Thanks, he did get my address. You could be right, I monitored the heat on both the CPU and GPU and it was never even close to the max, even with hours of gaming. I guess I'll know more once it reaches their repair facility. I'll post more details as I get them.

    Hi guys!

I will be a proud owner of an Asus N61JQ-A1 in two days. I've been scanning these forums for quite some time in terms of which laptops were right for me or whatnot, as well as ask knowledgeable friends and family. Now that I've decided, I believe I need to make this post because otherwise I will not know what to do. I've searched up this topic before, but the ones I found were more than a year old.

Anyways, the question is, what should I do with the brand new laptop?

I have seen/heard things like reformatting, doing something with the battery, run PC Decrapifier, and lots of other tidbits. I am a total "noob" for lack of a better word when it comes to laptops, or even desktops. So it would be great for those who reply to give all the painful little details, and explain why I need to complete these tasks?

For example, I don't even have a clue what PC Decrapifier does besides what the name suggests... I do know it gets rid of bloatware, but how does it work? Can I not just manually uninstall the useless programs?

Thanks in advance for those who reply!

Do you see the boot screen. If the answer is yes then you messed up your boot partition. If the answer is no you never see anything show up on the screen when you turn it on then yeah, you probably need to RMA.

I am reading a lot of negatives recently on this thread about our beloved laptop, but honestly, in the 3 months I've had mine, I haven't had any issues whatsoever. I've done heavy video and picture editing and it works like a charm. Come one people, lets post some positive things about our laptops!!

You are right!! Well, as someone who deals with customers about products my company develops, I can tell you that complaints vs. compliments are usually 100 to 1. Even for stellar products, when someone has (legitimate) problems, they are usually much more vocal. When everything is working ok, most people don't feel a need to post.

When youre in a restaurant and the waitress screws up, you say something. When he/she does a great job, most people mention it while in the car ride on the way home...but never give feedback.

For me, the laptop has been STELLAR. Have two of them. It rocks, rocks, rocks.

As a side note, I just finished my backlit keyboard mod, and it is GREAT. Was it worth getting all the parts, etc, etc? I don't know...but it sure looks cool. LOL.

Dude, I'm editing a feature length film on this thing, connected to a larger screen and speakers via HDMI. I can't complain. Asus motherboards are recommended for intense performance requirements.

I don't see a thing. I figured as much. But I mean really? How is it gonna last me through college if it cant last me 3 days? I am seriously considering going for something else and just skip the usb 3.0, something with better battery life.

I would suggest spending some time on the first page of this lounge as you might get some ideas. Most here might disagree with this advice but my advice would be to not do much of anything to your laptop when you get it. It will work just fine right out of the box. And as a total " noob" you can just take your time figuring out what you want to do to it. Her is a driver update site provided by Stevedogg our resident authority on N61 updates http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html#post6388295.
As a total noob if you just start uninstalling, updating and reformatting you might cause yourself some problems that you are not familliar dealing with.
Whatever you decide to do from advice you get do not update your bios without doing some research first. Good luck with your N61 and let us know what you think of it. There are members here that are willing to help you. But it is helpfull if you make an attempt to do some research like reading the first page before you ask for help.

How would setting up a seperate partition with a clean windows be usefull to compare battery life? If you bought this N61 to last you through 4 years of college, good battery life, and usb 3.0 you might be wise in going for something else.

There are hardware defects with just about every product. Unless you go business grade, you have to accept some chance of that occurring. That is the reason for the warranty. Sure it's a pain but I know right now I'm glad I have it. I will say with 3 days you might want to contact the place you bought it from, they might have sold you a lemon.

I brought my N61JQ-X1 from Amazon.com a while back for $950. I am using it to store photos and videos when I am out in the field. I also do a little of photo/video editing with Photoshop Elements/Premiere with this notebook. It has work great with no problems so far. The only thing that I don't like is the short battery life. Therefore I got a power inverter to charge the battery when traveling. I am using a Quad Pack that I brought from LL Bean to carry the notebook along with a digital camera plus 5 lenses and a compact video camera. I am very please with this notebook and it is plenty fast enough for my needs. I am planning to keep this notebook for 3 to 5 years, therefore, I will be replacing the 320gb hard drive with a Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 7200RPM hard drive soon and later add more memory. I uninstall the software that I would not need and did not want to take up space on the hard drive. Everything with the N61JQ is working well. No problems so far. This is one of the best notebook that I have use. Glad that I brought it.

