    @Gary Key

Can you tell us what was causing the GSOD? I'm very happy to have the fix, but I'd like to know what was wrong.

    Thank you!

I also would like to know what the determined cause of the GSOD was! But thanks for the permanent fix!

I'm pretty sure voltage has been mentioned. I assume the GPU wasn't getting enough juice or something.

Glad to hear it works as intended for someone else too. Cant explain why GPU Clock Tool does that - does the same for me...
But since its unstable for some i removed it. Really wouldnt feel good if i were blamed for someone having trouble becouse of it. Those who know what theyre doing can whip up their own version in RBE anyway :).

a little question: does this vbios really require the 211 bios? because i heard the 211 bios is slightly louder than the 209 bios... and i really like how quiet the laptop is...

There seems to be a need to debunk how 211 is louder than 209.

In 211, fans kick into high gear earlier than they do in 209. So when your GPU/CPU is loaded, say in gaming, when your temp hit the high 70s and 80s, only do you hear the fans spool up.

Its no different than 209. The sound levels are the same.

For regular use, with downclocked or stock clocks, and non-loaded GPU/CPUs while doing normal office work/web browsing, the fans don't spin to max and you'll still have the awesomely quiet G73.

    Should I try this.

There are only 2 games I have played on this compuer. Starcraft 2 I have had sense it com out and it run perfect no problems at all. Never changed the bios or anything just updated some drivers a couple months ago when i bought this computer.

FFXIV open beta on the other hand is jammed pack full of problems (open beta though)

When I was first trying to install the game through there update client, it would not even run the moment i clicked it to start it crashed and said windows would not run it. I updated the catalyst to 10.8 and then it opened the installer and started running.

The odd thing about it was that while the installer was running after 3 or 4 mins the hole screen would go green, blue, black. After restarting it and trying over and over again it would stay on for 24 hours to down load it and no problems.

After I got the game installed playing the game I had a similer problem, the game looked perfect but after a few mins the screen would again turn green blue or black and crash the game, with an error message saying something happend to the display or whatever and it fixed itself even though blocks on the screen was flashing with odd lines in it. It also kept saying that it could not detect direct x.

Could the game itself be causing thoughs problems? sense its in open beta.
Or should I try what thread i about.

Been trying to figure out how to update the bios to 2011, but I honestly have no clue how to do it. I know where the file is from the asus website but there guide on how to do it is confusing.

You should flash the new vbios if you are comfortable with it, it seems to lower idle temps and give a slight performance increase as well as eliminating gsod possibilities. For whoever is wondering, many of us (incl myself) have flashed this even though we didn't have gsod's - I did it on bios 209, went just fine and so has pretty much everyone else who's tried.

At this point it's a pretty safe bet that the "official" release we'll eventually see on the asus site will match the file we have released here, checksum for checksum. I do sort of hope that the official fix has a working overdrive but meh.

did you put the windows 98 boot files in your booteable pendrive. Or better, why you don't just follow the instructions from the first post of this tread.

Uncheck "Quick Format" and for creating the DOS Startup Disk, point it to the extracted win98boot folder.

Make sure the win98boot folder ISN'T on your pendrive, but on a separate drive. Desktop for example.

Been trying to make my USB flash bootable following the steps in the guide.
But every time i restart it does not boot from it. I have been using quick formate, but unchecked that box now and waiting no it to finish formating.

Should that help or am I doing somethinig wrong?

In the UBUSB thing. I select fat 32 then I check create dos and I find that file.

Then I start it and it said it worked, when I right click and go into prop under file system i says fat 32 not sure if that means anything.

would a video tutorial be useful on how to flash your bios and vbios? I can make one... but I might have to just provide instructions when you are in the bios as I can't record the screen while I'm in bios. I do have a crappy camera but not sure how well it will look....

I updated to 211 BIOS and 10.8 Catalyst driver. I took the archive and extracted the HP/Win98/vBIOS files. I selected Fat32, pointed to the directory with the files from the win98 archive. It didn't copy anything over other than the command.com and sys.com files (2 main needed to boot DOS).

However, I created a new boot option mikes_usb and saved it, set it to the USB device from BIOS but all I get is a blinking cursor at the top left of my screen. So I have been unable to flash vBIOS. Any ideas? I only had 2 boot options prior to making the new entry (HDD/DVD).

Instead of going into bios click esc after restarting and it will bring up the boot menu..select your flash drive and boot it up and then type VFlash and then let the Gsod's fade away.

Thanks dude! I tried F12/F2 keys, setting things in BIOS but it wouldn't boot from it. No idea why it wouldn't. Using the ESC key did the trick! Thanks.

