If you are going based on the manual downloaded from the associated support page for the GL702, I can confirm that the manual is wrong. Although the manual clearly shows two separate M.2 slots, there is in fact only one.

Okay, i teared it apart. There were 2 m.2 slots. Left one said sata m.2 and the right one said sata/pci-e m.2. Since i had 850 evo i installed it to the left one. Cloned my hdd but now how do i access bios? I need to change boot order so i can actually use it. Thanks!

P.s. I have gl702VT with 970m. Maybe they removed one m.2 slot with pascal revision?

Edit: holding down F2does the trick. Now hopefully things are alright!

Yes we were talking about the Pascal version, since this thread is about that.

Yea i know. Honestly I thought they all had the same layout. Why would they remove an m.2 port in pascal version? Not enough room to breathe?

Alright, i am having very annoying screen flickering. Whenever I game(Only tried on SC2 and lol) Screen flickers black. Sometimes forcing v-sync solves this issue. I have a feeling this is about g-sync. Should it be disabled for some games?

Only thing i have done in nvidia control panel was to turn on MFAA but I dont think thats the issue. I was thinking to enable fast v-sync but I dont think that would change anything. How can I stop this very annoying screen flickering?

OK. I do have a complaint about the GL702VM. The backlight bleed is pretty bad. There is one particularly bad spot in the top right corner. I don't notice it most of the time, but sometimes it's really hard to ignore.

Try updating your Nvidia driver. I read they released a new one to address flickering. Not sure if it is the same thing that you have though.

    Hi everyone

Been lurking here for awhile. I'm buying a new gaming laptop and I'm looking for a 1060 equipped notebook. The GL702 is priced well but I have one specific criteria

Does anyone here have a GL702vm 17" with the 1060 and own the new skyrim special edition? Could you possibly do an fps test on Ultra 1080p plus note temps?

Secondly has anyone tried a repaste with IC diamond to lower temps?

its been almost 2 weeks since i got the GL702VM-DB71..... no complaints but there is one problem i'm having... happened to me twice, where i would turn it on and the ROG logo shows up on the screen alongside the loading symbol.. then the screen goes off except the laptop is still on.... hovering the mouse/pressing anything on the keyboard does nothing. well i don't know if it does because the screen is off... what i did on the 2 times is pressing the power button to shut it down and turning it back on.

i'm waiting for the third time to test if closing the lid and opening it back will solve it or not... :/

did it happen to anyone before? is there any solution(s) i can add to the list beside's my super awesome turn it off and on? :D

    Hello,

I also have an ASUS GL702VM-DB71 with a Samsung 950 PRO of 512Gb, but I can't make the drive appear in BIOS. I've tried all options available in BIOS (version 300) with no luck, however, in device manager in Windows, drive is recognized but without a volume assigned. Could you please post your BIOS settings or any other configuration you made??

    Regards
    Paulo

you may need to remove the 2.5" drive, and leave the m2 in place, install windows on m2, then put the 2.5" back.

So I made a fresh install because I couldnt boot the computer after cloning the hdd to ssd after a few days(Just when I thought everything was fine!)

Anyway Samsung Magician says AHCI Mode is Deactivated and cannot understand which sata interface i am using. I also checked from AS SSD and it says iaStora - OK (Intel 100 series...sata ahci controller). So is everything okay and magician is being stupid?

I downloaded pretty much everything from the asus support page. I am not missing any more drivers, right?
Ones I downloaded from the support page were mostly outdated even though I could download the newwer drives I opted for the ones in asus page. Should I update them? (From Wireless, Bluetooth to Intel Management engine drivers and so)

Where can I see the differences between AudioWizard? Right now I am using "Soundsscape" but I dont know why.

    Thanks a bunch guys!

Thanks! I thought it would have performed better than that though. That is pretty much the same fps that a 980m gets. Was the internal Vsync on? Drivers updated?

OK. Updated drivers and double-checked all settings, including disabling G-Sync and vsync.

    Avg GPU Clock: 1656.85
    Avg GPU Temp: 81.60
    Avg GPU Load: 91.65
    Avg GPU Memory Used: 2273.85
    Avg FPS: 73.32
    Min FPS: 60.00
    Max FPS: 76.00
    Standard Deviation FPS: 2.96

I can't help but think there is a frame cap somewhere. Most of the frames recorded by Fraps were 75 (the refresh rate of the panel). G-Sync and vsync were disabled. vsync was disabled both in the Nvidia control panel and in the SkyrimPrefs.ini. It was also visible in-game; tearing could clearly be seen in many scenes.

In any case, with a minimum FPS of 60, and G-Sync enabled, the game should be buttery smooth for you. I know I have no plans to run it without G-Sync.

Awesome that is a lot better! 81c isn't too hot either. I don't think there is another in game vsync.. is not the in game vsync shut off in the skyrim.ini? Not the SkyrimPrefs.ini? It has been awhile.

With this info I now have to decide what to buy. Asus GL702vm, Clevo P670, Clevo P775, MSI GT72.

