    ok, conclusion:
    1) i wont save neither power nor heat when i set the voltage lower because the only two possible voltages are 1.15 and 0.95, right?

    2) downclocking the ram does not save power, but do you know if it produces less heat when it is downclocked?

    3) the only possibility to reduce the heat is by decreasing the mhz, is that right?

...and thank you for your help!

I actually also sometimes have the issue of BSOD on idle. I've recently updated the AMD, Realtek and Touchpad drivers, so it might be one of those. I also installed Microsoft Security Essentials 2 which I also belive as a cause.

ok, seems like my system also hangs randomly when im not working on it. is it maybe the lowest 100/150 setting which causes the problem?

it could be. not every GPU is capable as another. You could fall back to my fix_od.rom for the 250 clocks

Seeing the recent posts about issues, I am a little apprehensive to try this out on my G73J. I am running 211 BIOs and have 10.12 catalyst version. This should be safe, yes? In the event that I have similar problems to those being posted here, how may I return to previous settings? I'm not super computer savvy, so I don't really care about changing clock speeds and such, I just don't want anymore GSODs.

e: also, should I use the information in the first post, or yours at the bottom of the first page? Oh, and will a normal USB flash drive work, or does it need to be a separate HDD?

then use the normal GSOD fix. that should be safe. an external HDD should also work if you make it bootable as described in the first post.
if you dislike the new bios, you can simply flash back the old ones.

    greetings

If you don't get gsods then you don't need the vbios. If u do, you do need it. You can look at my tutorial in my sig for extreme help.

The Vbios should be perfectly safe. Of course, I haven't updated my ati drivers since 10.8 since I find it to be very stable. So with newer drivers, more bugs could be discovered.

Random reboots after u installed the vbios? Thats weird. Whats ur bios version? ati driver version?

    Hey guys,

I have a G73JH and I experience also the GSOD when I update the drivers of the GPU. Is there any word from ASUS about this, I think this is an expensive laptop and Asus must take us serious as users, which it does not! I posted several technical enquiries but Asus says there are no plans for a vbios.
I use google sketchup allot with the original driver the app will not startup with new drivers from ATI it works fine but now I cannot play any games without GSOD or play video's from youtube also GSOD.

I think we all need to standup and say to Asus bring out a new vbios!

    greetings Marc

    Hi Gary,

I live in the Netherlands and I have a G73JH, is it safe to use this vbios update? Because it is still not published in the support site of Asus?

    Thx,

    Marc

@MJonkers, this vbios may never be released as an official update. Gary will almost never respond here to posts, only make announcements. I suggest you read one of the many update guides, and the first post thoroughly. There is very little risk if you follow instructions, and you may want to consider one of the modded vbioses instead.

hey guys. i nearly got it silent!! :) the second vbios with the 100mhz clock did it nearly under ubuntu.
the fan turns off and switches on after some time for a while.
what is better for the fan itself:
a permanently running fan at low speed
or a mostly switched off fan which turns on every some moments for a few seconds?

i think ill have to repaste to get the last few °C so it is silent in 2D.

Just persistant GSODs even after serious troubleshooting. Since I bought it at Best Buy they had me send it to them first which cost me 150 dollars. I thought I was on warrenty since its only like 3 mos. old for me? Whatever, its still not resolved so I want a RMA so the problem is history. All it needs is a new graphics card and it'll work. Almost 100% sure of that.

    Hey,i have a question.
When I try overclock my 5870M GPU in G73JH i can get stable only 750/1030-1050 (GPU/mem)
I dont know why ? but if i overclock to 800/1100 or 780/1080 or whatever i getting freeze and only works hard reset.
I tried using ATI RBE and change clocks in Gary vBios-i tried underclock from 250/500 to 200/400 and overclock from 700/1000 to 800/1100 - and try get up Voltage (from 1.150 to 1.2/0.95 to 0.8*underclock) and nothing work.
GPU-Z/furmark and everest read 800/1100 but 5870 still works with 700/1000.
Can send me someone maybe vBios? I want get 800/1100 in hard work and 200/300 ? on battery mode ... please Or can i know how undervoltage gpu from Windows 7 ? or overvoltage?

... Well, Considering your GPU isn't guaranteed to run at anything other than stock clocks, I think you're stuck with your weak overclocks. If it makes you feel better, some people have chips that run hotter than others (me ... D :) and others have ones that can't take an overclock.

I dont understand you ... what type of overclocker software?
I have new RBE and Gary's Bios. And now i want to up my clocks and voltage :D Amd Gpu Clock Tool and OverDrive in CCC its latest "software" right?

