"Storage is handled by a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive and 512GB of SSD storage, giving you ample space for games and media."
    link

Thats hard to believe just from judging from the prices of such SSDs. The laptop would cost well over 2k it those come with it.
On the other hand, it wasn't just a misunderstanding; those would be great upgrades :D

HEllo guys, I have followed this discussion from the beginning. Now I will go to order one too.

Just one doubt: which one is better between these two wifi cards

    Intel Ultimate-N 6300 802.11 a/b/g/n Wireless LAN (with 3rd antenna)

    or

    Intel Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250?

    Thank you for replying.

Fom what I know the 6300 is the best WiFi card at the moment. But 6250 also has WiMax, if you have any use for it.

picked up the new lappy today and i am in love. took a long long time to make some back up disks and i tried a duel layer dvd but it only put on 4gb oh well.
But i installed wow and my fps on ultra settings @ 1080p is about 15, on good settings they are about 50 not in a city. i read somewhere they should be about 130. that was the average. any thoughts?

Play in windowed mode full screen with vsync off :) You'll get a significant jump in FPS. Also doesn't hurt to put shadows to around med.

WoW is so old that it's more CPU intensive and GPU for everything. But you should be able to play everything on high settings.

WoW is like SC2, you can't really see the difference between high and ultra visually.

In WoW that's a negative. 3D only works in fullscreen mode.

I tried 3D in Need4Speed: Hot Pursuit today and the driving is so fast it's quite difficult to play in 3D. Although it looks alright, I just can't win the first place prises in 3D :p Maybe I have to get used to it, but I prefer my 3D experience in slower paced games. Can't get any faster than 350mph chasing 5 bad guys driving into incoming traffic in the dark while it's raining and avoiding spike strips lol :p It's a damn good game though! So far FPS-3D seems to be the best experience for me.

I seem to be having a problem with the Asus Live Update Utility. On day 1, I turned on this brand new computer, and I've got requests to update software on every single thing installed on the computer. Everything has gone fine, except the Asus Live Update Utility. It thinks I need to Update - AI Recovery (3,733 KB), SmartLog... (7,510 KB), and Asus Spl... (14,881 KB). For these being such wimpy small files, it takes forever to download them. I tried just downloading the AI Recovery, and it was going for a solid 2 hours and the status bar, was maybe 10% done. In that time, I downloaded over 2 GB of data no problem. Does anyone else have this problem? A solution?

I have the same issue. I just close it and don't bother. At one point, I let it update for 5-6hrs and it was 25% complete. Doesn't seem important, so I'm just disregarding it :p

I can't even get mine to work since day one. Anytime I try to open it, a windows error says that it's not responding and I just close the program. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it with the same outcome just took it off the computer now.

Do any of you that have this have any problems with the missing keystrokes or know what causes it and if it can be fixed? I'd appreciate any help with this.

Apparently it can be fixed with a BIOS Beta update? I too am occasionally missing keystrokes but since BIOS update is the fix, I'm going to do it with an Asus tech over the phone in the next few days. G53JW had no keystroke issues but this one does.

I'm fearful of doing a BIOS update solo, so I'll just get a tech to guide me step-by-step. There's a Gary Keys post sticked about it.

I haven't rushed to fix it b/c office has an auto-correct feature and when I type during a game or MSN, people can still understand what I say lol.

Not sure. I'll be posting my outcome with the Asus tech via phone. Also, my turbo button stopped working for the last two days (the one betwen keyboard lights and 3D enabled). Gonna call about that too lol. It's like everytime I fix a little thing, another thing starts and all I really do is homework/little gaming.

I think it only happened after i did a win 7 update but i cant be sure on that, but after the reinstall of that atp prog it hasnt happened since. Im at work right now so i cant look up the file. i was surprised to get on here :)

Until all the driver update kinks are resolved with this unit, I am looking into getting rid of the pre-installed bloatwares manually for now. Does anyone know which ones are safe to remove (without triggering the need for clean install?)

Thanks so much, yes the drive number is st95005620as so I guess that answers that. Can I then assume ( because it does not show in "my computer" as such) that there is no option to specify what files you want to put on the hybrid... Is this correct? Or does the drive management system allocate the hybrids resourses?

New problem...I have a USB flash drive that does not seem to be docking into the My Computer. The flash drive light is flashing like the computer is trying to access it, but it never shows up. Also, when I started in Safe Mode, it did dock, but then I still couldn't access files on it. Not sure if this is a Safe Mode feature where it is limiting my access to the File System, or another symptom of the same problem that I am having not in Safe Mode.

    Update:
Actually it seems to work fine in Safe Mode. I tried again.

    Update 2:
Weird, it seems to have just locked up the whole computer. So, I restarted in Safe Mode, checked to make sure it was docking. Restarted back to regular Windows, then 1 more Restart for good measure, plugged in the thumb drive, and it worked. With all these restarts I'm sure happy to have the Hybrid HDDs

The drive automatically adjusts the most common used data to the ssd part of the drive , it learns as it go's, and will speed up over time
    This is not user adjustable
I have the same drive in 250GB capacity
Asus made and an excellent choice when they provided these high performing drives on this model

Hello, This may sound like a novice question but (as I am one) I was hoping someone could help me out. On all my previous computers I have had one hard drive, (c :), now with this rig, it looks like I have 4 drives. I assume this means that the 2 x 500 gb have been partitioned. Currently it has the following ...

