Any update on a full review? Seeing as how the screen is the major difference but would like to see game numbers in both 2d and 3d modes and also boot times with the hybrid drives.

Are the drivers that the unit ships with the latest nvidia drives things like that.

He will/should be selling the Hannstar screen out of his X7200 the moment the 120hz screens become available and it should work perfectly in your G72..

I JUST received this 3D laptop an hour ago from UPS.

And OH MY GOD is the 3-D experience ever magical. I'm going to box myself in a room for days LOL

This is actually my first real 3-D experience and the visuals are just stunning. It comes with a build in emitter too.

Oh and for those who wondered, you CAN overlay them ontop of your prescribed glasses ...perfect fit.

Thanks Ken @ GenTech ...once again for being awesome.

Going to blockbuster later and grabbing a few 3D movies like Avatar.

I will be doing a full review once I catch up on my homework.

Screen is very nice - no complaints.

I noticed that after a 3D experience I need to close my eyes for a couple minutes because objects in the real world look like they're either moving, larger, smaller or contain a different colour lol.

I'll post pics over the weekend :)

Almost all asus models come with more than one screen. Is the one that ken has the same as the one that voidoi has?

The utility ken used doesnt give the whole code.

They're all the same batch, and I believe Voodooi purchased from GenTech. So it's the same screen. In any event the screen isn't in any retail channel so you are going to need some patience if you want it. :)

Im not sure all laptops from the same batch even use the same screen. Theres nothing that supports this.

Its likely though, especially if he actually bought it from ken, I didnt see that part.

The utility ken uses describes a 220 nit screen. Does anyone notice that the screen is much less bright than the standard screen?

It's 120Hz matte-type screen and I don't believe there are many manufacturers to choose from at this moment. Unlike 60JHz screen there are many manufacturers for Asus too choose from.

So I believe all G73JW-3DE screens are the same.

Buyers may want to be aware of this:

I spoke to 6 reps and 1 supervisor at Asus because I had a technical issue with my 3D and they all told me to hook it up to HDMI/3-D TV b/c 3D laptops don't exist (which Is obviously a lie). Absolutely horrible service from Asus if you'll need assistance with getting your 3D to work properly. No one in that call center is up to date with any 3D product. 4.5HRS on the phone and no one knows squat.

You will not get technical support at all for this unit by anyone at Asus for the 3D part.

Just thought I would let you buyers know and perhaps someone from Asus will read this.

Yeah the Matte screen along with it being 120hz is reason enough.. 3d is a nice option to have even if not ideal on a single 460m..

I am so spoiled by my matte screen it will be hard to switch back to glossy which i am sure at some point i wont have much choice unless everyone switches to matte which the odds are slim to none that will happen ..

I think there's a growing demand/awareness of matte screens lately.

Quad, do you remember when I was disturbing the AW forum with the annoying polls and AG filter quests? I even wanted to tear the lid apart to remove the E2E cover on my M17X...
When you have a decent matte screen it's really tough to go back to gloss...

Yeah i have hated glossy screens for sometime.. But glass screens are in a whole nother realm beyond just the standard glossy ones.. I hated the W90s glass covered screen and i hated the M17x's as well .. The only thing that can help slightly overcome a super glossy glass screens are if its SUPER bright like in the RGB M17xs case .. On the W90 it was just terrible in every regard because it was so dim ..

But yeah Matte screens are FTW for sure :D.. I have had a few in the past across various machines but sadly you dont always get a choice on every machine you buy which i wish was the case..

I can see this new screen being very popular across other models that can handle it .. 120hz and Matte=Drool

The screen is actually matte finish instead of glossy. it is made by LG and 3D looks amazing on it. I would say also that it is maybe 30% brighter than the glossy screen in the G73jw-a1."

Well, after toying around with colours, settings, reading manuals, forums, being on the phone to tech support and almost going insane, I got SC2 and Bad Company 2 partially working.

The problem in-game is the colours are misalligned so it looks like there's red paints allover the floor/walls of the maps, as well as duplicate units.

As for WoW, it's not working.

Asus should of made these plug-n-play ...not forcing the customer to tinker with this for 12 hours. I have a huge migrane now because I've been trying to allign colours for hours. Envy 17 3-D customers seem to be enjoying their 3-D gaming experience out of the box, it's a shame that Asus seems to have these rushed out with misalligned settings that is very very difficult to allign. Literally been trying to get it going since lunch time (its now midnight).

Hopefully I get it to work soon, argh. I'll post once I get it 100% working and I'll include what I did to make it happen in my review.

I would just contact their customer support and ask them. I think it all depends on when you ordered and how many units they initially get. Hopefully they will get more shipments over the next couple of weeks so you can hopefully get it by Christmas. Good luck. I'm hoping to get mine this week.

Dirt 2 / Bad Company 2 3D Vision Performance test:

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dPh1PDZH-ew?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dPh1PDZH-ew?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='560' height="340"></embed></object>

Dirt 2 doesn't seem to work very well, there is a black spot (shadow) during game play.

Bad Company 2 doesn't have any issues except performance drop quite a bit.

Voodooi, when you installed WOW did you install then patch each game, or just install all 3 then patch at the end? Just wondering as hopefully I'll be installing on mine tomorrow.

Looks like the shadow is there even in 2D and it gets worse in 3D. What about 3D movies? Hopefully that at least works without issues. Did people experience similar problems on the G53 as well?

