The n61 is a very capable gaming machine and workstation. One last note some games just aren't that fun on a console compared to a PC (StarCraft II). -
Hi guys I just wanna chime in and give y'all an update. I've been kinda busy with moving to another country and all so I haven't been following the forum. It sure has doubled in size since I left (at around 300 pages).
Well, I ordered an optical drive hard drive caddy from ebay for $12. It shipped from hong kong and took a little over two weeks to arrive but it was well worth the wait. I installed a second 500gb hard drive (7200rpm) and it works perfectly!!
I just need to get a fast ssd drive to replace the 320gb that came with the lappy. (still too expensive though, maybe by christmass they'll come down in price)
Also, I haven't had any problems at all with this laptop. no bsods or anything, not even peeling. I'm sorry to hear some of y'all are having problems. -
Something like this- Bravo View 400-Watt Power Inverter
or
XOvision-Car-Power-Inverter-w-Game-Port
Im not a walmart fan or anything, but they do have really good deals online
Man, Monday isn't coming fast enoughI can't wait.

I am experiencing hangups. Sometimes my n61jq runs like a 1997 gateway desktop. I also have gotten about one BSOD every 2 months since I have gotten the laptop in February from Amazon. But the hangups started happening last week. Very Disappointing!!!
I have noticed when I get a BSOD it says its due to a hardware failure.
What should I do? My tech skill isn't that great. Mostly because I rather not screw something up. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -

finally i have my laptop
, now one question , how do i use the 4 dvds to reinstall, this laptop starts up so quickly no time to press the appropriate button. is there a button i need to press, how do i use the dvds.
thanks -
You can press F9 to get to the system restore.
-
sorry, figured it out. had to change boot priority.
EDIT: it was mentioned earlier that if i restore with the dvds, win 7 will be installed without the bloatware. this is not true, after enduring a painstaking process of installing from the 4 dvds, well to my disappointment all the bloatware was still in existence.
how do i reinstall with out the bloatware, and where can i get the option to partition my drive in any size and any number of drives. -
Hello everyone, I just got mine a few days ago and I'd be really thankful if you could help out with these two issues:
1) Is there a way to turn off the lights on the sides of the speakers? The blinking in sleep mode is really annoying (it also consumes valuable power doesn't it?)
2) The webcam has a very low fps output and its too sluggish, even when offline and just using Lifeframe for example. Is there a solution to this? I already have the latest webcam driver installed.
Thanks. -

Those 15GB of data are just image of the installed Windows. And you're just copying whatever is on the HDD.
The clean OS itself is only 2.7GB one DVD, and 3.4GB for 64bits (i think)
Installed clean OS and latest drivers, never had any issue. Been gaming for 12 hrs straight on that thing
About the side lights, i noticed it got turned off couple times when resume from sleep. However it does not work always. -
sorry but then how do i get the clean OS install ? -
Ow, sorry i should have stated clearer before. I personally have Ultimate edition so i just install on top.
But my second thought for you; download Windows 7 HomePrem 64bit ISO from somewhere with legit hash checksum from MSDN, TechNet. Burn to DVD, and use the existing Windows Key from on the laptop.
I can only hope the key works. You can try install it on your extra blank 2'5 HDD, second way to risk it erase current OS or install to other partition. And i hope that does not break piracy rule. -
Think I am departing windows to go mac. I am considering selling my system, so if anyone in the UK wants to PM me with offer then go for it. Only thing I ask is you must have an ebay account with 100% positive feedback and a reputation of 20 or more.

All kidding aside, sorry to see you go... -
I recently got this laptop and i love it to death aside from one problem (which is driving me crazy). The problem is the webcam. It's super sluggish and does my movements a second or 2 after i do them in real life. I did what i was only able to do and that was to download the webcam's driver (azurewave version 5.8.54000.207) but that didn't seem to do anything. I don't know what to do... Idea's and suggestions please?

I just bought a N61JQ-X1, and when im playing RE5 it gets hot, GPU got 78°C, and CPU 75°C after an hour. ¿Is that normal?, and someone know about a good cooler to this notebook, and for those how test one, what the difference in degrees
Im new on notebook, so I dont know much, ¿Can someone help? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Those temps are actually pretty low. GPU and CPU temps can go well over 90c and even into the low 100c range.
-
So, I dont need a cooler?
I play RE5 a little more, and the RealTemp mark in the CPU 84°, so thats not a problem?
PD: Thanks for the help -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
No worries, those temps are fine.

Finally got mine today!!! Spent 5 hours installing my software, and uninstalling crapware, and then guess what!!?!? It would refuse to assign a drive letter to all my usb and my blu ray. so had to start all over, cause system restore didn't do schmidt. Aside from the crappy battery life, im liking it very well. And thanks for all your support guys!

