I had about 7F-8F higher ambient than Element, but like he said, he was unmodded and was using higher memory clocks.

    HATE SO MUCH HATE.

EDIT: Tore my heatsink apart and did some changes. Removed all but three coper blocks on the GPU heatsink. Removed the copper shims on the northbrige and GPU. Replaced northbridge shim with a Bergquist pad. Replaced GPU shim with a (relatively) thick application of MX-3.

Doing the usual Furmark run, my fans will kick in at 84C (86C used to be the fan threshold before I changed up my mod), and drop the temperature to a low of 79C or so. However, it'll start to steadily climb after that. I'm writing that off to uncured paste.

This my exact setup (except the berguist pad still using the stock one), but i do feel i place way to much MX3, after placing i applied pressure with my hand on top of heatsink, i kinda think the 2 screws dont do that much presure, making me think that it will climb up and not do full touch again... i know sounds picky but next time ill just let the 2 screws do the spreading.

I get very similar results, in Furmark 8xAA, extreme burning, 1366x768, cycle between 85-77C, never stabilizes. Im hoping the fake vent will drop in the high 70s or 80s, and not using the 2nd fan speed.

I put my computer to sleep after finishing a Furmark run, keeping the Zalman on to cool it down. After giving it about fifteen minutes to cool, I turned it back to fire up Furmark again.

I spike up to 86C. Fans drop it down all the way to 76C before slowing. After that, it spikes up all the way to 89C, whereupon the fans drop it down to 76C after a bit. After that second spike, it'll go up to 85C before the fans kick in and drop it to 77C. It'll hang around 77C for a while before it starts to slowly climb (fan still on). No stablization, it seems. Oy.

im not telling anyone to do anything...im suggesting, not commanding...i deleted some the original to add some more things.

    ---

imo, stop worrying about the darn temperatures so much. in the past 3 weeks, i havent opened hwmonitor/gpuz/cpuz. i used to worry so much...now i dont at all. u assume the G51 will die with temps in the 90s. I think differently, same as with the plastic over the vent on the bottom. ASUS is resourceful company, revenue over 20billion and more than a 100K employees. i dont think they just put random stuff into a laptop for no reason. you may argue "Why didnt they put the copper blocks?", which has improved people's temperatures dramatically. maybe weight? iuno, there is a reason a major corporation does the things they do. if you do argue with what they do, why dont we complain to them or better yet let them fire the employees to replace with people on NBR who know what their doing ( if they turn out to be correct)? im sure that designing laptop cooling for a major notebook seller like ASUS will bring in the big bucks :D

this is all talk tho, i will see 1-2yrs from now, if my GPU dies, too bad for me, i'll get over it and buy an alienware. if it doesnt, i'm glad i havent wasted the time/effort on this + all the worrying that caused commotion.

who knows...you guys already have pretty nice temps, stop worrying so much! srsly 60C during a L4D run? y wouldn't u stop while ur there?

if ur trying to become a "hardcore modder", do like k-tron suggested, get the tools. dont get me wrong, im not saying these mods are worthless, they are brilliant. good effort by every1 here, especially forge + SS. but to proclaim starting the Renaissance era of cooling, you cant rely on ebay sinks + screw driver/drill + paste. in SS case, you will really need to WOW us as you claims your Siberian "top secret" KGB project will do. complete redesign of chassis/backplate? removal of old heatpipes/heatsinks with "custom" molded parts ? new higher CFM fan (power/size)? extras?

point is, K-TRON is partially correct. if you're an enthusiast modder, do what it takes to strive above what an average joe can do. if you're trying just to lower temps form 90s-->80s, go and do this mod as it WILL do what it shows in the results. we needa find out first, will our component die. if not, are we just doing this for bragging rites? do ppl really like having heavier laptops, holes in the bottom of their laptop (big one + perforated) just so they have lower temps as someone who hasnt done it. then as element suggest, this can be a hobby just like OCing is to some, just for the sheer enjoyment of it.

    *prepares for forum retaliation*

I did the copper block mod, except I only used about 15 blocks. They are spread out a bit to give some air movement space (which I think is ideal for NC2000 to do its work).

I haven't run Furmark for long yet but just did a quick run of a few minutes and it goes to 87, then drops down to 85.... this is at 600/1600/1000.

That just shows that you don't care about the thermal welfare of your notebook.

It will eventually in the long run. How about you be the test subject for us and choke your GPU fan.

So how do you think differently? Care to provide examples or ideas?

    Irrelevant to your premise.

Every notebook design is compromised to satisfy the market it is catered to.

