I was wondering where I would be able to download the 10.5 drivers for backup purposes? I've only been able to find desktop versions of the drivers so far and not the mobility 10.5 for our G73JH.

    Thanks people.

Did you change your clock speeds at all?? And are you on 10.7 or 10.7a? Also, did you do a clean install or just overwrite?

    Update-

GSOD - I am working on an alternative theory about why some notebooks will GSOD and others will not with the same drivers, BIOS, and vBIOS loaded. This machine was recently returned directly to me due to GSOD and overheating issues. Sure enough in Furmark (yes I used it... :D ) it would GSOD after 20 minutes or so and in gaming it took me about an hour to get StarCraft II to fail.

So after fooling around with power management settings and updating to the 10.8 drivers (no BIOS or vBIOS update) the machine is operating well now and yes the temps appear a little high but well within the spec. I manually shut the machine down right before the 8-hour mark so we could test StarCraft II now. Anyway, this might mean something, it might not yet but I wanted to post up for those who think I have disappeared this week. I sort of have but for a reason. ;)

I think the new vbios fixed my GSOD issues. I was wary of the idea of installing any bios labeled as beta but after trying to install the open beta client for FFXIV and having a GSOD from simply the beta installer (which does use a hardware accelerated installer apparently) I decided to take a risk. Uninstalled the 10.1 stock drivers, ran the driver cleaner from safe mode, and installed the 10.8 drivers from AMDs website. Just to make sure that 10.8 was not working I started up WoW, within about 2 minutes of letting the login screen go with the flying dragon I got the GSOD lockup. Ran the vbios (which I was surprised to see had the same version numbers so it made me wonder if anything was really updated) and now i've been running the login screen for about 5 minutes and no crashes. I'll post again after an extended test if I get any more issues.

edit: Followup to this post. I did not mention his but I'm running the 211 BIOS and like i sai the beta vbios posted at the beginning of this thread. PLayed City of Heroes for a good hour at ultra settings.. with the exception of the occasional screen flicker, no issues

I have basically no issues with my current 206 bios and 10.8 without vbios beta. I was playing games, watching videos, playing and watching at same time, browsing for 9 hours straight today. After 9 hours and a couple minutes, I got one gsod. I believe this is that 3% chance of gsod that gary was talking about with bios 206.

With beta vBIOS and catalyst 10.8/10.7a I got GSOD within 2 min in Furmark and about 5 min in SC2. Then I did a full uninstall of Power4Gear then no GSOD. Finally I re-installed the lastest version of P4G and everythings seems fine till now.

So, I'm not quite computer literate enough to carry out some of these changes.

I flashed my BIOS to 211 easily enough. My ATI drivers are at 10.8 (although for some reason Overdrive will not show up in the CCC, and I'm not sure why...). So, I haven't tried any of the clock modifications yet.

I'm not sure how to flash my vBIOS, is there anywhere I can find a more step-by-step guide? I tried changing the BIOS to boot from the USB, but it didn't quite work out, just went to a black screen, with no DOS prompt or anything.

Otherwise, I haven't quite been able to read through the entire thread yet, so if there are some ideas I missed, I'd appreciate it.

I ran Furmark and lasted about a minute with temperatures approaching 90 C.

All that said, the post above by Gary Key gives me a little hope...

I already sent my laptop in once for a GPU replacement at a local ASUS-licensed servicer and it took them a freakin' month to return it. I'm not too eager to send it out for another repair - I'd rather just RMA it.

EDIT: I forgot to add, I messed around with P4G, as well, with no real results. I ran Furmark again just now and temperatures hit 101 C before I finally got a crash (about 3 minutes in).

EDIT 2: I should add, too, that occasionally instead of getting the 'normal' GSOD, I'll get a video crash that results in a blue screen, with the reason being stated as a 'failure to reset graphics driver' or something. Windows generates a dump file/XML file of these events, of course, but I have no idea how to make sense of them, so if anyone feels like taking a look at that, let me know.

Hit the beta VBIOS thread and download my package. I updated it with shorter filenames :) and it's pretty easy to do. update.bat for standard vBIOS, updateod.bat for overdrive vBIOS

Hello everyone, I got my G73 on Monday and I've been reading the thread since yesterday trying to figure out why I can't play any games anymore and I am just surprised at Asus.

I have been getting both GSoD and BSoDs ever since Windows 7 updated using Windows Update. Straight out of the box what I did was:

    Stock BIOS:
    Update Catalyst to 10.8
    Update DirectX (just in case)
    Install AntiVirus/Spyware
    Installed WoW and SC2

After all that, I played WoW for a couple hours with no problems at all then played SC2 for about 3 hours right after and still no problems. As I was shutting down my computer for the night, Windows reminded me that I had a lot of updates for the OS to install so I let it do that before it shutdown.
The next morning, I run my SC2 saved game for less than 10 minutes then GSoD. Because of this, I'm wondering if one of the Windows updates had caused this? I chose to install everything at the time because I wanted to get up to date of course.. so it doesn't help in narrowing it down.

I'm at the point where I can just return the laptop or try Chastity's method. This laptop was working like a charm before the Windows updates, so I really would like to keep this or get a new one that works without all the tweaking. I heard someone mention that they received a "newer" model and had no problems, but I didn't know how to tell the difference between the newer and older ones. I was thinking I could exchange my laptop for a newer model.

