Wont boot into safe mode. I'll try reflashing after I try a system restore.
Okay it wont let me system restore. Anything you could do to help would be great.
EDIT: After reflashing now it keeps telling me "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I can't even get into recovery mode now.
I'm going to download the windows 7 recovery disc and try it.
Final Edit: I must've botched something so I'm going to reinstall windows, issue is I'm at my families for the holidays and my disc is at my house. it's only an hour away by car, but I don't have oneguess I'll have to wait.

The weird thing is, just after the (low clock) vbios flash i got no flicker, but it gradually got worse until the whole screen flickered. I ran 3D Mark and the first GPU test was perfect - no flickers. In the second one it started flickering only in some situations and in the 3rd one i got the whole screen flicker. After this every 3D application flickered.
However, after installing the new 10.12 drivers the flicker is gone somehow but the clocks are quite random sometimes. -
Now I have no idea why but I reinstalled and everything is fine, I've yet to try any 3d out yet though because I'm on a low speed internet connections and it takes forever to download my steam games. Borderland will be done soon though. Then I'll let you know how it went.

hi there
i'm currently attempting to flash my vbios, but i keep hitting a wall when i boot. could anyone help at all?
i have made a boot drive using the zip file on the first page (the UPDATEOD one, not the very first one), using the Win98 Boot files, but when i boot to USB drive it automatically assumes I'm the C drive and i can't change the drive letter, or list the files on the drive, or anything really. and just trying to type "UPDATEOD" or "VFLASH" tells me it doesn't recognize what i've written, or that it's bad.
i know this is a pretty fundamental step in the process to be stuck on, but i'm stumped :-s could anyone help? -
You can't change the drive letter because there aren't any other drives recognized (I assume).
Once it has loaded, type "dir" to get a directory listing. If it's your USB drive, then you can run whatever program you need to. -
THanks for the tip. I've managed to get it working, and run the BIOS update
A few questions though:
- How do I check it's properly updated?
- And I keep hearing talk of it running best on BIOS 0211 - how do i check whether or not I'm on BIOS 0211?
I apologize if these are real basic questions, I'm just not very familiar with this process, and would like to become familiar so I know how to maintain this powerhouse of a laptop I've opted for.
Also, sorry to keep pestering, but am I right in understanding that this vBIOS update plays nicely with the latest ATI driver (10.12), or is there a specific driver version I should look for that just generally performs better and with more stability? -

As of today it's near 6 months that i have a G73JH-A1 , up until yesterday i had no *SOD's ! but yesterday when i was playing Civilization V i got a BSOD ! and my system restarted . after booting my windows got a freeze. Now I have a question : Should I Update my vBIOS ?
im running on bios 0211 and ATI 10.10 . -
Regardless, it's unknown whether the BSOD has anything to do with the vBIOS (and I doubt it).
Any clues in the BSOD text? How about the event logs? -
Hi guys,
I just got my G73 yesterday. Should I go ahead and do this fix, before I try and update any graphics drivers? Or, should I just give it a shot first and see if it works. I didn't know if the issue with newer graphics drivers affected all G73 users, or just a large percentage. Thanks in advance for the help.
PS: I LOVE this machine so far!!!! -
Just G73JH users. If you have a JH, go ahead and update it.
-
It seems as if my bios are already set to 211 after doing a vFlash. When i look at the bios menu, it says G73JH 211 as my version. I shouldnt have to worry about flashing 211 then, correct?
-
correct for the BIOS, now you need to flash the vBIOS.
-
Yea, I actually flashed the vBios first, then when i did the restart, I decided to boot up to the bios menu, and saw the 211. Afterward, I updated to the most recent ATI drivers, and booted up Crysis to give everything a whirl.
O....M....G.....
Ran the game with everything maxed out, except AA. Will try turning that on later. Everything ran smooth as silk and was GORGEOUS. All the while, the G73 was quiet as a mouse. I love this machine!
I really don't even think I'll need to do a fresh windows install or anything after removing all the bloatware and doing other random maintenance today. Quite a Merry Christmas for this geek! Thanks for the help guys! -
Glad you are enjoying your investment. Out of curiosity, I take it your trackpad and keyboard are ok too?
-
Yea, you know I've read about those problems, and I haven't had any of them here thankfully. No missing keystrokes, no weird trackpad stuff. I guess I'm just lucky!
-
indeed you are . i also don't have problem with keyboard as i don't type that much fast . but touch pad do give me some time headache when i am using it while i am on my bed
-
I fixed problems with the touchpad by installing this driver New HP Touchpad Driver that Unlocks Multi-Touch on older Touchpad - www.hardwarezone.com.sg and disabling ALL the multitouch and special features. Now there is no problem whatsoever, the touchpad doesnt get stuck anymore.