The MacOS is fantastic but I would rather put MacOS on my ASUS then deal with the Mac hardware again. Yes, they do make a nice solid laptop and you will love how responsive everything is. The multi-touch touchpad is second to none and the screen was very a nice matte LCD (I had the July 2008 model and was the last version they put out before the washout issues). I am not sure if they do matte screens anymore but, if they do, it is the one to get. Their glossy screens are a little overly glossy.
Other then that, it was a well built machine but, Apple has no idea how to deal with heat. It was to the point of being unbearable. The keyboard always had to be remapped because it is just a tad non-standard. Games always ran a bit slower on my Mac then on an equivalent PC. And, finding software for it was always a pain in the arse.
Don't get me wrong, all-in-all I would love a Mac desktop but, I would only get a Macbook again if I needed to get one. -
Also, wouldn't imagine anyone would want your laptop after all the problems you seem to have had with yours....
I sure love my Asus though! yuk yuk yuk -
Can you post your hardware device ID to verify you are using the proper driver for your hardware: go in Device Manager => Imaging Devices => (your webcam properties) => Details => Hardware IDs. -

My optimzed gaming temp is now staying around 55C GPU and around 58C for CPU playing games at full power
thumbs up for thermal dork!
You can't use a cooler on this laptop as you see there's no vent right under the system. But again to remind you guys, heat kills hardware components.
Btw I did notice the webcam suck but there's nothing to do to fix at the moment. I'm rather shocked how crap the webcam is compare to my cheap brandless chinese built netbook which have 30 frames per sec smoothness at 640x res. -
Hi! My N61JQ-A1 display has developed a very tiny gray spot. At first I thought it was an artifact caused by ATI drivers. Reinstalled all drivers but the spot was still there. Then I tried to remove it by applying some cleaning material but it didn't budge. It is a very weird spot. It turns white when I see the screen from top and below. It doesn't behave like a dead pixel because it changes color according to the background but the area stays a bit dark. Is it a dust speck inside my LCD? Any way to clear it?

Hi, I just received my N61JQ-X1 from Amazon.com (Amazon.com has a hold on all future shipment of the X1 notebook). I like the N61JQ-X1 notebook except for the short battery life. I did a search for a longer lasting battery for the N61J notebook and came up with a company in China that is selling a Asus extended life 9 cell battery for the N61J notebook. The info that is stated is "
9C Original Battery for ASUS N61J N61JQ N61J N61W N61" for 108.00 USD which is a low price for a 9 cell battery for the N61J. The web site where I found this info is 9C Original Battery for ASUS N61J N61JQ N61J N61W N61 . Do you think that this is a deal that is just too good to be true? I really would like a longer life battery for the N61JQ-X1 notebook. This battery has a 7200mAh rating and is a 9 cell battery while the N61J has a 4400mAh rating. Or do you know where I can pick up a extended life battery for the N61J notebook. Thanks. -
Hi again, I also found an online company " ASUS N61j laptop battery 9 cell High capacity Genuine - US$299.88 : pcwith.com " that is offering an Asus N61J notebook 9 cell high capacity lithium-ion battery rated 7200mAh, 10.8v with a 12 months warranty for 299.88 USD which is a lot more money than the other company in China. I am wondering if anyone has purchase an extended life battery for the N61J notebook, how much was the battery and from what online company. Thanks.

Also, ATI catalyst 10.7 is out

So I purchased my N61JQ back in April and the machine is fantastic. Then 1 month later it literally dies (won't power on) so I RMA it. Asus takes care of it and ships it back. I've been on the road for 3 weeks and now that I am back and using it, I am noticing the same issue as posted above by 3DXtreme. I have 2 spots on the screen that look like gray spots. Weird part is it shows on both the glass right inside and the screen itself. I am dreading having to RMA it again.
Also, just curious if anyone has had problems with their keyboard. I find myself not able to type without it jumping back to the start of the paragraph. I know I have had similiar probs in the past with other laptops due to the mousepad picking up pressure. Thought they would have figured this out by now though.
Any help is appreciated....thanks. -

but thanks again stevedogg, would give you more rep++, but seems like i have given too much around -
Well I had to RMA my laptop yesterday.
I've been seeing screen artifacts randomly for about two weeks. It didn't happen often enough for me to really care about and rebooting seemed to fix it.
Well yesterday it got really bad and the OS crashed. The primary laptop display stopped working all together and only the VGA port would display anything but it had major artifacts. The OS would no boot and would crash (Linux and Windows). So I sent in an RMA.
Looks like it's a Video Card issue. I'll post my experience.
I have one question, the guy on the phone said that ASUS would send me the shipping box, but the instructions from the email say I'm responsible for the box. Does anyone that's gone through the RMA process know for sure? Am I responsible for the box or should I just wait for it to arrive? -
Artifacts is certainly produced by many dying GPUs, and you are right about that. But i'm pretty sure the main cause is heat. N61 produce massive of it.
Mentioned before is only a matter of short time before the N61 will die, but no one listens :roll eyes:
And i'm not living in the US so i don't know about the RMA thing, but if the phone guy gets your address he should be sending you the box.
