It should be standard operating procedure doing a re-paste out of the box, to get a baseline reading for the original paste and a reading after the re-pasting, but for some reason you need ask them when you order - certainly before they process your order and do the re-pasting.

I believe I asked and they said they do not do before temps, but do check after which I thought was odd

That's good they check before boxing it up :)

I guess they don't care what the previous results are, but I would, what if they are really bad - indicating some kind of heatsink failure?

Then when they do test after re-pasting if there is a temp problem, is the problem theirs or did the temp problem exist before they re-pasted?

Makes it tough to debug. Less so if the final temps are good :)

Wow, awesome temps, then I remembered the GX800 is water-cooled :)

Still awesome, maybe check this thread and google for other GX800 reports, and see how they compare.

    Pretty exciting stuff :)

I want to buy a GX800VH from Hidevolution in the following weeks. I have a question for actual users - Have you encountered any technical issues or problems with the laptop and certainly the cooling station?

Yes, but their testing looks like BS to me. They tested in only in gaming and quick synthetic benchmarks? What game? I know some games that wont stress my GPU past 50C, and some that take both of them to upper 60s. Your CPU temps look about 4C cooler than mine.

No issues yet, which is very strange. This is the first high end laptop I had that has not given me any problems. Its perfect so far. But every laptop is built differently, you always have the chance of getting a lemon. I would assume Asus put extra quality control into these 6000 dollar machines, though.

First of all thank you for a quick reply, one more thing - for how long you are a owner (when you began using it) and how do you like its performance? The 4K display good? And do you think a hidevolution repaste is a good idea? I will buy the samsung SSD's, so it will be taken apart anyway, so just thinking is the repaste a good investment? Sorry if the question is repeating - I did not have the time to read all the thread from the beginning. So you are pretty happy with it. I own a ROG G750JZ for the last three years, trying to figure out if the difference of performance.

What version of Nvidia driver are you trying? What is the version that came with the Laptop?

Often Nvidia takes a while to include new GPU ID's from laptops in their installer database, and you get these issues - until Nvidia updates their installer.

You can complain to Nvidia - include your Device Manager ID info for your GPU(s), and post into the newest support forum thread at Nvidia for their lastest driver, for example:

Official 381.65 Game Ready WHQL Display Driver Feedback Thread (Released 4/6/17)
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/...play-driver-feedback-thread-released-4-6-17-/
    http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/117263/en-us

Or, you can make your own thread in the top level of the Driver Support Feedback forum, like this:

device can't find compatible hardware issue, GL702VMK
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/...an-t-find-compatible-hardware-issue-gl702vmk/

And, in that thread it looks like the answer to your question, some Asus ID's got left out of this build:

"you'll have to wait, a few asus substrings went missing in this update."

You could go back and try 1 older Nvidia driver revision at a time, until you find one that works :)

It also might be helpful to post about your specific Make / Model / GPU specs in the 381.65 Support thread so that Nvidia includes the device ID for your laptop GPU in the next release.

i've talked to Nvidia about it and they plan to release the next driver with the asus gx800 device IDs so we should be good, for now the drivers installed are fine, but i will tell you updating to the creators update for windows 10, is complete garbage and half the utilities and drivers on this machine just dont work!

but regardless, on Extreme preset with dock connected and Fans set to Auto gpu's dont really get above 60-65c and cpu stays in the low 70s, and is whisper quiet and holds 4.4ghz and 1.8ish on GPUs, so far so good!

Yup, better to hold off on doing the Creators Update - many have reported small and large issues - others say it's fine at first, then goes bad later.

Maybe someone here want to do a stress test longer than 1 hour and post average temps recorded after that?

Nah, don't waste time running stress tests longer than 5-15 minutes, it'll stabilize before then, and anything longer is unnecessary abuse of the hardware.

I say this for all hardware, not just laptops - cheap or expensive. You aren't proving anything, and you might screw things up, it's not worth it to push things for longer than normal use would.

