is asus going to fix the overdrive bug? It seems memory gets stuck even in low power mode when overdrive is enabled... also it is going to downclock more?

    Hey,

Just wanted to know the difference between the new vBIOS and the old one. I was reading somewhere about PCIE 1 and 2.0, and how the new vBIOS downclocks the GPU and puts it on PCIE 1? Is this true, does the original vBIOS give better performance? I'm asking because I never GSOD'd on the original and only upgraded as it said I may get GSOD later on..

before I updated the GPU was in the same PCI-e mode as before, and you can always reflash the old one if you want

Oh I know I can, I just want to know which one performs better the new or the old. I did not get GSOD on either so yeah. I was reading somewhere that the new downclocks the gpu or something so I was not really sure and wanted to ask here.

Also what does ATI overdrive do? Sorry for these noob questions, just need help :(

it downclocks it dynamically to save energy, but the performance is roughly the same

    Hello,

I think this is the right thread to post in. I updated my ATI drivers to 10.10 (I followed a guide from another poster here and used Driver Sweeper). Everything was fine until I tried to play Black Ops. I started steam and then clicked on Black ops it asked if I wanted it to auto configuire new settings I hit ok. I saw about a second of the Treyarch intro thing and then it GSOD on me (well more blueish grey with veritcal lines).

I haven't done anything to the bios if that is relevant. Do I just revert back to stock or is there another stable driver before 10.10 or something I can do to make this verison work? Thanks.

EDIT: This is wierd but as I was clicking the post button the screen flashed a blue veritcal line screen then went away. Never seen this before.

... Well sbpatel, I suggest you read the "fix" for gsod. Because you've already said that a) you have a GSOD problem, and b) You havn't fixed it.

It's BSOD, you need to flash your vBIOS.

Read the instructions carefully. It's not hard.

    @Wesbian...

I would focus on one item at a time. Your list of questions is all over the place - most having nothing to do with updating your video firmware:

The registry has nothing to do with BIOS/video firmware updates so registry cleaners aren't relevant at all.

The Catalyst driver installed also has nothing to do with BIOS/video firmware updates so isn't relevant.

Winflash and Asus EZFlash are for the system BIOS so aren't relevant to flashing your video BIOS. You'll be using ATIFlash from your bootable USB drive.

Read the instructions in the first post of this thread carefully!

If I reinstall Windows, do I need to flash BIOS and vBIOS again if I already done that? Is there a way to do a clean install w/o Win7 disk? Thanks

no, the the BIOS is not written on the HDD, reinstalling windows won't "downgrade" your BIOS.
    also it's flash not flush.
    IS there to do? what?
no you don't need to reinstall windows for the flash to be "effective" if that's what you mean

    Hello all,

My refurb G27JH just came in the mail today and i just opened the package..I'm going to be pretty busy for the next few days so its gona be hard for me to find the time to actually sit down and tinker with it.

Anyway, i have heard all about the GSOD problems..as well as flashing the BIOS and vBIOS. Well i still have a few questions.

My OS is Win7 64-bit Home. Being a refurb (and first at that) im not sure what programs/drivers are pre-installed. Upon booting up the computer, should I immediately go and update my BIOS and vBIOS THEN proceed to update drivers? I figure i do these prior to installing any games/programs.

Yet some advice me not to mess with BIOS until my laptop acts up..hmm..what do you guys say? Thanks!

    edit: so i was reading up a bit and im a bit confused about making a bootable USB drive. Ok i watched the video on youtube as well here;
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPte3QO_L4w&feature=player_embedded#!
and all the guy did was format his USB to fat32 and located his win98boot folder..he didnt do anything with the HP Usb disk tool...but in the main instructions in this topic, you have to also do some stuff with HPUSBDISK.rar...what exactly?

    Just a quick question...
I'm gonna be flashing the 211 BIOS and the 93vbios along with removing current ATI on computer and putting 10.10 on. So, my question is:

I used the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and formatted my 1GB flash drive to FAT32 with the winboot98 files. Can I put all the files on this USB drive? or should they be separate? My flash drive has:
    1) 93vBIOS (folder with atiflash.exe, BR38352.001, HPUSBDisk.rar, VFlash.bat, win98boot.rar)
    2) Remove ATI (folder with 10.10d Mobility_Win7.exe and ATI Crap Cleaner.bat in it)
    3) G73JhAS.211 (on root)
    4) a text document describing steps...

Is this ok? Can I just clean and install ATI drivers, then the vbios and then the BIOS using this flash drive? Or will problems arise? Just asking, because I bricked it before because I didn't format it correctly when installing the BIOS.

