The power supply's rated power is lower than what the laptop can consume at max load, so the laptop pulls the remaining power from the battery. I assume you could use a compatible higher rated power supply but it would be significantly heavier.
I would be interested to learn what happens to the laptop's gaming performance when the battery is fully drained, limiting the power it can use.

I'm not sure if you used any Optimus enabled laptop, when any app configured for dGPU usage is not running you can't even read basic dGPU parameters such as dGPU temp, its not powered on.
MUX iGPU mode = Optimus battery life if every app is set to Integrated Graphics.
Having an option to choose what GPU is used on the fly > Having to restart to change GPUs.
Do you know how much the integrated Intel GPU @ ~200MHz consumes? Less than 1W probably, that won't even raise the temperature by 2C let alone 10C you are claiming.hmscott likes this. -
Sorry for the double post but I want it in a separate post.
Just got the GL702-DB71 couple of days ago.
I installed my Toshiba XG3 500GB PCIe M.2 SSD and it works, I cloned the OS to the SSD using Reflect and everything is working good so far.
I overclocked the display to 96Hz successfully, ran the blur test and its working perfectly with no frame skipping, I didn't try for higher refresh rates.
The color accuracy seems good out of the box, I test the stock settings later and calibrate the display and report back.
I ran Company of Heroes 2 and I'm very disappointed at ASUS, the GPU boost to ~1885MHz initially until the temps rise to upper 80's, the fan ramps up from ~2500rpm to ~3700rpm and thats where the laptop is happy to let the GPU throttle down to ~1500MHz rather than increasing the fans further.
I came from a Gigabyte P37X v5, its thinner and lighter and has a higher TDP GPU (980M) yet it can keep the GPU at about 80C with no throttling.
ASUS really need a BIOS update to correct this or at least gives us an app that can let us control the fan just like what Gigabyte do.
I will test other games later today. -
Asking the people who has the GL502VS and the battery issue.
I'm assuming that the battery only drains by 5%? per hour when gaming or under heavy loads?
So when doing internet browser stuff or general non-gaming or even indie level games or playing local videos the battery charges as per normal and doesn't go down?
Also is it possible to somehow undervolt/underclock the gpu to maybe prevent this battery charge issue? I know the 1070 is a bit overkill for current 1080p 60hz gaming so could stand to underclock a bit.hmscott likes this. -
If you set them all to iGPU on battery, if that's possible, an application can still override this setting and run on dGPU. And, individual application settings set by Nvidia GFE will set games to dGPU by default.
The same tests, the same CPU's, new GPU's - all of a sudden the same CPU work these guys were doing suddenly was running 10c higher and thermal throttling their CPU's, due to the iGPU being enabled and running.
I spent many hours helping dozens of people directly detune their CPU's, applications, and system processes to get through batch job runs for rendering and other high CPU load tasks.
It's proven solid info, from every G750xx Optimus saddled owner, even skeptics like you that doubted it, then they ran the tests, and guess what - thermal throttling and high CPU temps, whereas the same CPU on a non-Optimus laptop ran 10c cooler, and didn't thermal throttle. -
And everyone knows that GFE is optional and you don't have to install it, and even if you install it you can skip searching for games on the system, and you can skip using NVIDIA recommended settings for those games.
Any laptop manufacturer would love the idea of their powerful gaming laptop can run up to 5 hours on battery instead of half of that while keeping all gaming features intact. Common sense, no?
Both have the same CPU so its comparable? What logic is that !!
Cooling config could be different.
Other Hardware can be different.
Fan curve can be different.
I can go on and on.
When you want to compare two things you have to eliminate all variables except what you are testing, thats Comparison 101.
I will not even waste my time writing why a 10C increase on a cooling system that can handle at least 150W with a delta temperature of <60C is even laughable.
There is a direct relation between power consumption, CPU temperature and battery life on the same laptop with a fixed fan speed.hmscott likes this. -
Optimus has been around a very long time and hasn't changed much, that's when I gave up on it, when it clearly wasn't going to get fixed, and so many people were suffering with it - including me - spending lots of time helping people live with it.
And, I know you don't need to use GFE, I don't, but I am pointing out little detail after little detail you need to be aware of as an Optimus laptop owner to make sure it's either set correctly, disabled, or uninstalled - and to remember to check it often in case some new install changed something back to default or another setting.
That rat-hole just keeps getting deeper and more convoluted until you realize your messing with things far more than you should be to get Optimus to do as expected - and you build a growing list of what you can't do.
Optimus takes away so much dGPU functionality that you will eventually realize the mistake you made, and when you sell it you will never get another Optimus high end laptop again.
You couldn't hope for a better controlled comparison
The surprise and shock was palatable through the screen, these people were livid in their anger for not getting the CPU performance and cooling of their previous models.
The new laptops only changed the GPU and Asus enabled the iGPU and Optimus. The previous models were dGPU only, and very popular, Asus lost a lot of customers by enabling the iGPU adding Optimus.
In the next generation G750/G751 from Asus only the lowest end GPU model had Optimus. Asus learned their lesson about using Optimus, never use it in a high end GPU laptop. The owners hated Optimus and complained about it until Asus removed it in the next model.
Don't ever get Optimus, get a MUX switch, so you have pure dGPU and pure iGPU operation.
It's that simpleLast edited: Oct 11, 2016 -

