Hey! I don't actually have one of these yet, but I'm looking to buy one. I need some help though, for the life of me I can't figure out the difference between the X1, X2, XT1, and A1 models. I'm looking at the XT1 because it's WAY cheaper, but I'm thinking there must be a catch. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

I think the XT1 model is cheaper because it has single HDD and also has no Blu-Ray drive.
As already discussed before in this forum X1, X2 and XT has a single drive compared to A1 model and in these models the connector to build in a secondary drive is also missing. So you cannot put another drive into these machines afterwards.
It was mentioned by owners who bought the X1 models before that the missing adapter cannot be bought anywhere so far.

Wow thanks for your help! I tried searching the thread but couldn't come up with anything. I have two external HDDs (and will be upgrading from a computer with 150GB, yikes) and I won't need to dual boot or anything so I think I'd be okay with one, and I have a PS3 and HDTV for blu-ray so I think I'll go for the XT1 for $900 compared to $1300 for the A1. Thanks! :)

    Hi all.

    New member & 1st post.

I've read every page here & I don't see too many with my problem. I purchased a new N71JQ off ebay recently. I'm a bit green when it comes to the technical lingo here but I know my way around a computer to a degree.

Anyway, my problem is random freezing. As I said, it's totally random. It's never froze on startup (yet). I've read numerous reports on the web that it's happening to a lot & the most common denominator is the WIN7 OS itself. After saying that, it could actually be this N71, so I'm here to find out, as well as try & contribute something to this forum.

I've never had a BSOD & my freezing is unlogable obviously, with a total freeze. All I can do is a cold boot using the power switch & naturally after reboot it comes up with the standard "Windows did not shut down correctly".

I've tried uninstalling a lot of programs that I didn't need that came installed on the system (I'm running 64bit Ultimate BTW) which seems to have helped with the freezing: It's not as often now, but still random.

I'm trying to ascertain if it's the laptop or OS in any case.

Running BIOS ver. 2.6 (installed on system from new) & I do not have the fan ramp up/down problem.

When it's not freezing, it runs beautifully & QUICK. I've optimized it for speed.

    Thanks all!

    John in Australia.

Welcome to the lounge and congrats on your new lappy. With regards to your problem. Does it lock up entrily every time or does it stop for a while and then start running again?

I can tell you for a fact that it is not Windows 7; I have run 7 Home Premium and Ultimate on numerious machines laptops, desktops and netbooks, with no freezing issues of any kind. Freezing as in complete stop or long pause is almost always a hardware problem. Try running scandisk against your primary HD. I personally do not trust the Seagate HDs that these things come with. I would also suggest doing a clean install of Windows 7 with nothing more than ASUS drivers, no apps. It will run faster anyway.

Keep us posted on your progress and we will try to help any way we can.

    Dave

    Edit

    In this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/518687-asus-g73jw-owners-lounge-127.html

They are talking about freezing due to an outdated driver. Turbo posted the links for dirver and BIOS updates on the previous page.

Thanks Dave, I'm getting a total freeze every time. Frozen cursor, ctrl/Alt-Del won't work. It'll stay that way forever if I let it.

Yeah, I've read plenty about the seagates..Clean install coming up once I work out how to do it lol. I have the recovery & driver discs. I assume I just use them, but I'll do some reading first. Any pointers/tips/links would be appreciated here!

    Thanks in advance.

I'll look into that link you posted. Thanks.

So it is freezing but not Blue Screening? Sounds like a driver issue. You can check the driver versions in Device Manager. Right click on Computer and select Manage then select Device manager. Driver info will be in the properties for each device.

Here is a link about legit Win7 downloads: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

The COA or CD Key is on the bottom of your laptop and will work fine with telephone activation, just make sure that you have backed up any personal data. Boot from the Windows DVD and go from there. Windows 7 has almost all of the drivers needed. You can add the rest from the disk that came with the laptop.

