Almost a month since I sent it in now - I sent it in Dec. 1 - they said they started working on it Dec. 6 - and I still can't get an answer from them as to when I'll get it back.

Yeah, too simple - because you need to research almost every item, at least i do - because they sure don't make it easy - and even then I'm liable to accidentally remove something good and leave on something bad.

PS I love this little $400 12" Hannspree that I bought to fill in for my Asus while Asus repair has it indefinitely for repair. It came with no bloatware at all!

Sorry if this question has already been answered, but did anyone receive recovery disks/ASUS driver cd's with their purchase of the N71jq? The only recovery disks I have are the 4 DVD's I burned upon receiving the laptop.

Additionally, is it possible to do a clean install with these 4 DVD's? Do I boot from the first recovery DVD or just run it within windows?

Hello all. I just picked up a 23" monitor made by ASUS and it has HDMI, DVI, and VGA. Whats the best way to connect the monitor to the laptop?

    Happy New Years!!

Wouldn't a plain HDMI cable be easiest? Otherwise you'd need an HDMI to DVI converter, and it would only work for the monitor.

VGA could work, but I think the signal quality of HDMI is better.

If you can hook up HDMI to HDMI, then that kind of cable could be used on newer HDTV's too.

Use what you have on hand, or buy a plain HDMI (both ends) cable.

Happy New Years to you too!

Ya im goning the HDMI way, it is much cleaner way to connect it. I do have a nice 3 or 4 foot hdmi cable that will fit my need. Im just waiting on a computer desk that i orderd from overstock.com to fit the monitor next to the laptop. I just hope i get no dead pixals on it.

Could somebody please be kind enough to pop off their keyboard and measure the ribbon cable? And tell me roughly where it attaches to the keyboard? (Center, near the edge?) N73 owners would like to know if your (better looking) keyboard will fit.

    Thanks!

Oh, Meanangel, I think the motherboards on the N71 and N73 only support dual channel, not triple. Your chips should work fine.

Make sure you have BIOS ver. 1.08, if not install it.

    Dave

Where do you see that? Dual Channel just means a matched set. the Mobo determins if they are used as dual channel or not. I am sure they are, because triple channel requires 3 slots and we only have 2.

I checked the specs against crucial and kingstons web sites and they are the same.

If you put it in the worst thing that can happen is that the computer will not boot.

Have had a TigerDirect N71JQXT1 for a few weeks. All well 'till this morning when one of the arrow key's cap popped off. No sign of any retaining clip or any other parts, but maybe I missed it. Any suggestions on how to proceed...? Thanks.

The keyboard should have a couple of small tabs on the scissors, these lock into small slots in the keyboard cap. If there aren't any tabs left, or you broke the slots on the key, you either need a replacement key or a new keyboard.

Thanks! Not sure what "the scissors" is but in looking more there is a black bracket which remained attached to the key (see photo) and which popped off when I tried to snap the key cap back on. The bracket does indeed appear to be missing a projection on the top left that the key cap would snap on to. Will ASUS send me a replacement bracket? Or is there a quicker/easier source that won't cost alot? The key itself functions correctly.

Yeah it does look busted, that's too bad. I'm not sure if you can get a replacement for that, usually you'd just replace the keyboard. Sometimes there are replacement keys on eBay, you might be able to find a spare keyboard or one of those "1 key, any key" auctions and ask for that black part. Unfortunately those tend to stretch a bit before they snap, so you'd be unlikely to be able to superglue it back on, but you could try.

I just put in my order last weekend for this awesome laptop and I was wondering if the web cam functionality is still lacking as I have read in a few places that it did not work very well, but a lot of these comments seemed a bit older...

the webcam is not working very well (at least on my laptop). The colours are not good if you don't have enough light, which is quite normal, but the main issue is that the number of fps is very low, resulting in a video which is not fluent at all.

Yeah, even though this laptop has a so called webcam, I wouldn't even consider using it. It's more like a toy than anything. Dedicated webcams like a Philips 900NC for me.

I currently have 2 hdd in my N71. What would I need to check if I want to replace one with an SSD. Some of my questions are
    1. Do I need a special connector?
    2. Is there a way to recognize which one is empty? (I guess the slave one)
    3. I'm not totaly sure about those master/slave thing, or bootable drive. If I place the SSD as primary, will I still be able to boot from the second drive that will still have my windows installation?
    4. Will the recovery DVD I made will work to install windows on the SSD.
    5. Would cloning my windows partition from the HDD to the SSD work? I bought acronis and would be glad to make my spent money worth it

    No
The primary HD is the one in the middle, that is the one you want to replace. There is no slave with SATA
No, you do not want to. Install windows on the SSD. It will be much faster. You need a Windows Disk: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
If you are not confortable installing Windows find someone that is.
Do not use that, because your new hardware config is different. You need a Windows install CD, the key on the bottom of your laptop, and the drivers disk that came with you laptop. Just install the drivers after Windows, that is all you need.

I know that I should install windows on the SSD. But before I do, will I still be able to boot? Or do I need to install windows again before being able to use the laptop.

Ty for telling me about the SATA thing, stupid computer classes needs to get an update -_-

You will need to install Windows first. Don't feel bad about asking questions, that the best way to learn this stuff.

Let me explain your config a little more. First the HD in the middle is the primary or boot drive. It is the one that has Windows on it already. Take it out and set it aside, you want to keep it as is, so you can put it back in if you ever need warrantee work, or if you want to test something with the factory install.