The MUX is the most effective, and also the most seamless you can get right now, and requires a reboot.
Until you experience the problems Optimus seems the most seemless, but it's got too many gotchas with ongoing aggravation as you want to use previously unexplored features and potential.
Some people run fine at first, and don't start discovering the gotchas until after the return period, and then they are stuck.
Not a happy place to be. -
Can you point me to a discussion of all the Optimus problems you're talking about?
I googled it, and it doesn't seem like there are many issues, at least not with newer generations. I think nvidia has honed the drivers such that we rarely see issues.hmscott likes this. -
It's a matter of Optimus functionality, and it's all the same as it's been for years.
That Asus ROG laptop transition from same CPU / cooling / frame when switching from GTX7xx GPU's to GTX8xx GPU's was a rare chance to see the real detrimental effects of enabling the iGPU and Optimus when going from dGPU to Optimus.
The Asus models that were dGPU with the GTX7xx's were the G750JW (GTX765m), G750JX (GTX770m), and G750JH (GTX780m). They had 4700HQ CPU's.
The Asus models that were Optimus GTX8xx's were the G750JM (GTX860m), G750JS (GTX870m), and G750JZ (GTX880m). They had 4700HQ, 4710HQ, and 4720HQ CPU's
Asus did upgrade the GPU cooling for the "hotter" running GTX8xx series, but left the CPU cooling the same between generations.
OC'ing the CPU's was easy with XTU, and everyone was used to getting several X's higher multipliers... until the Optimus generation iGPU heated up the CPU and thermal throttled even on stock multipliers for many.
There were many thousands of posts on the ROG forums, I'm hmscott there too, so you can search on the model names, Optimus, thermal throttle, etc.
This thread was an early resolution summary thread put together by dblkk after a dozen previous threads where we worked through the problem trying various solutions, including offloading the CPU rendering to GPU's - which couldn't be done for apps that wouldn't work with Optimus.
THINGS TO TRY ~CPU OVERHEATING JM/JS/JZ MODELS~
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthre...JZ-models&highlight=g750jm+thermal+throttling
That's the one I used to recommend sufferers of Optimus on the JM/JS/JZ refer to to tune their CPU's with XTU to ameliorate the 10c increase in CPU temps.
There are lots of follow up Optimus questions threads, posts and answers, other good threads where we found the temperature differential, and lots of individual posts in other threads when the thermal throttling questions came up again.
It's been a couple of years, so I don't have the links ready in mind to find / list, maybe I will look for them and update this post later.
If you find some good ones, please post them
I posted about Optimus often for quite a while, there should be a lot more of my posts showing up in searches. It's likely a search issue. I am finding posts where I mention Optimus that aren't showing up in searches.
I will add some relevant posts here, as I find them...

I'm not sure if the 180W is even enough for my GL502vy with the 980m. Would have been nice if the 230W adapter was compatible with the GL502.

