But how does this help current uses who suffer from TIM problems?
-
-
Thumbs up for Gary and Asus taking a whack at all of the issues instead of just one...or none
-
Thanks G Man
-
Wow im wordless. Your the best Gary and That make me love asus. As long as all this get fix this is a +1000 for Asus.
Every company should have this kind of support.
Thank you -
I'm kinda excited. It would be nice if Asus will do something for the systems that already have poor TIM applications. Mines alright but it can be much, much better. Perhaps giving Best Buy the green light to repaste RBBX05 units at least, or something.
Can't wait for some solutions. Gary, you have my thanks and the thanks of many here at NBR for your work. -
Great work Gary and thank you for the update. I sure hope someone at ASUS is keeping an eye on this forum to take note of all the good work you have been doing here!
-
They better!
-
Yes would love to be able to take it somewhere to get repasted under warrenty. Other than that great work Gary and I can probally speak for everyone in saying thank you for the frequent updates and hard work.
-
Thanks for the update, Gary!
-
Heh, wish Asus would just focus on releasing a proper vBios like MSI has. There really isn't any excuse for this.
And keyboard lights. Having to RMA a notebook after losing lights from an official bios using the official easyflash is also inexcusable. -
Isn't that what he said about their Primary solution has enter qualification testing?
-
the first primary solution will be the upcoming 10.8 drivers from asus. The next will be the development of the new vBios and the easy installer for full update (vBios + BIOShiger than 209)
-
TIM= thermal paste issues right? Is this problem mainly from the stock paste? Will I have the same problems if xoticpc applies IC diamond as part of my order?
-
No, you shouldnt have any TIM issues if you get them to do that.
-
excellent news
-
Yes, indeed. Maybe we'll here from Gary about that
Thanks GARY! Nice to see some progress -

Thanks for the updates. The SSD problem is interresting. It looks like there is no way at the moment to prevent the CPU going into C6 state when you are on external power. Usually this power stuff is disabled from the BIOS. But since this is all Intels stuff I wonder what they have to say about it.
Is it possible Gary can get a thread here only he can post in and is placed at the top?
-
This should do, it's what I've been using to keep tabs on him
http://forum.notebookreview.com/search.php?searchid=5103901 -
I get "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

Gary is doing great work indeed BUT... (don't wanne be an *** but still gonne say it)... in the first place, his work shouldn't be needed..
If Asus had done their homework good, none of those problems would occur. This is no personnal attack to you Gary but I do hope Asus takes note off these problems before launching another 2.000 $/€ laptop...
We are the high-end market, we pay for top quality and what we got is close to garbage... This is unacceptable...
Imagine you bought a car and can't drive on the highway for 6 months... Well, this is the same with the G73...
I hereby ask again for a small compensation (worldwide)... Nothing more, nothing less... -
I hope in "primary solution" you don't mean that you will only release Catalyst 10.8 as a fix -_-
-
So true, so true. Excellent example.

Well Chastity on her repaste thread makes the best suggestion:
If you're not comfortable repasting yourself, call Asus for an RMA and take it to an authorized service center. Fortunately for myself there's three here in southern California with one in Los Angeles within driving distance. I called them and left a message at the service extension after business hours. The rep called me promptly in the morning and said to get an RMA number from Asus and then bring it in and they'll do a repaste. He was cool and said he'd also check and replace any fans if needed and said they'd get it working to where it needs to be.
Life got in the way so that I haven't had a chance to call Asus and get an RMA number.
Obviously there's many people in different parts of the world who don't have a service center within a short commute where they can drop their notebook off. But if you are close to one, or can deal with the turnaround time, I would get an RMA from Asus and say you're temps are running so high that you're getting constant shutdowns and everyone online says the GPU needs to be repasted and you want an RMA for that.
I'm sure if they get enough RMA's (as it does cost them money having to pay the invoice and billing from the authorized service center) then maybe at least they will take enough notice to make sure to get on the original techs or machines that do the pasting and make the proper adjustments for future owners, all while getting yours fixed at the same time.
For those in the south west of the U.S., I'll post how my experience goes with this L.A spot once I get an RMA and get it in there. It probably won't happen until next week, but as soon as I get it back I'll post my experience.
Since a new VBios and GSOD fix is in the pipes, if you can afford the wait time to get an RMA for a repasting at an authorized service center, this seems to be the best course of action. Again, we're talking about taking it to a local place that is authorized by Asus rather than sending it back to them directly.
However, I noticed, that Fry's electronics here in the Los Angeles area (where I bought mine) showed several units in stock at more than one store. I haven't seen that at all since last year. And it's stayed that way for a few days. So that might be some evidence that the parts shortage that was causing major RMA delays because there wasn't enough parts for repairs nor to make new units - is over.
Hope that helps. Cheers! -

