I just got it set up and it does have a Blu Ray Burner and the Hybrid HDDs. It also has the ROG Laser Mouse.
I'm new to the Hybrid Hard Drives and I'm hoping someone can tell me why the split the hard drives into (4) Separate Partitions. I have C: Labeled OS 80.3GB Free of 116Gb, D: Data 327GB free of 327GB, F: SData1 232GB free of 232GB, G: SData2 232GB free of 232GB. Is there a certain drive I should install my programs to like my MMO's and other games?
The screen is nice BTW and it's quiet!

Those prices are great.
Still happy with my purchase from Xoticpc.
Great service, live chat help, upgrades, and quality assurance test. -
Hey guys, I've been following your discussion closely, and am grateful that many of my questions were answered by you guys.
I know that this is a gamer's dream laptop and most are interested in the gaming performance aspect of the laptop. Does anyone in this group work in 3D graphics or animation and uses 3D packages like 3D studio Max, or Maya?
I'm considering this laptop for gaming and work, and am curious if anyone had any luck utilizing this laptop while in 3D mode and using 3D animation software. Does Maya support this functionality? Any input appreciated. thanks.
Also, has it been put to rest if this laptop can display full HD in 3D mode? -

thank you so much!
appreciate it !! -
Finally had chance to gave a play. WoW looks great in 3D even if it's a bit tricky to target and read chat, I played it in full HD with high to ultra settings and all very smooth. I've not had any problems with keyboard, touch pad or speakers, maybe they fixed it all on the 3de. As for size, opts only about as big as my old 17" vaio. As many have said the screen is a delight. Also very happy with my 128 gb SSD.

hey guys i am wondering if we replace asus g73jw-a1's screen with the 3de's can we use 3d function too?
and the other thing is the screen on this site http://www.screencountry.com/index.php?section=products&model=G73JH&brand=ASUS&size=
which is 1920x1080 matte one is 120hz? -
From what I understand on the screen, they don't have FHD 120hz screens available yet.
To get the 3d, I think you need 120hz screen, emitter, and a the glasses. -
so when the 120 hz of this screen out, we can replace and use 3d
i know the rest of needs,emitter and glasses(nvidia 3d vision kit) -
Read few pages back.
I believe it wont be out until next year. -
i just wanted to know if its possible.so its ok

Hi everyone, I want to know if anyone else that owns this is having problems with keys not being entered when you press them? It's happening quite a bit when I type fast.
Was anyone missing the microfiber cleaning cloth and storage pouch for their Nvidia 3D Vision Glasses? Mine did not come with them and Nvidia was not much help with getting them.
Besides those problems the computer runs great and stays real cool. 3D is great. I was playing full HD in 3D with Star Trek Online and it ran smooth. I'm very happy with this computer. -
You need to take this up with you retailer that sold you the laptop -
-

-
Thanks Ken. Nvidia should have did a better job with their packaging and not list that has items included. When I contacted them they told me all of the glasses ship with the microfiber cloth and case. Now I know they don't.
I'll just pick up one online. Now everyone else knows they aren't missing the items and can get them. -

Btw, I'll be posting a review after my exams if anyone is still holding out from purchasing the unit. I've been extremely busy with exams and massive amounts of essays/assignments, so I can't really spare a few hours to do it until a week or so.
--
Oh, and my backlight keyboard no longer functions and I was reading some of you guys updated your drivers. I went to the Asus official webside and grabbed the ATK one for the JW, but after rebooting it, it didn't reactivate - Is that what you guys did? People had the same issue with the G53JW too, but they fixed it. I assume my recent windows update was the cause of this -

