From what i read here and there , 900/1800/1600 is already great considering stock values , i've even never gone that far with mine ... ( i'm a little coward you know )

Just to say that i'm not sure it's safe to push it further ...

Btw , how much did you get on 3Dmark 06 with thoses values ? just wondering

I run 900/1800/1625, you can try to go higher but you will be pushing the limits of the card. Ive seen some people go higher, but it all depends on your card. Im perfectly happy with my overclock as its perfectly stable. OCing core another 20-30 mhz wont do that much, and it could make your card unstable. If you really need more performance though you could give it a try in small increments.

3d mark is really bad for stressing your gpu though, play battlefield for awhile and if you notice any artifacts then dial back the overclock. You can also try furmark for stressing the GPU but that puts an unrealistic amount of stress on the card. Crysis 2 works well for testing realistic amounts of stress also.

    thanks guys!

AFTER BF3: BF3 2 hours=max 65 degrees getting around 30-35 fps in game. room for more guys?

65 is totally safe, thats exactly what I get up to when playing Crysis 2 for awhile. When I overclocked my card I didnt even see any change in temps from stock to 900/1800/1625. I think the fans just ramp up a bit to compensate, although I still cant ever hear them. You can just keep pushing it up bit by bit to see how far your card is willing to go.

ok im going to try to go from 900/1800/1600 to 920/1840/1625
ill let you guys know the results

LASTEST: ok so i tried 920/1840/1625 and got worst scores than with 900/1800/1600
Then i tried 900/1800/1625 and got P2628 vs P2616 with 900/1800/1600. So alittle gain by adding 25 to the memory.
time to play BF3 for a while to keep an eye on temps and report back my findings. performance is key but i want it to be safe

You can get different scores when running the same overclock, the benchmarking software isnt perfect. Run a benchmark a few times with the same OC and see what you get as the highest.

hello boys THX for everything you wrote here...so I decided to OC my G74SX too. Im using the newest nVidia Inspector and did some clock 940/1600/1880. Used furmark I made some stress tests and got temps ONLY upto 70C with no artefacts. But in real gaming (Crysis 2 , BF3) sometimes it ended up with directX errors. So I dont know if its the GTX560 OC limit or only some directX problems or is it NV insector??? I dont know because instead this its quite stable and problems are very rare :( OC is awesome cant play without it

Furmark is pointless with fermi generation notebooks, because they have a strict power limiter that prevents the card from crashing or overheating. Basically you will not experience any driver crashes/bsod with 940/1600 but in games probably you will crash in a matter of minutes.

Real stable OC would be the one you achieve in gaming, such Crysis 2.

But also Crysis 2 needs a voltage bump on notebooks and desktop specially after a certain clock speed, its a known issue.

Nv inspector doesnt create any problem, youre not stable thats all, plus those clocks are high, the standard is 900/1600 afaik.

Try small clocks bumps such 920/1600 and see if youre stable, or back down to 900/1600 and do your tests.

THX for response I will test 920/1600 more and will see how will GC behave :) so you recommend to check OC stability only in games and not the benchmark SW???

edit: directX problem and display driver recovery in BF3 after 30mins OC@920/1600 have to go down :(

    Removing bloatware doesnt really help.
IMHO you need a fresh windows install.
    Anyway you need:

    - ThrottleStop running for keeping the CPU from throttling (<- required!)
    - Nvidia Inspector for overclocking
    - Nvidia verde notebook 285.62 whql as drivers

Forgive Asus drivers as they are old and underperforming.
Also Asus released a beta driver 285.69 and I've opened a thread for it, maybe you want to check them out.

Nah i guess not. Stick with .62 whql :) and...

..nope. Asus uses a built-in gpu in the mobo for G74sx, even if it was replaceable you would need a specific asus gpu card, like it is in our G53Sw or Sx. The gpu may be the same found in some other brands such clevo and msi, but the whole layout is different.
Probably youll need a new bios as well for it.
In other words, not gonna happen.

what exactly the throttling problem is in the matter with G74 (I know what the throttling generaly is)??? Before, i had C2D T7700@2,4GHz but never had problems with CPU performance...

do you know how to do LEGAL fresh instal??? because after recovery the system will install all that bloatware again THX

PS: dont want to download pirate version os OS

There should be a link somewhere to download the windows 7 disc from microsoft.