Voodooi, Lee seems to have 3D working for him...maybe he can help. In spite of the delay in releasing this laptop, Asus did a bad job eh. Hopefully they will fix this before releasing the next batch.

If anyone could post the exact process they did to make 3D gaming work, I'd appreciate it, because I've tried everything and have now given up due to frustration. I'll give it another shot once I'm caught up with my homework. Ken has been VERY helpful in e-mails as well as other 3D users from the G53 model, but alas, no luck in making it work. Followed everyone's instructions to a tee. Was going to make a review, but I'll wait, b/c if I did, I'd give it a F for Fail b/c the company doesn't even know the unit exists. Everything else is working out to be excellent ...gaming, screen, etc. Screen is very, very beautiful I might add.

For some reason the nVidia stereostopic submenu vanished. I did try it with my glasses (when the stereostopic was working and the option was enabled), but the glasses don't seem to work when the stereostopic option was enabled. Perhaps my glasses were a "lemon", I have no idea. I'll call nVidia tomorrow, since they closed @ 5PM. Asus' "promised call back", which I knew wasn't going to happen didn't happen.

Also, it seems that I got a G53 bag with it, because the G73 can barely fit into the bag. I've held both bags side by side and they're the same (maybe I got the wrong bag? lol - I still have the g53 bag, but unfortunately not the unit). My G53 used to slide in perfect, but G73 is hell to squeeze in. The mouse is alot better than the G53's, though. It has side buttons, unlike the G53's, which has none.

Voodoo: What you are describing sounds like what I went through with Nvision on my G53. The end result is I MUST play ALL 3D games in 1280x720 (720p) at 120hz. You can set this in the Nvidia control panel. Set your screen res on the laptop to this as well and then start the game and set the res to match. Your 3D should then work. If it does, you are mixing refresh rates/res in-game vs your desktop and 3D vision settings which will cause blurry images, inaccuarte colors, and duplicate objects on the screen. Give it a shot and if it works, start trying to bump up the res from there.

I have a 1080p 3D HDTV and I cannot get FULL HD to work with Nvision, I have to lower the res as mentioned above.

Hi guys, just made an account here because I'm really interested in this laptop.

I saw a G73JW-A1 in Micro Center and fell in love with it. It just had a presence to it, and the keyboard was awesome. I found out about the 3DE through Xotic PC and was about to order one...

However, an employee let me install the Final Fantasy XIV Benchmark on the A1 and let me tell you, it ran terribly.

Now, I realize that a lot of people consider it a terrible game, and the benchmark itself is kinda cruddy... And I don't know much about laptop graphics cards, but I expected the GTX 460M to be at least as powerful as the one 8800 GT I run on my home computer.

But apparently that's not the case. I got about 2/3rds the performance of what I get at home on max which was terrible. This was on "low" resolution for the benchmark; the "high" resolution ran so choppy it wasn't even worth it. My excitement about ordering the laptop went from 100 to 0 in a matter of two minutes.

I know there were a lot of concerns about the card being too weak to handle 3D, but that's not what I care about. I get about 40 FPS with graphics maxed except for AA which is on 2x @ 1920x1200 on my one 8800 GT.

What can I realistically expect for gaming usage from the GTX 460M? Is it really this disappointingly weak of a card?

Also, I keep reading that the maximum amount of RAM the A1 takes is 8 GB, but Xotic PC lets me upgrade it and the 3DE to 16 GB. Is this accurate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) Hearing that it has a matte screen makes me jump for joy, but if I can't enjoy a beautiful game on it, then what's the point? :O

Man, those are quite impressive. Shame on Micro Center for not having any of those games installed to test out the A1.

I don't understand it, then. Those games run so well, yet the FFXIV benchmark was terrible.

I'm not sure if this is the XA or the A1 (I'm thinking the A1 based on the positioning of the turbospeed and other buttons) but you can see how poorly the real FFXIV game runs on it: YouTube - My new Asus G73JW plays FFXIV

And he's not even at max resolution. It's really strange...

Maybe try reinstall the nVidia 3D Stereoscopic driver will work:

    1: Insert drivers DVD

2: Browse the disk and go to: Software>nVidia>nVidia_Stereoscopic_3D_Driver>Win7-32_Win7_64 and double click StereoEIS.exe.

I am pretty sure it's just some software or driver settings.

My 3D stopped working for some reason (like, the emitter wouldnt turn on - the output was weird and red...) So, I removed the nVidia drivers, both of them, and reinstalled from the CD. Made it all good again.

    Hope that helps!

Also, I find when using the screen in 120hz mode, I get some flickering, like intermittently, not sure why or if its a problem. It's fine in 60hz mode. This is on Windows 7. Doesn't bother me but just something I noticed and wondering if anyone else has it also!

I am really hoping that this is a great product! My hope is sustained by the fact that if this little beauty delivers people previously complaining about this will be too busy enjoying the laptop and won't have time for these forums. I really hope that we get some really positive feedback on this soon. Well just as soon as someone can tear themselves away from gaming.

Your issue is probably a driver related one.

FFXIV would not even run on a G73JH with the original stock drivers, and it got a lot better with newer driver releases.

These brick & mortar stores do not bother to update drivers and things, they just open up the system and turn it on in its factory state.

I'm angry at myself for not even considering that. I'm going to pop in there next week and see if they'll let me update the drivers first. Thank you!
