To what i remember Ceramique it was their pre AS5 paste (just thermal paste, no stick), which was pretty good i might say. If you are talking about Epoxy type ( Arctic Silver Thermal Epoxy or Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive), well it would make it permanent, any misplace or whatever and you can no longer take them out that easy (imagine RMA or repair with those thing inside), but if you think you will never ever will remove them go ahead, im still going with tape.
-
Yes, those are the one i'm talking about .. i knew that it was hard to remove but no permanent, i suppose that tape is better so
Btw .. can someone tell me which are the screw i have to remove from the back to apply the thermal paste @ CPU & GPU ? are the ones around the Fan only ? -
-
I am so happy with my undervolt lol..Am currently idling at 42-43C. CPU temps are higher cuz I'm listening to music tho

Sadly, it looks like I can't maintain sub-90 temperatures at 80F ambient. After about sixteen minutes my 550/1374/835 topped at 90, upon which I turned off the Furmark test.
-
So I finally got around to cutting a hole in the new panel. I've been so busy with work that I haven't had much time to work on the mod. I was being rushed by the gf since the dremel noise was bothering her and I ended up scratching the silver ring on the bottom but whatever, I'm looking for function rather than form. I still need to order a proper grill, copper sinks etc. I did a 3dmark06 run with the GPU at 550/950/1375 and the GPU peaked at 90C which is about 7C cooler than before I cut the hole. That's a fairly drastic drop in temperatures so I'm pleased thus far. Getting a second fan in there is going to be very difficult if not impossible since there is very little vertical clearance from the GPU to the bottom cover. I could stick a very low profile fan in the 2nd HDD bay but I'm not sure it would really improve things much in that position. Anyway, here's a picture of the cut out hole:
-
Was that with or without a cooler? I think with a cooler, that mod, and my undervolt I wouldn't touch mid 70s in a 3dmark run. can't wait to test it out.
-
Without a cooler, I don't have one. I need to search this thread for copper sink recommendations so I can order those + the japanese tape. I'm still unsure of which filter to order to cover up the hole as well. -
-
5150joker- do you have any old speakers you don't use? I have a few around my place with a sort of wire mesh that covers them (old PC speakers) and I'm gonna use it as my filter. I plan on using some metal clips to allow interchangeability between the cut out hole, and the original plate, so I can definitively test the effect of the hole on other components, on the CPU itself, and so that if I am on the go I can guarantee nothing gets in.

Ok everything has been ordered! Got the following copper sinks:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.24500

The same mesh as abula and the tape that soviet recommended. I still need to find a thin enough fan to fit over the GPU without obstructing the bottom plate. If anyone has suggestions please post them. -
I'll get you a pic tomorrow.
Unfortunately not but I got the same 80mm mesh that Abula did so hopefully it works out alright. My GPU is currently idling between 49-51C and it's pretty hot here in Florida. I can't wait to see the end result of this mod. -
.

I should have everything in a few days so I'll let you know how it works out. Which epoxy did you buy for the mesh? I did a stress test just now using furmark at 1680x1050 4xAa, post processing + burn mode (GPU at 550/950/1375) and it peaked at 97C. Before the mod, it would push my GPU up to 103-104C (at that point I used to cancel it) so there's a very large gain in temps so far. The only caveat is that the laptop must be on a flat surface (for now) since I don't have a filter and the fan blades can be hit from the bottom. My idle temps haven't gone down too much, I think it was about 52C before but it's the peak temps that have changed drastically. -

