Has anyone tried the Mcafee removal tool (to completely rule it out)?
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS100507
Maybe the uninstaller isn't good enough. Just a thought.
Edit: err wait, has anyone done a CLEAN (aka retail) install of Win7 and gotten the BSoD? Mcafee is linked to the same stop code in some error reports found via teh goog. -
Hey folks,
Sorry if this is not the most appropriate place to post this. But I was wondering what were GPU and CPU temps obtained on the G51J during high loads? I've seen a handful of temps in this post that said that the GPU was between 85-90 degrees.
If that is the case, would the G51J be a stable laptop? Are those temps common and/or normal? I'm tired of having overheating issues with laptops. My current laptop is frustrating because it overheats. It was fine initially but now after a few years it shuts down when i try to play even simple games.
Thanks -
-
Yea, I took it apart and cleaned everything. I replaced the thermal compound on my GPU as well, using AS5, but it actually got worse. I thought it was possibly because of insufficient contact between the GPU and the copper contact because it seemed like the stock compound was some thermal pad or some clay like stock thermal compound that was a little thick. So I got a thermal pad that was quite thick but has bad thermal conductivity. Regardless, it runs now but its not as good as before. I used to be able to play TF2.
However, i have to admit when I reopened my laptop it seemed like maybe I had too much AS5?. But it would not have made my comp suck that bad would it? Its old but not being able to run Warcraft:Frozen throne is not very pleasing.
Really? max 86 is fine? It feels like a lot maybe because I've been having issues. Is that durable though, when the comp ages with those temps ? Isn't the max temp for 260M 92 or 96 degrees, its awfully close. I so want to buy the G51J but i can't decide.. Sorry about the long post -
does the G51J-A1 Come with any anti virus pre installed?

Oh it's norton still? I thought mine came with mcafee... nvm then. Whatever it was I nuked it on first boot.
-
Norton wasn't an option on mine.. can't remember what trial thing wanted to activate (only had the stock os installed for a few hours before I wiped the drives), but I know it wasn't Norton. It doesn't really matter anyway as it has nothing to do with this thread. Even clean RTM installs of Win7 are reported here to have the same crashes as stock ones.

do any of you guys know a good MMorpg with Very Nice graphics?
Soul of ultimat nations look nice and also silk road online.

no shut offs at the moment.

(Still troubleshooting random gaming shutdowns, and thinking it may be related to nvidia multi monitor stuff and having the laptop open vs. closed....still testing) -

I do love my G51J, but as I've said I'm almost never in windows, so that's why I knew I'd be safe (or had a good hunch) when I bought it. If you're looking at it for a gaming machine it'd be hard for me to justify it, because you might end up chained to this thread like so many others.
Just my two cents. Please don't flame me. -

game performance in XP is better anyway
-
Kinda lame how this problem still isn't resolved by Asus after a month and a half...
-
just don't look for dx10 effects.
Now we look down to xp as we did to win 3.1, outdated in every way.
-
why not just install xp on it.
you wont be getting bsod. -
so far, only myself and one other user confirmed no BSODs on XP. others asked about drivers, haven't heard back. its possible (however unlikely) that some people may also have issues on xp. -
Hey guys,
I just created an account so I could join these uber forums since I've been reading them for awhile, as well as my original forum home. Glad to finally have an account and possibly make some sort of contribution eventually.
That being said, I just ordered the Asus G51J-A1 from NCIX.com and it's currently en route to my place. Now, I had read every single BSOD thread about this lappy that I could find and I still made the educated decision to buy this thing. The specs have my really excited to see what it can due with my huge library of old and new games.
I am, however, still incredibly concerned with the errors. I have read the topics on this forum about slipstreaming XP and I was just hoping to clarify one more time that the G51VX drivers are 100% compatible given both models have essentially the same hardware (minus the Sata and Lan drivers found here @ post #8). -
can you guys help? -
I still can't decide whether I should buy G51J-A1 or G51VX-A1 later in mid-January.
Spec-wise, the difference from G51J-A1-A1 are only the processor and the pre-configured OS they come with, right?
So far after I re-read this thread over and the G51J-A1 owner lounge, I saw people have 0 problem with their G51J-A1 once they moved from 7 to XP (or Ubuntu, even). Could it be partially because of the OS issue as well? -

Hello everyone,
I own a G51j-A1 as well and I'm getting the same issues.
I've been reading over the internet about this issue and tried several things.
I tried the 205 BIOS and it didn't do anything. Also, updating NVIDIA drivers didn't help.
I've read somewhere that removing Razer drivers can help, so I did that.
Also, I turned off the Antisantropic (is that how you spell that) and also the Occlusion ? (I don't have my laptop with me right now, I'll edit later) because apparently the game doesn't support it.
I was able to play Borderlands for a good 2h straight without BSOD.
Now, I suspect that the problem is still not resolved, I'll give it a shot this weekend.
However, I found something really interesting on another forum today.
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/BSOD-Windows-7-BCCode-124-t260603.html
With the help of the "program" they tell the user to use, he seems to be getting a hal.dll issue. I guess that will help us all figure out what is the deal with all those BSOD.
Can someone try this out? -
any words for asus yet?
-
if you've slipstreamed XP before, you can go the commando way and just add sata/lan(/wireless). it will install, have (surprisingly only a few) missing devices, among which will be the audio (realtek), bluetooth (widcomm), acpi (atk), and one or two others i may have forgot.
for asus software, install what you want. i've been living with none on my machine.
actually, has there been someone who HASN'T had a BSOD on borderlands? (43 pages is a lot to go back through) -
-
everyone can just edit his own post no need to make it long. -
-
Just got my first BSOD. Playing Civilization IV for about 2 hours. Same issue as everyone else.
-
if there's anyone who's played more than a combined 40+ hours or so of Borderlands and HAS NOT got a BSOD, it would be nice to know. as of now, it's looking more and more like a faulty batch of G51Js from the factory. -
I think Fuyuki finished borderlands already (he mentioned it in a previous post of this thread)
-
it takes less than 40 to beat the game (first and second playthough)
if you need something to do, you can repeatedly quit/spawn in New Haven while opening the chest on top of the roof. -
-
When i first played Borderlands, I got a BSOD after about 5 minutes of playing. I googled it to see if anyone else (not with a g51j) got a BSOD and one tip was to turn off anisotropic filtering and ambient occlusions.
Haven't gotten a BSOD afterwards yet. -
-
AA is not anisotropic filtering, AA= anti aliasing. they are different settings.