Hi Guys! Bought the GL502VM (the one with the GTX1060) few days ago. So I wanted to share my first impressions and ask some questions.
So for the first impressions, the laptop performs very well! I have not been able to test demanding games yet, but I tried some free to play games like Smite and TF2 and it was running at a constant 60 fps with the highest settings I could choose.
It came with a 1TB 7200rpm HDD and a 128GB SSD.
The screen is very good, but it feel that that colors are "darker" than my previous laptop (a 3 years old Dell Inspiron 15 3521), but I think that's how it should be. I am just used to the not so deep blacks of my previous laptop
Concerning the dimensions, the laptop is not as thin as it appears in the pictures on Asus website. But I think it still thin for the specs. Furthermore, my old laptop was just a bit thicker, so I am already used to that. The GL502VM is a bit wider than standard 15" laptops, and those bezels are NOT small... not at all!
The fans are a bit loud for my taste though, I was expecting a quieter laptop.
I will do more testing and share with you guys.
Now for the questions I have:
1. Is it normal that my fps was blocked at 60fps? I expected it to go waaaayyy higher than that. I used the Steam fps counter and the one in game too. Is it because of the GSync feature?
2. I read somewhere that someone was able to overclock the refresh rate of the screen. Is that really possible?
3. Actually is there any way to overclock/underclock anything on this laptop? or maybe control the fan speed etc...
4. Talking about fan speed, I find them a bit loud. Some of you said they were going to change the thermal paste of the CPU and/or GPU. Does that help? I assume that if the CPU/GPU is cooler, the fans will run slower, so less noise. Or is it possible (unlikely) to actually change the fans for quieter ones like we do on desktops? I am open to anything that can reduce the fan noise when not gaming or playing light games...
5. The laptop is also more "Flashy" than expected. the orange accent id very bright and dominant! And the orange W A S D keys can be distracting when typing. Are there any Keycaps replacement out there that are good for this laptop?
Because of the things I mentioned above (fan noise, too flashy design..) I did a bit more research for laptops with almost the same specs but that look more professional and found the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW. the only thing is that it has a GTX960M card. But it looks way more professional, is thinner and lighter. I expect it to be quitter, as the GTX960M is not as powerful as the 1060. Is it a good move to return the GL502VM for the Zenbook Pro?
-
2. Yes it's possible, do it at your own risk it can damage the panel I think.
3. Don't know sorry for fan speed, it depends on the laptop, you can try with free softwares, you can underVOLT the CPU so it consumes less power and heats less, regarding overclock, you can't overclock the GPU or the CPU.
4. Changing the thermal paste can help reduce the temperature and thus the sound but on this laptop it won't change a thing IMO because (I used to have a GL502VS I returned it) the GPU temps rise really quickly before hovering around the high 80°C. The laptop is designed to have a slim but loud cooling system
5. I don't think there is sorry.
The 960M is really weak with today standards ! My advice if you want a more sober laptop, take a clevo with a 1060M like the clevo p650RS-G or an MSI GS62VR with 1060VR. It will cost slightly more but both are more sober (Clevo are REALLY sober).

I recently received the GL702VM-DB74. Initial thoughts/impressions.
A co-worker commented that I must have had the laptop for a long time. I had had it for just a few days. This thing is a fingerprint magnet. After just a few short days the thing looks well used (read "gross").
The display is IPS. More specifically, hwinfo64 says it is LG Philips LP173WF4-SPF3. I know displays can potentially change mid-product cycle, but I imagine Asus will stick with an equivalent panel. The specs I found show it as a 60Hz panel, but the GL702VM is definitely set at 75Hz.
The installed 16GB memory is Samsung M471A2K43BB1-CPB, just in case you're thinking about ordering a second SODIMM (as I did).
Opening the back to access memory, M.2, and 2.5" drive is kind of annoying, and can be anxiety-inducing. You remove 10 screws from the back, then carefully pop the roughly 5 million plastic clips around the edges of the laptop. Some day I will want to replace the SATA M.2 SSD with a larger NVMe model, but I am not in a hurry to open the laptop again soon. One of those clips is bound to break eventually.
On the topic of the SSD, it is a SK hynix model HFS256G39TND-N210A.
Running Valley benchmark, the GTX 1060 maxed out at 1835MHz, but seemed to average around 1650MHz. The fans would spin up and get somewhat loud, but could not be heard if I was wearing headphones. The GTX 1060 hovered around 86C with a max of 88C. Ambient temperature was roughly 21C for reference. As for the performance, it benchmarked just over 70fps. Note that was with G-Sync enabled which caps the fps at 75. After disabling G-Sync, the average fps increased to 79.
I was replacing a nearly 4-year-old Lenovo Y580 15.6" laptop. The GL702VM fits inside the Lenovo's laptop bag! This thing is actually fairly small for a 17" laptop.
Work just purchased an Oculus Rift. The GL702VM handles it with ease (so far), even though the Oculus software claims my computer doesn't meet the requirements. Apparently this message can appear for something as silly as a particular USB 3.0 controller being used.
That's all I've got time for (for now) but can try to answer questions if anyone wants to know anything specific. -
I got the GL702VM-DB71 2 days ago...
Did not install any demanding games yet... All i tried is League of Legends....... 200 fps at the highest settings XD, and no fan noise...
But still, LoL is not a demanding game...
Its the first time i use windows 10, i like it except the fact that i have an HDD only in the DB71... Which is awful T_T (im planning on holding on buying an m.2 SSD)
Most thing i like is how light and small it is (compared to other laptops of the same specs).. So i can carry it around easily (every single day...)
Big improvement from an i3 Dell laptop... Thanks for the recommendation guyshmscott likes this. -
How bout the temps on gaming with the 702? I watched reviews and its high up to 50c on normal load. Does it really get hot on the keyboard?