You may want to replace the primary HD. I just bought a 500GB 7200 rpm Western Digital from NewEgg for like 80 bucks. The reason for doing that is that you can keep the factory disk as is.

    Good luck with it

    Dave

Well, I spilled some liquid on my laptop (which was working great) and messed it up. I got an RMA number from Asus and sent it in to be repaired, as I thought it was covered by their accidental damage warranty. I just received an email from them telling me they want $169 to repair it.

"The ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty (ADW) protects ASUS-branded notebook computers from accidental damage incurred from electrical surges, fire, drops, and spills. It covers the notebook itself and any built-in or onto-the-base accessories - FREE of charge. It is a one-year warranty, extending for one year from the date of purchase. One incident per laptop."

    ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty

I sent this back to them, and I'll try to call them tomorrow. I bought it about four months ago.

Wow; that is BIG! We all need to know the answer on this one. Make sure to ask what is covered if this isn't.

Also make sure to ask what is being replaced, because replacement keyboards go cheap on eBay. I am talken under $20.

Somebody had to test this sooner or later, sorry it had to be you thoe. I know it sucks to be without your laptop.

OK, I called the repair facility in CA this morning. The man told me they have no record of my registering my computer which means I'm not covered by accidental damage warranty. Well, registering the warranty was one of the very first things I did. I always do stuff like that immediately because if I don't I know I'll forget, and that was important so I did it right away. But luckily the man was a good guy and he said he'd register me right now and then they'll fix it free under the warranty. He also said that I am now covered for two years under the warranty, except the accidental damage can only be used once, which I just did. Said I should have it back in a week. They sent me photos of the inside of the computer and the damage done by the liquid (Dogfish 90 Minute ale - good stuff, but I guess not so good for computers).

    Hi guys,
i have a problem. Restart after entering windows maybe 70% of all starts. I disabled auto restart and now i have BSOD instead of restarting. I tried googling what this BSOD means but it can be everything (hardware, software, programs).
The problem started two weeks ago.

    - If I can start then everything running normally. Problem only with starting OS.
    - I tried reinstall system
    - I tried changing SEAGATE XT HDD for OCZ 120GB SSD Vertex2 and then reinstall again
    - I tried changing RAM (3 different ram modules) in each slot
    - official newest driver from ASUS site, after third reinstall i use only Windows 7 drivers for everything expect USB 3.0 and ATI (official 10.10 and older 10.7)
    - BIOS newest
    - I tried unplug all USB devices. Only cable i have pluged in is PSU (i tried 2 different PSU)

    thx for advice

Well it went from bad to worst for me 4 days ago regarding my freezing problem.

I had a freeze, & I hit the power switch like I usually have to do. It restarted, then a BSOD came up, then it loaded the OS up, then the BSOD again & then it proceeded to restart itself. It cycled like this, & would have continued to loop like this until I decided I had no alternative but to throw in my recovery disk & do a fresh install. I then loaded my image/snap shot of C: Haven't seen another freeze since I did it.

As I've said, I ain't no tech-head in this area but I seem to have solved it...

Is the bluescreen 0x00000116 and blaming atikmpag.sys (if you use the oldest drivers on Asus site then it will probably be atikmdag.sys)?

For the random freezing issue I had to set the CPU to 100% frequency in the OS power settings while plugged in for maximum processor state, this stopped my random freezes (temps are fine and didn't rise from the speed increase either). Did it 3 times to be sure and it clearly stopped them.

Wow - they are messing with me now!

Since I was told last week that I'd have my computer back this week, I called Asus to ask about the status. I was told that all they know is that it's still at the repair facility.

I then called the repair facility in CA. The guy I spoke to this time said he didn't know what was happening and he'll email me or I can call back.

    Just received this email:

We're sorry to inform you that your ASUS notebook computer is not qualified for this ADW program, because your ASUS notebook computer may be either subject to different product warranty terms or the purchase of your ASUS notebook computer was made prior to Sept. 10, 2007. For example, certain retailers require notebook vendors to provide one-year product warranty only for notebooks selling at their stores.