    - For ATI/AMD driver just don't care, before or after it's same.
    - Before vBios update you have to update your Bios to 211 (Motherboard Bios) as recommended by Gary. For this, the most simple for you is to use winflash BUT THE ONE DOWNLOADABLE FROM ASUS SUPPORT SITE, as the one on your DVD can cause keyboard backlight crashing. Download also the Bios 211, and flash it with winflash. Restart. Then you can do vBios update.
Some help here ! for vBios update. :)

Well, I put the 211 BIOS on a separate flash drive formatted to FAT32 with the ati stuff on it, and then the bootable flash drive is formatted to FAT32 with the vbios files on it. I don't want to use winflash since last time I used it, I bricked my desktop motherboard and had to buy a new one.

I tried using the HP utility to make a Memory Stick Pro Duo bootable. I got an error, something along the ways that it is write-protected and now it won't work at all. I tried putting it in a camera and it won't even format it.

Mine has been working for about 2 weeks now, with no crashing what so ever. It's the computer I always wanted it to be!

For those curious, this is the process that worked for me.

-Get the laptop. It crashes to GSOD, and it won't run games well. It comes with bios 211 on it.
-Contact tech support. They tell me to uninstall drivers and go to the ones on the website for the laptop.
-I change to the drivers on the site, it gives me the same issues as catalyst 10.10. So I go back to 10.10 drivers.
-I find this thread, ask ASUS tech support about it. They say go for it, and RMA if it doesn't work.

At this point, I have catalyst 10.10, bios 211, and the new video bios downloaded to be put on the graphics card. I have a bootable flash drive and the vbios flashing utility on it. I boot from the usb drive and run the flashing utility, and BAM, it now shows a new version in gpu-z. I run some games, they all seem to work well. I ran a dx11 benchmark all night to see if it would crash, and nope, next morning it was still kicking.

    Thanks!

    Hello everyone,

I got very short GSOD/BSOD screen (just for 2 sec and then screen returned to normal) when was playing to NFS Hot Pursuit on 10.11 and Gary's latest vBios. Does anyone has similar problem on other games? What would it mean for me? Shall I roll back to 10.10 version?

    Thanks!

It may not have been a GSOD per se, but a driver crash and restart. Try turning off monitoring software.

I have got a white screen with a grey vertical lines first, and then black one just for 2 sec each and after it returned back to the game. I had the same problem with an old vBios. What kind of monitoring software should I turnd off (AMD GPU clock tool?)?

I don't know about that. Since it would have to be the Asus proprietary mxm card you'd either have to step back to a used 260 or find the 460 Asus part. Also have no idea what the bios would so. At that point it may be cheaper to sell the jh and buy a jw.

I've tried to run a search and browsed for quite a while, but 8 can't find a post that tells the version of the vBios in the bios itself. I sent my G73JH for a PSOD repair, and when I get it back, I want to confirm my vBios wasn't changed by checking the version. I have Gary's standard vBios update originally posted. Maybe we could get version numbers for each of the new vBios updates?

    Thanks.

I flashed the vbios and my computer started up fine, i had 10.8 installed and ran all my games fine for as long as i wanted. my only issue was i couldn't open CCC, i didnt really care at the time until now when i bought a monitor and hooked it up to my laptop, i tried to uninstall and install the 10.11, but found out i couldnt install any display drivers from 10.7-10.11, the only driver i can install is the only VGA driver from the asus site on the G73JH download page. I have been trying to find out how to reflash the original vbios to my system and i would reinstall 10.8 display driver with a working CCC and reflash the vbios to the one released in this thread but im stuck on the first part of finding out how to reflash the original... can anyone help me out?

i ran gary's vbios update and had 10.8 driver installed at the time of the vbios flash. i wasnt able to use the CCC but didnt mind at the time cuz i had a working computer i was able to play games on with a driver that worked. i bought acer's new GD235HZ monitor and hooked up the laptop HDMI but had a inch black border around the image but couldnt fix it cuz i had no access to CCC, so i uninstalled the 10.8 set and tried installing 10.11, was unable to install the graphics driver and after trying all the drivers except the one VGA driver on the asus site for G73jh. i realized i couldnt install anything beyond what asus provided for the laptop. when i do a uninstall of the graphics driver and use driver sweeper and try to install a newer driver i get a "Installation complete (warnings occurred during installation). View Log for details." and the log contains...

No I haven't - Ugh... This notebook has been nothing but problems since I've bought it. I'll call Asus and try to get a refund...

WILL NEVER PURCHASE A ASUS PRODUCT AGAIN IN MY LIFE.... :/

I guess it's entirely to hard to buy something that works... The 1st time....
My last laptop Gateway P-7805u was amazing, plugged it in.. Worked.... Couldn't believe it because it was a gateway...

Before sending it back, check out my tutorial in my sig. Once you install vbios, ur gsod issues should disappear. Once your gsod is gone. I also have a lot of fixes in my description that will help you.

thats right, you can praise me now
