wowowowo!!!!!!! vBios BETA!: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu.../512887-gsod-fix-beta-vbios-update-g73jh.html
emm... wait...wait for furmark stability???? what? why? ¬¬

Just got back from exchanging my g72 at best buy. I got sooo lucky. Got the LG screen, this thing is so BEAUTIFUL compared to the AUO. Sooo happy.
-
furmark can be a marker of a problem. if issues happen with furmark quickly, then all of us MAY download the beta vbios then all of the sudden a week from now have worse gsods and all be in worse positions. we are all frustrated, i know. i am too. but games may cause gsods like furmark... imagine being in a huge SC2 game ranked etc etc GSOD
i suggest waiting for official releases.
at this point the future of our G73jh using other drivers looks bleak. I only hope that ASUS will man up and offer us some sort of replacement/rma deal -

I think it is crazy that MSI has had a perfectly performing vBIOS out for quite a while now (for the same ATI hardware) yet the eggheads over at ASUS can't get this to work without all this drama. Can't ASUS just fix the HDMI/VGA on their version and be done this?! After all these weeks the best we can hope for is to clamor for a modded unofficial vBIOS from a fellow forum poster? We are back at square one!
-
Do you know when and where is possible to download the new VBios ? Any news from the Asus manager of Asus Mr Gary ? Ciao Andrea i'm so so sad i cant play at nothing with this problem of ASUS G73
-
yeah it does suffer a bit from the "screen door" effect, but other than that it is pretty solid... at least for a cheapo BB version! -
-
-
Furmark, F Yeah!
-
I'm really unhappy now =(
I love my g73 but it has one glaring flaw if I run it on 209 and stock asus drivers.
Adobe after effects and Premiere will not launch.
They will only launch on the newer ati drivers which GSOD on me.
I hope this will be solved ,but im having my doubts. -
we can´t live witouth the hairy donut on our screens!!!

In regards to FurMark, been testing it all day and so far no problems on my end with BIOS 0209, 10.8 drivers, and the beta vBIOS.
My thoughts on Furmark are already well known but to each his own I guess.
I have engineering looking at a couple of minor updates but after reverting back to 0209 all of my problems with Mafia II and Metro 2033 went away. I think this vBIOS is solid enough to release as a beta. We will track problems and incorporate this information into the next release. In the meantime, I will create a release package with all of the files and an instruction sheet for release in the morning. -

Notebookreview forums had GSOD tonight
-
couldnt they just look into the MSI and Clevo vBIOS to see what they did right so that ASUS can do something RIGHT!
-
Gary you just went further down in my book. Are you joking posting furmark in benchmark mode? You need to run stability test to give it more than a minute to find out if it gsods. And the other members have already spoken - GSODs in games as well on this "new" vBIOS so its not just me and furmark. There is no excuse for this - Clevo and MSI have fully working vBIOS so it can be done and i dont understand how Asus still dares to afford doing this to us.
-
aaaaaaah gary has besmirched the good name of the hairy donut runing it in benchmark mode , the apocalypse is coming!
-
I wonder how did he test games...2 minutes in the game->alt+F4, restart game, 2 minutes in game->alt+F4 ...no GSOD=profit -
-
-
Yes me pointing out an obvious mistake with the testing is bad for someone like you that just wont admit theres anything wrong with his precious laptop. Do you even understand what i wrote? At least you learned how to type by repetition. Pretty good for an oaf like you.

