Agree, i really need a thread like this! Iam almost giving up of this laptop.
My g73jw-3de has random crashes when i play crysis warhead (maximum edition) after 10 or 20 min of game play. Iam getting a kind of "freeze" when i play other games (they dont crash like warhead). The freeze time is about 1 second, than fps continue normaly.Obs: My warhead is maximum edition version, 1.1 patched.

For those of you that have stuttering or DPC latency issues, have you tried disabling the touchpad in the BIOS or killing the synaptics processes, and disabling wireless adapters and using wired ethernet instead? Also Ruckus posted something about disabling ACPI battery, or just taking the battery out to reduce DPC latency.

Sometimes I'm playing a game and it runs perfectly. After playing it for a while I notice that it lags. I have to restart computer and then pit still lags. I have to shut down and wait a while before playing agian and it runs perfect again. Also Stereoscophic 3D under the NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL keeps on disappearing. I have to uninstall it and reinstall again using the cd. Also as I type this keys that I'm hitting are not showing up. I'm getting that missing keystroak thing now.
-
Some minutes ago my usb mouse begins to connect and disconnect like crazy and i needed a reboot to fix it.. .bad usb drivers? Thank you asus!
Is your laptop overheating? The problem of turning it down to get decent fps sounds like a temperature issue. Try reinstall S.O. by reseting to factory settings pressing f9 during boot time and see if it fixes the 3d drivers problems. -
-
Lurker here on this thread! these issues will continue to make me just that, a lurker....................
-
After reading the past couple of threads I'm glad the only problems I have, at this moment, are the missing keystrokes and I'm getting a error message regarding Stereoscopic 3D not being supported on this computer. This only happens when I go to play a game after waking my computer from Hibernating. A simple reboot fixes the problem. I'd say that problem started a week after getting the computer but the missing keystrokes are a day one issue.
-
This is 3d in its infancy guys, but i'm sure 3d will be the norm (hopefully) in 2-3 years once all the kinks/bugs are gone and when the gpu by that time will be able to handle 3d fluently at high fps/resolution

***Missing Keyboard Stroke Fix***
Since it requires a BIOS Update (as per Asus tech support), they mentioned that if you as a customer do it and "brick" your laptop, you will be responsible.
What they're offering now is a free option (covered through your warranty) by using Geek Squad @ Best Buy.
Basically (as per the tech), you bring your unit in, and they'll update your BIOS within 10 minutes. This is covered under your Asus warranty (as per the tech). Saves us from RMA'ing it if we mess up and "brick" it.
That is a pretty damn good option b/c I was extremely nervous of doing it on my own.

*Sigh* A new issue. My touchpad stops working and returns 30 min later. Maybe the BIOS update will fix it once I get it done but man...it's endless little things that drive me insane. As I'm typing this it died yet again. Asus really needs to get their act together with their 2k USD laptops. Not even my 500$ Toshiba I owned for 4 years had these issues (it died on the 4th year, but still). -
Voodoi do you have to mail in that Notebook waranty card to get those services? And beside mailing in that warranty card can you register it online? Can you post how it went after you get your BIOS updated.
-
I have painstakingly read this entire thread and think this is the new laptop I want to purchase.
So. How the hell do I do that?
I literally have never had so much trouble trying to find an item to buy.
I'm from the UK, so I need it shipped here. I need a trusted seller who wont rip me off and I need it to work well on UK power supplies and covered via warrenty. The only thing I have found is this and this.
In british pounds, its seems to be cheaper through gentech, but i'm not sure about shipping, and I obviously have no experience with the seller. Ebay I sort of trust, but you can never be sure.
And the biggest thing? They all say it's not released yet? How are so many people ordering and receiving this laptop when Gentech says they wont have it till Jan and the ebay listing doesn't even have an ETA.
Can someone pleaseee help decipher this mess!
I would truly appreciate any help. It's a lot of money to part with.
Thanks in advance, -
@sylphyaj
I'll post my results. Apparently all the Geek Squad asked for when I wanted to confirm the free BIOS update over the phone is the sales receipt of the Asus laptop.
@Moorish
Order US. I remember calculating it for a UK resident a month ago and even after taxes the unit was cheaper. I used GenTechPC (they ship to UK) but there's 3 other resellers that lurk these forums as well (PowerNoteBooks/Xotic/BTO). Oh their out of stock until early January, so you might want to order right now so your chances become greater. The reason is because their stock was depleted and that's when it's getting replenished. Shipping is 150$~ USD I believe for international. -
Voodoi, When you use your 3D glasses do they appear in device manager? I'm still trying to get 3D to work. Its been 3 days now and no luck. I have set up for an RMA and waiting for a response from XoticPC.

