Why don't you guys up the voltage to 1.11? then you can get GTS speeds...
-
-
If I up the voltage it starts to have problems and die. Even @ 585 core @ 1.11v it dies, so I just leave @ 1.05 and go to 570 core which "seems" okay. have not pushed it hard long but that seems to run 90x better than 585 or 600 @ 1.11v regardless of what driver used.
Everyone keeps saying these are GTS cards. This is NOT true... They are VERY similar but they are indeed not the same as the old GTS cards and thus why a few of us have problems... -
That's overclocking for you...mileage not guaranteed. My guess is that the chips which fail GTS speeds are binned as GS chips.

First download the driver you want and extract it or move whatever folder it extracts itself into onto your desktop or some such convenient place.
Then open device manager (through control panel),
open display adapters and right-click on you graphics card to go to properties,
go to the "driver" tab (the last 5 numbers of the "driver version" will be your current drivers)
click "update driver', say that you will install manually and tell it you'll browse to the driver
open the folder that you extracted the driver into and only one file will appear--an inf.
when you select this a whole list of nvidia cards will show up--choose the one closest to your card (for the G50, that's the 9800 GTS) and tell it to install
it will ask if you really want to install an unsigned driver, of course you do... ;-)
You'll probably need to reboot.
You can then check device manager again to make sure the install works.
This works in both XP and Vista--I assume it will work for 7 too, but haven't tried it yet.
Good luck -
Neat. Does it support notebook functions such as Powermizer?

... now im running 182.05 DOX and GTA IV runs better with higher resolution and the max temp now is 85C
with 570-1425-800 ....and 93C with 560 1425 800
3Dmark06 still gives the error message when the temp reaches 85C even with 550-1375-800
I will try to up the voltage later today or this weekend and i hope i can get the GTS speeds without problems
I haven't tried yet to up the voltage and it will be my first timeso i hope everything goes fine
jacobxaviermason
thanx ... I did this way before but i don't remember with what it was
i'll try it later -
are these overclocking secure? i would like to use my laptop longer than just some months
so i wonder how small the lifetime will be after overclocking?
Thanks -
You cant hurt a computer overclocking alone really. Only heat and voltages will change its lifespan in most cases.
Now I say really and in most cases that way because in some cases it can have effect on the parts life, but most of the time that means the part was not up to par anyway. A good made component will last the same overclocked or not so long as voltage and temps are handled correct.
Parts that are not so good which are generally RAM/Memory parts of the chips "could" possibly fail sooner because if they are already not up to par and you add additional stress to them, even if you dont increase voltage or heat, it can lower life span.
But again that generally applies to memory.
I have NEVER EVER seen a CPU or GPU go bad in my life short of END user error, or being DOA from the get go.
If you keep them cool and manage the voltage they last just as long as no mods.
And being most people are not overclocking memory on the GPU its really good to go. -
will check some stuff for programms to overclock when i´m at home.. these are 21 pages here so maybe someone could tell me some secure overclocking results
thanks -
I have never had a PC that I have not overclocked the GPU and CPU and I must say that I have only had a single peice of hardware fail on me: I had a stock antec PSU that came with my new case and I just got my first PCI-E card (7800 GT) and the PCI-E power wouldn't fit and after a very long and frustrating time trying to get it fit I went and got a hammer and hammered it in. I did it lightly, but something went wrong (obviously I was using a hammer) and the card artifacted even on the dektop without anything running. I got a new PSU and took back the card and told them it was like that when I got it. They gave me a new card, haha. Later I found out that antex had messed up and made the PCI-E power rail incorrect on that model of PSU so I didn't feel too stupid after that.
Other than that nothing has dies on me. You just have to apply common sense and don't go balls to the wall with your overclocks. I flashed to the GTS and my temps are exactly the same as they were before and I am not overclocking the RAM which is usually the first to go so in my books I am A-OK.
Oh, by the way I benched 3dmark06 and got 9375. -
-
u guys use rivatuner to check temps?
and what exactly is "flashing" the gfx? :x -
-
okay will check it .. well i get 8141 points @3dmark 06
-
nah i never overclocked before
@edit:
dont see gpu temp on everest.. only HD + CPU :x -
-
the "OSD" ?! what?
well i downloaded Hardware monitor now.. and temps with no overclocking:
idle: 40C
playing: 75C (Mirrors edge for 15 mins.. everything on high + physx)
Will eat smth now and gonna check all the posts for how to flash it. Which improvement could i get from that flashing @3dmark06? Right now i have 8141 (with CPU-overclock module on normal)
thx -
You'll get around 700 extra points if you lash to GTS speeds and increase the voltage to 1.11. We have had varied results so its up to you what you want to try!
And OSD i assume means On Screen Display. -
so i need this file:
rapidshare.com/files/193610043/9800GS_GPU_BIOS.rom.html
for flashing
and 600/1500/800 is pretty save from what i read? -
jacobxaviermason Notebook Consultant
-
only 700points? .. hmm that wouldn´t even be 9k then.. others already reached 10k
and i think that was with a x2 so i even got a stronger CPU (got the A1). But i gess thats not safe anymore?
