Hello Turbogear, thank you very much for helping me out here!

So as sungar already said, my GPU score is good, almost identical to yours, but my CPU score is bad!
My CPU score is 1326 and yours is 2937.

Sungar, I am not running any applications while benchmarking!
I disable all those processes in Start Up via msconfig before running the test (anti virus, firewall and a couple of processes more), restart and that run 3dmark!

I got an idea what could be wrong with my CPU, please let me know what do you think!
I think that my Hyper-Threading Technology is off!
Please answer me this, how does your Windows Task Manager->Performance tab->CPU Usage History looks like?
Does it looks like this -> [IMG]
It has 8 of those windows under CPU Usage History, 2 for each core right?

I saw this photo tonight and I remembered that I had that also when I installed my OS, but now I have only one window there!
So I guess that my Hyper-Threading got disabled somehow?!
I looked in my BIOS, but there is no HT option there! Does somebody know how to turn Hyper-Threading ON?? (if that is the case here...)

On my notebook I see all the 8 CPU process windows.
If you don't have these process windows than there is definitely something wrong with your system.

Do you see four process windows or do you see only one?

I think if the Hyperthreading is disabled then still you should see one process per CPU core so in total four processes.

    I see only one window!
And now it's official, take a look at this: [IMG]

    CPU-Z is showing: Cores 1 Threads 1!
So something is definitively wrong! :(

I flashed my BIOS to v208 and this is from than on probably!
What to do now???! There is a newer version of BIOS, should I try with that one maybe?
But a lot of people has BIOS v208 and it works fine, does this mean that a damage has been done to my CPU?
Turbogear , which BIOS are you running?

    I have also bios v208.
Maybe try to go into bios and load the factory default settings just in case somthing strange is going on there, but I don't think that this has happened due to bios flash.

I think many people are using v208 now since this one contains the fix to fan issue that we had before.

In your screen shot, I see the CPU is running at 930MHz.
Is the CPU in your case only running at 930MHz or does it also go to higher frequencies?
If it is stuck at 930MHz then it could be something with the power management. My CPU usually is running at higher frequencies.
It reduces to 930MHz and stays there when I am using the notebook on battery.

By the way, where did you see a newer version of bios for N71JQ?
As far as I know v208 is the latest version.
I looked at both, the ASUS FTP and ASUS download website for the N71JQ and in both placed the v208 is still the newest version.

Yes, you are right, v208 is the last version of bios for N71.
    I made a mistake, I saw v212 on Stevedogg's driver thread but it's for N61 only!

I already did that, nothing has changed!

I took a screen shot at idle so the CPU was on 0.9Ghz!
I keep my power option at Balanced, so the clock is there most of the time! It goes to higher frequencies when needed (up to 2.8Ghz), but sometimes it's stuck up to 1.7Ghz (like right now), and after restart it starts to go up to 2.8Ghz again.

What could have cause this, what do you think?!

What about BIOS v207, does it also has a fan problem? Should I downgrade to it an see what happens, what do you think?

It is a strange problem and I am not sure what has caused it.

You can try v207 to check if there was some problem with v208, especially to see if something did not go wrong during the flashing to v208.

The v207 does not fix the fan cycling issue. It is only implemented in the latest bios i.e. v208, but flashing back to older bios should make it clear if the problem is due to the bios.

As I said in my last post, CPU clock was stuck to 1.7Ghz max, and now after I restarted it goes up to 2.8Ghz again!

Is there any chance that my OS can cause this?! Would the clean install help!
I installed a lot of programs and deinstalled, especially Asus utilities, and tried a lot of drivers, tried a couple of registry cleaners allowing them to fix all faults they found, etc etc... I really did a lot of bad things to my system :) , and all that just to try all those Asus utilities and some other programs, because I plan to do a clean install from the start!

So I am wondering could Windows do all this, but I doubt it!
Anyway I will do a clean install soon and see if that will fix anything...

It could happen but I am not sure.
Did you have Power4Gear installed before?

I once had problems with power4gear under Vista and I remember that it was not possible to remove it completely once it is installed.
One had to go to safe mode and remove some registry components manually.

If you had it installed before, maybe try to install it again to see if something changes.

I have no idea how you can have all your vitual cores in device manager and not in task manager, unless your windows installation is corrupted somehow (try a sfc /scannow perhaps?) or you've got some 3rd party utility or stray setting messing with things. I guess you could try force-reinstalling your platform drivers, as a shot in the dark.

You should look in your ms config. On second tab in advenced settings there is an option that allow you to define how many cores should use your system. Try to set this option to 8.