Oh, something strange happened before I flashed. I got a Blue SOD (blue vs gray). I wasn't able to check temps or anything. I was just reading the forum earlier when that happened. Hopefully this vBIOS, new BIOS and ATI 10.8 drivers will alleviate all of everyones issues.

    hey guys,

I just took the plunge and upgraded my G73 (stock everything 209 bios which only had one GSOD on stock randomly while trying to play videos since may when I got it.) to bios version 211.I downloaded and made my usb bootable drive and got Gary's files in it ready to go. Downloaded and installed driver sweeper and ready to go. Also got the 10.8 catalyst downloaded. Just wanted to see if I can backup the original vbios? How can I save a backup file of the original vbios before the updating?

    thanks,

    v

Thanks gary and chastity for the awesome fixes.

Im on 211, 10.8 and i feel like its working wonders.

Only problem for me, not sure if its just me, but when in 405/1000 mode, it seems that when i drag window icons (eg: messenger chats, etc) its not smooth. is this due to the new 405/1000 setting?

Boot to the USB drive. Use the following command at the command prompt:

    atiflash -s 0 filename.ext

where "filename.ext" is a file name you choose to save the vBIOS to.

hmm... I just noticed something. I opened up my amd gpu clock tool and my speeds are reading as 405/1000. Why? I even hit restore defaults and it won't go back to 700/1000. What is the issue here? Did installing the vbios cause this? Cause It was fine a few days ago last time I checked.

edit - when I played a 1080p video, I hit "get clock info" and it read as 700/1000 now. When I close it, it goes back down to 405/1000. Was this part of what the new vbios does for the fix?

hello guys, did anyone else notice in the StarCraft 2 Video settings it suggest what settings " Your machine " should be set to, and it suggest me to have alot of settings on low and overall settings on " Medium " ...... hmm that seems to be wrong to me, considering the required specs for SC 2 are not that demanding,

can anyone else who has SC2 please see if it says the same thing for you ? also i noticed with the new Vbios and 10.8 drivers the game just does not run as smooth, im not sure if this is due to the new Vbios and/or the 10.8 drivers does anyone notice this or know whats going on ?

it ran way smoother on 10.6 driver and i had stock Vbios

I'll test this out myself. If its true, then my only guess is they set it up to where it doesn't gsod with the current mem speed of the gpu.

well i tried 800/1100 worked for a while then got one ( i used this clock fine before i updated Vbios and drivers ) also tried 850/1,120 but i think that was just to high. i really wanted to be able to overclock a bit to get better performance as i will be playing FF 14 as soon as it comes out. although i am using the AMD clock tool, i wonder if i get chassity version to enable OverDrive will this possibly help ? im using gary version of Vbios

ZING! Success :) Just played Borderlands and the GPU still cooked up to 87*C but no GSOD this time. It normally died about 2-3 mins into it as soon as it hit 80-82*C but it ramped up to 87*C and stayed completely stable for about 40 mins while I was playing. I still plan on repasting the GPU as these temps really suck, but thanks for all the hard work and now I can play WOOT!

Funny thing happened to me when i was on Chastity OD ROM, everything was fine until when i tried OC everything went haywire, my display would flicker at random interval and Windows 7 freezes after a while (even while browsing), i've even applied the Windows 7 Anti-Freeze patch from Xellon ( Fix Windows 7 Randomly Freezes and Stops Responding - KezNews.com ) but it still freezes on me.

No matter if i clocked it back to stock the same symptom still remains, so i've got no choice but to remove Catalyst 10.8 and install the stock drivers.

Stock drivers really sucked IMO, it's like 10 FPS difference in Starcraft II, so in the end i decided to give the new ROM here another try, only this time i flashed it with Gary's ROM without OD, and did a Catalyst 10.8 installation over stock, so far so good, no flickers no freezes no GSOD, it seems that some bugged trigger went wrong during overdrive.

    Great results so far!
I pwned Lost Planet for hours and no GSOD!
That game gave me SODs on each attempt before this update.

    I`m using the "standart" config:
ccc 10.8, bios 211, Garys vBios, default clocks and PowerPlay.

A video guide to any kind of update like this is always a suberb idea. Although most of us have some degree of technical know-how, I for one still like to watch the process through first before doing it.

I'd love you to create one. Thanks!!!!

How did you go about doing this? I've been trying, with no success.
Edit: A full refund would also solve my GSOD problems. And as a non-official fix, I'd rather not void my warranty and end up with a $1800 brick.

Why don't you just flash your VGA with the new vBIOS? No more GSOD ...