Deny Reason: did not register within 60 days 60th day would be 10-13-10

Please contact your original dealer for more information, if you still need to get the accidental damage warranty program for your ASUS notebook computer.

    Thank you for choosing ASUS.

"Deny Reason: did not register within 60 days 60th day would be 10-13-10".

Untrue. I followed the directions and registered the day after I bought it.

I'll call them back and post results.

P.S. I just found out that if I buy a computer through Costco and pay with Am. Ex. it is automatically covered for three years, plus Costco will handle the warranty and give tech support, so in the future I'll try to do that (as I just did with my Hannspree 12")

    Hi to you all,

I'm a new member on this forum and I come here to get some infomation about a new laptop I'm planning on buying. I saw on tigerdirect that the new N71JQ XT1 was at only 899$. Can somebody explain me why it is less expansive than the X1 which cost 1249 on every website.... From what I can see, the XT1 has a better processor and all the same specs for less.... Is there something I don't see. Does the X1 has something more than the XT1 that I can't get?

My second question concerns the hard drive of the laptop. The XT1 comes with a 500GB hard drive with 5400 rpm. I can see that there is a 7200 rpm hard drive in the X1. Should I update it for a 7200 rpm ? Is there a significative difference in the loading time with a 7200 rpm or I won't really see it ?

Hope I'm gonna have answers soon, cuz I need to order my laptop really soon.

Last question: Will I be able to play games such as Diablo 3 when it will be avalaible? Does the HDD has an impact on gaming and on surfing on the internet?

Thanks a lot for your future answer

    1. Look closely at the specs to see the differences

    2. Buy the X1 with the faster HD already in it, unless the price difference is more than $100.

I, thanks to you... I finally ordered the XT1 ! It has a better processor (i7 1,73GHz instead of 1,6 GHz in the X1). I paid 899 and the X1 was 1249 on Newegg ! I found it was more interesting getting a faster processor for 350$ less..... especially because you can easily change the HDD if it's not ok...

Now, do you think I should upgrade it to a 7200 rpm or I shouldn't worry about it.... Does the difference really worth it or it's a little bit better, but not that much?

I'm with you. I also went with the XT1 because simply, it's a better deal. I already have a PS3, so I won't be needing the Blu-Ray and hard drives are much less expensive than processors. What I did after buying this bad a computer was stick 8GB of Ram in it and bought a new 7200rpm hard drive. (I will be using the 5400rpm drive for my PS3). ASUS told me that it was only capable of running 1066MHz ram which I think is bull, but I bought it anyways because I didn't want to buy 1333MHz ram and have it downclocked, so I stayed on the safe side. Plus the 1333MHz CL9 is only slightly faster than the 1066MHz CL7 on the benchmarks. Plus you can OC the 1066 and you cannot the 1333 if you ever feel like it. I also bought the hard drive because there is a big difference in speed with the 7200 vs the 5400. This is the problem I have ran into... I do not know where the slot is for the HD... Call me stupid, but I do not want to risk damaging components and parts due to tearing my laptop apart... It's so beautiful. So I hope I've helped you out on your quest. Could you please assist me on mine!? Or anybody for that matter. There are no manuals for this computer anywhere and ASUS is no help. I'd be happy to share my knowlege about Ram and Hard drives as well if you have any questions. Please help me!!! My hard drive is comming in today!

Oh and Second question. I'm sort of a noob working on laptops... This is my first. I installed the Ram and seems to work fine, but I was wondering how hard it is to damage the ram slots. I didn't think the ram was sitting properly and pushed pretty hard, but I don't think hard enough to break it. Just wondering how much pressure they can take before it goes to far down and could cause damage and work incorrectly.