There is no such thing as correct or incorrect in engineering a notebook. Everything that is factored into building a notebook is strictly arbitrary. Any company can build the coolest notebook, or the thinnest notebook, or the smallest notebook, but it is up to what they want to sell and to what extent do they want to build the notebook given the resources available to them.

That doesn't mean that the higher-ups in Asus will accept the design. Remember that the engineers have to follow a certain criteria that the white collars give them. An engineer doesn't always have the full freedom he gets to build what is best.

And you're going to treat that Alienware or any other notebook that you get in the future the same way seeing the level of care and responsbility that you are giving your notebook. You need to take care of your assets. Do not take them for granted.

It's not a waste of time. Modding is also a hobby for many people, including myself. We do it because it's fun and that it's better than taking drugs.

We mod because we can. We want the best for our notebooks even though they don't need it. It's just like how you were talking about this amazing gaming desktop you plan to build not too long ago.

Says the person who has no experience in modding whatsoever. Again, defining what is hardcore modding and what isn't is strictly arbitrary. To the vast majority, this is hardcore, but to some elitist know-it-alls like K-TRON, it's simply child's play.

It's figurative speech. The Clevo and Asus forum wouldn't have entered this age had I not publicized and constantly posted my revisions over and over. I'm sure there are lurkers that have done far more than me but rarely post, or not post at all, but I took the liberty of taking heart into what I did and shared it with you all. To me, that is what counts; to be able to gather the mass of users and unite in a cooling expo to put effort into building something we can be proud of.

It will be a big wow. But not on the level that you expect. Again, I am using figurative speech. My upcoming cooling overhaul will still have several aspects from my previous one, but will be improved to a level where there will be less wasted material. For me, it's going to take a lot of my time and effort, which is a farcry compared to what I can do with quarter-million dollar materials and equipment, but it will still be very effective despite how you see it as primitive.

Who are you to say that? The average Joe doesn't have the deep pockets to dish out on equipment and materials. $200 for most people would already be expensive to mod a notebook. I don't want to hear you ever talk about enthusiasts without considering the monetary barriers. Most users only want to mod as far as their wallet will allow. Modding a notebook in itself is already considered on the enthusiast level. How many people do you see everyday that has a mod as cool as ours?

Going from the 90's to the 80's is a big leap for a lot of people. Just knowing that they got their GPU out of the danger zone is relieving.

Again, we do this because it's fun and it's beneficial. Just because our components don't surpass 90*C doesn't mean we should brag about it. Lower temps are always better. Like I said, if you want to find out "will our components die," I want you to fire up Furmark and leave your notebook on your bedsheets and have it peak at 95*C for 12 hours with the GPU failsafe threshold set to 96*C.

Apparently yes. My M570TU was 10.7lbs and I didn't mind one bit. You guys shouldn't be worrying about the weight as well since the G51 doesn't have that much room to put a large amount of copper in anyway.

That's the first goddamn intelligent statement I've heard all night.

Then why the hell did you make such a snub-nosed post if you don't care what other people think about it, meaning that you're not going to reply to them. You need to earn your wings and shed the sweat and blood that we have before you open your mouth. If you want to post stuff that goes against the grain, you better be ready to back it up with qualitative evidence and facts because the points that you made in your post have already been hammered down a long time ago.

It doesn't matter if this is the internet. The internet is just a medium of communication. You're still responsible for what you publish. If you back away from it, that just makes you a coward and a hypocrite because you know just as well as I do that you made beefs in your post, some of which are obvious.

ummm no, that is a good example of mod tho. most ppl dont think of that, hell i didnt even know what it was till i googled it. i never said they have a perfect design, that is stupid. what im saying is, there is reason a major corporation like ASUS would keep stuff like that plastic cover on top of the vent. even Clevo did it with their new notebook. i remember SS said someth. related to the higher-end i7 920QM, but that is irrelevant in the G50/G51 case, so it must be someth. else.

these mods are good, but some most users wont need this. especially ones with the ASUS 2 yr warranty vs Worst Buy's (*possibility of voiding* even though you may buy a new backplate/take off copper sinks, you never know, 1000/100,000 employees could be specified to look at that before you claim warranty...lol). that is what im trying to convey, but like im always am, i'll prolly be wrong, my GPU die...send it in for recovery by ASUS then i will ask some mod to rename my alias as "Should've_Listened_to_SS" or someth. along those lines.

to SS post, yes internet is communication portal, but in the end, it doesnt mean anything. i could be honorable on the internet or a coward. ofc. i dont wanna be the latter, but the thing i published were my OPINIONS, i never said anything factual. it was just a mere suggestion to maybe stop while your doing good with your temps. obviously, this is hobby, much like a few months ago it was a hobby for me to OC and beat Joker's score...i understand that fully. for me, if it weren't for the warranty which is like the training wheels for keeping my laptop alive, i would mod it. you guys already ditch the training wheels and get straight onto customizing it by putting brake disks, higher caliber shifting mechanisms etc etc.

i'll prolly reply back to that long response you put so much time into 2morrow, i just finished my hw and am about to sleep.