I only found one modded bios flash.. but i dont know if its the right one? link is in my previous post
thanks -
Its best if you go through the whole process yourself rather than using the download, which FYI doesnt work anyway I dont think.
Remember 3dmark is synthetic... Really performance is reflected by my 6-8FPS increase in GTA and for some reason, 20 FPS in CoD4.
Oh yeah, the link to the thread on BIOS flashing is here somewhere... Cant copy link to you as im on my touch, sorry -
Ok, It's been a couple of years since I was overclocking.
I have been reading this thread over and over. In page 9 I found a link to this flash guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=160237&highlight=bigspin
In the guide I read that I should "software overclock" my GPU first to see what speeds and temps my GPU can handle. It is suggested to use Rivatuner or ATITool to do this job (who is best?).
Can we software overclock our card at all, or do we have to flash the GPU? -
zakazak: The reason it is only 700 points with just overclocking the video card is because it's just the video card and it's not a HUGE improvement, but a decent one. The reason others are getting 9.8K+ is because if you look at their sig they are running their CPU at like 2.8ghz+ with SetFSB -
also thought about overclocking my cpu..
the asus utility gives me 2.9ghz at extreme mode.. so i guess the CPU can handle it?
And how u test your gfx card with rivatuner to see that it can handle it? Just setting the overclocking parameters higher and see which temps it gets? And if they are lower 90C its okay?
thanks -
I didnt bother software overclocking first as I had no time, but I advise you to to be safe! But just so you can make your own decisions, ive had no problems flashing straight away at all.

im actually new to OC a gpu and i tried to go with the GTS speeds and 3dmark06 kinda crashed on an error about the driver failing in the first test this may be caused by what? i am btw doing the oc with ntune to 600/1500/800 which is the speeds of the gts, so i guess the voltage mod needs to be done for the gpu to run at these speeds or is it really the driver giving me a problem..and btw has anyone had these speeds for a long time that can confirm the laptop hasnt had a temperature issue with it or is this reliable?..
cant wait for replys eager to test how it can perform at those speeds -
Quick summary as I hate facilitating people's laziness:
-need voltmod
-certain drivers are better for oc
-some cards handle the flash well, some dont
-temp doesn't seem to be an issue
Seriously read through the thread and you'll get an in depth look at everything I just went over. -
this thread got 24 pages.. bah thats pretty much and everyone who wants to overclock would have to read it again.. why doesnt anyone summary everything and make a sticky + guide?
Especially because some stuff isn´t explained here.. like what exactly software oc to test if the card can handle is. I guess pulling the parameters @rivatuner to 600-1500-800 and checking the temps at gaeming.. if they are lover than 90C everything is okay and you can flash.. and then u come to the flash lnik which can be downloaded 10 times a day and i try to download it for the last 3 days..
pff
@edit:
not 10 times a day.. totaly 10 times downloadable.. LOL -
You only need to type 3words to get the old bios, if you cba to do that then you probably shouldnt be overclocking!
Ill say it again, software overclock is not necessary to complete the flash. The chances are your card can handle it. When you get your old bios you open it in inhibitor, set the clocks, up the voltage to 1.11, save, then flash from your bootable flash drive.
This all simple stuff!
Have you read the bios flashing thread? Its all in there! -
ye but i´m not sure if i understoof it
i will have to save my current bios, and also make a backup of it.. then i edit it to the higher voltage + speeds. right? .. cause i can´t download the modded thingy from this thread (link doesnt work anymore)
AND one more thing ißm not sure about:
I always have to boot from some flash disk inside my laptop?
thanks -
There has been a lengthy discussion on over clocking the 9800m GS card to the same speed as the 9800m GTS and I decided to compile some information for you guys so you don't have to go through 25+ pages of discussion. The 9800m GS is actually the old 9800m GTS as nVidia changed the schematics of the GTS to a 55nm process with 1GB of RAM and started to sell the old 65nm GTS with 512mb of RAM as the 9800m GS and because of this they were able to let the cards that would have normally not passed the GTS standard test go into laptops with a lower voltage and clock speeds. This means that for some of us the flash will work flawlessly as the card were manufactured to handle it and it will not work for some as they have not had to pass the same standards as they would have it it was going to be a GTS card. With that said the flash has done WONDERS for me and flashing my card has given me about 10-15 percent better frame rates in the games I play and I play a lot of games. With that said here is what I can tell you:
OLD AND NEW BIOS FOR THE 9800m GS TO 9800m GTS FLASH FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS IT:
Please remember if you think you are not capable of getting your bios and modding it on your own you probably shouldn't be downloading this and attempting a flash. I am providing this for archive purposes if anyone loses or corrupts a bios and needs it fresh. I retrieved this BIOS from my card and edited myself so it is 100 percent tested and working on my laptop.
