Gary Key has already stated that he will back the beta vBIOS in regards to RMA issues, and if you ever run into this issue, just email him, or ask the rep to refer to him on the issue. In fact, the repair facilities are using the same vBIOS on repair work, so yes, you are OK in using the vBIOS.

Oh, and Gary didn't want to release an Overdrive version from himself, tho it was OK for me to release one. ;) He's already tested my version in the lab and OK'd it too.

In fact, both are listed in the ROG forum for G73 series by Brian@Asus. So no, you won't lose your warranty.

Normally I run at stock. For the games I play, it's usually fine. When I desire a boost, I'll OC to 800/1000.

I'm using the vBIOS you posted Chastity; yet I cannot see the Overdrive option on my ATI Control Panel - Cat 10.11.

Though, I installed the ATI drivers before the vBIOS update - I had GSOD.

Are you using any drivers with special sauce?

You've got to a) make sure you flashed the ____OD vbios, and b) press the funny looking lock thing to unlock overdrive.

I don't think you get 2 years of ADW, just 2 years of warranty.

Ok, I finally got my PC in!

I ran HWinFO32 and found that my VBios version is:

012.017.000.004.035992 Does the .12 mean I have the latest VBIOS and do not need to flash it?

Also my "Regular BIOS" is G73Jh.206. As of now it seems like I need to update my Regular BIOS but not my Video bios?

Also, on my boot up, the "Asus Live Update" picked up quite a few updates:

Including: "Windows BIOS Flash Utility" (Would this be an auto update to my 206 bios?)

Should I go ahead and download all of these?

012.017.000.004.035992 is not the beta vBIOS that fixes the GSOD issues. I have the non-OD version and it shows as 012.020.000.032.038352

The newer WinFlash utility should prevent the problem where keyboard lights get lost when updating the system BIOS, but updating the system BIOS from the EZFlash utility built-in to the BIOS is generally safer to use anyway.

    Both; first VFLASH then UPDATEOD.

It's working now; it was my bad. I had downloaded both vBIOS, and since the vBIOS file itself has the same name for both, I got confused. Just made sure to use the ___OD one and Overdrive is there.

    Thanks whole bunches Chassy!

Ok, so I'm getting ready to attempt to get the computer ready.

I want to make sure I have all my bases lined up first :)

    I'm going to:

Update stock drivers --- (This is my main question: does this mean I should install the latest graphics card drivers first, before I flash?)

    Flash 206 BIOS to 211

    Flash VBIOS

    Then I'm done. Right?

Last question! Promise! Sorry for being trouble, but I really want to make sure I do this correctly :)

    1) Flash BIOS to 211
    2) Flash vBIOS
    3) Update drivers

    In this order please :)

Quick vBIOS question: that's stored on the graphics card itself, right? So if I do a fresh re-install of Windows, I'm assuming I don't have to re-flash the vBIOS (since it's independent of the HDDs), yes?

Update: Thanks iemie! Appreciate it. :D

    More freakiness.

I went into msconfig and checked "no gui boot." No GSOD yet and I'm running at 700/1000.

Will post again if this does not work! Wish me luck!

Also turning off ATKOSD. I read that causes GSOD issues aswell.

My keyboard lights are twitchy but haven't had a gsod in a few days. I think the deinstallation of ATKOSD did it.

If I hit fn f1 the screen turns off, then, I hit esc and it turns on again with the keyboard lights working. Wierdness. Fn f3 and f4 do not work.

I am trying to do this but am running into a small problem, my sdcards do not seem to be getting recognized by the bios so I can not boot from them. Hitting esc at the asus gives me a menu to choose between my two hard drives or the dvd player (this is an g73jh-a2) and in the bios its self that are the only drives being listed. I have one 1 gig scandisc that I use as a dos boot disk (mainly for flashing ocz ssd firmwares). I have tried two other sd cards which will not work either. I have tried formating all 3 with the hp tool with fat32 however none will show up. However I can boot from all three into my desktop without a problem. My bios is 211 and the laptop just came back from repairs. I have gone threw the settings in the bios but I am not seeing anything that would keep it from booting from a usb device (I also tried a factory default reset). Anyone know what I am missing?

Try looking for a windows 7 usb install guide - there's a section on using bootsect (bootsect /nt60 X :) to make a key bootable.

    Hello.
    I got a question.
I tried to update my vBIOS, but whenever i try to do the Flash from the DOS on the Flashdrive, it came up with A Grey Windows 7 Wallpaper and mouse pointer. But after that, my laptop just go restart itself.
So i am unable to do the flash, i made the FD DOS Bootable already with the HPUSBDisk utility

Edited. Updated the vBIOS successfully, tried to use another Flash Drive and it worked out.

But i got another question, after i updated the vBIOS, i saw that every time the GPU is not in use (in this case i took gaming as using the GPU) the clock went down 405/1000, is it suppose to be like that?

I tried this on a freshly formated disc, a disc formated with the hp tool, and on a old 16mb card that I just found. The bios simply will not detect any sdcard that I have inserted. However I did attach my usb hard drive (which I have setup as a live ubuntu boot) and I am able to boot from it either from the bios or from hitting esc at the asus logo. I am all out of ideas on this and my GSOD have been very bad since I got my laptop back.