SUNGAR, YOU ARE THE MAN! :D THANKS MAN, I OWE YOU BIG ONE! ;)

I completely forgot that I messed with those settings earlier! I run into this Windows 7 Optimization guide and this was suppose to reduce
boot and shut down time! And all I did was reduce the number of my CPU cores! :D :D

I can't remember what was set by default under the Number of processors (Boot tab->Advanced options), but in this guide it is advised to set to number 2!
I think that this wasn't enabled in the first place at all! Anyway, now it was set to number 1, and I couldn't change it at all!

So I just disabled this, restarted and now I have my 8 cores back, yihaaaa... :D

And now my 3dmark 06 score is normal, 8058! [IMG]
    SM 2.0 Score: 2903
    SM 3.0 Score: 3596
    CPU Score: 3084
Now I love my laptop again... :)

So I guess we learned from this how you can disable your cores, if you ever need it! ;)

    Thanks everybody...

Ok, So I checked my N61jq and it is set at 1. So if more people could chime in on what this should be set on and if not on 1 then why was it set there ?
turbogear, have any thoughts on this?

EDIT- I got this answer from stevedogg on the N61jq thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/6873804-post6602.html

Yes as stevedogg already said, this is a debug function built into windows which allows to choose a certain number of logical cores for debugging purposes.
For normal operation this should be left at default settings.

Hmm, I am really not sure why it is set to no. 1 at your notebook. Did you ever changed anything at these settings?
Anyway, just uncheck this option (Number of processors) and let it be... ;)

I made a mistake when I set it manually, because my logic was that I have only 1 CPU and that it should be set to no. 1! :)
I forgot that is wasn't set at all by default, but now it is ok...

I guess that this can be used when playing certain games, because I read that some games run badly when run with multitheading.
So this can help I guess...

This is way above my pay grade but I think you are miss interpreting what this setting is for. What I gather from what experts like turbogear and stevedogg has said is that this is used for debugging and does not set your cores for normal operations. And it does not even seem to be activated unless you select it.

After Win7 64-bit reinstall, I'm looking for WinDVD app, but only see Vista 64-bit driver on the ASUS site. Anyone know where the WinDVD Win7 files are - or if they exist????

btw I don't have a blueray player; I downloaded what looked like the latest Win7 BD player, but it didn't work. . . am I missing something?

Except for one small thing - that BD version of WinDVD will only play on the laptop screen; it gets all screwed up with an external monitor plugged into the VGA port, apparently a known "gotcha."

"Your display environment does not support protected contact playback."

All fine without external monitor connected.

Is there a non BD version of WinDVD we can download somewhere that's also free?

How do I downgrade the bios? The flash utility says its older than the current and forces me to click exit. I want to flash 206 back, the version it came with. It has 208 now.

Good to know for when I get a TV with HDMI, but I don't have a TV with HDMI. I'm just using a VGA cable. Of course, every other program runs fine on the Dell monitor . . .

A freeware program called VLC is displaying fine on the Dell monitor, but it's a little clunky.

I don't know whether the aggressive DRP on BD players in general does this with VGA or if it is specific to your setup. Be interesting to find out. I will, one of these days, get around to renting a BD and try it with a VGA connection. Tomorrow is Whacky Wednesday at Blockbuster...

OK, everyone's favorite, a fan question: in the general course of going about my computing business, the fan in my N71JQ-XI behaves itself. However, if I let the machine sleep . . . well, a little sleep seems okay . . . but if it sleeps too long, when it unhibernates, then I can't get the fan to go off . . . at all. Anyone had this one who can offer some advice? Nothing else is bothering me enough to flash the BIOS.

And everyone's least favorite question: still no one found a way to install a second hard drive in an XI?

You never know if it'll be the last Whacky Wednesday at Blockbuster . . . they're in full retreat here in Denver. However, it's Whacky Everyday with the Denver Public Library system - it's free to have any DVD pulled from any library within 50 miles to the branch two blocks away from me. With email notification it's arrived.

Many BD's will only show on one screen at a time. I'ts a copyright protection thing. I discovered this when I hooked up a BD movie to my N61JQ. I had the laptop screen on and it would not play on the TV thru HDMI. And I belive I got a similar warning as you. When I called Asus I found out about the 1 screen at a time copyright protection on BD's. So you can choose your VGA port or your laptop screen but not both at the same time. Sometime I wish I lived in Japan and Didn't have to put up with all this copyright Bull that the Media companies force down consumers throats in the US.

Hello,i have bought the ASUS N71JQ.
I have notice a thin noise in the fan. When the GPU temperature is less than 60 ºC, it does the noise, but if a play a game and the GPU temperature increase, the noise stop.
    Is this normal?

If your system did not come with bios v208 then most probably it is the fan ramping up and down problem that all of us experienced before.

This problem was solved with the bios v208.

Info worthy of deification! Works like a charm now. Thanks!

Anyone know how to adjust the built-in camera zoom, or face tracking, or use anything other than default settings? Do I need to install an ASUS utility? btw I did a fresh Win7 install, so I don't have the standard utilities installed at the moment.