Then what is the meaning of NBR? What is the meaning of the internet if to you it doesn't mean anything? What is the meaning to every helpful post made that has benefited countless users across the globe?

Yes, they were your opinions, but they had no exemplary proof to back it up. All you did was made opinions with speculations based on "what if's."

I don't think anyone would want to stop something that they think is a fun hobby, unless fun is doesn't mean anything as well.

That was our decision to make. For us, the warranty doesn't dictate what we can or cannot do. For others, it does. But because you have not done anything to the inside of your notebook yet, you have nothing to claim against. In the Spring, you should start this mod and see the benefits that it will bring for your system.

There's not much you can reply to. I've already got you covered from all corners.

So what is that reason? Enlighten me please.

I know you saw my post about why Clevo put that sticker over the CPU fan intake on the W860CU. It's the same with the G51.

Again, a load of blind speculation. You don't know how the RMA department at Asus works. In the RMA department, each technician inspects the notebook for defects and tampering, then tests the notebook to determine if it is stable and to observe any issues inclusive with the end-user's reported issues.

Users that don't "need" it chose not to for their own reasons whether it be financial, or skill-wise. But even users with the two year Asus warranty have modded their notebooks because of the benefits brought through in this thread.

I suppose that sometimes the only way that one can learn is from the hard way.

wow u reply dam fast, you must have this page set to auto-refresh and constantly are looking out for my reply -_-

i was just checking my emails/grades...looks like one more response.

    [too lazy to quote today]

wow, srsly you really are nit-picky arent you? u honestly thought that when i *accidentally* wrote "it doesnt mean anything", i was referring to internet in general? -_- if you didnt understand they context, i'll make it clear. i meant "to SS post, yes internet is communication portal, but in the end, it doesnt mean anything (in respect to backing up claims and not being a coward)". the next sentence clearly tells you that...its not like in real-life, where you say someth. in front of a person and he will pressure you to answer. on the internet anything goes, which is one of the major flaws. all those responses were IF btw, you could respond to some1 post or u couldnt. you could be burning me up on this forum, and i could choose not to respond. but i do, cuz i enjoy communicating with people over a topic, as even if i lose or win an arguement, it makes me more knowledgeable.

and yes i based it on what if's. what if my notebook doesnt fail? what if it does? the point is, if you're independent enough, you can mod it. if you fail at the mod, the warranty is voided and ur screwed. My viewpoint is, as long as im under warranty, i wont do anything that mite void it. when its over i mite do someth. but chances are i'll ditch this laptop for a new one. so its a double edged sword in rite context, if you relatively proficient in handling notebook innards like yourself, you can discard the warranty as you fix whatever problems you have.

dont worry, the reply will make u spend another 20mins burning me up :)

    EDIT: extra replies...
i don't know the reason, you don't know the reason FOR SURE as well. you probably have the most accurate of all hypothesis made, but you never know...

i remember you said it had someth. to do with the high energy requirement of the extreme i7, yet the C2D AND C2Q dont have those problems. so how is it the same? im not argueing this time, i actually really wanna know...cuz im sure the G50Vt, where the design first started had relatively low powered CPU compared the power hungry C2Q of today. sooo help with that question?

again, the people who do mod it even voiding warranty are proficient enough to fix any problems that might arise. if say my GPU does die, it will have no clue how to fix the GPU on one like ASUS', where i cant just "go on ebay, search, buy, remove old, install new...ALL DONE"

k srsly time to sleep no more wasting time.

Everything is real life. Stop taking the internet so carelessly. That kind of mentality of saying whatever you want with disregard to what others think about it says a lot about yourself.

Yes, that is the unfortunate nature of the internet. But you need to realize that not everyone is like that, and especially the people on this forum and more specifically this thread. Take it seriously. Don't run around posting controversial speculations without logical support. Because we are continuing to enter deeper into the internet age, we need to keep the level of responsibility that we hold off the internet the same as when we are on the internet. Of course, there are some places where one can be carefree like on Counter Strike. But this is an public forum where information is shared.

