I went through the same process. The 17 isn't that much larger of a unit plus you get a blue-ray drive, 192 bus GPU, more hard drive space and an "improved keyboard".

-
SandyBridge models = SW, SX Waffleboy
-
You can have a blu-ray combo as well as more hdd (but not ssd) in g53sx, the only problem is gpu bus(192 or 128) which is VERY important
Just realised g53sx has 4-in 1 card reader and bluetooth v2.1 while g74sx has 3-in1 card reader and bluetooth v3.0 -
And? I know that. So only MSI laptops come with the Turbo button...
-
I've just read this and I am shocked hopefully on the same page someone mentioned 64 bit memory controllers so i really hope they put 192 bit gtx 560m in a g53sx. 2gb or 3gb it's a completely waste. even 1gb is enough. I wish they would put 1,5 gb instead of 2gb so we could be sure that it will be 192 bit

Hello,
I Need to get a new gaming laptop and I basically settled on the G73SW-XN2 as it is in my price range. My question is whether this is a good time to buy it. It look like they are coming out with the G74 line now, I don't have any computer at the moment as my last one broke and I am wondering what the usual timetable is to get a slightly nerfed XN2 version of the G74 that would be in my price range.
Also, it looks like the main changes in this is an additional 4GB of ram and a GPU bump to the 560m, are these changes going to be consistent with the XN2 version? As far as I can see they usually gimp the HD, Blue Ray and Backpack / mouse.
Thanks -
You have to write specs of G73SW-XN2
-
And which g74sx model? additional 4gb ram is a waste, the important thing is better gpu and improved keyboard
-
Vesa, I love the new KB. Having a g73sw for a week, then switching to a g74, the difference is significant. I love the sturdier feel of the g74 kb. my only concern about the g74 is heat. my g74 idles at high 30's - low 40's
-
I guess my question is this then, how long does it normally take then to start selling a... I guess... "Newegg" version of the G74? Is going to be a couple of weeks or a couple of months? Currently in the G73s there is an XN2 version which is selling on Newegg. The reason I am asking is to find out whether or not it's worth waiting for the cheaper model to show up or just buy the model linked above.
Thanks -
Ofirio, you can pick up a "cheaper" g74sx-xr1 at microcenter now.
Micro Center - ASUS G74SX-XR1 Laptop Computer - Black G74SX-XR1 -
Do you by any chance know if a Newegg version is going to come out? The reason I ask is because I have a gift card for Newegg that I would like to use. And if one is going to come out, do you have any idea how long until it does?
Thanks -
G74sx is released and i dont think it will take a lot of time for a "Newegg" version, also you can customise your own g74sx from xoticpc, gentechpc, powernotebooks etc... but if you want to use your newegg gift card and can wait a couple of weeks then it's alright. Hope this helped you
-
Yea you are right, KB of g74 is much better than g73's KB. Heat? It shouldnt be a problem thanks to 2 fans. What is the temp under full load?
-
Thanks a lot Vesa, I don't have much rep power but enjoy it.
-
after running occt and prime95 to stress the cup and gpu for around 10 - 12 minutes, the temps are low 70's for gpu and low 80's for cpu.
-
That's quite good actually, nothing to worry about.
-
Ofirio between the G73SW-XN2 and the G74SX-XR1 I'm not sure if a gtx560m is really worth a $150 alone for the upgrade (I hear its 7-10% faster but remember the gtx460m could be better optimised for the current drivers), I've seen the gtx560 as a $50 upgrade from a gtx460m on some sites where you can customize your laptop. The newer G74SX-XR1 also has a "slow" 640GB 5,400RPM Hard Drive by today's standards as opposed to the 500GB HDD 7200rpm on the G73SW-XN2 even though the newer G74SX has more ram which shouldn't really make a difference going from 8 to 12 gigs (I personally feel 8 is the magic number). Still the newer gpu and the new redesign is nice, between those two imo it's a close call unless the G74SX has better cooling over the G73SW, than I would definitely go with the newer one (which I would hope it does since it's "redesigned").
Out of curiosity I went and customized a g74sx-a1 based on the G74SX-XR1 (from micro center) on xoticpc and it ended up being $166 extra, however you get the mouse, backpack, additional year of warranty and most importantly a customized reseller will also test your computer again before shipping it out to you. I could be biased because I got the ASUS G74SX-A1 from xotic because I don't think 1 year warranty is enough for a "gaming" laptop and I really needed a new backpack anyways. If my spending limit was around $1300, I didn't need a new laptop asap and I had a gift card for $100 from newegg I'd definitely wait a week or two in hopes of them releasing a cheaper version of the g74sx. - can't believe I just typed all that. -
If you can get an order in today, 6/30, you can qualify for a $100 rebate from Asus on G73sw.
-
Thanks for the additional info Trist, I appreciate it. I think I am going to hold out a little longer and see what the Newegg model is going to be as I really like the new KB design of the G74.
Thanks Again. -
How come the G74SX-3DE from Amazon has a 460M instead of a 560M? is that a typo?
Amazon.com: ASUS G73SW-3DE Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch 3D Gaming Laptop (Black): Computer & Accessories
And how come Asus lists under the specifications a HD Camera?
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS G74SX
typos? -
"ASUS G73SW-3DE" -
My bad...
How about the ASUS Website Specs? -
Umm HD Web Camera 720P I guess, one of the spec...?
-
Wow thanks, my first rep
)
-
did I miss something on this thread? why is the g74 cheaper then the g73 on NewEgg?
and they are both -A1's -
anyone knows when whill the G74sx-3DE will be available to ship? thanks
-
probably g73 with better specs and g74 with worser specs
-
G74SX-A1: $1,799.99
Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.00GHz
12GB DDR3
1.5TB HDD
BD Combo
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
3GB GDDR5
G73SW-A1: $1,849.99
Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.0GHz)
8GB DDR3
1TB
BD Combo
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM
Doesn't make sense! lol -
Thats too strange, there must be typo somewhere in specs
-
Nope, just one of those weird pricing screw ups probably!

