They have some anti-static glass cleaner that may help. I live in a dusty environment also and am constantly cleaning my screen also.

Heya buddy! Well, things are still a bit crazy here. Nichol moved in about 2 weeks ago and we are still trying to get everything settled.

I have so many projects "half" done that I hope I am going to finally find time to get back to everything now that she is here all the time. She wants me to try and get back into my projects now that she is here. She actually likes it when I get into the geek projects because she knows they are productive. It is just trying to find time to work on them that is the issue now.

How is everything going with you? Did you get your system back yet?

All is well David, I spent the last 2 days doing Demo of my kitchen. Man Demo is fun! :D I got my laptop back a week ago with the new motherboard. It has bios version 206. So you know I have to jump back on the horse and do a proper bios flashing to version 210. I used the recovery partition to start fresh.I don't keep much stored on this thing so I find the recovery partition very handy to get a clean slate. I still love this laptop man!
Glad things are going well for you. Have fun with your geek projects and I'll have fun tearing my house down.
Speaking of geek projects (backlit keyboard)

In case any of you are interested the replacement model is being released approximately end of August, early September. The N53JQ-A1 will have nearly all the same spec as the N61JQ but with the nVidia GT425M 1GB GDDR 3 GPU. It will also go down to a 15.6" Screen. Will come with 500GB 7200/720QM/4GB DDR3.

Greg i really hope you get the flash right this time, BIOS updates have always frightened me, especially after hearing about your failed 210 update. i know you went ahead with the updating because many other users were talking about successful bios updates at that time. i was almost convinced too. :)

i have been following this thread right from the beginning, i made my purchase through amazon in march and had it shipped to the US. now its on a long journey from the US - India - Mumbai - Bangalore.
the arrival of my laptop has been delayed to the 20th of July. oh man, i can't wait, have read so much about this laptop.

does anyone use this laptop for college/work ? i would like to hear a bit about the mobility of this laptop. any issues ? and any suggestions on what kind of bag one should buy, e.g. shoulder bag, back-pack ..

oh and this is my first laptop :) that explains all the enthusiasm :D

This laptop is on the heavy side, and using a messenger bag instead of a backpack to carry it around is difficult. I use a backpack whenever I need to bring the laptop with me.

Can you please post your temps once you get yours? I just want to know the numbers> idle, normal, and gaming/max load.

I'm a student and I use this laptop. Because I'm stubborn, I carry it everywhere, and this thing, while it's light for its size, is pretty heavy if you carry it in a shoulder bag. I would suggest a proper backpack.

I still plan on doing the keyboard. I am going to order the parts this weekend. I got a little strapped with Nichol's moving expenses and having to pay the pet deposits for the dogs (I just got one and Nichol had one).

I am getting a new version of andLinux ready so I hope it wont take too much more of my time. The new installer is going to have advertisements and I still need to complete the work on it also. I have a few companies that have been waiting for it to be ready and have one that is practically harassing me about it. So, I need to make that a priority also.

Anyway, use the Win Flash app when you do the BIOS. I think you will be fine using it.

    hi David

any tips on using win flash? i heard it would be wise to exit any anti-virus software, plug into the mains, and disconnect any other gadgets from the laptop. is there anything i am missing?

    thanks

....man...my rep power states that, "I'm an unknown quantity at this point"....how degrading.... :(

I don't know. The package says nothing about antistatic but it says "Protects your LCD Screen from accidental scratches, dust, dirt, fingerprints and more. Frameless design is set onto the LCD screen without adhesive."

OK every one, i was looking through amazon , and came across an Anti-Glare Screen Protector. now we know that the ASUS N series comes with really glossy screens, which are bad to work with in bright conditions. i am guessing this would be the solution:

Amazon.com: Green Onions Supply Anti-Glare AG2 Screen Protector for 15.6-Inch Widescreen Laptop with Micro-fiber Wiping Cloth: Electronics

this link is for 15.6" screens, you might have to look for 16" screens. if anyone tries this then please post your results.