Quick question:
Does the g73jw 3de automatically lower resolution to 1366x768 ? So its just full hd in 2d mode?
I read in some other forum that it can only do 1366x768 in 3d -
-
Great! Thanx
-
Any of the reseller's on here guarantee I'll get one with a pre-order? By that I mean their first shipment they get in January.
-
Just yesterday I was using my webcam and it was working without any lag but now its lagging. Does anybody have that problem too. Also when My laptop is not plug in all my games lag, but when my laptop is plug in everything runs great. Does anyone know how to change the options so that the laptop does not lower its performance when its not plug in
-

Sylphyaj,
You might try to change your battery setting to power4gear high performance. The natural tendency of the software when you unplug from power is to downclock your GPU to save on battery life.(especially if it is in battery saver/entertainment mode) This is more than likely what is happening. Although when you do this I wouldnt expect more than 45min of battery life if you are playing a game.
The easiest way to change power modes is to open the power4gear program and choose the high performance option. You can also click on your battery icon on the bottom right side of your taskbar and choose more power options. Once the next screen opens choose high performance.
Hopefully that helps. -
I love this notebook. I mean that we should not leave the asus update download ?

At this time we have lifted the Pre Order. With recent shipments just received we are presently fulfilling all pre orders and taking new orders.
We will have additional units next week with ASUS's upcoming shipment.

To the retailers:
Any full review on this laptop be up soon?
I believe many of us have been waiting for it. -
At GenTech they sell a Asus WiCast Wireless HDMI 1080p. It will be nice if this wireless can send a 3d picture to a 3d tv or monitor...
I just visit the Asus site and the refreshing rate is only 60 Hz so no 3D. -

WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
It's possible that the next shipment of the G73JW-3DE will be the last and all future deliveries will be a G73SW-3DE?
At some point the factory will need to switch production to models with Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs,DDR3 1600 and new chipsets?
QM67 or HM65 chipset?
I hate to order something that will be outdated by the time it reaches my front door especially if some of the reported G73JW-3DE issues have been fixed.
I'm also hoping for a GTX 500M series instead of the GTX460M.Probably a few months down the road in a model refresh. -
Well i solved the wow and other games "lag" problem. I notice that when that 1 second lag happen the hdd starts to spin, so the guilty is the seagate momentus XT.
I uninstalled power4hybrid, and set windows power plan to high perfomance and set to never shut down hdd in advanced settings. The problem continues, because seagate momentus has a bad firmware. I downloaded the HDDScan software and turned off APM(advanced power managment) from both HDDs. All lag/freeze problems stoped. -
When I called about this issue, Asus blamed it on my BIOS and then they told me I had a faulty hard drive and to RMA it lol. I'd love to make a parody/skit of Asus tech support one day.
Great findI'll have to test it out once I have time for games.

Voodooi, did you get a chance to take your laptop to GeekSquad to update the BIOS?

