The 750m is a GTX 660m, just rebranded. Also the Y500 doesn't have Optimus even for the single 750m.

Yes as a SLI setup is incompatible with an optimus setup unless you mux it.

guys, updates from the usb 3.0

    I just tried it on windows 8 and got 40 read 40 write ... it's strange -__-

tried installing asmedia drivers / intel drivers/ fresco/ anything i could install. Fresco wouldn't finish installing (i guess it didn't find compatatible hardware) asmedia did but nothing shows up. Intel usb 3.0 drivers are all there. However on windows 8 the usb message "if you connect this to a superspeed port" does not show up. Whatever .. i give up on trying to sovle this one.. wasted too much time searching for drivers and solutions. and it seems funny to me that so many people posted problems for usb 3.0 and no one really solved it yet.. or atleast their solutions are not universal.

G46 release 1st week of December 2012 Best Buy. Asus promises release of G46 displays with 900p around 1st quarter Jan-March. We are now 2nd Quarter in the brink of Haswell release and still no other variations of G46.

    I rest my case.

Does anyone have a modded vbios for the 660m (for our laptops) so I can get past the +135 limitation with the latest nvidia drivers?

Just been boosting by 135 default with nvidia inspector and the .bat files dont seem to work now..

    Thanks! :D

You need a modified system bios since it's integrated into that.

I just picked up one of these babies the other day. I am surprised at the specs they were able to put into it. An i5 w/ GTX 660M? Let alone the i7 version they have coming/ has come. (See signature for my model and specs). The performance is really good. Only time will tell for longevity. I am actually using it as I type this. I thought I would get on here though and see if anyone has any suggestions for this system. (Nvidia Profiles Etc?) I managed to update to the latest Nvidia Drivers.

Oh now that I think about it. I do have an issue: When I bought the machine, the sound drivers weren't installed and I need to install those. (VIA chip in mine.) Also I have an unknown device in my device manager, it is reporting itself as "USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller" Any idea on what this is? Thanks for all the help.

    Hi All,

As i'm not to familiar with Asus products, my friend just purchased one of these little beasts and he totally wants to remove the win 8 on the machine and install win 7, the bios seems very limited can someone pls explain how to install win 7 on the g46vw using the same original hard drive that came with the laptop, as his external USB dvd burner drive is not being picked up by the bios or at boot screen.

please note his only using the g46vw currently via internal battery as a replacement AC power adaptor is on its way.

    thanks

Thanks, but I've installed everything, also, that USB 3.0 driver is for Windows 7 only. I have Windows 8. I tried downloading and running anyhow and it told me it was the wrong version. Any other ideas?

In order to install win 7 you have to disable Secure boot and enable launch CSM in BIOS.

The USB 3.0 is from intel you can go there and select the one for your version of windows.

Try the latest WiDi drivers from Intel:

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22016&ProdId=3227&lang=eng

The USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller should be recognized just fine if you have the chipset, display, and other Intel drivers installed.

I've been experiencing major issues with my machine.

Most startup programs don't boot, the sound does not work, and the components (CPU, memory etc.) are not detected. I cannot open control panel; it freezes and I am forced to do a hard shut down via power button.

I have been trying to boot into safe mode but I forget which F key to press. I have tried F5, F6, F12 and F8, none of which have worked.

I don't think that's any hardware issue, all sounds like signs of virus.

if the machine boots up, doesn't overheat, or display any errors the chance of having hardware malfunction is rare because it simply wouldn't start the computer in the first place. If you can't even open control panel i'm pretty sure it's a virus.

Ok somthing is off with my machine now too.. My right usb port no longer recognizes things.. (other 2 ports are fine) it will power them briefly but then nothing at all.. ive tried multiple things.

    any ideas?

This is at school if this happens at home too then ill keep this post up but it was fine last night.. and ive rebooted.

and now my Nexus 4 only shows up as charging with that usb port only.

EDIT: I restarted on battery and it works again but im guessing if i plug it in with this outlet it will do that again.. ive never realized this happening before so thats why i was freaked out..

But WHY does it do this... No laptop ive had before ever did this. Why is ours so sensitive to certain power outlets??! (and i just unchecked all the "allow this computer to turn off this device to save power" for all my usb hubs)

So excited. The best buy in the next town over has them for only 899.99$! I went over, checked them out and was blown away. Only real issues I have is the screen. 720 is pretty low, but the screen is pretty small, so its not too bad. The only other thing is the power brick... Its the same size as the g75vx. What is that!?!?! I know they want to save money, but engineering a smaller sized PB would have been a great idea imo. Guessing that will probably be one of the things thats going to be for the next generation of of the g40 series.

Love the stout and solid build quality, the light up logo on the back, the keyboard, and the sound was surprisingly good. Especially compared to be current dinosaur age dell laptop that sounds like audio is being ported between tin cans by a string.
Will probably be picking up a swiss gear laptop bag to hold it.

