Heh. I almost envy my Acer's RMA now. Even though they abused my computer, I still had it back in a few days.
Patience is a virtue for a reason, I suppose.

Called Mason and he said that the screens will be in by the end of the week or beginning of next week, and he said it should be about two more weeks till I get my laptop.

Dude, that really sucks how you're needing to wait this long. Hopefully you won't have to send it right back when you get it.
This is exactly what I'm scared of.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Me too. If it comes back in bad shape I think I'll go ballistic.
-
Sent my RMA in today. Hope it goes well.

Yep. I'll find out soon enough. My g73jh is currently in East Toronto. Should have it tomorrow. I'm kind of scared.
EDIT: And maybe I've been living under a rock, but I've actually never heard of Purolator. Are they any good? -
Purolator - Overnight Shipping - Freight - Courier Delivery Services
Appears to be a Canadian company, so I wouldn't know. :3 -

Well, they'd better take good care of my baby. >:|

Okay, I just got the laptop back....
I'm trying to decide if I'm happy. They gave me a weird keyboard, so this is really weird for me. They didn't touch my hinges or screen.
The whole thing is quite dirty, but nothing permanent, and it's missing one of the pads from the bottom. (Again...)
My temperatures are quite a lot better. 90 degrees after 7 minutes of Furmark in 1080p with PostFX and Extreme burning on.
But this keyboard is pissing me off...How hard is it to replace it yourself? -
Pretty easy actually
-
Wow, that is awful. Contact Gary and see if he can dig into what happened. Sounds like they didn't do what they said they would.
-
can you put a picture of your keyboard just for us to contextualize your problem?
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
How would I go about doing that?
I will when I'm home later. Its still qwerty and whatnot, its just not what I'm used to shape wise. It might be totally normal and I just haven't used one like it. -
What's different?
My slow descent into madness. -
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Okay, I'll post pictures and a video in a minute.
Also, I have two new problems: The laptop had an issue booting. It went black for a minute, but it's okay now.
And some of the keyboard keys don't light up. The area around them does, but the keys themselves dont. -

In the video, at the end where you can't see my hand and it closes; I'm not touching it. It drops on it's own. This is exactly the same problem I had before, but if anything it's worse now.
EDIT: And I PM'd Gary. Will he be able to help if I decide to RMA again? I'm really pissed at Asus right now.
EDIT2: Currently on the phone with Asus. The guy I'm talking to seems genuinely surprised. He's "making note" of this, and I'm currently on hold... -
Wow, that keyboard is weird. Huh.
-
That keyboard only thing I see different is the enter key, looks fine to me. And my lid closes when it's close to closing also... I don't see anything wrong with your notebook.
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Indeed.
My video really doesn't show off the problem. It feels loose and flimsy. When I'm off the phone I'll give a full report.
-
Hello,
I ran through a test on my G73JH and my lid/screen gets to about 1 inch above the keyboard and then shuts - It is hard to tell how far above your keyboard your lid/screen is before it closes on it's own (gravity assisted).
I don't think I have a problem - but I wanted to throw in my test results.
Edit: When I open up my lid/screen I have to hold the keyboard half of the notebook down. If I don't hold down the keyboard while lifting the lid/screen I pickup the entire notebook front. If you're lid opens up easy then you might have an issue to complain about. I did a test on a bunch (5) of Non-ASUS notebooks and they are all closed (gravity assisted) from about 1 inch above the keyboard. They too also require holding down the keyboard when opening the lid/screen. I would say that a stiffer hinge is standard and if your notebook hinges are loose then I would definitely look to a repair process.