    1)...OS (C: ) 116 gb (80 gb free)
    2)...Data (D: ) 327 gb (327 gb free)
    3)...SData1 (F: ) 232 gb (232 gb free)
    4)...SData2 (G: ) 232 gb (232 gb free)

I am guessing, but how can I confirm that the c: and d: are actually one of the drives while f: and g: is the other?

Should I be installing all of my software/programs to the OS c: drive ? and if so, what happens if the 80 gb of free space is not enough? Can this partition be adjusted?

    Thanks so much!

HEllo, everyone, thank you for answering my previous question. I will order tomorrow, but before, I want to know, is the hybrid drive with 4 gb SSD necessary? Because I don't find this very useful. Windows system files are much bigger than 4 gb, I don't even talk about all other softwares(3ds max, maya, photoshop...)
Unless that I make a mistake about how that hybrid driver works, I think that it is better for me that I chose cheap 500 GB basic hard disk, and then buy full SSD disk and install that myself when there is some sales on newegg or other site.
I will do the same for the wifi card. I will buy Intel N6300 Ultimate later on other siteweb.

What do you think? Please let me know your opinions. Thank you very much.

You can use the Windows Disk Management snap-in to view the relationship between physical disks and logical volumes (drive letters). To open the disk management snap-in, click the Start button and type "disk management" than click the link "Create and format harddisk partitions" (should be at the top of the list).

I won't tell you where to put your data, but you should be able to use the utility mentioned above to adjust your drive volumes the way you'd like :)

    Agree
The 4gb of flash speeds up the boot but a ssd if you can afford it will yield the best performance

The ssd is smart. It only stores the information you require most often.
    It does this automatically.

    Hello guys,

I have a very strange issue with my G73-3DE - it suddenly turns off, without any warning or error, as if the power was cut.

So far, this has occured only when playing World of Warcraft, and just once when I was at desktop and hit the overdrive button.

Now, the first reason that comes to mind would be to blame it on a heat issue. BUT, the notebook sat there a whole night with 3DMark 2006 looping test runs as well as several hours with both Prime95 AND Furmark running without any issues and temperatures were well within acceptable ranges all the time, so I do not think it can be blamed on simple overheating.

Still, the issue comes up regularily when playing WoW, which is much less demanding on the hardware. Unfortunately, there is no specific condition when it occurs, it's just random, from 5 minutes into the game to 1+ hours.

I am running at a very slight overclock of 720 mhz gpu and 1300 mhz memory, which is well below the ocs reported by other users.

I'm at a complete loss as to what the reason could be and would loathe to send it to service just to get it back with a statement that all is fine because they couldn't reproduce the error condition.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Finally got my laptop and I have a few complaints.... I love it no doubt but have some complaints :)
    - The roxio cineplayer doesn't play commercial bluray (aka original movies) so you have to spend $80 on the powerdvd ultra 3d mark 2 software. Why give us useless software? Lots of bloatware too. Damn it!
    - call of duty black ops in 3d doesn't work. Needs a driver fix or game patch. Works great in 2d and high settings.
    - this was mentioned previously, keyboard drivers need to be reinstalled because function keys and turbo button stops working after 1 or2 restarts.
    - keyboard doesn't light up until windows starts and there is no option in the boot menu to enable it. I checked. If anyone has a solution, please let me know.

On the other hand, age of the empires 3 looks cool in 3D. 3d movies look nice. Gives you a headache sometimes and also freezes up the application if you try to switch between 3d and 2d ( not using the 3d mode button but via options)

Overall it's a great laptop which needs a lot of minor software and driver updates. Which will hopefully happen soon.

    Update:
-Tested Arkham Asylum in 3D and there are a lot of flickering shadows...gives me a headache.
    - 3d bluray works great with powerdvd. Make sure you get the ultra version. Other versions don't support any commercial bluray.
    - restore backup requires 5 DVDs

I got my g73jw-3de from BH and i notice a few problems.
    1- 3d mark 11 , it runs in a square on midlle of screen.(bug?)
2- I could not update drivers from asus (265 drivers), 3d stop working. Cant install new nvidia drivers (260.99), even 260.63 does not work.(i see in a thread that you can install in the g73jw-a1 with no problems).
3- SC2 full hd - ultra settings , some freezing issues (like 35 avg fps and in some situations fps can drop to 0 and back to 30 again). It happens on 4x4 and 3x3 on midlle or late game.
4- World of warcraft - same problem, game random freezes for 1 second.
I guess this 261.14 driver from asus is causing my problems, and i hope they provide new drivers soon.
Notice some spikes on DPC latency.