Greetings! I need a little guidance from the experts in this thread, if you would be so kind.

I have already installed a mSATA SSD as the boot drive and stored a few applications on it.

I wish to replace the 750 GB HD with a 1TB Hybrid SSHD but have had a devil of a time getting it recognized. Should I "clone" the stock 750 GB drive onto the new SSHD and then try to install it? If so, which program do you recommend? Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!

Why would they do 1.5gbps sata only to the 2.5 drive? Buying a Samsung 840 Pro for this laptop was a total waste of money.

Yes they would note waste one of the SATA III ports since the motherboard is not being used in a larger model.

Well, just checking in here, sorry been such a stranger, I've been swamped with work... so far the little g46 is running like a champ upgrades and all. Travels with me quite a bit for work, battery life has been completely fantastic doing mobile office work, never had a machine that will run this long. Performance is still running great as well, no issues to report, gaming daily etc... one happy camper! Now knowing my luck this will jinx the whole thing but I try and pass along the good not only the bad ha

Curious about the screen upgrade, that's about the only thing I haven't messed with yet ha... I'm totally happy with the 768 screen res, but curious if it's actually a better looking panel. edit: curiousity won out and screen has been ordered, will report back next week

Just picked up this unit less then 2 weeks ago. Very impressed so far with the build quality. Cooling is amazing and I find it very quiet. I got the Canadian model G46VW-DH51. Some things to point out to help others:

    Screen 1600*900 Resolution
Wireless card is a Broadcom 802.11ac with Bluetooth 4.0 (cant remember model)
HDD was a Seagate 750GB XT model

The screen I find to be awesome. Brightness and colors seem great in comparison to my old MSI 14" with 1366*768 res. Viewing angles also are a lot better. I remember reading 140* viewing angles on the marketing info. Battery life is great too. Have currently used the laptop for roughly 4h periods at a time while surfing and there is still plenty of battery life remaining. Upgraded the HDD to a Samsung 830 SSD and cloned over Win 8. Ordered a Crucial M500 120GB mSata and am awaiting for it to arrive.

Question for those who have installed a regular mSata drive, I have read everywhere I could and have seen comments of just securing the drive, to removing some tab on the bottom cover. Does this tab HAVE to be removed or can the drive be installed like normal and secured via double sided tape/electrical tape?

    Thanks

If you mean to install it where the mini mSata goes then no, but the keyboard may not fully snap back into place and be lifted off the case above the card reader. It's a VERY tight fit. Something may break. I removed the upper right battery case screw and used a very sharp knife to cut off the battery case tab. The mSata will then be nicley (but tightly) held by the screw mounting hole. Use a small piece of electrical tape to hold the mSata in place against the mini mSata mounting stud when re-installing the motherboard. Unfortunately this mounting stud is unusable for a regular mSata.

I have the same model as you. I'm running a Crucial M4 mSata 256GB and using the stock Seagate 750GB XT as storage. I also have installed a i7-3840QM with 16GB Corsair Vengence Ram. Runs just awesome!! Very quick with everything. And I agree that the 1600x900 screen is great. Bright colors..more so than I was expecting with an anti-glare screen.

I fitted a M4 256 mSATA, all l did was fit a piece of double sided sticky tape to the metal post and fitted the card, no other mod was done, and it was a little tight refitting but the keyboard sits fine and there is no caps or distortion of the chassis apparent :), all l have to do now is get my hands on a 1600*900 30 pin panel here in the UK :)

On mine I did remove the tab from the chassis near the battery as it was causing the mother board to flex ever so slightly when I fitted everything back together after installing the mSATA SDD... Once removed everything set perfectly flush and didn't rub. Probably not absolutely needed as others have done with out and just let the motherboard flex a fuzz, but it's a simple cut to make with either a Dremel or even a utility knife. Also, as Meaker said, make sure you isolate the metal mounting peg on motherboard from mSATA drive to prevent a possible short. Once covered in tape however it does make a perfect support peg.

As for screen, enjoying the 900p panel from HID. I'm sure there are other versions out there that will work as well, but it's actually a decent panel and works guaranteed. See my other posts for a bit more info in the screen upgrade thread in this forum.

So I ran HWiNFO64 and could not get any info on the panel, but I did see through device manager that it is a AUO303E if that's any help.

For the audio mine seems like it makes a low pop sound every now and then but it sounds a lot like the click coming from the touchpad buttons so I am not 100% sure.

As for the mSATA I normally wouldn't mind breaking out my dremel but I have 2 year coverage and would rather not physically alter anything if I don't have to so here is hoping. Drive should arrive on Friday so I will post back once I have it installed.

Does anyone know the exact torx size for the screws on the bottom? The ones closer to the bottom are not T10. T9 maybe?

    Thanks

I remember you mentioning the audio issue back when these first came out, but I haven't noticed or had the clicking/popping. No complaints or issues thus far with audio over the past 5 months through a couple of OS's and drivers.