@HellCry
Proof of Hynix memory on the G73JH video card here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/507854-thermal-paste-g73jh-gpu-5.html
So I did remember it correctly.
Picture of the 5870m with the video memory at the top.
At the top, second from the right. It clearly says Hynix.
Since I didn't hear him about a GSOD or Shockie and I haven't had one either and we are all from Europe( Belgium and Netherlands) and got it around the same time. It does look like it is memory related. -
Big thanks to Gary for all the updates and communication. This kind of stuff is the best PR a company can get in my eyes. Really looking forward to the result of all this!
-
Both HellCry's and my cards have Samsung video memory. His GSODs, mine does not. It may be memory related, but having Hynix or Samsung memory does not seem to be the cause.
-
I already got a cofirmation from Gary that pretty much all vRAM brands can be found on the mobility 5870 in the g73jh, but as Dkumagai pointed out its not related to the vRAM brands.
And Samsung is considered to be the best quality vRAM if youre wondering.
And an update:
I received the ordered 3rd GPU replacement today and installed it. Samsung vRAM again. Used MX-3 paste and the furmark peak temperature is now 91C at 27C ambient, but strangely idle temp is higher on this gpu - 59~61C and i still get GSODs on the newer drivers so still no luck. I also got the keyboard replacement and it still misses keystrokes with the tochpad enabled (ordered it becouse the previous one was bent and becouse i just thought why not get a slovenian one if i can, i didnt really expect the missing keystrokes issue to be fixed and sadly i was right again, but its nice having a completely flat keyboard with the slovenian layout - i have to admit the US one was bugging me unlike the german layout which i liked). -
Darn Americans. Oh wait... that's me!
-
Its just your layout is too different (all the symbls that are written with shift are in a different position so the markings on the keyboard were off for me) and some things like the enter key being so tiny and squished in between the other keys was a downgrade from a slovenian or german layout
.
I have no grudge with the US keyboard or Americans lol how did you come to that conclusion from my post
? I just prefer this layout and they keys actually having the right symbols on them thats all.

I know. It's Friday and I was checking my favorite forums before I leave my office. It's late in the day here and after 3:30 in the afternoon on Fridays I am just about worthless unless a server is down or I have a big coding project that has hit crunch time. I'm basically wasting forum space with poor attempts at humor.

There is no way your machine should be GSODing using the stock 10.1s from Asus. If you are certain that you downloaded and installed the 10.1s from Asus's G73 page (i.e the correct drivers), and made sure you got rid of anyh residual drivers before installing it (Driver sweeper in safe mode) and it GSODs then you should definitely RMA straight away.
People have GSODs on reference drivers, not on Asus's officially released ones (which in this case would be the 9.12 and 10.1).
RMA. -
Thanks Gary a lot. Its very assuring when i see that Asus is dealing with these problems ASAP.. Hopefully you have a solution soon.
Ziddy, calm down.. at least he's doing something although it must be hard for you with all the waiting//
sigh.. compensation... u want compensation? You get the fixes full stop..
And everyone , cut the guy some slack! He's doing an excellent job to solve all the problems.. it musn't be easy for u with all the waiting with half working units but trust me, its much harder to order and wait while reading all this.. Just everyone calm down and let Gary do his job. -
Best piece of advice Ive seen in this thread so far.... well besidesThanks, I do
-
HellCry, if you don't mind me asking where did you purchase your international keyboard for you G73 and was it the gray color that matches our lappys? Also how much did it cost you all together, including shipping and other charges? Thanks in advance
.