    Thanks kylejtuck

Hey, need your advice here. I am considering buying gl502vs (the one with 1070...) but I've read that there are some issues with high temps (above 90c) and battery drain even when plugged.
Can those be confirmed? Or there we are talking faulty units here?
In case that there is the battery drain issue under heavy load and heat... How bad are they? Do they affect performance?
In particular, is this machine able to handle heavy GPU loads for long hours? (training neural networks for example...).

    Thanks.

I just got the GL702 from Best Buy but there is a backlight bleed on the the top left corner of the screen. I don't know if I will replace it because I'm afraid to get another one with severe bleed. I love the laptop's design but the bleeding really annoys me. Regarding the temps. The maximum GPU temp I got was 92-93C with heaven unengine benchmark (ultra settings). When I tested older games like NBA 2k14 max settings I got 75-80C. Playing Tomb Raider 2013 Max settings is hovering around 86-87C same with Crysis Warhead on Enthusiast settings. Anyone here having backlight bleed issues with GL702, I will appreciate your response.

I just got my laptop from USA and right after I started it up and connected to the internet Asus update prompted me to do 2 updates, one of them was for the bios. (version 303) It rebooted and started up the Easyflash utility and gave me an error during verifying (exactly "rom update not success"), I've waited for a couple of minutes hoping for an auto recovery but it just stayed frozen. I've tried rebooting it and it never worked again, it's now a complete brick.
Power light comes on, hdd starts up and that's it. No LCD, fan or anything else works. I've tried some methods like ctrl+home and putting the bios files with different names on a USB but it doesn't even try to read it. Nothing I've tried helped.

So, I'm taking advantage of global warranty but I'm afraid that they will just offer an exchange which will be very expensive for me as I would have to pay for shipping and may have to pay for import duties again.
It seems writing directly or changing the bios chip works, but I haven't seen anything for this model as it's too new. Do you guys have any other ideas?

Btw, I'm shocked to learn that it's so easy to brick even though I used easyflash and not the windows based one. (actually, I didn't even use anything. It automatically bricked itself.) Can't believe there are no recovery methods.

GL502VS here, 32gb ram. I have slight bleed in the top right corner but is well within what I find acceptable. Purchased at MicroCenter during a $300 off promotion.

Temperatures have dropped dramatically after undervolting with Throttlestop, stable -170.9mv on both core and cache. 3hr gaming sessions my temps do not reach 80c (Gears 4, Paragon). I game on a homemade lap desk and cut a fairly large square hole underneath for better breathing. I also completed a fresh install of Win10 to remove all the bloatware.

I had the Clevo P650RS but returned it due to severe backlight bleed.

typical asus, they never fully beta test their products, so they have huge oversights like the battery drainage because the ac adapter isn't powerful enough.

I thought the same thing when I had to undervolt my new MSI gs60 to make wifi, gaming, etc stable. Just bought a razer blade, hoping that because they make so few systems, theirs would be properly tested and callibrated, only to find threads like this showing that it performs 10% worse across the board than MSI's laptop with exactly the same hardware probably because razer placed a very low temp throttle to prevent overheating in its tiny form factor. At this point, I think these manufacturers know what they're shipping, and know that their competitors are also shipping products with defects - my pessimistic view is that our decision is which defect do we want to live with.

Hello guys i write from Italy.

    In Italy it's available only GL502VM but i'd like the GL702VM , so i 'd like buy it on Amazon.de or Amazon.uk

    1) Temperature and fan noise is the same between 2 models??

    2) Screen panel on GL702VM use PWM?
Asus GL502VM use LP156WF6 100% Flicker free (NO PWM)
    and ASUS GL702VM ??

Here are 2 cooling system :

I just picked up a GL502VS yesterday and I had the battery drain problem too. I played maybe around an hour of WoW on max settings and it drained the battery down to about 87%. This was with it plugged in the whole time. The performance was good, temps were stable.

I talked to Asus and they thought it sounded abnormal, so did the tech at the store I got it from. He gave me another one to try and see if it's a fluke or some random batches. So far, the new one seems to be doing the same thing. I'm still testing it, but I started this time at 60% and played some WoW and it dropped to 55%. I'm afraid to see what it would do with a real graphics intensive new game. I will most likely return it to the store tomorrow and exchange for a new G752 for a large sum of extra money... I really liked the 502 in every other way, it's very light and portable, performs flawless, but I can't get past the battery thing. What happens a year or two down the road when the battery is weaker? Do I only get to play an hour and the thing shuts down or throttles back?

A gaming laptop should be able to maintain full performance for an indefinite amount of time while plugged in.

I would say don't try to buy from .de unless you are absolutely sure it is the keyboard layout you want. Germany has their own QWERTZ layout which most GL502VS product descriptions take as given, but is not represented in product photos. You want to keep an eye out for the DB- suffix to notice a difference.

Guys, i have very big problem. Occasionally keyboard stops working, this only happened on LoL but this might be because thats only one of the few instances where i heavily use keyboard. When it stops working only way to fix is close the lid and open it again. Then it starts working but as you have guessed this is incredibly frustraring and i must fix it! Question is how...