Ohh-i forgot-my temps are small,45*C in idle and 70-75 in stress in furmark its really cold right? then that unstable clocks arent result of temps but ... but what? i get 750/1050 and next its freeze
Can i overvoltage gpu ? i try in vbios but its result how i say-5870M work with "normal" voltages and normal clocks
Ohh and last - maybe Asus not have something like "Voltage Tweak" ? but its stupid-in MSI GX660 and older MSI GX740 is possible to overvoltage
    Im waiting for answer
    Thanks :)

You cannot adjust the voltages... they are hardwired on the card. So you are stuck with 1.15 and 0.95 settings.

I have updated the vBIOS with the one posted by Gary, but now I have a new problem that was introduced. This did not exist before - only the GsOD existed before.

Now, when I run any other OpenGL type of program such as Photoshop CS4 Extended or any type of Virtual World viewer (OpenSim, Avination, Second Life, etc), the screen will flash and the program will disappear for a split second - showing the screen or window that is open behind it.

It does not lock up, it just disappears for a slit second and then it is back.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

no, but it probably has to do with your video drivers. Maybe try a different driver version.

Well, I have updated to the latest version of the drivers - which was recommended to do with the new vBIOS. I was, however, using these new drivers before and was not getting this issue. It is only after updating the bios for the ATI card.

either way, I'm sure the vbios would have different results for all driver versions... the only other thing I can suggest is updating Photoshop and ur other programs if you haven't....

can't really help out much there.

Hello guys after reading more or less the whole 163 pages... I want to ask some questions.. so.. I have:
    Bios 211
    Ati catalyst 11.1a hotfix
VBios (I dont know) the version that is shown in GPU-Z is: 012.017.000.004.035992
    I am using windows 7 ultimate x64

Since I bought the G73JH-A1 I didnt encounter any GSOD's. But when I updated my drivers to 11.1 I have encountered only 4-5 GSOD's with DEAD SPACE 1. With other games I didnt have any problems. Now I am using 11.1a Hotfix and i am playing wolverine and i didn't encounter any GSOD's. I have runned furmark for 30minutes with no GSOD's and my max temp was 88c.

Now the question is: Should I update the vBios?? A lot of users encounter different problems.. Other users didnt encounter any problems... So i dont know what to do...! What you suggest I should do?? any suggestions will be appreciated!

@ fugitiv3: If everything is working to your liking, or at least working without any glitches, then I would suggest leaving the vBios alone. If you are having display problems then flashing the vBios may be helpful - (as long as you know what you are doing!)

Remember, updating drivers & Bios' for the sake of it may be opening up a new can of worms...

If you're on the stock display adapter firmware and you're happy with the crashes, then leave it the way it is.

Otherwise, updating the firmware is pretty much mandatory :)

It's a stability patch...Temps and FPS are not really relevant. It's those GSODs that the firmware update addresses.

If you are afraid to flash the vbios, sell it off and buy a different brand. People should not live in fear of hardware. They should man up and dominate their hardware!

@Chastity thx for urging me :p to update the vbios!! I have updated it without any issues!! the touchpad the keyboard keys are working fine...no random reboots as some people said!

    Now
    GPU-Z shows: Clock:405 Memory:1000
    VDDC: 0.950V

    In Fullscreen
    GPU-Z shows: Clock:700 Memory:1000
    VDDC: 1.150V

    On Battery
    GPU-Z shows: Clock:300 Memory:1000
    VDDC: 0.950V

So its better to leave it as it is right? because with the old vbios i always had Clock:700 Memory:1000 VDDC: 1.150V (Fullscreen and not Fullscreen) and on battery Clock:300 Memory:1000 VDDC: 0.950V

And one more question: I used to overclocked my card with AMD GPU Clock Tool 820/1100 I can still do it right? sry for the newbie questions guys but now I started to get into Overclocking things etc

Another one addtion: I have run furmark for 40 minutes with my overclocked clocks 820/1100 at 1920x1080 MSAA 8x and the max temp was 89c . I noticed that when the temp was reaching 90 the fan would start to spin faster and the temp was dropping back to 89c! Are my temps good? should i worried?

You can use SetFsb to OC your CPU .. Thats the only option you have really ..

Just google G73 Setfsb and you can read what others have to say about it ..

I have noticed something strange today.. when I am running Furmark and having GPU-Z open on top of furmark the temps show for example 88c in both programs but when i close GPU-Z and i leave furmark running the temperature of furmak changes and drops down around 10-12c any ideas???

Right so ive followed the instructions from page 1, using a Mini SD Card as my bootable drive. However, the drive does not show up in the boot menu when i start the system back up and tap ESC, any ideas why this might be happening?

You have to use a USB stick Daniel. These machines can not boot from a SD Card.