Personally I just used pirate bay for the ISO and then used my own windows 7 key from my laptop which makes for a perfectly legal install.

overclock with 902/1803/1625 and got 40 fps average on bf3 1920x1080 high with 2x AA medium. max gpu temp was 64*C. does anyone get some green flashing lines on screen while playing bf3? it only does it for a split second once in a while.

Yeah , it has some. Dice said they correct this from beta , sure they are way less present than before , but i still got them.

For me , my actual overclock is 880 / 1760 Sharder / 1600 Memory , and i play BF3 on Low / medium @ 60FPS @ 1920*1080, the lowest i get is sometime 45 for a few sec when i'm in smoke and see far away , but everytime i'm inside or do not look 45 miles away , i'm stuck between 55-60 which is , for me , the best way to play a MP game ... i can't play it with 30 FPS , under 45 i feel like a disadvantage

    I use it.

The only test i made with gamebooster with 3DMark , and i got a little boost , but you know benchmark are sometimes variable so it may not be from 3DMark

I use Gamebooster on every computer while gaming , cause even if it's a negligeable boost , closing programs and windows services give you more ram ( wich is not usefull with 8B i know ) , but every CPU cycle used for thoses services are now free for your game.

Several test had been made with gamebooster (not with G74 but in general ) , and stats said that it may help from 1 to 3-4 fps in some games ( i remember an old test from a computer with a Core 2 duo with GTX 285 , Gamebooster give 5 more fps on Crysis and Far cry 2 , but it was a few years ago )

Gamebooster will never make an unplayable game playable , but i could help a little bit to get more FPS

I used to use it on my old crappy laptop with a core 2 duo, gave me a few extra frames in WoW. Not bothering anymore, since this laptop just beasts every game I play, its just not worth the hassle.

I see some Alienware activity so put my 560m 3Dmark scores here for sharing.

The highest I can push is 910/1700/1820

Currently made a request for bios modificaton
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 570 560 460 ATI Radeon HD 6970 6950 6870 5970 :: MVKTech :: On the Edge of Technology - Re:GTX 560m BIOS attached - Can you increase the voltage please? - MVKTech Support Forums
If that comes around we might be able to push it even further, like this:

    Current vbios:
    perf level [0] - P (12 ) = 0,820 V @ 50/135/101
    perf level [1] - P ( 8 ) = 0,820 V @ 202/324/405
    perf level [2] - P ( 0 ) = 1,000 V @ 775/1250/1550

Requested vbios: raise P8 state to 1,000V to avoid power throttling:
    perf level [0] - P (12 ) = 0,820 V @ 50/135/101
    perf level [1] - P ( 8 ) = 1,000 V @ 775/1250/1550
    perf level [2] - P ( 0 ) = 1,000 V @ 775/1250/1550

No , i really didn't enjoy the game at thoses framerate.

Behind 45 FPS , it's just like if your mouse had 10Kg on it , you're slow and way less efficient.Especially at 30 fps ...

It's not unplayable , but i'd rather not play than playing a game at thoses framerate. SMOKE GRENADE ! Oh , NOES , IT FALL AT 15 FPS I CANT MOVE.

    No thanks :)

I was thinking exactly the same thing ...

But after a few overclocks , a 17' inch screen , if you don't put AA*4 , visual from low to high are so little that you don't even care.

Play on low , the game is cool , smooth and enjoyable.

We play on laptop , if we don't pay 3000€ , we need to know that " powerfull game " will run way better on desktop. Just think about it , nearly every game came out till today works GREAT. Don't want to regret a 1400€+ buy just because of ONE game ( that i play :) )

BTW , new drivers are comming , and everybody says that BF3 runs even better. I need to try them :D

Point is, and i realized it now, that you dont need a 3 grand laptop to play some games like BF3 or Witcher 2.

Since im off from the G-Series bandwagon, id like to share my experience.
Now im a clevo user (again), the laptop is specced in sig.

