    Awesome!!

The VBios isn't even out yet and the first thing half the people on this forum want to do is tear it apart and redo it.

Great work Gary & Asus, please don't be offended if we "fix" your "fix" before you release your fix. Please continue to release more fixes for us in the future so we can "fix" them as well.

We appreciate the work you've done so far, but we'll take it from here.

I just want a working $2000 laptop. Again, it was RMA'd for a non-GSOD mobo problem, and they swapped the GPU and gave me a GSOD-ing one.

Noone is tearing apart or redoing anything. Its just a simple thing like enabling overdrive. I didnt touch any clocks or voltages or anything else. Some of us just prefer to use the ATI software to overclock instead of using 3rd party tools such as AMD GPU Clock Tool.

I sure do hope they keep working on the problems and keep releasing updates so we dont fall back to the horror their support used to be...

Do you need an up to date Bios (211) for the vBios or will it support the "stock" bios ?

And after installing the vBios, we have to install ATI 10.8 drivers?

From what i've gathered so far browsing the forums, it should support bios 209 and 211. I don't know about older versions. Since 211 is only a change in the fan speed settings (correct me if i'm mistaken) some people prefer 209 since it's quieter and they don't have overheating problems.

    Update-
    1. Karma has never treated me well. :) I am in a hold pattern right now as we are having discussions with AMD on Mafia II. I just received the game this morning and I am getting a RSOD (Red Screen of Death) on the second chapter consistently. I do not know if this due to drivers or our vBIOS update but I am returning one of the test units back to stock condition to see what happens. I will have an update in about two hours.
    2. That said we did experience two GSODs during testing last night in a couple of games that can only be replicated on a system that we intentionally borked with the keyboard light issue of all things. So we still have some one off issues to look into right now.

we should be glad someone is working on the video bios. The best thing we have to do is to wait for a fully working vbios, if you cant release today, we wait till next day or next week or even next month. Its better to wait than to be down due to a bad release that continue giving us problems.

This new issue is really interesting...200+ games are stable, but Mafia 2, chapter 2 gives RSOD... wonder if the leaked beta vBIOS gives RSOD too at chapter 2. Somehow it doesn't seem to be vBIOS problem, more like driver issue. But if it is really vBIOS problem, it is going to be nice if we need a new vBIOS every time a demanding new game comes out.

I would really like to have a talk with the gentleman who designed and approved the stock Asus Mobility 5870 vBIOS at Asus ...

    Happy Birthday dude!

    I lol'd

I lol'd even harder, and choked on my coffee :D I'd like to see you do all the "fixing" that has been underway since these problems were acknowledged by Asus. All I have seen so far is a few people trying different versions of the BIOS and catalyst drivers (big whoop I do that like 20 times a day, ps it's really hard ;)), lots of b!tching and moaning and some temperature comparisons. Now that I think about it, I haven't read of one person who cross-analyzed several games/benchmarks with every BIOS version and catalyst driver........

Cheer up buttercup, I'm sure that it is at maximum one or two days before the official release is made. Until then lets see how many people try out the leaked version and post results.

Unless I am mistaken, the 10.8's that were linked to earlier are directly from ATI, not Asus. I don't think these are the 10.8's we were promised from Asus themselves, but the standard mobility drivers that everyone gets every month.

When I downloaded them, the link path appeared to be the same as it aslways is when you download drivers from ATI's site.

Alright, the BIOS Version is 209, vBIOS is at stock and the driver comes directly from ATI.

Edit: To provide the REAL full detail: Crysis Level was "Paradise Lost", 6min. -> GSOD.

    UPDATES:

    1) After a flaming retort by yours truly to R&D (via Gary, he won't let me talk directly to the bugbears) about the drivers vs vBIOS, and a more politically edit from Gary, they were convinced that having the vBIOS fix was better than making custom monthly releases. (aka less work for them, go go inertia!)

    2) I just grabbed 10.8, so I'll test the vBIOS on that. If someone has a game request, plz holler. FYI: There will be no Asus 10.8 release. The idea here was to get a firmware fix so that we wouldn't need "Special Ed" drivers.

    3) Seeing I have the KB Lights issue, this should prove interesting

    4) Leave it to Mafia II to break something.

Well happy to hear Asus will focus on the vBios. ATi drivers do not believe was the issue to begin with, my opinion since ATi drivers work fine on Clevo, MSI and every other ATi GPU whether desktop or mobile.

BTW I did a quick google of red screen, it would seem this red screen has attacked some PS3 and Xbox 360 owners also. That's hilarious.

    My small rant on vBios

    - What is the big deal? It's not like vBios is tough thing for Asus. Asus vBios is almost ALWAYS the choice of vBios for overclockers for desktop. Almost every desktop overclocking site recommends flashing with Asus vBios for best stability, volt modding, overclocking etc etc.
    - Why is it a desktop user spends $200 on a Asus ATi HD5xxx gets the best vBios in the industry...
    - But when a notebook user spends $1,500 on Asus ATi HD5870M notebook, we get the WORST vBios in the industry
    - I mean c'mon, even your top of the line Ares doesn't cost $1,500!!!
