The first G46 I owned had popping sounds from the speakers, but my current G46 does not emit that noise. Thanks for the info about the display.

Why the 3612qm? The faster integrated graphics is of no benefit.

Never knew the 3612QM existed, I have the 3630QM in mine. I think it's totally worth it to get the i7 processors since they offer great performance. I run emulators and they are more CPU dependent when compared to GPU. I'm able to run windwaker on dolphin and it runs without any problems

Since the cooling is first class as well, it would make sense to go with the i7. Still - very little or no benefit in normal dx10/11 type games over the i5.

(You demonstrably get better framerate in "cpu-bound" games when running one core at higher frequency, compared to more cores at slightly lower frequency. I.e., the i5 is marginally worse in tests because of lower peak processor speed, not because of fewer cores. Could be exceptions will turn up, but not extremely likely that will happen while the i7/i5 is still on the market..)

I just installed windows 7 on my G46vw, so far so good.
Just one problem (?) ASUS USB charger plus utility icon is grayed out in system tray even when I connect my iPhone to the charging port........in windows 8 icon changes color from gray to orange/red when you connect phone. And I think now phone is charging slowly because of that.....or maybe just my imagination :)
Any experience on this? Maybe ideas? ))

I was more speaking to getting a 3610qm or 3630qm rather than a model with a faster integrated graphics speed.

I take you downloaded a windows 7 version of the utility? If not just head to Asus website and try one of the legacy laptops running Win 7 with this feature, to see if that helps, failing that try another port?

How do you guys maintain your battery life? Do you disconnect the battery ever? Mine used to be at a constant 6 hours, but now it only lasts 2.

I always keep the battery plugged in.

There actually is, option to charge from dedicated charging port even after sleep or shut down. And it's "enabled".
And no problem here, I mean devices are charging when lid is closed.

p.s. Yeah, but problem persists even with connected charger.

    Thanks anyways ))

i have no idea that 7% wear would ruin a battery, nor they would cover that even if it's under warranty, that's interesting.. and the battery is removable but that requires a complete disassemble and after the horror stories of recent asus customer service I don't think they will do anything about your 7% battery wear that's completely normal -_-

installed latest intel drivers for HD4000.
Looks like they have some problem with dedicated video (nvidia GTX660M in our case).
During install had a dwm.exe (desktop windows manager) crash and now after every restart it crashes......internet explorer 10 crashes after opening every time also.

Found this thread, where many with second cards (AMD or NVIDIA) experiencing exact same issues, just be aware and if you have some updated info please share :)

    Windows* 7/8 Driver (32 & 64 bit) - Version 3071 - Intel® HD GFX 4000/2500

    UPDATE:
after rolling back to old drivers everything works as intended

hmm, battery life is fantastic with mine, are you guys sure the 660m is switching off and something isn't keeping it active in the background (Steam and a random Office App did this with mine until I figured it out)? I get 6+ hours and use the battery quite often, and otherwise just plugged in on my desk. Not sure what wear is, but I'm sure it's 7% or more... out of the box I was already at 3-5% which as posted above doesn't really mean much.

Activate the little usage indicator in the nv driver control panel to check :) it can set the oddest things like steam and origin to activate it.

Battery on mine won't charge to 100% only to 99 and it's the first time I charge it plus it had 3 little scratches on the top of the lid not a big deal just not cool on a new system, I am wondering about the battery.

Mine while plugged in will fluctuate between ~99-95%, this is on purpose to protect the battery and keep it conditioned. While doing so it will say something like "plugged in, not charging" when hovering over the icon. It is designed to be this way, as it only charges the battery when needed. This way you can leave the charger hooked up as often as you like and run off AC without having to even think about battery care or unhooking the battery like we use to do years ago.

My battery charge is full at 100% while plugged in.

Maybe this is why it only lasts 2 hours?

Mine will hit 100% sometimes too, especially if i charge it while turned off, but I bet when it does if you look it will say "plugged in, not charging". I doubt over charging is your problem, especially considering how new the machine is.

I got to think your 2 hour problem is related to Optimus and the Nvidia gpu is staying powered.

Got the Crucial M500 mSATA installed after an initial bad one and longer delay then expected for it to arrive. The drive is nice and quick, and I highly recommend it. Read speeds seem almost identical to my Samsung 830 in the main bay and I can confirm in case anyone is wondering that the mSATA port is SATA 3. I personally did not have to modify anything in the chassis for it to fit properly. I made sure the mounting standoff was covered as well for extra insurance one of the battery mount screws, and I used some double sided tape to hold the drive in place.

If you have any monitoring programs in the background running like Afterburner, GPU-Z, AIDA64 etc to monitor temps or gpu activity it will put the nvidia card as active. I would suggest changing your power options to say High Performance, hit apply, then go back and change the setting to Balanced and apply.Make sure the "On Battery" brightness setting is roughly at 50%.(I personally do not like the Asus Power4Gear program and do not recommend it for the battery life difference it offers). Reinstall the Asus drivers for Intel followed by the updated Nvidia drivers and see if that helps your battery life.

Only thing I can think of is that something is running at full performance. Could be your CPU, your GPU, brightness etc.

MSI Afterburner,Hwinfo,GPU-Z were the ones keeping my primary GPU active instead of the intel.

I used to keep 2 of those running at start up but with optimus i chose not to because if i unplugged and forgot to shut them down my battery went bye bye in a hurry.

Thanks nice to see mine is not the only one that get's the 99% and not 100% I do get good battery life just as a new laptop I do not what to have a "bad" battery as it did come with 3 litter scratches on the lid top and one small on the fn key no big deal just conserning a bit as for the rest it's perfect screen black is very good and bright. I am running win7 on it and it's a fast little machine can't whait to get my msata next month.

Waiting months is never my style sadly lol. At this resolution it will be a solid performer for quite sometime plus after seeing the so called Nvidia refreshes there is nothing to get excited about other then cosmetic changes on the newer models as the CPUs are already so insanely fast we sure are not bottlenecked on that end and its all about the GPUs still which do not seem to be making the big jump this year like they did last.

Of course NEXT year will be ..... And around we go year after year.

It's a fairly simple swap in upgrade (128bit, similar package size) so if they release a haswell update it would likely contain it.

There is a video on YouTube from HID evolution taking it apart. Probably a half hour for a first timer being careful.

I have pulled the glass off multiple Alienware machines put in matte screens and made my own custom bezels, now that is some serious work lol.

This is a walk in the park though.