Before you do anything else get a Windows 7 Home Preimum 64 bit install disk. Actually all of the 64 bit versions are on one disk and all of the 32 bit versions are on another disk. Just get the 64 bit version and make sure you choose Home Preimum during the install process. There is a valid and unique key on the bottom of your laptop.

Install the SSD, it is easy; it goes in the same way the old HD was in the first place. Leave the other HD alone, you want to use that as a place to put all of your data, media, whatever. After you install the SSD, put the Windows disk in the dvd drive and boot. The installer will boot from the cd and you will be able to install on either drive, so make sure you choose the SSD. Windows will see that you have an SSD and configure itself for it. When you have finished installing windows put in the drivers and software disk that came with your laptop. Install all of the drivers. You can add ASUS software at the same time, but I do not, mostly because it is not very useful and it slows down the computer.

All of this effort is worth it, because adding an SSD makes these things fly.

If you have any more questions, post 'em up here and we will try to help.

    Dave

I am currently waiting on my N71 to arrive but I am becoming a little worried as I have not seen the display in person and I have read in multiple locations that people thought the resolution was a little low.

I am primarily going to be doing graphics and video work so the screen real estate is somewhat important...

For those of you that have these how is the display for you, do you even notice that it has the lower resolution?

resolution is 1600 x 900 . My previous laptop had 1366x768. It depend on you if it's enought or not. For me it's perfect.

Yeah; I would say the same thing. You have to rember that this is a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, so 1600 x 900 is fine for me. It is the N61 that has the 1366 x 768 screen. That really sucks on a 16 inch laptop. That is one of the biggest reasons I went with larger N71JQ. The other reason was the second HD which allows the use of a SSD as the boot drive.

Maybe it's my router, I've had some problem with it recently with another computer, but some times while i'm gaming, I lost the internet wireless connection, but I stay connected to the AP. I turn off and on the wireless card and it goes back online insantly.

    Have anyone got that issue?

And is there a newer version than the one on asus support?

Yaeh; it could be your router, but try this first: Newegg.com - Intel 622AN.HMWWB Mini PCI Express 6200 Centrino Advanced-N Wireless Adapter Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA, WPA2

I upgraded mine and it helped with speed and stablility both. You cannot beat the price and it is a piece of cake to install.

As soon as I get a job, yea, this could probably happen. I had quite a big amount of cash saved (for my age), finished my job, then bought a car (still not paid), a new laptop, lots of drink... And now I see that my account starts to drop a bit too much lately XD.

Can you believe it is sold 55$ elsewhere XD.

Currently waiting patiently on the FedEx guy to show up today with my N71.

I thought I remembered reading that they came with the HD's partitioned in an odd way but I cannot seem to find anything about this...

Is this true or am I possibly mistaken?

The reason is I am wondering if it would make sense to do a fresh install of Windows 7 once I receive the laptop?

Mine is coming with the 2 320GB HDs, does anyone have a suggestion as to have to partition this if I was to do a fresh install? Should I at all?

For anyone who cares to know I bought this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Corsair...&skuId=1623588&st=CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9&cp=1&lp=1
and it worked in my N71JQ-A1 just fine. I was waiting for Kingston to come back in stock at NewEgg, but they pushed it back again. That and I got a nice $100 BustBuy gift cert for Christmas. BestBuy only has Corsair in 1333.

Notice that this is a two pack, if it were a dual channel kit it would actually be the same thing, because the mobo determins the channel mode. The only requirement is that the two sticks have the same part no.

    Dave

You can run it as delivered. The partition setup is pretty common. A hidden restore partition, 200MB hidden for Win7 Boot, and the rest of the HD for Windows and apps install.

My advice is do what I did. Buy a good SSD and use it to replace the primary HD then do a clean install of Win7 and just install the drivers from the ASUS CD. I added the Wireless Consol 3 app, but it is not required.

You can get a 64 GB SSD for about $130 and trust me it makes a big difference.

I know this isn't necessarily the way to measure the system but I am wondering why the graphics are so low with the 2.0 score.

Is it just because it switches back and forth between the integrated graphics and the video card?

Thanks for the info, figured out I had missed a bunch of updates. After I updated everything went up quite closer to yours.

Id assume your HD is SSD?

Besides that and the memory score match up since I only have 4gb

Well like you said in the first place, Windows is not very accurate. I am kinda supprised that it could be that far off though.

Looked like it might just not have been recognizing the video card, but then I realized there was something like 50 windows updates that were pending so once I let those run it showed up an some of the other stuff went up slightly also.

Dave, what are your ssd speeds? I got 7.7 on mine, which is also a 60GB.. Mine has (from manufacturer, they are about 20MB/s slower tested) 285 read and 275 write

I am getting 7.0, but that does not tell you that much. Windows benchmarks are not very accurate. Also my SSD is a Western digital SiliconEdge which has good specs, but it is no longer the latest and greatest.

If you go back through this thread you will see Trubo and others with results from more accurate tools like HDTunePro and AS SSD. I think AS SSD is free and it is the most accurate, because it is designed speciffically for SSDs.

    My overall score was 104

7.7 is a good score for Windows. What SSD did you end up with?

An OCZ vertex 2, they recommend atto benchmark. I still would have tought any ssd would have better. But yea, WEI sux :p.

Do you have a firmware that has TRIM enabled? Maybe that could help if not

Yah; WD supports TRIM, but they do not have the sandforce controller which is the happening way to go right now. I will upgrade to something larger when the price comes down a little more.

I really like the OCZ stuff, it is just flat fast. I have one of their Revo drives in my desktop and it's the bomb.

Wow: check this out Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTX80G 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

$145 after mail in rebate. Where is my VISA card.