http://files.filefront.com/13383060
I am providing an OVERVIEW of what I did - for the DEFINITIVE guide on how to flash your nVida bios which goes into MUCH greater detail on the subject of flashing the bios go here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=160237
Here is what I did and a few tips for the G50Vt-A1 Laptop and it worked for me, please read the above guide to thoroughly know how to flash your bios:
-make a bootable USB key (there are a bunch of programs to do this with I used one from HP) and put nvflash and both rom files on the root folder of the USB key
-you can retrieve your original bios from your card with nvflash and edit it with nibitor if you want or use the ones I provided
-make sure you have 182.05 DOX edition drivers CLEAN installed as they give the best OC stability and game performance reported
-to clean install a driver you uninstall the driver, reboot in safe mode and use driver sweeper, reboot again install the driver then reboot again
-boot up from the USB key and flash the new bios onto your 9800m gs
-run 3dmark maxed out a couple times through to test stability
-my card gets to 93C on maxed out 3dmark05 and 91C maxed out on 3dmark06, but never exceeds 88C in a game; before the flashed I got the SAME temps so nothing to worry about (you can monitor your temps with GPUZ)
-if everything runs smoothly with no artifacts / crashing you are fine and happy gaming, if not reboot and flash the old bios rom back onto your card
-you CANNOT test this OC with software programs as the VOLTAGE is changed on the card to support the over clock
-remember this VOIDS your warranty if you cannot get the old bios back on before you send your laptop in for repairs in case anything goes wrong
-this flash has worked flawlessly for some of us and has not worked for others, but no one has killed their computer doing it so it should be a relatively safe processes
-from what I have read people with the G50Vt-A1/2 laptops have better results than with the other model numbers as I think the quality of the parts are not as good in the G50Vt-X series

If this helps you please give me some rep! -
I have started a new thread for this with the above post as the first so it is easier for people ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=357807) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about their overclocking the CPU on the G50Vt-A1 with the T9400.
-
thanks ALOT .. this is exactly what i hoped for !
rly great work.. this should get a own thread + sticky imo
just one more quesion:
So i always have to boot with that usb stick? or just at the first time i flash it?
Thanks once more
@edit: also need some infos for OC the cpu -
I have updated the post a lot so please go to my new thread and read and comment on it there and I will answer questions in that thread.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=357807
You boot into DOS with the USB stick to flash, after that your bios is modded and there is no need to boot into DOS anymore. Read the guide I linked to you need to be 100 percent on whats going on so you don't get stuck and pissed off right in the middle of things
You are lucky I hurt my back and I am laid up for a few days... -
lucky me.. bad you
and thanks again.. got it now.. rly great .. hoepfully i can do all this stuff today -
used your .rom file and flashed it.. now getting erorr @3dmark06:
IDirect3DDevice9resent failed: Device_Lost(D3DERR_DEVICELOST)
this error comes when the clock is too high.. but i got the same gfx card as u guys? also used this DOX driver Exostenza said in his tutorial. -
Answered in my thread
-
I got that error at first, then I changed the voltage and it went away.
-
to which value you changed the voltage?
i got it at 1.11 -
Just something I figured I would share for those of you who dont know.
IF using any other speeds other than STOCK or GTS speeds the speeds you select are not going to be what it "actually" runs.
What I mean for example if you pick 565 for the core, it will run 567... if you pick 570 it will run 571.
Regardless of what GPU-Z or ATI tools say your card does NOT run exactly what you put unless you pick the right number.
I learned this a while back on desktop overclocking.
The only program thus far I have found that tells you the actual speed its running is EVGA Precision.
All the overclocking features of it are useless but it tells you the actual speeds on the left side...
Anyway, wanted to share that. You will have to do some more research if you want to understand why as I don’t want to make a book here but just an FYI. So those trying to do minor bumps or drops to they may actually be more than minor… -
Yeah set it to 1.11V. I don't recommend going any higher unless you really know what your doing!
Thanks for that useful info Bryanu, I never knew that -
can you oc with 179.48? or only with dox's drivers?
-
I think you can with 179.48, but the latest DOX drivers has all the bug fixes, game optimizations and custom tweaks so I have no clue why anyone would want to use a dated driver.
-
its the most stable for me in cod4...doxs runs too hot...i max at 86 with 179.48, dox i hit 89-90's sometimes... i know its not that much hotter but i really dont get that much of a performance boost to justify the couple of degress hotter
-
Also though the 182.xx drivers have a 10-20 percent performance increase in a bunch of newer games with aa enabled. makes a huge diff for me. that coupled with the min frame rate boost dox drivers provide its not a choice for me to use the dox drivers. its a must.
-
i got a question i have the g50vt-x5 from bestbuy the 2.13ghz p7450 i oced it using setfsb to 2.55ghz and its getting max temp 70c avg around 57-64c i already oced my gpu to gts speeds and i know its fine it never reaches over 90c just only reached around 83c max temp at one point. are these temps good. im mainly worried about the cpu temp.
