Just had an interesting experience...
I'm setting up this Furmark run, and as it's running initially, it started to glitch, and had a driver reset during the initial run. So I asked myself, "What was different from last night that ran multiple times beautifully?" And then it hit me. I used my lappy at work, and the battery was down to 13% So it's trying to recharge the battery and run the Furmark off the 150w brick. So I rebooted, and hooked up my new 180w brick. Turned off PowerPlay, and it was still glitchy, and even GSOD, but it recovered. During which, I inadvertantly hit the power button, which sent it to Sleep Mode. When it resumed, the Furmark was still running, at the 5min mark, and has been ROCK STABLE SINCE. What the hell? When it resumed, the battery was at 16%.
And for Hellcry, 15 minutes in, and at 84C max (away from the AC)![]()
So all this got me thinking about possibly the power regulator on the motherboard, or maybe recharging the battery is causing power dips to the GPU under load? Freakin curious...

Mines at RMA headquarters canada right now, being fixed should hopefully get it back sometime next week or even early 2 weeks from now. optimizm is at an all time low thanks hellcry
. hopefully when i get it back i can mess around with it enough to work without problem.
-
I tried everything posted so far, but even with the new hotfix driver I get the GSOD. It happened 5 minutes into CODMW2.

Latest Furmark for Hellcry:
Furmark 1.82 @ 1920x1080 PostFX Xtreme Burn 2 hr run 700/1000 clocks on Catalyst 10.7a 08/06/10 -

Chastity i see youre running more stable but in the previous post you still say you got GSODs in office...
Its nice you can show me a 2 hour run but id like to get a permanent solution not just make it 2 hours into furmark sometimes and getting a GSOD another time. Still a great thing you can do becouse such runs are an exception on my lappy. I tried running it without the battery to make sure and i still got a GSOD so i dont think battery charging would be the cause... I very rarely use it unplugged so it pretty much always 100% charged in mine...
I also tried running it with all unnecessary hardware disabled as you and still got GSODs. I cant seam to replicate your success right now, not even for one run, so im pretty worse off than you here. -
-
I think the reason it glitched was because the battery levels were so low, the power management may have been doing something quirky, or lowering power levels to the GPU. Like I mentioned, it went into sleep mode, I kicked it back on, and it's been stable since. So I think it was more of a situational fluke than anything else.

Can you change the setting?HTML: -
@Chastity
Where can I get a 180w ac adapter for the G73.
Do you really think it's necessary? -
And you havent had any after that?
Id really like to replicate your machines success but i simply cant... -

*off topic* Quick question HellCry: You are a OC user of the G73 ?
-
If youre asking if i tried to OC for stability i did and it didnt solve the problem, only gave a slight improvement.
If you are asking if i tested my OC limits i havent done that yet, but i did OC the GPU to 820/1200 and the cpu to 2,3ghz on 4 cores so far for fun, didnt want to try more yet. -

Yes, youre correct on that one, since youll always find something that wont work with what came out of the box one day and youll have to update. And i do like to toy around with my laptops...

Why did you want to know that? What relevance could it possibly have?

calm down dude,it was just a question and as far as I know off topic means off topic.
-
On further ponderings, not only was the battery low, I booted with the AC brick installed, so maybe that caused some incompatible power mode/profile to activate on boot, which got reset on the sleep/awake cycle. Maybe some form of power throttling?
-
Well whatever the case i cant find a good gpu to replace mine or achieve what you have on yours, so my only options are to wait for this update from Asus and see if they managed to solve anything or to sell the laptop if that wont be the case.
Gotta go sleep now. Too tired to think. -
FYI: If anyone is interested, I setup an IRC chatroom on irc.freenode.net / port 6667 #asus-rog Please try and use your NBR names so we all can know who is who. It's hard to troubleshoot at this pace.