I'm just really disappointed that this beastly machine is held back by this.
    Thanks.

played for hours at first then after update, it started screwing up? not sure about that. maybe you just got lucky the first few hours.

try stock drivers and see if it helps. if not, yea, return it and get a replacement.

I'm having issues even getting the computer to boot from the USB. I made the USB drive bootable, but the BIOS won't let me add a boot option for the USB, etc.

Spam the ESC key when powering up the computer.

Lol well aren't you lucky. My machine is all sort's of problem's from GSOD's to Boot Lock ups. BSOD is typically rare, but the GSOD is something that will always remain a problem.

That would be enough for me to commit genocide to be honest. I'm super OCD and minor inperfections for me are sometimes the worst. It's the little things that don't usually attract attention, that once I've seen it, It can't be unseen. My eyes slowly drift away from the focus on the screen to the imperfection.

I had a spec of dust (actually, a few) under the screen on my iPod Touch. Took it to the Apple store and the Genius there gave me a free replacement iPod Touch. If I didn't hate Apple so much for overpricing their laptops, I would probably idolize them for their excellent customer service. But thanks to Gary, I'm actually very pleased with Asus right now and if my laptop survives the RMA, I'll probably make my next computer an Asus.

Hi guys, I'm starting to think I should just RMA it and have them replace my GPU and fan as some have stated has fixed their problems. Do you think I should first bring it to the attention of Best Buy or go through ASUS directly?

I've never RMA'd anything before, how would I begin to do so?

    Thanks again.

Werd I am exactly the same way. Luckily when I was carrying it back from work the larger piece of dust exited the screen, but was replaced by two microscopic pieces of dust that cannot be seen unless you are centimeters away from the screen.

I still have not flashed my vBIOS because I need more convincing that this will definitely fix the problem. Some people say they have returned the machine to ASUS for fixing and card replacement and this has worked, but I still haven't seen anyone say for certain that flashing the vBIOS works.

What is the general consensus. Should I RMA my computer or will flashing the vBIOS work?

If the computer is RMA'd will they put the vBIOS back to 10.1?

No, don't rma if you are just gsoding. The vbios available now is a beta. The official one will be released either today or next week. Click on the vbios link in my sig.

edit - try 10.8 drivers if you haven't already. If that doesn't fix your problem, try the beta (unless the official one comes out today).

Can anyone let me know what is the safest known drivers for the radeon currently released? I had heard that ASUS released an "official" 10.1 release without the GSOD issue, can anyone confirm this works as well as the stock 9.12 driver? Here is the link below:

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

Basically, I don't want to flash any bios just yet until something is official and furthermore, I want to have the latest "Safe" drivers. I tried 10.8 and within seconds had the GSOD (it had been the first time I updated the drivers so a nasty experience indeed)

Please let me know what you guys know!

the safest drivers is the ones that came with your cd or versioin 10.1. HOWEVER, even these have caused people to have gsod issues sometimes. It may or may not work for you.

I highly recommend you update your bios and vbios. Bios version 211 is official and genuine and is on asus's supprot site. The new vbios was released by a representative from asus in the thread located in my signature and it works. Since everyone is reporting that it works, it will probably show up on asus site real soon.

I did the vbios and it was working very nicely on stock (9.12 for me).

I installed 10.8 with the mobility tool (the one that downloads). The install went fine, the benching went fine, powerplay kicks in... pure bliss...

    NOT!

My system has started locking up again when it is idle... and I already applied the MS hotfix that fixes lock ups. It really semas tobe when powerplay kicks in to go from low to high.

It happened first while using web outlook through IE. Second time, the system had been idle for about 15 minutes, I came to use it... locked up.

Sigh.. more testing ahead of me, I guess.

Well after getting two freezes in about 10 minutes I turned off powerplay.

So far so good after 4 hours of use... even with new vBios there is something wrong with the way the GPU "changes gears" I'm sure that's where the lock ups come from.

I would also make sure your other drivers are up to date as well.

Worse case scenario: Uninstall the AMD drivers, safe mode, Driver Sweep, CCLeaner for Reg Cleaning, install desired AMD drivers.

Glad to say that after updating both the bios and vBios, all is working excellent with the very newest radeon drivers! Thanks so much guys!

A few questions though: If I reformat windows, will both the bios and vbios remain the same and I could go straight for 10.8 all over again? I assuming yes.

AND, the only complaint I seem to be having is whenever I plug in an HDMI cable, I have to restart my computer with the cable in to switch on HDMI audio in the playback properties. Before the updates it was always plug and play and the sound would go through to my TV's speakers via HDMI immediately upon plug in. Is there a way to get it to be like this again rather than having to restart my comp for the option to appear in playback??

    Thanks again guys.

Hey Chastity (or anyone else who may help, its all appreciated) I downloaded your the ASUSDVD 3 in 1 from the OP, to get back the blu-ray playing software I lost when asus gave me a new hdd and only installed windows and furmark.

Anyways, when ever I try to launch the setup for the Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 (which is the blu-ray software right?) I get an application error. Is there something I have to do to get it to work?

Hi. I am using asus beta vbios ver :(ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER012.020.000.032.038352) Have they been out any newer than this? They work ok: no GSOD, working hdmi/vga/powerplay, only i get the flickering when it changes frequencies. Not only when changes from 3d/2d but also when it goes into UVD. I also tried yousing same 3d/2d frequencies with different voltage and i don't get flickering. Is it a powerplay problem of the catalyst drivers? Thanks.

Any possible answers with the HDMI plug and play issue requiring a restart to detect the cable?