Cost? 1,400e including shipping, warranty and the specs as listed. The default one, which came with 4gb and a 2630qm was just 1249euro.

Still it retained same wifi, disk space and gpu card, which matters most, the monster gtx485m.

Now if we think about the price, my former g53sw was 1249euro back in july.
They had this price on my new laptop from august.

Yes the fans are a bit noiser, theres nothing like G-Series cooling system, but who cares, they are really bearable and they work extremely well.

Not to mention the whole performance the laptop has gained compared to the g53. Same price, huge power boost.

Note to myself: next time check around carefully before jumping the gun. I regret to have bought the g53 at this point specially considering the price difference...althought it gave me a good time. It was fun to push it beyond its limits. :)

And for the sake of the argument, ill throw in some initial benchmarks. Im still testing the system, so far the stable oc - temp wise is 680-1600.

    Crysis 2 runs at Extreme+dx11+blur on at 45-50fps 1080p.
Witcher 2 Ultra (no uber) from 32 to 45. Dips to 28 sometimes. 1080p.
Dirt 3 2xAA ultra+reflections-shadows to high: vsynched 60fps otherwise it goes to 70-67 of average.

Sold my g53 for 975€. Tweaked and ready to game, with overclocking profiles as well.
Good thing was i didnt registered accidental damage nor asus warranty, so the buyer basically had to do the whole registration by his name :)
Well laptop was fairly new, i bought it in july, therefore ive shipped it with screen cover and keyboard cover.
Ive thrown in a small asus mouse as well, i think it was a pretty good deal.
Basically ive received the money on the 3 november, paid the evening of the same day.
They started to work on the assembly on 4, shipped it from germany on 6, arrived yesterday.
Awesome price, awesome machine, professional work. I advice them without doubts.

offtopic: i dont think the new owner got the ADP o_o dont those things have a deadline of 60 days to register?

ontopic: with the price drop of 53sw, I think the asus's (is that the plural form?) are a better "bang-for-your-buck" kinda thing now (back then, I agree with you, probably wasnt worth it)

But now, its like comparing m14x (the asus) to an m17x (the clevo) in terms of performance

In Italy things works a bit differently. You need to manually register the laptop to Asus/partner warranty service otherwise for them it will look like an unopened box, like it's still shelved somewhere.
You have one full year to register for the ADP :)

About the SW price drop, I've seen it going as low as 1000€ here. If you consider the machine I got for 300 more there's no really a reason to go past it.

Hey guys I'm new to this forum but I've been reading it a lot lately and I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's input and help for people like me who had no idea how to overclock. I just got my G74SX last week and I've been messing around with overclocking on skyrim and bf3.

I've been using nvidiainspection and throttlestop. I overclocked mine to 900/1800/1625 and the tests and got P2621. The temp on throttlestop topped at 70degrees after gaming for a few hours. I was wondering if this temperature is fine and how I can tell how much higher I can overclock it.

Thanks again for all the help!

70 degrees is fine. You are probably reaching the limits of your card though. You can try and push it more, I have mine at 932/1865/1749 and it seems stable. All cards are different though. Just bump it up a bit and game for awhile, if you dont see any artifacts then you are good to go with those clocks. With the G74 you wont be limited by temps, but just by the clocks the card is willing to do at the voltage its set at.

Great I'll try it out tonight.

And do you just use these settings when youre gaming and then bump them down for everything else?

I dont think artifacts are the right factor of unstableness...on mine everytime the driver resets or the card resets itself to stock values...I was on 940 and all tests run just fine in high performance games after some time (15mins, 30mins 1 hour, everytime different gameplay time) driver resets GPU or directX fault appears on stock everything was just fine... :) Im wonder how to push up a little bit voltage ;)

I have one question before maybe trying to overclock my video card. If I don't screw up my card and go slowly and reach a nice set of clocks and someday something happens to my laptop (or GPU) and I need to send the laptop to Asus, can they detect the changes and will this void my warranty?

You need to make sure that the software doesn't say that you were overclocking. Also, there needs to be another plausible reason why it happened; poor ventilation, etc.