Hello, First off, I apologize, I am more than a reader than a writer and as such I have only now created an account. I have been watching this thread with great interest. I would like to thank Ken Lee / GentechPC, Voodooi as well as all the other contributors.
My laptop is trash and it is time for a replacement and this is the system that I keep returning to. I am not much of a gamer, and the 3D is not a large motivation but I love the large screen, as well as the BR-Burner, 8GB loads of storage etc. What I am looking for is speed, silence, cool running and did I mention speed!!
I guess my comment / question is simple. Why has there been no "Unboxing", "written" or "Video" review? I realize this is a fairly new system, however most of the time, once these start to ship, the first thing someone does is post a video, or rate the machine somewhere. I realize Voodooi has exams and has promised to post something in a couple of weeks, so thank you; but I'm sure your not the only one that has received their new unit. Consider that the distributer usually always like to be the first to provide this type of content. Is it a "Buy", "Might Buy", or "Run like hell". Even a scale of 1 to 10 might help.
Any Ideas?
Thanks -
If you want a killer workstation laptop, the G73JW-3DE is a nice choice since it has a 120Hz screen, and from what Ken has shown, is a high-quality panel. It can be upgraded to 16GB RAM if you need to. If the i740QM is not good enough for you, then you can upgrade it to a 940XM Extreme chip, and after overclocking it with ThrottleStop, she should be showing performance enjoyed by desktop i7 owners. (I believe one person mentioned performance comparable with a i7-950)
-
Pros:
Screen is beautiful. Excessively bright when not in 3D.
Was worried about the 3D, but it is just amazing. Very bright and clear.
Its quiet, but not as quiet as everybody makes it out to be. I just did a 4 hour presentation with it, and it was more than acceptable.
It is VERY cool running under some extensive CAD software use for long periods of time. I will test it in a game when I get time.
The wireless is excellent, I don't know why anybody ever complained about it. It is just the stock card and performed great in even the lowest signal areas on my campus.
I ordered and payed for the version without blu-ray, but they forgot to remove it, so.... thumbs up there I guess!
Battery life is 2 hours. I don't know if that is a pro or a con. I would say pro considering I was expecting 1.2 hours.
Put the sound equalizer on Voice (+ 62, 125) or close to it anyway, and the sound is AMAZING!
Cons:
Like everybody says, the color is WAY off. Way too much blue but all I did was change that in the windows settings under Display and now its great. (edit: I found out that the blue actually makes the colors better when the glasses are on, but still it was way overkill at stock settings)
So much crap preinstalled, but I'm afraid to clean install if the new drivers are not working for 3D.
Missing keystrokes (like all G73 models)
Backlight under the screen is very dim (don't be fooled by the flashy pictures)
Backlit keyboard is cheap looking. For example, the spacebar only has lighting around the corners and sides, not the middle.
I'm adding more to this as I go...

Ok, so I ran into a problem just now that is apparently common. I tried to run a game in 3D and it just randomly shut off and said that my display was not 3D capable.
I just opened up the Nvidia Control Panel -> Stereoscopic 3D -> Set up stereoscopic 3D and under 3D stereoscopic display type, changed it to Asus 120 Hz 3D. Now it works again. I also changed the refresh rate of the display under Change Resolution to 120 Hz. I don't know if that helped.
New problem. Another common one too.
The keyboard backlight will stop working as soon as you run updates. Go here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx and download ATK (2)
Version V1.0.0007
That fixed it.
Ok, I noticed that infamous popping sound from the speakers playing music.
I removed the RealTek HD Audio, and all is well. It sounds amazing if you get the equalizer right from windows. -
Hello, Just ordered my G73jw-3de. It will be interesting to see how long it takes. Being from Ontario, I ordered it from a Canadian On-line retailer. Very hesitant of that, but I guess we will see how it goes. Scariest part maybe that they said it was in stock. Yes, thats what I said - 3d and in stock. Anyways, seeing will be believing, and I am not likely going to hold my breath. Once I see a tracking number from the shipping company, I will get a little more excited.
As far as the in stock part is concerned ...I was told that Asus does not allow Canadian retailers to customize the units, so out of the box is what I get. This may be the reason they are able to have supply.
Cheers!!! -
The only thing I would recommend is upgrading the wireless card, which I should of done when I ordered but I was in a rush. -
First post, I ended up buying my 3de after following this excellent thread - thanks to all contributors.
First off I will say that I am very very pleased with the machine in all aspects. This is the first laptop of this spec / league that I have purchased and I am impressed on all fronts.
Build quality is very good everything is solid. Not seeing any missing keystrokes either unlike some - Im quite a fast typist. Machine is very stable, no crashing, lockups or anything of that nature. I never overclock my systems though.
Very impressed with how quiet this machine is, especially so under load - you can barely hear it when its idling either. I have seen other gaming laptops by the likes of MSI, Acer etc and they sound like a hairdryer in comparison they are so loud. This runs very cool - its not all marketing hype!
Agree to much junk / bloatware installed out of the box - I uninstalled most of it rather than doing a clean install. 3d and normal gaming was performing so well I didn't see the point.
I noticed some mentioned struggling to get the 3d working, I dont know if they changed drivers or something but I just ticked enable 3d in Nvidia control panel put on the glasses and its working perfectly in all games I try. Valve Source titles like L4D2, TF2 play at 1080p in 3d with no lag at all. 3d is very impressive, excellent sense of depth - even old games like Trackmania look stunning in stereoscopic. Graphics and 3d are so sharp its stunning - the screen is glorious. Well done Asus on that front.
Sound is nice and loud - could do with more bass for sure but I use headphones most of the time and that is really picking.
Obviously newer titles like bad company etc you need to lower your expectations on a machine like this - if you want 3d just lower the resolution or play it standard on higher settings. If you demand HD then I think you need to consider spending alot of extra $$$ and go for some crazy sli type clevo based machine. Just because the laptop card has a similar name to its desktop counterpart doesn't mean it will perform the same. Even high end desktops fail to run all things on ultra after all!
I would highly recommend this machine to anyone - its excellent value for money.
I got it for £1200 getting it from the US - not bad when the standard JW goes for £1800 over here. Crazy money.
Overall - 9.6 out of 10 -
I've been searching all over the place for a decent gaming rig under $1800, and I finally found it with the G73JW-3DE.
Powernotebooks, I figured out, is having a sort of "liquidation" sale, where they had an overstock of G73's and G53's, so they're dropping the total price by a few hundred dollars, I guess I got lucky!
For people who haven't made a decision yet, the G73 series as a whole (especially the 3DE) is really the best bang for your buck in terms of a gaming rig. The cooling system allows massive OC'ing, and the GTX460 is a way of ensuring solid directx11 gameplay for years to come.
I think Powernotebooks is continuing the price drop until they sold all the extra G73-series laptops they have. o.o
Anyway, I'll be posting benchmarks and more info soon! -
I started off with a G73JH and returned it because of audio issues. I then bought a G73JW-A1 (which I'll be selling soon) and love everything about it except for the backlight bleed when the screen is black. I briefly tried the G53JW-3DE but returned it because the screen quality (both resolution and viewing angles) was not close to that of the G73JW 1080p models. Now I've had the G73JW-3DE for a couple of days and I'm in love. For me this is the perfect machine - it has everything. The matte 1080p 120Hz screen is amazing. It is by far the nicest LCD I've ever seen and there is almost none of the graineyness that often comes with a matte screen. The 3D is great but even without it this would be my favorite laptop of all time and I've had dozens of them.