They are speculative inquiries, but they had no hard explanation as to why you are asking them.

Yeah, but the way you approached it was relaying a negative tone to it that belittles the concept of modding on the "non-enthusiast" level.

Good. Then keep that notion to yourself and stop trolling this thread.

    From post #1156 to #1162. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5547289

I think this is the post you were refering to.

Typically from my experience working in small computer repair shops before, fried parts are usually repaired by resoldering points on the board. Lately this has reached the convenience of the end-user by baking in regards to GPU's. This is in general though. But for GPU's, most of the time it's because the memory has fried or the soldering on the memory has become so brittle.

I wonder if the sager 8690 will clock that high with the 280, and how would the 2 measure OC to its limits. Either way my next computer will be either sager or alienware, unless asus releases a dual cooling setup laptop.

im not scrutinizing the attempts of these mods, they are wonderful and brilliant for most users to do with relative ease, especially a n00b like me. the "hardcore" mod thing that i mentioned about K-TRON, was actually specified at SS, since he was the one claiming this so called cooling innovation. ofc. then as SS mentions, there is the monetary barrier, but his claims were suggestive to me that he was going to be K-TRON'ing his notebook. im sorry my poor grammar came out to offend with a belittling tone.

    a) [before knowledge that most ppl do it here for fun/as a hobby] maybe u should stop modding your notebook so much as it runs nice, quiet and cool now. u *mite* screw someth. up in the process, you never know.
    b) [after knowledge that ppl do it for fun] o then, ofc. continue with the mods, should u tell me to stop gaming once i beat a game or stop OC'ing once i smash a record?
    c) for NEW USERS reading this, they should really think if they are proficient enough to do the mod, possibly voiding a warranty, risk the GPU *still* dying OR NOT and maybe just general ASUS failure of some other sort. then what will they do? try find a technician for local repair? that is a crap load harder than just RMA'ing a notebook provided you never tampered with it.

yes you can "bake" your notebook, tho that seems really unprofessional and possible cause permanent damage as ive seen with the xbox 360 towel trick (i've owned 3 xboxes in my life, two from china which couldnt be claimable by warranty so i towel tricked it and it didnt work so i just sold the dead thing for 50bucks). i dont know about the repairing process too much, but imo i would like to get it repaired by either a qualified technician within my suburban area with a GUARANTEE or the actual manufacturer' RMA department. the former can sometimes be trouble, finding him/her, are they actually able to fix it? with the latter, if ASUS cant fix it, they'll send u a new one.

if my grammar has come out the wrong way let me correct it...i love the mods that ASUS community has come up with regarding the G51. you dont think i like to click on every picture some1 post of the innards of their OWN customized G51? i'll be one of the first to read SS new cooling innovation because i liek how users collaborate on the internet sharing their ideas.

The GTX 280M in both the W860CU and W870CU can hit 680/1700/1000 @ 1.03v easily. I consider that clock set the new standard from 600/1500/900 @ 1v.

If you thought that I was suggesting that I was going to "K-TRON" my notebook, you're deeply mistaken. This is where your ill mastery of the English language is leading you to misunderstandings again. You have been on this forum long enough to know how I deliver my speeches. Optimistic sarcasm and willful exaggeration are two of my favorite elements of speech that I like to use when preparing to unveil an upcoming milestone.

It doesn't matter if the user has "before knowledge" or "after knowledge." Any kind of notebook modding has risks and potential consequences to it regardless of the level of skill and experience that the user has. I have been building and modding desktops since you were still learning the alphabet, and even now I still have my occasional screw ups. New users are blessed with having a thread like this to give them an idea of how to start and how to plan out their own creations. We've done all the hard work, and they are being spoon fed the easy way.

All of the disclaimers associated with modding a notebook are self explanatory. It is up to the user if he wants to proceed or not. Through properly modding using the methods covered in this thread, the possibility of any component on a notebook dying is still there. If the component is dying, then the mod just slows down the process. But that shouldn't happen since the mods will keep the GPU within a healthy temperature.

Again, all of the mods in this thread are easily reversible. If for some reason a part on the notebook is malfunctioning and warrants the needs for an RMA, then all of the mods can be stripped and the notebook can be sent back for repairs. But keep in mind that none of the mods are detrimental to the notebook and are not the cause of possible future failures.

The towel fix is not comparable to actually baking the component. Non-lead soldering doesn't begin to liquidize until ~190*C and the XBox will not get hot enough for a long enough time for it to happen. Also, the system is operating while it is "cooking" itself so it will actually do more damage than good. That is the reason why you couldn't towel fix your XBox's.

