (full) and a room at 22°. I can go higher. 730/18 20/1020 would be perfect. -
i havent confirmed it, but im pretty sure the scaling will only let it be 1800 or 1850.