I have to agree. 10.7a drivers are better than original 10.7. Also it is very important to have a clean install as when i got the laptop for first time i just updated it to 10.7 but still had crashes. With a clean install it is much better now.
Also my speakers used to crackle loudly all of a sudden and it was irritating and only led me to do a hard shutdown. But uninstalling Creative software worked for me and hasnt happened(yet) in 3 days. Also it could be the new Realtek 2.51 drivers released a few days ago. -
I would hazard the driver update probably helped
-
Ugh, that sucks bro.... Like major sucks I need this lappy back by school, better be 10-14 days like they said... Im sure all the fools at the station are going to do is put new thermal paste and pads on anyways...
When I get it back im going to do a clean win 7 install, except I heard you loos turbo boost function doing this, can anyone confirm or denie this?
Then im gonna do a clean install of 10.7a , just out of curriosity , you need to use a registry cleaner to do this right? -
Intel Turbo Boost Drivers and Gadget Application is on your Driver CD.
Asus Twin Turbo requires the ATK Package and Power4Gear to be installed. -
-
I have found Twin Turbo isn't all that swift, so don't bother with the "junk".
-
When you guys have the power adapter plugged does the second light up front aways stay on? I would think it would only stay on when the battery is charging.
Thanks -
.

-
Thats weird I dont think I have ever seen mine go green. Mine looks yellow right now and always is yellow when it is plugged in or plugged in and charging.
-
Asus Twin Turbo boosts the base clock of the processor from 133MHz to ~141MHz. For certain applications this can add a bit of performance and for others it can degrade performance, since the base clock is part of the processor, the processor can still tune up or down. -

-
Mines blue......
-
grey here.lol....i thought all were green(when done charging) and orange when charging.....as @ almost all the g73s i've seen so far ...6 in all...
-
thats kinda funny we all get different lights, that said mine sounded like it was short circuiting, it made sizzling noises.

With the hotfix driver I started to get black screens and freezing.
One thing I noticed though, there is a warning sign that GSOD/BSOD(black) is on the way. While playing CODMW2, the screen glitches. It's hard to explain, but it would be like having vsync on, but there is no sync. Even though I have vsync set to off both in game and set to app detect in CCC. the screen top and bottom don't line up for just a second. It happens once or twice, but I know in less than a minute, a GSOD is coming. It never fails. -
I have to take it back what i said yesterday about 10.7a. Today I started to get GSOD/BSOD again that too playing SC2. I keep Hwinfo on and the temperature never goes above 85-90. Still the system crashes and hangs. Same with JC2, the temp never goes max but the game still crashes sometimes. Even though 10.7 is better than 10.6(it had more crashes).
It could be 4xAA or 8xAF i am using but yesterday it was not a problem while playing the same game. It is as if something triggers and the system crashes cause of it. In this particular SC2 mission my comp crashed 3 times in a row at the exact same spot. Weirdly I reduced the settings from Ultra to High and removed forced AA and AF from CCC and it didn't crash and I finished the mission.
Also I have never been able to run successfully Furmark with PostFX and Extreme Burning mode on. It crashes soon. Without those options the test runs fine and I only get a few artifacts once the temp reaches 98-100.
So i still can't figure it out what is causing these issues. I think its more cause of ATI drivers and not hardware. -
-
Well, so far the 10.7a drivers are working well for me. Ran Furmark for 24 hrs with no crashing and no gaming issues at all. This is in contrast to the 10.7 driver crashing within a minute in Furmark.
-
-
-
Made any screenshots of that 24 hours furmark run? Id like to see the temperatures on that
.
10.7a are no better than 10.7 for me though sadly... -
I did a 6hr run once, and the temps never went any higher than what it gets to after 20 minutes: 85C. So I would hazard a guess that 24hrs wouldn't make any difference.
-
If youre in a small room it would heat the ambient temperature and it would climb higher
.
-
You forget I have an air conditioner
-
I'm not sure if this is out of topic. But for those of you who do clean installs, do you use a windows disc or the recovery disc? And for the recovery disc, after i have burned it out, is there anything i can delete to free up space? I mean the files are already on the disc right?
