This laptop is being sold in central-european countries already.

    Sports a 660m 2GB gDDR5, 3630QM, 120GB SSD + 750GB SATA2 HDD (this baby lacks a slot for an optical drive) 3x USB 3.0, hdmi etc.

I really hope that the SSD is not mSATA based... 1080p screen is not likely to happen. It also comes with Win 8 and Optimus (isn't this just a driver issue on the big brothers?)

An Asus rep on the ROG forums posted that he's in the middle of writing up a post about it. My guess is more news will be available today or tomorrow.

Great, no info on resolution, no info on weight to see if it can compete with m14x r2. If this one has 900p screen and less than 6.5lbs then it would be better but i have a hunch it would be close to 7lb and only 1366x768 screen which sucks.

Several European retailers have already begun to take preorders for the G46 and have posted the tech specs on their sites. They have it listed at just a hair over 5.5lbs, with the same reported 1366 x 768 resolution, however there was confirmation by an ASUS rep that there would be an option for a panel upgrade at a later date.

Depends what panels are available. Apple are in a league of their own sometimes with regards to parts channel availability. Currently the G46 only has a 13x7 panel sorry, but it will get a bigger upgrade at a later date.

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised he would reveal that. No sense in buying the model that's coming out soon. I'll just wait until the upgraded one comes out. Whenever that is...

I totally agree, although I wouldn't put it past a reseller like Xoticpc to offer custom built G46 chassis with upgraded panel options fairly soon after official release.

But say I wanted to buy this ASAP.. Panel upgrade can be swapped correct? Its all the same internals.. why would they switch motherboards for a display upgrade.. Not cost effective so.. in a sense you can buy this now and swap the display out of the one thats coming.

Getting your hands on it tho.. thats another story.. also 30 day return period.

I'm also curious about this laptop. I'm right at that point where I'm strongly considering a new laptop, and 14 inch Asus laptops have been in my past. So projections (or better yet, official word) on price?

If this thing is struck with 768p, I see no reason why hp dv4t or lenovo y480 wont come on top.(add in the price and the size) Do this setup really need that much cooling ?

Good thing that Asus made it Optimus Enabled at last. The current resolution is a deal breaker although. How about the Raid 0 capability and performance given the non-identical type of storages? I think the first batch of this new G-series would be more likely for presentation and not for demo yet as they gave word on better resolution and thunderbird capability on later releases. I bet a lot would choose to wait to get those.

Given its smaller, slender size there’s no room for an optical drive, but since most games are available direct through Steam, Origin or your favorite digital distribution service these days it’s likely not missed by most people, and you can supplement any optical Blu-ray requirement via a USB drive, like the ASUS SBC-06D2X-U. ???? This sucks for me i think it MAY be another deal breaker LOL!

M14x r2 is not better when the real G46 comes out

    G46 has a GTX 660m which is 15% faster than the ddr5 gt 650m
G46 will have a higher resolution at a later date if you are patient
G46 will also have thunderbolt at a later date
G46 will have the same dual cooling fan set up for whisper quiet vs the single fan of the m14x for both gpu/cpu
    G46 is 5.5lbs and m14x is 6.5lbs

So where do we think the price will fall for the basic model?

The G55VW-DH-71, the post-windows 8 version of the G55 is up for 1259. The processor there is a little better, and potentially much so given the options on the G46. Some of the other specs are similar, with a few more bells and whistles given the extra size, and the clear Thunderbolt port, which is only mentioned as coming later on the G46. They've also killed off the optical drive, so that ought to shave a bit more. Competitor models are running around 1000. Does the basic most simple model get below 1000? That might be in my price range for the specs. I'm quite interested in the balance between power and cost, so the U47 is also on my radar, but if I can get a little better hardware for just a touch more, I'm game for that. I'm kinda trying to weigh this now, as the rebate that makes the U47 attractive expires at the end of the month. If I had an anticipated cost to go along with projected model stats, that might help a lot in deciding how to weigh my options.

HP and lenovo 14" with i7 quad + 650m asking for 750-800ish with coupon, they are the competitor now before the "upgrade coming soon".

Just a few more tidbits for those who haven't been following this on the official ROG forums:

    What about Subwoofer ?
One more - do you have any idea about the mSATA inside what model is it?
    10x in advance

Higher res screens - can't say whether before December as things could be delayed.
I've not seen a 3D screen planned, but HDMI and DP ports are 3D ready.
No subwoofer - 2.0 only, but the speaker hardware: amp, bass chamber, speaker cones, are all the same size as G75.
The mSATA SSD could change so the model isn't stated sorry. It's SATA 6Gbps, that's all I know.

Please note it's US only for now, with other regions potentially coming later.

Still no word on pricing or availability...

I think it would be natural if the hi-res version is released with one of the new nVIDIA cards from the MX line to have more power for the higher resolution. I could be wrong though. ASUS is not known for pushing the most powerful cards in the standard setups you can choose from. I really hope they do try to implement a GTX 675MX or 680MX. That would be awesome.

I am fully aware of this, but the inclusion of newer and more potent GPUs as options would make it capable of running demanding games better and sweeten the deal :)

    @ Dafengar
ASUS has some of the best cooling solutions on laptops, so I would like to see a test before writing this off. Remember that there's no optical drive in the G46, which may make up for the smaller chassis.

Looks interesting, better than the M14X in my opinion but slightly larger, wish the screen res was better but as long as it's a good quality screen I can look past the low screen res ( sort of used to it to tell you the truth my last 2 laptops had ) Are the going to still be making the 15.6" model? It sort of doesn't make sense have both since they are almost close to the same size, anyway we need a price and release date for this powerhouse quick.

The palm rest area of the notebook is beveled off to less than an inch, not really enough space to have PCB and a heatsink there. The ideal location for the heatsink is the back to vent out the hot air for better thermal casing performance and reducing fan noise. Judging from the screenshot of the back of this unit, it is evident ASUS is going to utilize these two vent areas, leaving the space from the keyboard to palm rest exclusively for the main board. Sticking a heatsink where an optical drive would be means a heavier notebook with more fan noise.

I'm going to have to agree with Defengar here, neither the GTX 675MX/680MX would work for a notebook this size. Look at the specifications of both cards; the GTX 675MX is practically a down clocked desktop GTX 660, and even with the down clock, is going to draw 90-100 watts (33% increased power consumption). The GTX 680MX will draw 120 watts minimum (80% increased power consumption over the GTX 660M). Either one will cause heat soak to the cooling system within minutes of load; these GPUs are for large 17" notebooks or 15" notebooks with really loud fans.

I'm interested in the price as well. With this coming out, they might as well do away with the G5x series. Disc-based media isn't as common as it used to be and I'm sure the lack of an optical drive won't be missed. Or maybe they can ship it with (or at least offer) a USB disc drive like they do with the 15" Zenbook. The little blurb that ASUS posted about this show that higher res screens will be available at a later date. They also seem to be activating Optimus this time around which is also welcome.

Does the G46VW use a 2-prong power adapter or a 3-prong(includes grounding) ? Does it use the same power adapter as the G55 ? or does it have a slimmer version?

its a question about size, off course the 680mx wouldnt go there, the needed tdp should be much higher than whats available currently for this crop of notebooks. And give the large size of the g46 I dont see the problem here. Its basically a 15'' with a 14'' screen, with the added extremely large back as well

Yes, I might have considered it more strongly if I had firm prices to go along with the specs, but as it stands now, I've decided upon another option. It will be a good laptop, nonetheless, but just coming at bad timing for me to get one. Maybe I'll revisit the line in three years after technology and life have rolled along.