Yeah, that's a real dangerous bug to leave in a shipping product.

You leave your computer on to do stuff, leaving the Overwatch game main menu up, and come back to find your computer melted down...while idling at the main menu.

Same idea as abusing your computer by running 100%/100% CPU / GPU(s) load running for more than 15 minutes "to see what happens", hours later...

I keep mine on auto. But I would use intel XTU and undervolt the CPU. They pumped wway too much voltage into the 7820HK on this laptop. Way more than is needed. I'm at 4.2ghz at -0.125v.

Can you post a screen shot of your XTU settings?
Also what does your cpu voltage usually run at during gaming, at -0.125 im sitting around 1.127 @4.2

I am not near my laptop but tomorrow I can. My voltage hovers around 1.090 and 1.130 depending on the load. Much better than the 1.2XX numbers I was getting with the stock settings.

Yeah I would start at 4.0ghz and see first. Not many chips can sustain 4.2 at this voltage. Hope you got a good performer !

also what do you use to monitor cpu temps, im using the android rog app and MSI Afterburner OSD, and they are way different, i think ROG is showing lowest core, not sure. but at 4.2 -0.125 its around 65-70ish, and GPU's are staying in the mid to low 60s @ +100/+200

The new Kabylake 7820HK has been reported stable to 4.5ghz, 300mhz better than the 6820HK, so if you've got the newer part, give it a shot :)

ill have to check temps again tomorrow when im not so tired, but playing Wildlands just now, auto fans gpu's weren't going above 65 and CPU was up to 80-85c, no throttling but i dont think the Liquid Ultra is doing its job, but im scared to reopen this and repaste with IC diamond since this Liquid ultra is already there im scared of removing it without making damages.

its also at stock settings of 4.4 currently no tweaks just out of the box extreme setting which i know is throwing alot of voltage into it but i dont think it should be in the mid 80s, i will check again tomorrow, but im really thinking a repaste might be a good idea.

Those temps are normal, if not good for the 4.4ghz stock setting. This laptop throws over 1.3v on the cpu with that clock. You have to undervolt and set manually with XTU. The asus app is insane.

Can someone please help me with this. I was sold on the laptop from Linus's video especially because he showed there wasn't a huge difference in performance when it's in docked mode vs undocked mode however this video contradicts what Linus said. Can someone clarify this please?

    It's a mystery :)

The 2nd GPU needs full power to run, and early tests like that video you referenced were done with pre-production units with 230w PSU's instead of the 330w PSU's it's shipping with today.

It could be some games running both GPU's in SLI off the dock are pulling just enough power to meet what the 330w provides; that PSU will provide more than 330w - some have noted 400w+ under load.

The Cooling from the dock will help provide a bit more headroom, but if the off the dock mode air-cooling is grand enough and the 330w PSU overloaded provides enough power, that would explain the close results on and off the dock.

Linus's video I don't think showed the full potential of the GX800 on the dock, he should have matched Desktop 1080 SLI performance much closer on some of those games.

There may be additional GPU headroom available that Linus didn't tune for, perhaps even a little on the CPU too.

If he undervolted Linus didn't mention that either, which would help reduce temps and perhaps give a bit more performance.

Thanks for the clarification. The reason I was worried is because at home sure I'll obviously use it on the dock but I'll be using this laptop mostly when I travel and even though the dock comes with a suit case I won't be taking to with me. Once I saw the performance differences were small I was very excited however the second video scared me off the product. I just hope it is in fact the case and the performance will be good off the dock as well.

Either way would be fine, even if you can't get full power off the dock it's still an 18" 4k laptop with a 1080 in single GPU mode :)

I wouldn't count on full performance off the dock for every game / usage.

I can imagine batch jobs doing CUDA work loading both GPU's and the CPU to 100% tripping the 330w PSU.

When you get it, please come back and let us know what you find :)