I just recently received my G73JW-3DE from XoticPC. I'm trying to get the 3D to work but have had no luck. I went to the Start Menu and click on Enable 3D. The NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL comes up and under Steroschopic 3D I click enable 3d. It takes me to the screen that tells me to turn on my glasses and then look at the two picture and click what I see. After that It tells me that the hardware fail. I can't get 3d to work. I try to update the driver but when I do on NVIDIA website it says "If you own a G73W don't update and keep the driver that comes with your notebook. Does anybody else have this problem?

I did a complete system restore to make sure my laptop was the way it was when I first got it which is 5 hours ago. I do the setup, it tells me to turn my glasses on and then look at the two image. My emitter turns green. My glasses turn green for about 30 seconds. I look at the image where it tells you to close left eye and then right eye and click what I see. I see the Octagon with the Triangle and I click that. The next screen says "Hardware test fail" During the process my emitter was on and my glasses were on too. I don't understand whats wrong.

I call NVIDA and they say I needed to charge my glasses for 8 hours. Voodooi how long did you charge your glases for before using them? And what happens when you charge your glasses. For mine a blinking orange light comes up. How do you know if gasses are fully charge.
I think the problem is that my glasses won't sync with the emitter. I can open 3d images, turn my glasses on, look at the image with and without the glasses and it looks the same.

When you press the button on the glasses, it should stay green for 30secs. So looks like you need to charge your glasses. 1hr or so of charging should be good enough for 30mins i think When the glasses are on, everything will look a little dim. Also when it is sync'd with the emitter, the green light above the screen will be let. When everything works you won't see both the triangle and octagon. You will see only on per eye. Good luck.

Great. After shutting it down and then coming back to use this computer, i notice the backlit keyboard does not light up anymore. The overclock button no longer works and the 2d-3d button does not work anymore too. All my F keys no longer work. THis laptop is stressing me out and giving me so much problem I wish there was a thread call "Solve your G73JW-3DE problems here.

I charged mine for about 2 hours. Mine blinks green which means they're activated and will remain activated if the emitter is on.

As for your backlit keyboard, you have to reinstall the drivers and then once the reboot starts up, you turn the light up to max and it should work. I used the ATK drivers from the Asus website.

As for the turbo button, mine isn't working either but this is what Ken wrote to me in an e-mail:
"You might want to check the BIOS to see of overclocking is disable, also the Power4Gear softwares controls the Turbo button so you might want to try reinstall the Power4Gear."

Thanks for suggestion Voodooi. I look at the thread and the instruction are just to hard too follow. I am a complete computer noob who just wants some quality gaming. To be honest I have no idea when you say "reinstall teh drivers and then once the rebot starts up turn the light to max". I don't even know what to do with any driver at all.
My glasses charge all the way but they still won't work. I know I have bad glasses. Order mine from XoticPC. I hope if I send for RMA I don't have to send the laptop too.

Oh, you'd go at support.asus.com and fill out which laptop you have. After that, there should be a drivers list. Pick ATK and download the latest one. Install it, and reboot. Once you've rebooted, FN+F4 to turn them on (should work).

I feel your pain. A laptop should be working 100% out of the box, but instead some of us are faced with issues out of the box and it's really frustrating at times. They're all fixable, it's just as soon as you think you fix one, another pops up. I wish Asus had Alienware's next business day in-home tech warranty so a guy could of came over and did all this for me.

I still have to "fix" my missing keystrokes by doing a BIOS update with an Asus tech over the phone sometime this week probably.

G53JW had 0 issues out of the box when I had it. This one has all these annoying little things (all fixable though).

These computer have issue, but the people that get hurt the most are people like me who know nothing about computer. Lucky for there there are people like you willing help. I think it will be just sometime before I start to experience missing keystroak. Lets hope I don't

My 3D glasses are fully charge, My notebook produces 3D images but the glasses are not doing anything. I know for a fact I got bad glasses.
Thank you for helping me solve my problem.
It won't be till monday before I can call XoticPC and tell them about my glases.

Don't feel bad we all had to start somewhere when it comes to PC's. You're just a late bloomer :D But, stay in on this forum, do a little research and you will be further along then most.

Sorry about your 3DE, I just ordered mine off Xotic 2 days ago. I really hope all my equipment works. But if it doesn't I will be happy working on it to get it right. Makes me feel a little better about my purchase when I tweek it to run better. Merry Christmas!!!!

I had the same problem. Use the disk that came with the computer and install the ATK keyboard drivers. That will fix it.

Has anybody gotten bluetooth to work yet? When I click on the bluetooth under start menu nothing happens. I'm trying to install some game pad.

Got mine to work now. When I click on bluetooth at the start menu nothing happens but a small bluetooth icon pops up on the bottom right. From there I just click add device.

Ok, now this is really strange. I never got 3D to work but when I was playing Star Wars Force Unleashed 2 and error message came up. Now when I go to NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL, Steroscopic 3D is mising from the menu. What did I do to deserve this.

I would recommend installing drives from the CD again. Get ATK also installed and try using the 3D button on the keyboard. If the demo video or the sample pictures don't work with 3D after the driver update, call Asus.