As for GPU baking, it is a crude way of repairing faulty GPU's, but it works. This is because the GPU is not operating and the user has control of the temperature in the oven.

Of course, anything that fails within warranty should be RMA'd. But small things like faulty RAM or a bad HDD can be user replaced. Generally, if there are any lemon parts on a notebook within the first month or two, they will fail giving you ample time to RMA the notebook. Notebooks rarely break down within three years unless the user has not been taking care of it.

You are one of the many people on my invitation list once I finish my cooling overhaul in January. And now that I have the service manual for my notebook, I can further plan my mod. But for now, I still need to get the materials as they are out of stock at many of my favorite stores.

My w860 never hit 680 stable at default voltage. The max I could push it to stable was around 650ish (maybe less). I never overvolted it to find it's max limit.

how in the heck do u get such high OC then with alienware if you said STOCK everything? by stock everything, you also mean voltage correct? cuz that is unbelievably high for gtx 260m, i guess its the alienware dark magic at work courtesy of dell engineering. then again, this stuff is luck just like EIement's Golden One.

edit: nvm, just remembered that GTX 260M in ASUS is also uv'ed, the alienware is at stock 1V, so it should ofc. achieve much higher. still skeptical that GTX 280M clocks cant reach as high tho.

SS also mentioned something about a voltage regulator or whatever missing in the Asus 260M that cripples it's OC potential. Skeptical or not, my 280M clocks would not go above 650 stable, 3dmark would just freeze. I think I even mentioned it to SS during a conversation when I still had the 8690. As for the M15x, yes everything is stock from the factory, I've made no changes to the thermal paste, cooling or voltages.

The same concept applies here. The GTX 260M has 16 of it's shaders lasered out, so the card has a bit more leeway for overclocking over the GTX 280M. But even with that extra space for a few MHz higher, the GTX 260M will still be slower than the GTX 280M. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5244806&postcount=267

Also, the MXM 3.0 PCI-E socket allows for a more stable card compared to the previous MXM 2.1 socket. Supplied current from the motherboard and memory bandwidth allowed are increased on the new standard.

For the Asus GTX 260M's, the cards do not have the "HE" tab, which is essentially just additional power lanes. They are not needed for the card to function, but it does keep the card stable at higher clocks. It doesn't matter anyway since the Asus GTX 260M's don't have it and the notebook itself is not thermally capable of handling that high clocks with a raised voltage.

Hey G51J guru's, I thought the grill n the bottom was for ventilation until I put in a ssd and saw that it is covered. WFT is up with that? Looks easy to remove foil that covers the grill and open it up. Why drill holes?

btw, I purchased by 51 on Oct 27 from gentech.

Under the black EMI shielding is the actual backpanel. That's the part you need to remove.

o ok, i didnt know that having less shaders = more OC ability. ofc. its unlikely that the second-highest card will beat the highest end card, i mean if the only difference between the GTX 260m vs GTX 280m was core/shade/mem clocks it could happen in special cases of cherry-picked gtx 260ms. nvidia had to change the gtx 280m at however they could so they was a logical reason to choose this over a gtx 260m.

ahh dam that is yet ANOTHER reason alienware (im guessing clevo also uses 3.0) is besting all other gaming notebooks out there, if they were to maybe put a numpad, HDMI and 2nd HDD slot, this IMO would be the laptop of many men's dreams.

and yea, if you look from the outside its hard plastic uniform to the backplate material, which must lie underneath that black flexible plastic.

Theoretically, the GTX 260M would need to increase it's clocks ~14% higher to make up for disabled shaders to match the GTX 280M.

FYI, the 280M with max clocks scored lower than my current OC'd 260M. I couldn't break 13.5k with the 280M no matter how hard I tried yet I did it with ease with the OC'd 260M. I still haven't reached my max core OC yet, shaders are topping off at 1700mhz before I get slight artifacts in 3dmark06. I haven't even touched the memory yet which I'm sure I can hit 1050-1100 for benchmarking. There are others out there like Suade80 that have broke 14k with their overvolted 280M so my goal is to at least hit 14k with this 260.

but arent u doing the test where u hit 13.5K in 1280x800 instead of 1280x1024 when u showed me the scrnshot (nearly 300k pixels less)? its kind of hard having a awkward resolution like 900p to use against the standard 4:3 1280x1024. if you do it at 900p it will hinder the performance, but 1280x800 will boost. any medium in between?