Oookay.
I now have ANOTHER RMA set up... The rep I spoke to was genuinely surprised and he spoke to the supervisor. He apologized saying that this shouldn't have happened, and that he'll make sure that this second RMA is "expediated" and that everything I've requested be taken care of. He personally filled out the RMA request form over the phone, writing everything out for me down to little notes and whatnot, and he assured me the notebook would be taken very good care of the second time around.
I really hope he's right.
@Ziddy, I've tested out another new g73jh at my local Best Buy, and it was nothing like mine. I had a thread about my problems and I was advised that this wasn't normal, so...
EDIT: Didn't see your post, Travelor. This is what the Best Buy model did. Mine closes at 3.5 inches. :S -
If you are US and not euro, then thats why the KB looks weird. That is an EUO keyboard (the 1/2, 1/4, etc) keys give it away. Besides that not a huge crippling difference.
-
You sure you want to RMA again over this? If the LCD is working, just a little flimsy....
I would unscrew the bezel and see what's going on myself first. It could be another 2 weeks before you see your notebook. -
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
It's not only that. (I just got my first GSOD right now, actually.) After lots of flickering and odd things happening on start up.
It's annoyingly flimsy, you'd kinda have to use it yourself. I'd also probably screw something up if I opened this. On top of that I seem to have abnormal screen bleeding.
As for the keyboard, no it's not crippling, and I could live with it if it had been installed properly, but it's warped, and half is higher than the other half and it "vibrates" on every key stroke.
And finally I just realized that there's a rubber pad missing from the bottom. All of this put together tells me that this wasn't taken care of properly, and I want this to be FULLY repaired.
EDIT: And I can live for two weeks, I think. It would be worth it to me if this thing is 100% repaired. I'm going to be calling more and asking more questions to make sure they're doing this properly. -
Yeah, that is truly a horrible RMA job. You should contact tell Gary and tell him that RMA process is not only crippled atm, but some of Asus techs need to be fired.
I'll send him an email with a link to your post. This is what I sent him:
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Yes, I'm quite pissed of right now. I just ran Furmark for 4 fuc*ing minutes before it GSOD AGAIN. I didn't mention this to the rep I was talking to as I didn't know.
When Asus gets this, how would I go about getting them to fix this problem as well? I love how I didn't have ANY GSOD problems before this RMA.
EDIT: And thanks for emailing him. I really have no idea how to contact him aside from PM. Maybe he'll be able to make sure this GSOD problem will be fixed as well. -
That is a standard Canadian layout. I can't stand them, and it is a major dealbreaker for me. I grew up using the typical US layout, and in the past couple of years, it has become impossible to find a US-style keyboard in Canada, and we get stuck with a retarded \ key taking over half of the left shift, something that is entirely unnecessary.
That being said, you went through a Canadian service center, and I'm not surprised they destroyed your keyboard and replaced it with a completely inferior version. -
Also, about the GSODs, have you checked your vBIOS version? It is entirely possible that if they replaced your GPU that they didn't bother updating it (it might not be something they do in Canada yet). Check the vBIOS sticky for info about it.
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Yeah, it really sucks. The shift key is the main reason I want to change keyboards. The rep I spoke to wrote in the RMA to give me an American Standard Keyboard instead.
I'll do that, but there's not much point. I'd still RMA at this point even if my GSODs did stop. -
Haha, well, at least I don't feel so lonely right now. XD
-
I learned how to type using my left shift heavily. Because I've never had to reach to use a shift key, when I try typing on those crappy things, I have to strain just to get the shift key going. It is a really stupid idea and I hate that everyone distributing to Canada is trying to sell these pieces of crap. WE DON'T NEED THAT EXTRA KEY!
For fun, I actually had my mom type on one of those a while back. She used to teach typing courses back in the day, and I told her "open Notepad and type something." It was fun watching her struggle with it, she walked away from it frustrated. -
Mind telling us what other key there is instead of the left shift key?
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
-
Wow, that is messed up. I guess someone forgot to tell the French Canadians that you can set your keyboard to french in Windows...
I can see how irritating that would be, my pinky definitely touches the right side of the left shift button, so that half button would anger me also. -
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Yeah. Typing with it is bad enough, but I can't imagine trying to play a game where L-Shift is sprint with this kind of keyboard.
EDIT: Sorry, total change of subject, but how would I go about letting the techs know about my GSOD problem? I didn't tell the rep because I didn't know about it then...so he didn't write this down. If I include a note with the laptop would that be enough? -
I don't have problems with this layout for Gaming or using the shift key...I just kinda got used to it quickly...new computer, new computer, it all seemed natural to have a difference to me.
-
If your laptop is still workable right now, I'd suggest just flashing your vBIOS on your own, again, check the sticky. This way you can avoid having them muck around with it... that said, if you don't feel safe doing it, just include a note with the box, should be ok.
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
I've actually never touched any of my BIOS yet. :S Just never got around to it. Probably should have though.
Anyways, technically it's workable, but it's entombed in a case of bubble wrap and cardboard at the moment, and I really don't feel like prying it out. -
just a quick question, RMAed my g73 last week, on the internet page it says waiting for parts WB1.... what does WB1 mean?
-
Another quick question. After your RMA arrived at the service center, how long goes it take the ASUS website to show it as received?
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
I don't know exactly, but I believe Kaelang got the same message. He's been waiting quite a while for a new LCD to come in, so you might be in for a bit of a wait.
Mine arrived in Markham on the 2nd, but they didn't say that they had it until the 9th. I think I just got unlucky though because I sent it in on a long weekend. Normally it should be within 48 hours. -
hmm i RMAd it because of a false bios flash, i think they'll replace the mainboard and probably the gpu....oh well... then its waiting time...
-
I RMA because false BIOS flash too. Repair started on 1 sep. When it will exceed 30 days I get money or brand new laptop.
-
they recieved mine on 7 sep. im gonna wait a maximum of 4 weeks... it should take about 2-4 weeks to repair / ship the needed parts
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
At this point I wouldn't mind simply getting a new one. :/
As long as my HDD contents were transferred over, that is. -
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Alright.. Gary said he'd get on my case for me. Thank you!
-
does anyone know how long it takes for the shipment of a new mainboard/graphicscard?
-
Glad to know. It's important he does so no other Asus customer gets screwed by that incompetent Tech. It's hurting both Asus reputation and customers.
I'm amazed that there is an employee out there who has so little respect for other people's property, especially when he's being PAID to do the repair. It's not like he's a slave and he has some legitimate reason to be so disrespectful. -
Agreed. I'd rather have slow but professional work than rushed and sloppy.
BTW, welcome back ziddy
-
[email protected] Notebook Evangelist
Yeah. I've actually been quite happy with the actual customer support. It's just the techs actually doing the job that seem to be a little less than mentally retarded monkeys. But I totally agree with you. And yes, welcome back.
G73 RMA results. Were problems solve or not?
