Mine never climbed after 20 minutes either. Once you reach a point where it's dropping a degree and then adding it back it's plateaued. Unless something changes in the room, there's no reason it would ever change after that.
I'm pretty happy with this laptop now. I am just waiting for a missed keystroke fix and I'm a happy camper.![]()
-
Mine plateaued at about 90C. I'd say the average was 85C. I used the normal settings for Furmark.
-
I just ran another one from my office at work because they can afford to run their air conditioning a lot cooler than I run mine. After 25 minutes, it was bumping along at 85C in furmark 1920X1080 post fx and extreme burning. I didn't have it propped up or anything. So it's 3 to 4 degrees cooler. The ambient is about 21 or 22C here where it was more like 28C at home.

What happened here. It made me type in Chinese!!! -
However, IIRC the fix is to remove all languages except your native language from the game. I don't know how you actually do that, but that is the fix.

So I was bored and went back to stock bios and loaded 10.7a and its would GSOD FFXIV as soon as it started ;( lol well back to 10.1 and running stock bios atm, waiting for official release sigh, think my GPU is getting worse and worse or just my GPU is very sensitive not sure.

@ Chinese problem
Aren`t you guys pressing "Shift+Alt"?
Its a Windows shortcut for changing the keyboard language.
I work with Photoshop and it happens when I have to use both keys at the same time.
You can press the combination again until you change back to your language. -
Hey there. I`m officially joining the discussion.
Facts about my recently arrived g73:
1 - Stock drivers didn`t allow me to see youtube videos with graphics acceleration... Terrific?
2 - I had that smart idea: Why not to upgrade my CCC driver? 10.6 was the lastest and I got it.
3 - I realized I`m as lucky as Chastity. GSOD followed by boot lockup sometimes.
4 - After 2 weeks avoiding a massive use of my video card (since this is my work computer), I`m here to test and share information with my g73 fellows.
What I tried and results I got:
1 - Just installing CCC 10.6 gives me GSOD, BSOD, Freezes and lockups.
2 - I flashed my BIOS to 209 and it seems to help. I used winflash.
3 - I`m currently using Asus website stock 10.1 CCC. Its lottery. Sometimes I can force my video card the hole day and nothing happens. Other times it can`t handle my old Neverwinter Nights for 10 minutes and gives me a BSOD or GSOD. BUT, its already MUCH better then the stock or 10.6 version of CCC.
What comes next:
I`m downloading mobility CCC 10.1, CCC 10.5 and CCC 10.7a hotfix.
I`m also studying the whole topics (Repaste, OC etc). My goal is to get the most updated stable settings.
Thanks Chastity for your articles and lets see if I get some luck to help you and our g73 fellows too.

Be glad to hear how your progress goes. More info = better idea of what is working for the most people. Good hunting!

Here we go:
Tests and results with BIOS 209 and Catalyst 10.7a against GSOD.
My goal was to update from 10.1 to 10.7a and get rid of the GSOD problems and run a nice benchmark. I choosed FFXIV Benchmark.
- I started unistalling the Power4Gear Hybrid and rebooted.
- I tryed to make a full uninstall of the ATI CCC, but that gave me an unexpected GSOD (BSOD actually) when I was finishing the uninstall! It just froze my pc and I had to reboot, press f8 and choose "Low resolution video" to see my windows again! The CHKDSK took ages to finish!
- Somehow after another reboot seems like my g73 was using the last valid configuration and I decided to just install the whole 10.7c fix overwritting the old 10.1 patch. I had a video shake and the video card stopped responding for a few secs during the install... That freaked me out seriously! Haha. Installation done, rebooted.
- Installed Power4Gear Hybrid 1.1.38 and rebooted.
- I noticed my turbo wasn`t working anymore, so I installed the lastest Intel Turbo Boost 1.0.4 and its gadget seems to work when it wants to. But I still can change the p4gh profiles.
Results running BIOS 209, CCC 10.7a and P4GH 1.1.38:
GSOD on Neverwinter Nights (lots of poligons and special effects used) 72C max temp.
I switched back to 10.1 and the GSOD appeared again, sadly.
Results running BIOS 209, CCC 10.7a, P4GH 1.1.38 and OverClock 705/1100:
Runned FFXIV benchmark on low resolution with 94C max temp 3444 score.
Runned FFXIV benchmark on FullHD with 95C max temp 2000+ score (can`t remember)
Played NWN with LOTS of enemies, spelks, particles and everything else perfectly.
NO GSOD but no turbomode yet.
I feel like I need to test more, but since the changes I made were quite safe, I'm glad with the results and looks like a good way to go!
Looks like our g73 were made together Chastity. At this moment I'm also a proud member of the 705/1100 OC group.
Here goes a bonus screenshot of my first FFXIV benchmark and temperature:

What P4G settings are you using? I've found good success using the Windows-default "High Performance" mode while ignoring all of the P4G profiles.
I'm looking to install CCC 10.7a on my BIOS 209 system without P4GH. -
My P4G gadjet was working when I took the screenshot but somehow it isn't anymore. Dunno why.
I don't have time to check out what could make my turbo mode and my p4g work properly again. The rest seems perfect. -
I just updated to the officially released 211 BIOS and CCC 10.7a and hit a GSOD on bad company 2. Oddly, with the upgrade CCC will not allow me to overclock. I think that if I could overclock, I'd avoid the GSOD
-
Just wonder, why don't you all RMA the unit with the GSOD?
I haven't read the whole thread, but from what I can gather are two types of GPU Memory being used and the newer models (like mine) already have a nice "repaste" work from factory. Mine, with stock bios 209, reaches some 58C in idle.
I think the easiest way is to RMA the device, so that they can do the repasting or even replacing the whole GPU board and not you. I mean you paid a lot of money for it!
Besides that, a lot of RMA is the best way to get ASUS to know the problem and develop (hopefully) a software fix (if it's really possible). They are only paying money for RMA, to repai the broken devices, something they don't like. Whining or searching for a solution in a Forum won't hurt them much...
I also know that you won't have the laptop for some days which really sucks, but I think it's really something Asus should fix by themself.
pato -
There is only one flaw in your plan, pato: There is no guarantee that the replacement GPU will be one without any problems. Besides, I already repasted.
Besides, Asus is aware that it's a timing issue with the vram and the reference ATI drivers. Expect a vbios and a driver update. I don't know if they need to add any code to 10.8, but if they do, it'll probably be a hotfix. -
I have tried literally every combination posted on this thread and nothing works. How hard is it to flash to the MSI bios that make it so no GSODs occur. Also, if i flash to the MSI, can i flash back to 209 to get the HDMI and VGA functionality back? COuld someone link me to te MSI bios
-
OK, there seems to be quite a bit of confusion about BIOSs.
1) There are TWO (2) BIOS in the G73JH. One is the MOTHERBOARD BIOS, currently up to version 211, and the VIDEO BIOS (vBIOS) of which there is only ONE version, and has a long version number, like 012.017.0000.xxxx etc.
2) The MSI and Clevo BIOSs mentioned in threads here refer to a VIDEO BIOS
So, knowing this, flashing to 209, 211, 206, or whatever affects only the MOTHERBOARD. This has no affect on GSODs, HDMI, or VGA functionality. These items are controlled by the VIDEO BIOS.
Clear? OK Terrific. -
Bios (mother board bios)
This is the one with numbers such as 206,209,211. The latest is 211 at the moment. This basically controls your laptop features. Everything from the keyboard to your cpu its all because of this. This is flashed from within the bios itself. Don't bother about using winflash, u'll only end up cursing and swearing.
Vbios (Video bios)
This is the bios for your graphic card. Meaning like you mentioned the msi bios. That msi bios is a video bios for the 5870. Hdmi and vga doesn't work for one simple reason, it was made for a MSI laptop. Where else what we have as u know is an ASUS laptop. Asus has yet to release a vbios that fixes the problem. This is flashed in DOS, once again don't bother about winflash, you will also end up cursing and swearing.
So basically what you want is a vbios not a bios. So, as u can see you got things completely mixed up and at this rate i would suggest u forget about flashing anything for the time being. Take your time to understand what is what first. Its better to take a week or two. Maybe even a month to understand rather then to screw up and then RMA. I hope this helps my friend. -
What I do not understand is why can I play for 3 hours on BC2 for one night and then the next as soon as I start...GSOD.
-
That is why it's called a "marginal error"
-
So just to update everyone on the status of my rma, I phoned today only to find out its bee 5 days since theyve recieved my laptop, I sent it on august 6 didnt get there till the 11, I phoned them today to find out they are waiting on a part for the laptop, the guy on the phone wouldnt tell me what part, im hoping its a new gpu and i still have 9 miserable days to sit and wait.
-
I registered to post here. thank you, thank you, thank you for all the work you have done and compiled here Chastity.
I'm working off of a fresh WIN7 install, 211 BIOS via dashboard, modified VBIOS vis bootable USB drive, 10.7a catalyst drivers and overclocked per your settings and it works great.
Thank you again. -

UPDATE: We may have a workaround for the GSOD Issue, but I need more testing by you folks to confirm:
Someone mentioned a workaround they use which involves doing a power rotation of unplug / replug in the AC power before launching a game.
(I wish this person says Hi, so I can give him some kudos)
I've done quite a few tests using this method, and so far NOTHING has GSOD on me yet. With stock speed settings (700/1000) Powerplay on and off, on 10.7a, all the usual culprits for GSODs are being rock solid.
What I'd like is some feedback from all those with GSOD issues to try this, and please respond with :
1) Drivers used
2) Power plan used
3) Powerplay settings
4) Overdrive, if used.
And do please use stock speed settings of 700/1000.
EDIT: finally got MTG to GSOD twice. Meh. -
Perhaps this might come in handy for your opening post. I've not used it yet but its suppose to save our activation then after doing a clean install just run it to restore our activation. That way we don't have to call to activate. Might save us some trouble

Boot up plugged in, before game, unplug then plug back in.
Found it didn't stop GSODs. -
-
Try it out yourself and give feedback.