    Thanks
    Tristan

    Hi tristan,

First thanks a lot for your answer. I chose it pretty much for the same thing... I don't need the Blu-Ray since I also have a ps3. for your question, I'm sorry I can't help... I don't really know computer... that's the reason why I've came here. Anyway, hope somebody is going to be able to answer you. When I ordered my laptop, since I'm from Canada, I couldn't have the rebate that is on the amercian Tigerdirect website. I just called the company and he offered me some stuffs. However, I didn't choose the HDD because I really didn,t know which one would fit in my laptop and because I wasn't quite sure I would be able to change it... Just like you, I don't really know how to do it and I wasn't sure on what I needed. What did you choose for your new 7200 rpm ?

Wow, that was a good buy. I didn't know they upgraded the proc. With regard to the HD; yes I would replace it with a Western digital 500.00 GB Black 7200rpm HD. You can get one from NewEgg for about 80 bucks. You will see a slight but significant performance increase.

    Enjoy your new toy

Replacing HDD is very easy. You can have a look at the following thread that I created. In there you will find the link to the disassembly manual:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/507561-n71jq-backlight-keyboard-implementation.html#post6567857
Or the direct link to it: http://hotfile.com/dl/84397985/b319264/Disassemble_N71VN_Series_Chapter_02-v1_0.pdf.html

The disassembly guide says N71VN model, but it's the same guide for N71JQ.

I think N71JQ-X1-AK can tell us about this. He has the XT1 model and he is going to replace his 5400rmp HDD with 7200rpm.

@ N71JQ-X1-AK When you open the HDD bay, can you please look if there is a connector to connect secondary HDD as it is shown in the disassembly guide?

All N71JQ has two HDD bays, but on X1 the connector necessary to connect secondary drive is missing.
As far as I know this connector can not be bought anywhere until now.

I bought the ASUS 17.3" N71JQ-X2 Laptop from Wal-Mart online. I received it yesterday.

It had freezing issues as well. I noticed the paperwork was dated 2009. I returned it to Wal-Mart store last night.

I ordered another one online. I really liked the look and feel of this laptop. If the new one I get is of the same manufacture date will it likely have freezing issues as well? Are these pretty quickly repaired and returned with Asus service?

    Thanks for any help. :)

Hello, sorry I've been out for work. I will be putting in my hard drive as soon as possible when I get back.

Buy the computer!! It does not have 2 slots for hard drives, but here is a 100 dollar off coupon, which is better than my 50 dollar I found.

    Asus N71JQ-XT1 Intel Core i7-740QM Quad-Core 17.3in Laptop w/ USB 3.0 & Discrete GPU $799.99 Deal - Reviews and Compare Prices

As for the hard drive, Dave is correct. The best 7200 rpm hard drive is in fact the one he stated.

    I purchased here

    Happy Holidays I'll be back!!

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and would like to provide information on the laptop and the connection of the second hard disk.
I opened my laptop (photo attached) and I found a very similar connection to M-SATA format in RAM memory compartment near the wifi module.

There is also a hole through which the cable can pass a second hard disk compartment. I ordered the M-SATA adapter to test it.
Please compare the adapter to the motherboard picture ... I think it may be valid.

I hope that the information is helpful ... by the way, I'm Spanish and I use the Google translator ;)

Hi, I own one of those notebooks since september and i was very happy with it until few days ago.
All my games (litteraly all of them) that used to run on full details at high FPS , now start normally and i can play for a few mins without trouble, then the fps drops and it is like playing an ultra slow motion :s !!

if i alt tab back to the desktop, then wait a bit then replay the game , then it reworks for a bit before redoing the same thing i described above.

I have run a full virus check and defragmented the hard drives but i cant seem to find the solution to the issue.

This has been occuring for the last three days for no obivous reasons.

If anyone has an idea or has had the same trouble, could you guide me ?

    thank you

What you have indicated in your photos as SATA port is actually the secondary full sized mini-PCI-E port. This black port which is back-to-back with the half-mini-PCI-E port of WLAN could be used to plug is some PCI-E TV card for example.

