I have appreciated reading all the work you folks have put into figuring out all the fun with our new laptops. I have the microcenter version of the g73, and added a sandforce 1200 based sdd, and then installed windows 7 enterprise. I used the latest 10.8 ati drivers and was quite happy for a week or so. I then started getting the nice video "features" that Gary hopes to fix with his magic bios. After reading hundreds of pages of posts and trying about umpteen things (drivers, clockspeed, bios), I took a flyer on removing the asus power management software, and setting windows power management to the perfomance setting. My GSOD and random lockup issues have gone away.
-
my issues have been resolved in 10.7a. All other versions i get GSOD...my theory is that there is a flaw in the bios that leaves you subsetable to the issue. The issue itself seems to get triggered by different things for different users....clock speeds, heat, power managment, etc.....but this is jsut my theory.....perhaps we will know more with the new Vbios
-
I'm so happy!! In japanese - Shiawase da wa. If it passes the tests today, I may have to go out and buy a flash drive cause I lost mine
-
sadly for me, the 10.7a with the stock vBIOS and 209 render GSOD in SC2. Also, before the GSOD comming, SC2 perform worse than 10.1. So, I'm stick with 10.1 and stock vBIOS
-
Thats gooooood working. Hope that solves most of the problems we have.
Thanks -
well gary say it may come today or next week hope today so i can test this vbios for the weekend and see if i get a gsod
-
Way to under-promise and over deliver! AWESOME! (if it works).
-
considering the fact that the cause of the problem may actually have been nailed down, it's a good chance this sucker may work. Alas, even I am awaiting for this to show up in my email....
and still waiting... -
And only compatible with 209?
-
A new VGA driver is not annouced ? why you don't update it ? the last is dated from 21/01/2010. For a gamer laptop is not good :/
-
Because we are suppose to be using the reference mobility drivers released by AMD. And those get updated monthly.

Both NVidia and AMD want to go to the situation as it is with the desktop graphic cards. THEY create the drivers.
The whole point is that they can release drivers when they have to because a new game demands it for bug fixes, features and performance. This is a good thing in my opinion. It solves the problem that after 2 years a laptop manufacturer stops supporting the hardware while I need to have a new driver because a certain game doesn't look like it should.
I had that with the Dell XPS M1710 which can easily play FEAR 2 but I needed a newer driver to get it to display properly. So I had to muck around with a modified inf. This situation in unwanted. -
The driver of AMD/ATI doesn't work properly ; freeze, Gsod and many more bug !
-
-
I can tell you don't read this forum much, do you?
The point is that you are SUPPOSE to use those drivers, and Asus is NOT suppose to supply new ones. But due to a revision of the GPU card, they broke compatibility with the new AMD drivers.
If you are unhappy with waiting for the new vBIOS fix, which I may add, is the hot topic here, I would suggest you install the MSI vBIOS and stop reading. -

Have you been reading this thread? That is what the video BIOS is for?
Maybe you should actually read something here........... -
...what are you even talking about? Download the newest ATI mobility driver if you'd prefer.
*edit* Evidently I missed a whole page of stupidity. Look, read the thread and THEN post. -
It resolves the GSOD problem with driver sets post 10.4 along with improved powerplay support. Additional items like Overdrive support will be worked on in the future but for now, at least across every unit returned for GSOD problems this vBIOS has solved that problem with BIOS 0211 and the 10.8 drivers. As an example, units that failed Furmark within 3 minutes are now at 12 hours and counting. I cannot say it will be 100% successful on every possible combination of hardware/software setups but at this point it is working well.
-
Congrats. Im impatient to test and confirm it is working
Your work is appreciated. -
Does this mean there will be a good chance of it being released today?
-
I will probably be at work when this gets released, hope when I get home at midnight there will be some official vbios in my hands!!
-
He said next week, so unless someone can leak it here somehow, don't hold your breath.
Hopefully when my computer gets back, It'll be GSOD-free (and bright dot free =S). -
While that is great news, I do belive you didn't actually answer his question
.
Quite a lot of us are wondering *what* is broken. Considering the amount of work this community (myself not being one of the contributors, do mind) laid down to figure this out, shedding some light on exactly what (i.e. cause, not symptom) is being fixed here would be very interesting for a lot of us
.
Regardless, great work. You should hit certain people in QA over the head with a bricked g73 because quite a lot of these issues are, quite simply, amazing to let slip trough. -
He said later that it might make it out today if it passes qualification testing. He even later said that furmark had been running for 12 hours straight with no issues. I just wondered if that meant qualification testing wouldn't take much longer (since it's already been 12 hours). -

Ditto. Would like to read about the technical part. -
Excellent news. Thank you for your dedication to this issue, Gary. Your work is greatly appreciated.
-
Just hope my notebook arrives tomorrow to try out this update if it's released later today/tonight. Awaiting for FedEx to turn my package around to the correct address.
-
Bring it on! Woohoo!!!
-
Nice, hopefully it is not only fine tuned for 10.8 and it will work with 10.4-10.7+future drivers as well.
Keep up the good work.
Also it seems now every1 has to update their BIOS to 211
-
hopefully we wont brick our laptops updating the vbios once again
-
Why? Who bricked his laptop with Asus vBIOS update? First time I hear about this.
-
If we are on BIOS 206 do we have to upgrade to 209 and then 211 or can we go straight from 206 to 211? Thanks
-
You can go straight to 0211 but only use the latest Flash tool at our support site.
-
yes u can !
-
Or EZFlash in BIOS
-
Here's a teaser of the new vBIOS: (currently up to 01:14:00)
no, I can't give it out yet, so don't ask. If I do, we'll have to wait for Asus Web Admins to post any new updates, and Gary will get yelled at. So, no.
Tho, on the good news, I already made an Overdrive version.
-
Exactly what I needed to know. THANKS GARY!
-
can we use this if we don't suffer from GSOD's,
-
Chastity,
Haven't seen this question yet;
Do you think that the new vBIOS will help lower temps on non-repasted G73's?
Thanks,
In Peace and Agape,
Trav... -
you can't lower temps unless you reset or repaste your vid card. You can only lower temps if the vbios is set to undervolt your card and that has proven to be marginal in giving better temps.
-
Just so that everyone is clear...because this has been asked before.
Gary, you stated only use the latest Flash tool at support site.
I know myself and others have used EZFlash from within BIOS (not WinFlash).
Did I miss something, but/or are both acceptable for use? -
Hi Gary, would u be qualifying the new vBios with BIOS 0209 as well ? I really wouldn't want to upgrade to 0211 from 0209 if it's not required (don't need the faster/louder fans). Would 0211 be absolutely necessary for this new vBios ?
-
it works for 209 just fine... I'm using that now
-
Does the new bios 2011 pushing the fans help with GPU temps at all? Because mines riding that fine line between over heating and not over heating, lol.
-
Well, the fans will crank up faster sooner. How bad are your temps?
-
Seconding this question, I prefer quieter fans w/ 209
-
I don't wanna be a naysayer... oh, who am I kidding, I love it.
I have never in my life thought "gosh, this machine runs cooler when the fans are quiet". I have also never thought "this machine would run better if only it were hotter".
In general: If you are seeing a lot of fan noise, it is almost certainly because the machine is running warm and would rather not melt and become worthless. Noise is better than an RMA. -
Hopefully we will get this vBios today since Chastidy has it. It would be nice to try it out over this holiday weekend (US).