Has anyone else had a problem with ocassionally the screen going entirely black for a split second in games? Seems like it might be an artifacting problem. Kind of debating whether I should exchange at Best Buy because of this tomorrow.
-
I have once or twice but it was the first time I had run that particular game
-
Thanks for your quick response. I have decided to hold onto it. Whatever problems arise I will deal with them then
-
Right on, enjoy your notebook
-
Can't even imagine the kind of QA Tools you would need to make in order to iron out the missing keystroke problem, perhaps a quick excerpt from Gary might shed some light on this problematic issue both from a find it and fix it angle.
-
Uhm i ordered a replacement under warranty
. The keyboard is the G73JH model juts like the original one, but the layout is slovenian.
I just told them it misses keystrokes and i want a new one. They ordered it for me so it came together with the replacement gpu. -
i installed win7 ultimate and than i downloaded the asus vga driver from the support site..
so.. this was the first driver i installed on the G73 and i got GSOD after 30 min gaming..
MFG M4dMike -
Hmmm......did you used to get GSODs on the stock installation of windows? Or did the GSODs start right after you installed Windows ultimate. Either ways though, you should not be having GSODs on the Asus 10.1s. I would say RMA straight away. Also, given that this thread is for ASUS updates only, you might want to move this to a new thread and see what others think.

I've been having major artifacts in SC2... can't even play... do want new bios... hopefully my video card is not fried. -_-
-
I get that sometimes when I play CoD4. It doesn't bother me that much though, and other than that the game performs great, so I don't worry about it too much.
-
Using newer drivers? If so the described phenomenon is the flashing artifacts you get before you GSOD - kinda of an indicator of it. Its best seen in furmark, where before you get a GSOD youll usually see a lot of this behaviour. In games it only occurs once in a while and GSOD in some is very rare, you might just play without GSODing completely, but just getting these flashes - its not normal behaviour if thats what youre wondering. On a stable system you do not see such things.
-
Nope. I'm on stock 9.12, latest drivers give GSOD's, just like almost everyone else. I'm waiting for the new vBIOS and modified 10.8 to update.
-
no updates today?

skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
I have been following the forums here about GSOD/PSOD for awhile.
What I can't figure out is "WHY" are you members with this problem still trying to troubleshoot this BS?
My first G73JH had BSOD/GSOD. My 2nd(touchpad/spacebar issue), 3rd(Power Brick/BIOS Boot 2x's).
My 4th G73JH is perfect!! Currently I'm running 211 w/10.7a CCC & Asus Branded W7HP 64bit. It also doesn't matter what CCC drivers I have installed everything runs as a "Gaming Laptop" should. I also have an A1 that runs perfect.
Its obviously a hardware problem.
So lets just say that these new VBIOS come out and fix these GSOD problems. The fact still remains that, "Your model with the same configuration could not perform as it should until a line of code was released to fix something that should have worked before leaving the factory".
If I was an inheritor of the GSOD I would return/RMA as many times as necessary until the problem was fixed.
I hope this post doesn't come off as a in your face post. It just annoys me how soooo many of us put up with this BS.
I applaud Gary for trying to help but with all of Asus's problems at current and in the past(G71/W90), I believe that this matter requires an apology, compensation and a whole team dedicated to this problem. Forget the G53, G73JW etc.. we have problems right NOW that need immediate attention yesterday!!
For example lets just say you bought a brand new Toyota and come to find out that the brakes don't work and neither does the radio. Do you think Toyota would put forth a reasonable amout of effort/capital to get the situation rectified in a timely manner? I think so.
I know that these products cost alot less than cars but I think this is a valid point.