My machine is starting to get sluggish after installing too many programs. I am thinking of doing a clean install. Has anyone ever used the recovery partition on this laptop before? Does it only erase the data on the C: drive? Also, if I have installed a bunch of programs on D, will they run if I do a clean install on C?

    Thanks for the help

I posted this back in post #4622. Hope it helps:

-Reboot the computer and start fresh.
-Close any background apps that may start.
-Disable firewall, spyware and anti-virus software.
-Don't use the computer while flashing.
-Reboot only if the flash was successful. Otherwise, download a new file and flash again.

There are too many cheaply made flash drives for me to feel comfortable with using those. So, WinFlash is my main utility and has been for years.

Recovering from the hidden partition is real fast, press F9 on start-up, read the instructions carefully so that you choose just to erase the C partition but in any case DO a backup of your data.

Your programs will not run after a fresh installation.

I'm glad I got the N61 then. The 16" screen is just the right size for me. 15.6 is just a little too small, 17 is too big.

I haven't any info on that card but if it follows nVidia's normal naming convention it should perform slightly worse than the card in the N61JQ.

In my opinion the nvidia chips are loo large and complex to make viable notebook parts. The new case ASUS showed off at CES looks very nice though.

Beat me to the post. For everyone posting about temp issues, take a cue from your N61 and chill out.

I doubt it's that efficient either, seems the top line 480m(obile) chip draws a monstrous 100w just on it's own.

That is so funny! I know a lot of us here were looking pretty hard at the Sony F series when we stumbled on to the N61. I must have read 1500 pages on the Sony F thread. It came down to noise, heat and extra cost.
Now can we please get all the thermal dorks worried about the N61 to just chill out. There is no heat issue with the N61JQ no matter what your little thermal dork tests say! :D

Well I finally lost my bios flash virginity :D! I just flashed to version 210 from 206. I went with Davids recommendation and used Winflash. Obviously I can't give any advice on which is the better way to flash. And I don't want to start the winflash versus Easyflash debate. But I would like to give some advice to other inexperienced bios flashers. I found Winflash a better choice. It was very clear what to do. When I used Easyflash it was not as clear on what to do and I made a wrong choice which bricked my computer.
I only flashed my bios to get rid of my bios flash virginity. To anyone who is not familiar with the flashing procedure I would still recommend sticking with the bios flashing warning. which is only flash your bios if you are having a problem with your computer and the new bios addresses the problems you are having.

I just got the Jq (think is X1) that comes with 640GB WD HDD, 208 BIOS version (Flashed to 210 with EasyFlash) and DDR3 1333MHz 4GB. The sticker on keyboard says build date on May 2010 and 24 months warranty on GPU. Which is lovely

However i took the 640GB HDD out as the test game Crysis was kind of lagging, and Windows Process was up to 77. So I decided to install 160GB and going 32bits W7 Ultimate however with the ATI CCC graphic driver i downloaded from support.ati.com doesn't detect the GPU and install driver. I was forced to use OEM CCC from the Asus DVD so CCC + driver = installed.

So, what the hell was that that official ATI CCC doesn't detect this 5730?

Finally, did a couple of things which I held off:
    1. reformatted drive (shows only 300GB) and installed personal copy of Win7
    2. flashed BIOS to 210 using WinFlash with no problems
    3. updated all the drivers (hotkeys, USB3.0, card reader, chipset, audio, WLAN, BT, Wireless Console, ATI Catalyst, printer) except the camera (which of the listed drivers shoud I use?)
    4. reinstalled ExpressGate, Office07

After all of that, the N61 felt a lot faster and more responsive...nothing like a fresh install.

Talk about temperature is around 71 Celsius on GPU and 75 on CPU when playing Crysis. And it gets down to 56 / 54 when closed the game for 5 seconds. Just wow by the difference.

The TDW seems abit high it worries me.. Anyone tried Arctic Silver 5 and Diamond IC thermal paste or any extreme cooling methods? Please share :D

Up until now you could not change your notebook review user name without crashing the data base. It is my great pleasure to introduce you to my new user name GregW. Thanks to the help of lead NBR moderator Charles P Jefferies and his Admin crew I have been freed of the shackles of my wifes user name. :D :D :D