Remember the Best Buy model of G73JW? It only had 1GB VRAM on a 128bit bus (4 memory chips). GTX 460M (VRAM 1Gb vs 1.5Gb)
256MB * 4 = 1GB
512MB * 4 = 2GB
A 128bit bus meant only 40GB/s memory bandwidth instead of the full 60GB/s, which really did impact the performance. And it looks like it's going to be the same story again.
So basically, the G53SX is actually going to be worse than the G53SW.
What's ridiculous is that the cards are crippled to save money, but then again Asus slapped 2GB (3GB on G73SX!!) of useless VRAM on them. Using 1.5GB would have easily offset the difference and would have allowed a full 192bit bus. The cards can hardly utilise 1.5GB VRAM anyway.
Luckily for Asus, 90% of people have no clue about this, and 2GB/3GB sounds great for marketing. "2GB is obviously better than 1.5GB!!"
Edit: Oh, and the gimped 1GB 460m only had 16 ROPs instead of the usual 24.

then how come new NVidia GTX 580M and ATI 6990M have 2GB???? does that mean that they are crippled as well??? -
Asus makes the units according to the wishes of the retailer.

I am sure that there were some 3DMark11 results on this thread somewhere but im blown if I can find them. Any stock and o/c results flying about the G74?
Thanks -
Hers's some benchmarks from xotic and gen-tech.

Look on the last page also i posted some comparisons. -
new benchmark with latest 275.50 driver on G74SX-A2 stock configuration, great improvement from stock driver:
- i7-2630QM
-16GB DDR3 1333MHz
- OverclockedAttached Files:

Many thanks gents and yes I agree great increase compared to the stock results. Nice overclocks too are those stable when furmark stressed?
-
Dallers 920/1840 is completely stable anything over seems cause the display driver to crash, more 560m benchmarks in sig. Results from msi gt683r which has same hardware components as Asus.
-
Yeah with 275.33 I had to use 2920XM, 1600MHz RAM to get similar score:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...-video-gtx-560m-hands-kind-3d11-275-33-oc.jpg
great improvement with 275.50. -
Can we get a G74SX disassembly video, Ken?
-
Ok, hopefully it can be done next week.
-
Oh yes I see blimey what is the overclocking like with the 2920xm? Is it too much to say I was expecting more from that benchmark with that hardware?
One thing that does stick out is how dependent on the GPU 3DMark11 is your high physics and combined score does not show much of a gain against the overall score achieved. I guess its better this way because the GPU is a major bottleneck in mobile systems but Vantage seems to be a good analysis of CPU/GPU scoring allowing 2 separate tests each.
Was that a hint? maybe it was. But if you did have the time....well Vantage with a 2920xm, 1600mhz, 560M would be nice to compare too as well
I aim to sort my vantage score out because the 920xm heat is restricting my score. Do you have heat problems with the 2920xm when overclocked?
On a side note gosh how fantastic the G74 would be with your setup and just having a 580M instead of a 560M. It pains to say it but Asus need to come back onboard and stop messing around with 192bit nonsense. -
Yeah if I have time to test Vantage with 2920XM 1600MHz RAM. however, Vantage doesn't test DX11.
I didn't have problems with 2920XM overclocked.
I did test Bad Company 2 with new 275.50 driver overclocked, check it out:

How come ETA for G74SX-3DE ( GenTech Website) changed from mid July to mid August?
I was pretty excited, now i have to wait longer...
Would be nice to get it with a GTX 570 instead of a 560 as reward for so much wait =D -
Last minute revamp
-
isn't the FPS average value very similar to the ones of the G73JH? (just asking, not flamming)Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
The 3Dmark11 score of 2600ish is what I achieved with my 720qm and 5870M overclocked so I would assume this is the case.
Pleased to see the 5870M still pulling its weight but the 560M pulls away from it with Pixel Fillrate and bandwidth when overclocked. Sooooo......why is there no performance difference?!
We all knew this would happen though if the 460M is slightly below the 5870M then the same card with higher clocks should be on par with it.
Its all about the Sandy, once again that is the difference. Sadly, because I really fancy a new model but the G74 is not it. -
One thing I dont understand is why they left mxm standard again.? Its not like we could try and do upgrades anyway
-
Hmm wonder why? 570m ?!?