How hot in Florida, exactly. Remember, accuracy, accuracy, accuracy.
-
It's about 81F out right now and about 80F in my room. During the day it gets to about 85F in here (90+ outside) unless I turn on the AC and push it back down to 78ish. BTW can you run furmark w/the settings I used including GPU speed to compare? I'm curious to see how close our temps are since I think both our ambient temps are close. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
And 90C with no copper and untouched stock paste. Seems very promising.
-
Just brought a pack of 18x12x4 copper HSs and some of the decent thermal tape. If all goes to plan then I should get some great cooling as long as they can all fit
I will be doing this on a G50VT-X1. I will do a couple benchies with 3D Mark 06 -
Im still trying to figure out which cooler, the Zalman NC2000 or the CryoLx will be best with the "big hole" mod.
The one plus for the CryoLx is that it now comes with an external power source so you don't have to tax the usb's, since I already have a mouse, headset, G15 keyboard all running now.
Just hard since no one around me seems to carry either to test and return if necessary -
I'm going to go with the Zalman. The CryoLX is too bulky for my needs. Edit: Actually I'm going to hold off on a cooler and see how this mod goes. Once I get the hole blocked by a mesh and copper in place, I may not need a cooler at all. -

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the true philosophy of the Soviet Mod. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If Joker does his mod at least as good as mine--which shouldn't be hard, since I was like a Neanderthal thumping around with my computer--he's not going to need it. I get perfectly satisfactory temps only using an Xpad.
Since I do have a a Zalman, though, I do use it. I might not "need" it, but hey, why not go even cooler. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Sure. I'll go rig up my notebook to my air conditioning again. I might not "need" it, but hey, why not go even cooler.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The primary purpose of your air conditioning is to cool your laptop?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The primary purpose of my air conditioning is to cool everything, including my beer.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
You don't refrigerate your beer?
-
Well in Rusia... probably air will freeze it.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
In Soviet Russia, beer freezes AC?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I keep my open beer by the vent. Even when the air conditioning is off, the cool circulating air keeps it drinkable.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Should've copped those gimmick USB fridges from xoxide
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
They only had one left during the sale and I got the last one. I'd put my beer in it but I don't have anything small enough other than shot glasses that will fit in it; the fridge is narrow and is made for 12oz cans. Bottles of Heineken will definately not fit.

Well, there's a little silver lining to Asus' heat.
-
I think the problem was Asus just took the G50V's chassis & cooling system and dropped in a 260M.
IS the 260M downclocked in the G51V? -
-
I did a max overclock run in 3dmark06 (610/1000/1525 vs. 606/1000/1515) and the GPU temp maxed out at 94C. An earlier run maxed at 92C when I had it propped from the back but I wanted a fair comparison with my previous max OC tests. This yielded an overall drop of 3C under max OC in a hotter room (last I tested was in Chicago in a freezing room) and 5C if propped. CPU temps dropped 5-6C on both cores as well.
Here's a screen shot:
vs. previous run (GPU@606/1000/1515):
-
Nice score, really high OC, highest i seen on G51. Btw have you tried NVIDIA GeForce v186.82 WHQL, i have gotten over 300pts over 186.81.
-
The 186.82 didn't down clock the GPU for me at idle and for some reason the brightness controls never work with those drivers either. -
I'm planning to get a pack of 21 x 21 x 6mm ( x 8pcs) cooper blocks .. do you think that they can be "mecanized" to fit in the GPU and CPU ? since they're already cutted and form-given i think it will be easier to shrink them ...

$66 it's about u$s 17. -

And I haven't done a 3DMark run at standard resolution since I've done my mod. Let me try to dig up that old monitor.
EDIT: Here you go. My room was a freezingly-cold 70.7F -
Can you try doing that at stock asus underclocks Forge? Wanna compare temps
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
When I'm in the mood. I've already packed away the old monitor.

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
-
lolz. maybe when I do my mod, I'm hitting 81C as of right now.
-
And $66! I paid £4 for a set of 8, maybe they will be better quality :s -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Thermoplastic is fairly inert to static. A lot of the blocks in my notebook touch the case and it has far less problems than any G51.
-
I think he meant physical shocks. as in, you set it down and the it puts pressure onto your CPU.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I doubt that too. My notebooks have been through a lot of physical trauma and they are still rolling along. There would need to be a lot of force to incur damage to the components, but then again the notebook would still be damaged whether of not the blocks are there.

Grab copper and a drill, now!