I have N71JQ which comes with two HDDs. What is missing in your model is an extension arm. This is a rigid piece of PCB that has on one side Micro-SATA connector and on the other side it has a small plug that screws to the mainboard.
The tiny plug for extension arm which is much smaller than the mini-PCI-E plug and the SATA connector for DVD drive and where this special arm for the secondary HDD connects is very close to the hole in the casing which goes to the secondary HDD. This plug lies very close to the place where you see two silver colored standing screw holes in the memory compartment. These two empty screw holes are supposed to screw a full sized mini-PCI-E adapter.

If you want to build this connection arm then you have to find a compatible mini-plug to connect to mainboard at some electronic store.
You can then solder a micro SATA cable to this mini-plug.
This is the micro-sata cable that I mean:
12" Micro SATA Cable 16 Position Socket for SSD and 1.8" HDD

Did you check if the GPU is not overheating?

It could be a GPU overheating issue.

Re my computer that I damaged by spilling, covered by Asus accidental damage warranty. I sent it in over three weeks ago. Just called them again and again told that they are awaiting a new motherboard from Taiwan and don't know when it will arrive. I asked if I could get a new computer if they can't fix mine in a reasonable time. Man said he'll discuss case with his supervisor and call me back.

My first laptop was an IBM Thinkpad. Once I sent it in for repair. They fixed it and sent it back overnight mail the very next day.

That's right the fan problem was solved with bios v208.
So if yours came with that then you will not have this issue.

If in doubt of whether you have latest bios of not then you can check it with CPU-Z.
You will find the bios version under the Mainboard tab sections.
You can get the latest version of CPU-Z from here:
    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

You can use a tool like Everest Ultimate or HWMonitor to check the temperatures of your system.
You can download HWMonitor from here: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

This laptop seems to be the only one with everything want to far (dual HDD bay, 1Gb video card, at least an i5, and an usb 3, under or very close to CA 1000$). Thing is, I would need to add an ssd in the second bay which is empty on the XT1. I read some time ago that there was no module to add one. Is it still true? Would you know another laptop that would have what I need if it is true?

EDIT: wouldn't that be the part? http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=67674_75578_137884_182228_182240 . Bracket are next to it. A bit costly, but to add suck an increased speed I think it is worth it.

    Turbogear,

You did that excellent keyboard mod. Could you (or others familiar) tell me how long is the ribbon cable for the original keyboard, and more or less where it attaches to the keyboard? I mean, center or edge of underside of the keyboard?

I'm asking because several N73 owners are looking to order the N71 chiclet style (which is better than what we got with our machines, I think). The measurement of the keyboard and the layout are the same, but we'd like to be sure the ribbon cable is the same length and leading out from near the center of the keyboard. We are guessing it is the same...

    Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    hello there, folks.

im having trouble removing the memory cover so that i can add more memory. Now is there only three screws that need to be removed or four? I've managed to take three out, but fourth one on the bottom left side is placed much deeper than the other three....what am I doing wrong? I've been trying to open it for the past two and a half hours.

    Hello,

I recently switched out my RAM modules on the XT1. You have to remove ALL of the screws, even the one that is placed deeper then the rest. On my computer I had to wedge a computer sized flat head screw driver along the sides of the memory panel to get it off. I did have to work it out and it took a little bit because I did not want to damage my computer.

I did my research and found that when working on your computer it is smart to: Take off the battery, press the power button to drain excess power from CPU, be naked (static reasons), work on a floor (not carpet), use a static strap or touch a ground before continuing and while in the process of switching out the ram. (I used the piping from my kitchen sink) and place the ram modules in a static free bag or on something that does not create or posses static.

If after you wedge out the panel, replace modules and test ram with a program such as Memtest86+ (the best after much research), do about 8-10 passes and make sure it is working before getting rid of your previous set of Ram modules.

After that it is tested and true. Have a great holiday!

Go to Control Panel/Programs and Features and uninstall stuff you don't need? Or is that too simple? :)