Anyone has a gl702 with 970m? How is it? At 1000 gbp it seems fair.
-
Check this video, scroll over to 3:10 mins and check the thermal image... Though this is after heavy load.
The only part that does get really hot is the part between the screen and keyboard and a bit close to the "P" key (you'll notice it looks yellow-ish in the video).... But using it so far under normal load it did not get uncomfortable to touch (except the part where the vents are... Which is between and keyboard and the screen) -

I have a favor to ask you guys
If you have 2 external monitors with displayport and hdmi, connect both external monitors, and see if you can get a triple display setup working
Also, I read that thunderbolt 3 always has built-in displayport. So the 502vm may actually have 2 native displayports.
Anyone have a usb-c displayport adapter to test the GL502VM?Last edited: Oct 21, 2016 -

Okay this thing has thunderbolt. Does it mean it supports egpu?
-
HDMI -> Oculus Rift
Local display -> showing Rift screen
DisplayPort -> mirroring local display to external display
I do not have a Thunderbolt (Type-C) adapter for the display, sorry. -
only the VM model has thunderbolt. Technically it means you can have egpu, but that depends on whether Asus will keep the thunderbolt bios updated for compatibility.
On my g501vw, the thunderbolt bios is outdated compared to other brands that have thunderbolt. Asus isn't keeping up to date -
Hey can owners with the 1070 version report there temps under stress tests? I'm really not liking what I've been seeing on the VS temps above 90C seem quite common. One guy here was hitting 100. Is over 90C on the cpu or gpu common?

I'm curious how warm the room temp is.
Either room temp too warm, or needs repaste.
I've played with three different g501vw motherboards, and one consistently gets higher scores (650+) in cinebench and doesn't throttle, even after running the test consecutively so many times. One throttles and overheats right away.
So you may just have a crappy paste job from the factory -
So I've been eyeing for the GL502VS for my brother's NB upgrade for a while now, been wondering if any of you have ordered from any US retailer to deliver overseas.
Prostar seems good with the recent -$30 upgrade discount promo, but I wonder if this and their student and NBR discounts all stack? And if international credit card isn't an option, how did you pay?
Thanks -
Is it safe to be getting over 90C temps with the GL502/702?
I've got the GL702VM getting the following:
Gears of war 4: CPU 80C, GPU 87C
Civ VI: CPU 82 C, GPU 87 C
Heaven 4.0 benchmark: CPU 82 C, GPU 87 C
However sometimes I've noticed the temps go even higher than these. Sometimes the GPU boost clock inexplicably fails to throttle down despite rising temperatures, ending up with 90C+ GPU.
Considering that the desktop GTX 1060 variant supposedly throttles at a temp of 83 C this is a bit concerning. Are these kind of numbers normal for the GL502/702? -
I am hoping to check the triple-display setup later today to answer a question earlier in the thread. -
-
isn't there an app where you can manually downclock the card? like throttlestop, but for gpu?

GL502vs (1070) - Win10 Anniversary - Bios .201 (9/7) - stock paste - ambient 22c & -160.2mv offset on core/cache (hopefully done correctly)
Idle - 40c-43c
1 pass through Heaven 4.0 w/ g-sync disabled - Max CPU 78c / GPU 77c
Played Paragon for 3 hours last night with g-sync enabled, both cpu/gpu were in the very low 80's. -
The temperatures are a little warmer than I would like, but I'm not sure they are critical. I suppose I expected slightly better considering it's the same temperature range as I've seen the GTX 980 in laptop reviews. Of course, laptops using GTX 980 were typically bulkier allowing for better cooling systems.
I did connect the GL702VM to two external displays today using the HDMI and DisplayPort connections. It indeed handles the desktop being extended across all three displays. I don't have a USB-C/TB3 adapter to try for a fourth display, but maybe in a couple more weeks.hmscott likes this. -
If you have a Fry's store near you, you can bring your laptop there, they have usb-c adapters you can try in-store.
Then you can go to the computer monitor section and connect 3 displays.
Since this laptop doesn't use the intel graphics, it should be able to push 4 displays.
Thunderbolt 3 is supposed to have displayport built in, so the laptop might actually have 2 displayports.

Typically when I gaming the fan is only at about ~4200rpm and the GPU throttling since it hit the temp limit (87C).
Fan curve favors throttling and lower noise over performance, ASUS should fix that with the next BIOS update. -
So this has 1sata and 1pcie m.2ssd. My new 850 evo will arribe today. Which one is ths sata m.2? The one closer to the third fan or the other?