Hi, I have a couple of questions concerning the ASUS N71JQ, and it seems someone here would be able to help me out possibly (you'll hopefully forgive me for not sifting through the 166 page thread).

I'm possibly going to buy the N71JQ-XT1 (from Tiger Direct / $900) and I'm trying to see if it's a newer model, or older, than the -X1. The Laptop doesn't seem to exist besides Tiger's website (including Asus.com). This is just a curiousity of mine, not a big deal if it's older or newer.

$900 would be a hefty investment for myself, and more importantly I'm curious if anyone has encountered the issues a number of newegg reviewers have cited for the N71JQ...

    ( Newegg.com - ASUS N71JQ-X1 NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730)

... such as numerous crashes, failures to boot, poor CS response, et. cetera.

Also, I've looked around a lot, and for the power, this seems to be a deal, I'm just a very careful shopper. I appreciate the feedback.

From the specifications at the tigerdirect, it looks like that it is similar to X1 model.
As it comes with single Hard disk, then most probably it does not include this special adapter to install the secondary drive.

I personally own this notebook since February and I never had any big issue with it except for this fan ramping up and down every few seconds. This particular issue was also solved with latest bios v208.

I am following this lounge very closely and I have not seen so many complains from owners of this model as those which are posted at newegg.

I second that! I bought a N71JQ-A1 from J&R in April of this year and I just flat love it. For me the fan issue was small, but I am glad they fixed it.

It is a great laptop for the price.

I own it for about 2 months and I am very satisfied also! I hope it will stay that way for some time more (like 2-3 years) :)

There is only one minor thing I noticed...
After being powered on for a longer time (I usually just keep it on stand by, don't power it off), the CPU clock don't want to go up to 2.8Ghz, it goes to 1.7Ghz only!
After restart everything is OK again
    !

I notice this because I have EVEREST turn on all the time, and those sensors for CPU and GPU temps and CPU clock are always in my system tray!
I just did a system back up, made an image of C: partition with Acronis True Image, and the CPU was on 100% all the time because I set the CPU priority to highest!
The clock was only 1.7Ghz! As I said, after restart everything is ok, the clock goes to 2.8Ghz...

Turbo Boost alters your cpu clock speed depending on the number of cores being boosted, if you are only using one core for your applications then it can go up to 2.8GHz, if you are using 2 then it is 2.4GHz, and for all 4 it is 1.73GHz - the regular clock speed being 1.6GHz, so your Turbo Boost is working fine it is just because you are using all 4 cores in your process that the Turbo Boost is limited to 1.73GHz.

Guys, I'm experiencing a problem with my laptop and I just want to know if anybody else is facing this issue, or if someone could help me with mine. I am facing with rather small transfer rates (upload/download) on my USB ports - all of them, doesn't matter what I'm plugging in.
When I try the same devices on other laptops, the transfer rates are with at least a third faster than on mine. Got any ideas? I already checked the USB host controller and it is working just fine. The drivers are also up to date. My piece has 2x320GB 7200RPM HDDs. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
    Thank you!

Congratulation for becoming a new owner of this model and welcome to the lounge. :)

If you want to update the drivers then have a look here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html

This thread is for N61JQ but all drivers posted there are the same for N71JQ except for bios. The bios posted there is for N61JQ.

The lastest bios of N71JQ is v208 and it fixes a problem which is discussed in details in this lounge. This problem is related to fan which before bios v208 used to cycle between ON/OFF state every few seconds.

For latest bios for N71JQ go here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

In case you decide to flash the bios, put the bios file on a USB flash drive and flash it using the EasyFlash tool which is found inside the system bios.
To access the notebook bios you can press F2 at the start-up.

    Hey, good post!
Thanks for clearing that out! You got a rep from me... ;)

You forgot to point out that the USB flash has to be formated in FAT32!
Let me do that for you... :) ;)

Hmm. I'm not getting any visuals from my webcam. There's a chance I may have turned off the wrong running program. Any thoughts?

    You are welcome. :)

    Thanks a lot.
I forgot to mention this important point.

Maybe try the latest Intel chipset driver.

Check in the Device Manager to see if you have disabled the Webcam by mistake.

Is there anywhere to change the settings for the onboard camera, like zoom, face-tracking, any options like that?

i have a question. i'm buying a pair of 4gb x 2 crucial memory for my n71jq to swap out the current 2gb x 2 ram. though, the speed on the ram i got is at 1333mhz and the new ram im getting is at 1066 though. will i still benefit from increased memory?

also another question. i just joined recently and i haven't read through the entire thread (168 pages!). i noticed a lot of people tried to increase the fps for the webcam. so as of right now theres nothing i can really do? should i just buy a clip-on webcam?