I know that computer hardware faults do happen, but this doesn't sound like your computer is the problem. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, but it *does* sound like you're not formatting it correctly.

Since you can do it with your usb drive, it sounds like all the flash drives and cards just simply aren't set up right. Maybe you don't have an OS/boot program set up on your flash drives?

Sorry, a bump to my question on the previous page as it seems no one can see it now and i do really wonder about this problem.

"After i updated the vBIOS, i saw that every time the GPU is not in use (in this case i took gaming as using the GPU) the clock went down 405/1000, is it suppose to be like that?"

Thanks for helping in Advance :)

Well that could explain it then, I thought that I used the built in card reader, but maybe I did use my usb reader the last time I did this. I lost my reader at some point, I guess I will look a little harder for it. Thank you.

Yeah, you should read the part in the sticky that talks about how it downclocks on purpose when not in use.

And if you don't want it downclocking you can turn off PowerPlay or you could use the Radeon BIOS Editor (RBE) to make a vBIOS with custom clocks.

Best bet is to turn off powerplay. Editing the vbios using RBE to avoid downclocking is like using a magnum to kill a fly. It's quite possible (and easy, if you do it right), but the chances of causing a problem are exponentially higher.

All nice and all.. I was so sick and tired of the GSOD issue i was about to throw out the g73jh...

    But 2 questions:

    1. I flashed the vbios but now it won't let me display e.g. the 10.12 display driver.. So i gather the vbios update only works with the 10.8 driver. Given the fact that ASUS lacking support they will never release a working fix for the public i assume that will allow you to actually use the latest drivers?

    2. Where do i download the 10.8 drivers? I have searched everywhere but the links here and other places only point to the win7 util download which will simply download the latest driver (which is now at 10.12) and not the 10.8.. :(

Nope. The vbios allows the usage of all the latest AMD drivers where previously a problematic G73 would GSOD on anything but stock drivers. (9.12)

Ah ok.. Well then there must have been another reason why I couldn't install the latest 10.12 drivers.

But kudos and gratz to the posters/makers of those vBios upgrades. It is good to see that individual support members of ASUS step up and deliver something that actualy works.. Hopefully they can convince their empoyer to release one to the public.

No GSOD's anymore after 25 mins of playing DW2 CR when i used to have one within 5 mins.. Fantastic stuff :)

And I did manage to find the 10.8 drivers...

Well in my case the problem wasn't the download site.. It just gave me a failed on installing the drivers..

Reinstalled again a bit a ago and running the 10.12 with updated vBios perfectly fine now! After a few hours of dawn of war II CR with evething on max.. no problems at all... Sjeez... why dd it take so long for me to do the flash lol. Or rather: to find these forums.

It would be great if Gary and/or ASUS would make mention of this on the ASUS download site to alert other people that there is a fix.

I did all of the above steps and I can play RIFT and SC2 on max settings now, but when i play COD Black Ops Multiplayers i get the GSOD and only with multiplayer... single player works fine. This is using the vbios flash 10.12 drivers and latest bios. Any advice?

I'm having trouble making a boot disc out of my usb drive. Every time I run the HP USB Disk Tool it formats but none of the boot files are put on the drive I am selecting use DOS system files or whatever it was called. When I go to boot from the usb drive it it is a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left. I'm using a SanDisk - 2GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive and I was wondering if the type of flash drive I have has anything to do with it. I really want to be able to use the newest drivers instead of the stock ones. Thank you. Also my bios is 211 is that has anything to do with it.

Maybe good to mention in the opening post that the vBios (with OD although OD is still deactivated and cannot be used in the CP) works fine too with the latest 10.12 drivers..

So what exactly is the overdrive functon in the OD vBios upgrade if it can still not be used in the CP?

@chimplet: yes it could... I first used an older flashdrive which gave me similar results.. Then i used my 16GB cruzer which worked fine... Remember btw that hidden files are hidden bij default in explorer which is why you might not see them on the flashdrive. Obviously you also need to check te create system disk and locate the win98 files with the HP tool.

My g73 is badly pasted so the gpu temps are really high. I tried using RBE to modify the Chastity's new vBios to lower temps. It worked great for the temps -they are ok now, but games are impossible to play because the screen flickers like crazy. It also does the same thing with HellCry's vBios. Take a look at this log from GPU-Z if you like Zippyshare.com - log.txt you can see how it jumps between the 3d clocks and idle clocks for whatever reason, I think that might be the reason for the flickering because the voltage jumps also.

Now a request for Chastity - can you please make a new version of your vbios with low clocks for 2D? Or does the flickering occur everytime you lower the memclock below 1k so there is no way around it? I might try modding the vbios with RBE again and setting all the voltages to the same value but I'm not sure it'll work.

I really do not understand what issue people have with the flicker. It lasts for the briefest of moments, and doesn't do any damage. Heck, I barely even notice it anymore.

Hey, I just did this to fix my frequent GSOds and now i get a quick bluescreen when i boot into windows, then it restarts. I'm trying startup repair, and after that i'll try reflashing. I hope I dont have to RMA it. Can anyone point me to the default VBios for the 5870? I'd like to try to flash it back to stock to see if that fixes it.

Boot to safe mode and uninstall the old stock drivers you are using. Reboot, and install current ATI drivers, like 10.12 WHQL. There is no good reason to go back to the stock vBIOS.