Can't wait to get mine.
The wait is killing me! -
I can't way to play with it.
I hope im getting it before christmas so i can use some days of and install some good games.

I'm curious
What swayed you away from the Sager that you were considering ? -
I have to agree with everyone else that owns the G73JW-3DE. It is a great laptop for the price. I'm very happy with mine except for the missing keystrokes but hopefully a fix will come that doesn't require disabling the touchpad.

I haven't been able to get mine to miss keystrokes yet.

Thanks! -

Okay, so, I'm in "awe".
Yesterday at noon, I posted that I had just ordered my G73jw-3de.
In that post , I stated that I would not hold my breath for the delivery of the unit, even though the company said it was in stock. Something just said to me that it would be too good to be true. Especially when I have read other post of people ordering in Nov. and they still have not seen the unit...............Well, turns out, I have to eat my words.
Yesterday afternoon 12:15 - email - order confirmed,
12:30 - email order processed;
1:30ish e-mail - order sent to shipping for delivery;
4:30 pm e-mail - order status on hold for pre, special or back ordered, (this is where I thought I was screwed)
6:30 pm - email -part order shipped via UPS tracking # ???? (laptop only, extra adapter to follow),
I PICKED IT UP THIS MORNING FROM UPS @ 8:30 am - less than 24 hours later. WOW!!!!! To boot, I live 3 hours north of the supplier (Markham ON, actually shipped from Mississauga), Whe have had 3-4 feet of snow in the last couple of days and the roads have been closed. Thanks to Voodooi, as I took heed of his comments on how UPS would just leave it on my door step. That would have been "great" -12 degrees c and the box siting in snow for 10 hours. I'd a been pi$$'d.
As far as the quick turn around...this might have been because of the order was for a stock unit, no customization, as I was told that was not possible in Canada (prohibited by ASus).
Sorry but I have not opened the boxI had to go to work. BUT TONIGHT!!!!!!! Then I will be able to make sure everything is in tact.
@gentechPC - Thanks Ken for all of you advice and forum comments on the unit, It really helped...and for what it's worth, If i'd lived in the US, I would have got from you, but was told the shipping would cost $60, the duties would have be $230 and then if there was an issue I would need to send it back and forth. Sorry.
next business day... too which I responded, "Your probably right, but all
the same, This guy has been so good, I wouldn't be surprised to hear from
him shortly"... not to disappoint, his response arrived less that 10
minutes later.
I will re-iterate, this is my first experience dealing with them, and it still may be a little early to tell, but so far, things have been great. Hopefully I have not spoken to soon.
Cheers!
Before I open the box...any advice, especially regarding the set up of the hard drives would be appreciated. I have never had multiple hard drives, let alone ssd hybrids. To be truthful, I'm not even sure I understand what partitioning is, or does. I guess what I would really like to know the same thing as "Nightman" (Dec 9th). Where should I store my programs, vs where should I put my data ( downloads / media / docs) -
I just ordered mine about 2hrs ago from a local dealer. Air ship so he said it should get here tomorrow. Stock no other options. Would have loved it with some options but justonmore said. after shipping and boarder fees. would have been a lot more. I can always change things later. bought it on my visa so i get a 3rd yr warranty
at least the credit card is good for something other then putting me in debth lol
Cant wait. -
anybody has comment on 3de's webcam? is there lag similar to the non-3d jw version?
-
Hmm, I was looking at this laptop on bhphotovideo.com and it says it comes with one 500 gb 7200 rpm drive and two 256 gb solid state drives.
That doesn't sound right to me at all. Can anyone comment? Is that indeed one of the configurations? Would that be a better configuration than the stock hybrid drives? -
Factory spec is two 500gb hybrid sata drives 7200rpm. There are two hdd bays on this laptop.
Some people swap out their primary for an ssd and leave the other for data. -