If it matters i removed the bottom case and installed an ssd and replaced rams.

I have the gl502vy and have a couple of questions. First, there is a pressure mark (not a dead pixel) on the lower left corner of my screen. It is incredibly annoying and now for some reason, I keep noticing it. It is only visible in white or other bright backgrounds and not in black or darker backgrounds. I wanted to know what is the exact part number of my screen? Is it the LP156WF6-SPB1 or something else? Also, my laptop has g-sync. Will I still be able to use g-sync if I replace my screen?

Also, what benchmarks are you guys using to measure your total power draw? I have the 980m so if the 1070 is causing the battery to drain, the 980m might be doing so as well. Does your power adaptor get super hot and untouchable when you game on it? Mine does but I think this is normal. Can I just use the power adapter from the G752 on my GL502VY?

specifically ask if the bios team can look into it and create a fix

    hello!

I've been having the problem of the screen turning on when i turn the laptop on (GL702-vm), the "Republic of Gamers" is shown and then the screen would turn off... the lights of the keyboard itself does not turn on because it is as if it's in sleep mode... the only way to turn the screen on again is to close the lid and open it up again.... the problem is happening to me daily now....

do you guys have any fix for it? a power saving option that i don't know of? >.<

or should i go for a warranty fix....

and yes i do have backlight bleeding T_T....... unrelated but ugh.... sucks....

So I got the GL502VS to set up and test it out before I send it to the owner.

    Ambient temperature: 23C
    Humidity: 70-90%
Accessories: Zalman NC-1000 coolpad with fans off

    Prime95 small FFTs
    -150mV undervolt
    6 hours
    Highest core temperature: 76C

Prime95 small FFTs + OCCT GPU test
    -150mV undervolt
    6 hours
    Highest core temperature: 88C

Overwatch (1080p, Fastsync, optimal settings, 145 FPS limit)
    -150mV undervolt
    2 hours
    Highest GPU temperature: 81C

    Other observations:
No observable battery drain (99%) while plugged in in all loading scenarios above.
Ended up not trying AIDA64 since the full system stress test can maintain higher undervolts in contrast to playing games (Overwatch).

I understand. Are you sure that this is BIOS related? It just happened again yesterday. Cant tell how frustrating it is when all the buttons stop working when you are gaming. I want to eliminate all other options before I do this. And keep in mind everything was fine before i installed my m.2 ssd and installed windows from scratch.

there are no other options, unless you want to remove your ssd and restore it to default config to see if the keyboard seizes up again.

Otherwise, it's effortless to report a problem. Email asus support and instruct them exactly how to duplicate your issue. Don't spare any details

There's actually a new bios update released last month that fixes a keyboard issue for the pascal 502's
bios 202 for the VM, and bios 201 for the VS

I'm out of warranty thanks to asus. Anyway, has anyone dumped a working bios for gl702 model? Or knows a way to get one?

Edit: I've added an ssd myself and because of this Asus Turkey voided the warranty, put the blame on me and said that I shorted both the mainboard and the ram. Asked for around 750$ for all of it. The only problem was the faulty bios update, that's why I need a working bios dump.

    Do you have the GL702VM?

A few other people on amazon also said their keyboard died, for the 702vm model

Quick update. I received the Apple Type-C Digital AV adapter (have one of the new MacBook Pros for work) and confirmed that the Apple adapter worked just fine to connect the GL702VM to an HDMI display via the TB3 port. While I was at it, I figured I would try splitting across 4 displays (laptop + 3 external). It worked great. After changing the settings, the computer was sluggish for about 5 or 6 seconds while it reconfigured the displays, but then worked normally. Not sure I will ever actually NEED to do this, but if you want to connect 3 external displays, you can do it.

Does anyone have a GL502VM to confirm whether it has thunderbolt enabled?

It doesn't make sense that the VM has it while the VS doesn't.
From what I've seen, the mobo outlay is identical apart from one less RAM slot on the VM.
If they using the Intel Alpine Ridge controllers for the USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C port then it should be TB3 capable as well.

Any Asus reps around whom I can ask?

@hmscott and all owners - what are max CPU and GPU temps for the VM with stock paste? If I buy one, do I have to invest in a thermal paste like ICD or CLU, or is it like MSI where the stock paste is good enough for the first 2 years?

Out of 7 Asus laptops I haven't had to re-paste any of them, they all were operating fine 3-4 years in to their live's.

Undervolting is key with Skylake CPU's, that's what you need to do first to get CPU temps down as low as you can.

Re-pasting starts a cycle of re-pasting, so unless you like doing that as a hobby rather than gaming or something else, then I would stay away from re-pasting.

I helped a lot of people on Asus ROG forum's for a few years, and very few new laptops *needed* re-pasting.

Most people freak out too quickly, panic, and make lots of poor choices without settling in and getting to know their laptop - it's something all of us do but over time learn to we control it.

Give a few days thought before rash actions, it's always the best move :)

Hopefully an owner will post their undervolted temps so you can see from first hand use what they are seeing :)