-
Hey guys I got the laptop!
Do you guys know how long does it take for the glasses to be fully charged? -
@MustangDude
Not yet. I'm aiming for tomorrow evening. It's about 30-40 minutes (one way) away so that's why I've been putting it off alot this week -
How to turn on camera?
I installed Virtual Camera. I can see that its on the taskbar.
But, where's the program?
FIX: installed Lifeframe -
@Mindtilt
Bah, I followed what you did and it did reduce the spikes/freezes by some, it's still very present. I quickly tested a couple games before work this morning only to find almost the same result (it went from 4-5sec lag spikes to 1-2sec). I'm also having to alt+f4 sometimes before of complete freezes. -
-
Sorry to read about people having problems with some lagging in games etc.
I'ves een this on other (cheaper) laptops with slow hdd's such as UK spec MSI with 5400rpm drives in.. I have got to be honest, Im using my 3DE straight out of the box and I have been playing loads of games over the past month have had not one lag spike at all from the Seagate hybrid HDDs. Runs fine.
Mine is totally standard spec. Hope you get it sorted, Happy New Year by the way! -
Wow I was just literally logging on to ask about the aforementioned "lag spikes". I was going to ask if it was worth getting a ssd for the main and a 750g 7200 for the second, if the new 500 hybrid were causing lag.
A problem like that would ruin the rig for me.
Has anyone got any benchmarks (even just windows ones) for the 73jw (3de or not) with normal magneto 7200 rpm vs hybrid 500gb vs 128 ssd?
THAT would be really awesome to see. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There won't be any difference in the Windows Experience Index...they will both score 5.9. However an SSD will score 7.7~7.8
-
Here is a topic of people with same problems:
Momentus XT APM spindown feature causes "lag spike... - Seagate Community Forums
Here is a link to firmware update
Momentus XT Firmware Update
The hdd model that g73jw-3de has is ST95005620AS and the firmware is SD22
The update link is for the new firmware SD24.
I hope this update fixes the APM problem i ll try do it later, but i dont know if its going to work because i read this(on the first link i posted):
"This update is only accessible for non-OEM drives. Unless you bought your Momentus XT drive retail, the update will most probably not work. Contact your OEM for more information on any firmware updates. "
Maybe the update wont work because we have an OEM hdd, but i think it worth give a try.
One more thread about the update:
http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentus-XT-Momentus-and/Firmware-update-Momentus-XT/td-p/56023/page/19
Some people confirmed that the problem stoped with this last firmware update. -
Update did not work for me. During the update process, it denied to apply the update because of some firmware mismatch, even though the drive was recognized correctly.
-
"I should of downgraded the hard drives to 7200's. I would of saved over 100$ and would have avoided these ridiculous lag issues."
My review of the unit would be extremely bias (in a negative way) b/c of these countless problems, so I'm going to hold off until I get everything resolved (keystrokes, touchpad, hard drive and VGA drivers). I was a 100% happy and problem-free when I had the G53, but this unit is the total opposite.
The update did not work for me either.
May I suggest to you new buyers to downgrade your hybrids to 7200's (resellers offer this option). None of us users have working fixes and Asus will just ask us to RMA it, which would take 3 weeks.
500GB 7200rpm SATA-300 II 16MB : -$62
500GB Seagate XT 7200RPM SSD Hybrid Drive
Perhaps the resellers could then send these hybrid drives back to Asus and get a refund/exchange for their stock.
I called Asus and they're just requesting RMA'ing, and I am NOT going without a laptop for 3 weeks - especially with my semester starting in a week.
You would think for a 2k gaming laptop Asus would of given a few dozen test units to people who game regularly/heavily to review prior to its release, because these problems would of been noticed. -
We'll at least the information seems to be slowly pooling together so new buyers like myself can at least get a better heads up as to the current state of drivers and the like.
Damn, I guess I will save the 62 bucks and put it towards a 128gb ssd for the main. I have a ungodly amount of externals lying around, including a 750gb usb3 drive, so I think i can stomach lower the size of the disks, if it means I don't get any (or as many) problems.
V, I thought the keystroke thing had a BIOS fix? And what are the VGA issues? Also (going from Mindtilt's link) have you RAID'd your drives? Apparently un-RAID'd hyrbirds don't do this (in desktops).
Why do I even still want this laptop....:-D It's pretty horrific that i'm basically learning a whole new (tech) language just to buy the laptop I want and keep it working as it bloody well should. -
SD22 had spin down issues. SD23 fixed this but then no spin down at all. SD24 supposedly allows for proper AAM and I think APM control again.
I think the issue is the FW update is meant for Retail not OEM drives. If I remember correctly the SD23 had the FW upgrade issue as well but if you search Seagate forums for the SD23 update there was a fix to get it too work. -
The VGA driver issue is a few pages back. Basically if you update your drivers to the latest, it conflicts with the stereoscopic 3D and 3D doesn't work properly. I'm still using the stock drivers until it's fixed so my 3D can run properly. Games still run on ultra (all of them) so it's not a huge deal yet.
I'll see if I can find more info on the hard drives, but I'm getting pretty sick and tired of spending full days learning and reading how to fix components that should of been working flawlessly out of the box lol.
In the last 3-4 months I've learned an incredible amount of tech information as well
Update on the HD Firmware:
If we do find one, apparently there's a chance we could lose all our data, so we'd have to back it up and it was said we could potentially "brick" the HD too...so we'll have to be careful+backup all our stuff. -
Ah yeah I remember the VGA issue. So far my notes are as follows:
1) Don't update anything under any circumstance.
2) You need to update a lot of bits for it to work (yes i get the ironic conflict).
3) Don't buy the hybrids, get an ssd and magneto for second.
4) Don't get it repasted as that could be worse, unless it runs hot, then repaste it yourself. Which still might not work.
5) This will be an obsolete model in a few months, so get saving for a new one anyway.
Awesome! Can't wait for it to arrive :-D -