Im the one that suggested the power rotation.
It helped for me. But I didnt game verry much since I discovered it.
Normally I would gsod in furmark in +-5min or less. Ive been running more than 10 minute now with the power rotation.
Coincidence?
And there is this strange thing that gpu-z will be able to monitor the gpu load % after this. (its not able before this switch) -
Myabe is because when you pulled the power the vga clocks changed and that prevents it from GSODing so soon.
ex. 700/1000 -pull power- 300/500 -power back- 700/1000
It has been known that changing the clocks can help stabilize the timings. -
maybe. this is why we must experiment.
-
-
Mmm, I'll try it out when I get home!
-
Maybe manufacturer date will give some clear trend on what systems have the problem. I should have mine next week...what stress tests are the best to use.
Thanks -
3dmark (gpu benchmark) - this is like the "industry standard" when comparing gpu
FFXIV (gpu benchmark) - pretty new some reports it to cause gsod quickly
Furmark (gpu stress test) - really heats up your gpu
Prime95 (cpu stress test) - i use it only when overclocking my desktop
intelburntest (cpu stress test) - same as prime95
hdtune (hdd benchmark) - test out how my drives perform
There are more but these are the ones that i normally use. -
hello all i'm new to the forums and looking for some advice. I've been using the 9.12 drivers up till this point from Asus. I just got City of Heroes, Going Rouge and the graphics look pretty terrible, essentiall the outer edges of the caracters are heavily block like pixels. So to rectify this I try updating the drivers. Even though they've given me heartache in the past Its been a few months since i tried using stock catalyst drivers from ATI so I tried that first bringing me to 10.7. This cleared up the pixelation but of course I started getting GSODs. So I pulled the driver usng the standard uninstall program, ran driver cleaner in safe mode, and downloaded 8.683.0.0 from asus' website. I think this is 10.1 but CC is still telling me 10.7 (upon further reading on other forums theres a standing bug in CC that shows the latest version ever installed even if your no longer running that version). Device Manager says 8.683.0.0 so I'm fairly confident that I am rnning the drivers from Asus and my green screens have cleared up, but i'm back to square one with the pixelation issue. To make a long story short, are there any tricks out there to make 10.7 ATI stock happy with the G73JH? I even tried the 10.7a and that gave green screens as well.
-
Can someone who is seriously prone to GSOD test out this set of drivers? I found it on guru3d, its based on 10.7a and it installs just fine on our G73. I have it installed but i'm at work so i can't test it out. Previously at 700/1000 i would gsod instantly on furmark but i don't on this. So its worth giving it a try. Personally i don't like furmark so hope someone can give this set of drivers a test run.

Just tested it. Black screen of death in seconds on FurMark.

I just ran FurMark with 211 bios and 10.7a Catalyst. It black screened after 5 minutes and was at about 105C. I've already setup an RMA. I'm in the process of backing everything up and going to send it in probably Sunday. Best Buy said they will send it in for me. I have a bunch of dead pixels on my screen and I notice a new one every time I look for them. This was the original reason I started an RMA.
-
Just to give everyone a quick update on my rma, I phoned today to see were my laptop was, it was shipped back yesterday so i should be getting it either tomorrow or thursday is what the lady said. I asked what they fixed. she said they replaced my power supply and my video card was replaced
.
Just to be clear on the problems I had, the power supply made sizzling noises and got extremely hot, and I was also getting black screen o death after about 1 and 1/2 hours to 2 of video gaming, Ill test out and see if its been fixed or not. -
Alright, so I got my laptop back yesterday, bright and early in the morning. I checked the bill for what they fixed and the list started off with my power supply, they replaced it and gave me a different one so no more problems there. Then they repasted the GPU originally, after the repaste they have showing a fan error on the board, so the next step they took was pull out the card and replacing it all together, and possibly a new fan from what it sounds like. So in the end Ive got a new power supply and a new GPU.
The first round of tests I tried so far have been bsod free. The GPU is at a stable temperature an I ran ff14 bench a few times then went straight to playing Crysis Warhead. And so far no issues, except when I was being shot at by a tank ingame, when the projectile landed my screen would go blank for a sec and then come back. So im assuming thats a game bug or I have to reinstall the game.
Oh and they did not erase my hard drive like originally anticipated, everything was the same and my current driver is 10.7 for the gpu, everything else is still stock . And best part no Bsods or Gsods yet.