Thanks for posting this fix. When I purchased the G73JH many months ago I remember reading about this issue. Then proceed to forget about it until I updated my Catalyst drivers. BTW I also needed to unlock my ROM...which again I am grateful for others having gone before me...Sometimes it pays to be slow
-
Still going strong on the stock vbios!
-
-
-
updated bios to 211, updated vbios...GSOD gone and BFBC2 load times cut in half....also disabled powerplay to keep gpu speeds the same all the time.
-
Nice. I had to delete abunch of Asus programs including ATKSOD. I still get a GSOD when I leave a game on and it goes into powersaver mode. I haven't played with making my keyboard lights work again but that's a minor issue for me. I'd rather have stability during gaming than some fancy keyboard lights.
-
Hi every one
Sorry for my english in advance :x but i have some questions.. 2 months ago i bought G73JH-BST7 from BestBuy. I have installed BFBC2 it works on full specs no crashes or any SODs... I'm wondering whether i should update vBIOS and drivers (I use both stock)? Which ati drivers i should install? which vbios version should i use (OD or no)? In addition, my GPU temps vary from 54C (idle) to 70-80C(load). Thanks in advance for replies
-
You removed apps that make the keyboard lights work...whatever floats your boat.
As for the GSOD issue, you've done the video firmware update described in the first post of this thread? Is it really a GSOD (vertical colored stripes, hard crash requiring hard reboot, etc.)? -
hiszpas was taken care of in IRC
-
I just bought an Asus G73JH-BST7 from BestBuy 2 days ago. It had a few quirks and bloatware, so I wiped the drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate clean. I checked and the bios was 211, so I went to ATI's website and installed the latest drivers for the Radeon HD 5870. I haven't had any issues as of yet and it's running like a top without any vBIOS update.
As of right now Furmark 1.8.2 has been running for 25 minutes with no crashes and the temp is holding steady at 79C. I'll run Furmark for the rest of the night and update later.
**Update**
1 hour 11 minutes and still no problems. Still holding steady at 79C. -

shaun1800,
Currently it's "after party"i have upgraded my G73, according Chastitys instructions. So far i have no problems with brickie
, temps are similar, but games (BFBC "zwei" and others) load much much faster. If something would be wrong i promise i'll be report
-
hi,
can somebody explain what exactly the vbios does? does it only change the idle frequencies?
my g73jh does not have GSOD yet. Temps in Idle are 56°C. Can i reduce them so the fan wont run in idle with the vbios? -
The vBIOS is the video card firmware that works with the BIOS and OS to provide video services, like video playback and 3D. The clock and voltages can be programmed into the vBIOS, as well as timings, etc. You can overclock and underclock with modding the vBIOS, but it's not for the feint of heart.
Those idle temps aren't terrible. You can experiment with clocks with AMD GPU Tool for HD5870. -
thanks for the answer. but what is the difference between the original and the modded bios? what does it change?
do i have an advantage (better temps?) when i flash my notebook even if it does not have the gsod problem? -
Ok so I did this update to fix the flickering and black screen issues when playing youtube videos. It has fixed that no problems however my system is now randomly restarting itself. It seems to only happen when I'm not using the system, the only time I've seen it was when the screen saver was running and around the time it would normally have gone into sleep mode it just restarted its self and gave me the option to start in safe mode. Any suggestions? Please?! I'm running 10.12 with bios 209.
-
i found another file from you chastity. In another Forum you have posted an updated bios with even lower frequencies (and voltages?).
So what alre the differences in that file? hehe... i just need some explanation what the modded files actually change compared to the original bios.
and there are rumors about an official version? -
-
Ok, thank you for your work!!
And what change fixed the actual GSOD problem? -
The stock vBIOS didn't match the specs of the 2nd revision hardware 100%, so it had to be tweaked.
-
Hey,
tried the fix_od2. but my screen flickers. so i flashed the fix_od. It decreases the temps for about 3° C! The fix_od2 decreased them for about 6-7° C!!!! That was amazing.
Can you somehow make a bios for a cool running GPU in 2D Mode? As I can see the Voltages in the fix_od are slightly higher than in the second version. Is there a way to get the lower voltages by decreasing the frequencies? Or do we need 400MHz for working in 2D Mode?
Greetings! -
you can custom the vbios with whatever voltage and clocks you want
as soon as your GPU card accepts them -
yes, i know that, but i dont know how to modify the bios.
can i just use RBE for example? -
Radeon bios editor
-
after i updated to this vios this my computer is getting random reboots..
-
-
ok, found the newer version.
but did you change anything else but the frequencies and voltages?
i think im gonna try RBE. ive got SSDs in my G73 and ill try to make it run silent in office.
but i think i need to repaste then.... -
Chastity,
what voltages did you try and what frequencies? I have tested some. im running on 275 MHz and 0.85V but i dont know, it seems that the RAM makes a lot of the heat. i just get significant lower temps when i derease the ram frequencies. but then the flicker-problem appears. the ram frequencies have to be identic in every mode otherwise it flickers while changing the mode. or did you find a solution for this problem?
greetings -
I keep the memory timings on AC the same for them, and battery mode is separate. If you look at my current fix_od2.rom, you'd see that.
-
ok, so there is no solution for the flickering. what a pity. i dont need my ram running @ 1000 mhz in 2D mode...
what is the lowest voltage you can go? im running 275mhz @ 0.8. ill try to decrease it some more... -
Actually, R&D has found that downclocking the memory doesn't save much, compared to the core.
The voltage is hardwired for 1.15v and 0.95v