Gary, I hope you and the engineers at Asus realize that the GSOD problem is most likely a fault with the actual vbios code, not some 'settings' that you can just tweak here and there and see if it still gsod's. People active in these forums have made quite an astonishing amount of tweaks during last 6 months, including very sophisticated ones and they do not help. The only thing that has been found to help 100% is using MSI or Clevo vbios.
Testing the proposed fixes should also be simpler than you have implied - many users on these forums get GSOD almost right away when using any newer Ati driver with 3D apps - as you can see with enough people testing a vbios candidate it is a matter of hours if not minutes when you know if certain vbios will GSOD or not.
I think you should also pay more attention to the experiences of users who have completely eradicated the gsod problem by using a vbios from different manufacturer. These MSI/Clevo vbioses NEVER EVER gsod with any drivers, so it seems that their code is ok whereas Asus's atm isn't.
I suggest you once again turn to AMD in order to find out what is really the cause and solution for these crashing problems. -
at this point just let us RMA for a crappier JW
-
-
I'm not even sure the G73JH GSOD issue will be resolved before the G73JW releases...
-
Dudes... Chill out... I had to read 15 pages and 14 of them were crap...
Give Gary a break and work TOGETHER... Why would Gary help us if we all complain and complain... If you find a bug - report in private... it will help way more the 15 pages of spam. -
Don't take me wrong, I appreciate his work, but hes not doing it because he is "nice", he has to. Or ye, he could work without feedback from us and we would maybe get an even worser GSOD vBIOS.
I wish they would just license the MSI vBIOS -_- -
is there any way to get the MSI vbios working and not loose VGA out?
-
- This isn't a simple editing of a vBios.
If you don't, then no. None of us know this, this is squarely on the shoulders of Asus. -
What happened to Gary??? he stopped posting after the vbios fiasco yesterday =(
-
Anyways, he's probably working hard to get Asus techs to do their job that they should have done almost a year ago. -
Well I have a stock video BIOS and I have NEVER GSOD's. Overnight furmark with the 10.7a's and no crashes in any game. Me thinks in not a VBIOS issue and its indeed hardware. The proof is in the pudding people. If it was VBIOS, the EVERYONE would have this issue. I have 4 friends with the G73 and non of them or me have any issues with any driver.
-
if was a hardware problem, would not work with MSI vBios...
-
But as other including me have said, myself and 2 personal friends who have G73 never had a GSOD and I know there are other prominent NotebookReview members who did not suffer them either.
And this is the problem for Asus, tracking down what is the problem. The hardware seems to work flawlessly with the vBios. The hardware on very few doesn't, but it does work with a different set of vBios.
The next problem is, the vBios is from ATi for Asus and MSI. They have to figure out why their bios is different from MSI since they are both from ATi.
I would not want to be a Asus technician/engineer right now. -
Good for you?
Unfortunately for us with units that can only perform on 209 and stock drivers are only option is to RMA,and its not certain we will even get a working unit.
It might come out worse then it was before we RMA'ed -
-
Honestly, at least under 10.7a this vBios Beta has worked like a charm so far. I will be trying 10.8 here shortly and if that works as well then *MY* GSOD issue is resolved. That does not mean that if Asus finds a "fix" for the GSOD issue for everyone I won't upgrade to it, but it also doesn't mean that I think Asus' job is done in supporting customers for thier hardware.
Honestly, the ultimate "resolution" for this if Asus can't make the vBios right is for mass RMA'ing of units to Asus. But, Asus also knows that unless it is a problem that keeps you from using the laptop at all, most people will be hesitant to send thier units in.
We have just started getting results from Gary, so let him do his job. It is obvious the vBios Beta misses the mark for some people, so it is still a work in progress. As long as they are diligently working towards fixing these issues, that is all we can ask for.
Now, if in a month we don't have a fix for the vBios, then yes, people should be raising hell with Asus and Gary for letting such a problem languish.
I, personally, am looking more forward to the missing keystroke fix than I am even for vBios, as it affects me much more frequently than the annoyance of not having the latest video driver. -
Ideally, this seems to be more of a "timing" issue in regards to how the hardware works, thus as some have eluded to, maybe the key is checking into the differences between the MSI/Clevo implimentation and that which Asus is using.
I have a funny feeling the big differences are located in the support for VGA/HDMI. If that *IS* the caseit coudl be something as stupid as Asus needing to disable tri-monitor support because they didn't pay the license to ATi for that feature. The hardware can do it, that much is known, and more times than not when you disable a feature you create a ton more problems than enabling a feature does.
There is most certainly something going on that we don't know about, be it timing, a bug, custom Asus code or whatever else is going on.
It is just strange that the premier ATi videocard maker out there, that being ASUS, cannot get this right wit all the BIOS-coding experts they employ. Which again would seem to point to a feature being pulled out due to a licensing issue more than it is a matter of maxing the BIOS out to make it all it should be.
I HATE politics and this is smelling more and more like a political than a technical issue. Who knows, maybe Asus screwed the pooch and physically screwed something up in the design that is making this such a problem, and as such they just don't want to "do what is right" and eat the cost of fixing the hardware. -
Here
anyway, Asus is clearly doing damage control. They know more than they tell us what is *really* wrong. However, it is not an easy fix or it is a flaw in design. They just can't come out and say it so they are trying to find a solution that will preserve their image and their customers' loyalty and trying to avoid the huge cost of a recall.
Someone suggested we'd all get JW's ... imagine they do it for 1000 of us. That means scrapping 1000 units and giving away for "free" 1000 more units. Without thinking of the shipping and handling costs we are talking 2 000 000$... even to ASUS that's some cash... so unlikely. The G73 would need to be exploding and endangering the life of the owner or something like that but we are very far from that. -

Do the GSOD also occur when testing on battery? Because if not we might have to take a look at the power supply.

Hope so. My money is still on the video memory.
Those with Hynix memory have no problems. Those with Samsung have a hit and miss relationship. For some it works and for others it doesn't. -
Clevo also uses Samsung and Hynix and they have no problem with either so i highly doubt its the vRAM.
-
What I think is the Vbios from asus has maybe something "out of specs". A bit like an overclock.
Some hardware may tolerate it and some don't.