Not reaching the max is danger already. I used to have a Geforce Go 6000 series on my laptop it runs 87C out of 120C max. Lasted only a year. After replacement with bad thermal it get to 120C and is bad for gaming because of throttle down. Lasted 3 months. As you see the life shorten by multiplies. Since N61 is brand new so maybe just bad luck getting deflected one.

Mentioned while ago, but if only you gonna use it as desktop replacement laptop, then remove laptop's bottom cover, lift laptop up abit with books on sides, place a 8 inch (200mm) system fan powered by external 12VDC behind the LCD. There you'll have it.

And sometimes later you need to replace stock thermal compound. ;)

Download Asus Express Gate software from Asus site. And i hope you install the legit OS from BIOS POST.

I'm going to prove that myself. ;) And its USB3.0 ready :D

It looks like I too may be joining the ranks of people RMAing their N61JQs. My laptop had been performing rather flawlessly since I got it in February.

Lately, I started to notice some glitchy things; I started hearing the buzzing/morse-code sound, my bluetooth mouse would frequently disconnect and require removal/re-pairing, occasionally I would get a red LED light coming out of my headphone jack. I swapped mice with my girlfriend who has the identical model, and the disconnects kept happening to me (while both mice worked fine for her).

Very recently, I've been getting BSODs from Youtube, Viddler, etc. videos occasionally. I got one with Catalyst 10.6 just before 10.7 came out, and another with 10.7. I got a BSOD while uninstalling the ATI driver, re-installed, and got another BSOD uninstalling again. Then came the freezes; the laptop completely locks up randomly, requiring a button-hold shutoff. It's not a graphics driver issue, because it happened with no driver installed (completely removed via Control Panel and DriverCleaner.NET).

I am going to try the ASUS VGA driver and maybe restore an old hard drive image, but I fear my graphics card or other hardware is at fault. I will keep you guys posted.

EDIT: I have not been gaming on this machine FYI.

    Hello Guys,

Just purchased this laptop and so far so good, bar two issues.
    1) buttons on some webpages look fuzzy. e.g. the "Quote", "Quick Reply"...etc buttons in the threads. Any ideas?

    2) I've spent half a day looking through the posts. I cannot seem to find instructions on how to do a clean install of Windows 7 that came with this laptop. I ended-up having to make the recovery discs and no windows cd was supplied. Short of buying Windows, how can I do a fresh install?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah as you know it doesn't comes with Windows Installation CD, i told another guys earlier to download Windows HomePrem 64bits ISO over internet with legit MSDN/TechNet legit checksum and burn to DVD install and use the Key provided at the bottom of your laptop.

However is not tested whether will work or not. So i suggest to try on your extra HDD or to install on other partition then erasing exist OEM Windows.

Thanks, I hope that pack contain 32bits driver and progs. Since i'm with 32bits OS.

I'm not sure the trick as i never tried it out myself, that is to install the driver program and disable it then uninstall the program. Since it communicate with the BIOS i hope the setting will be stored in BIOS.

Omg Omg thank yoU very much! :D :D :D :D

Well, I could only get 1hr 52 minutes with the screen turned all the way down, and everything on really high battery saver. So I just wanted to compare. And thats what im starting to think too, but I might give it a second chance.

That is the Intel Active Management stuff, basically a driver datacare for RAID setup. I didn't have it installed as i thought is not necessary for single HDD based computers.

I hope the setting is gonna be perm even with the driver and progs uninstalled.

Now i can't give you the direct link since the URL is not direct, you have to enter the laptop details on the search and select 64bits OS, then go TouchPad link.

i just had a BSOD. :( i am a little worried , i have seen how people end up with dead laptops , i need this for college, i live in india, not sure how the rma is going to work out. and its going to take 2 months to get the laptop back , thats not too good for me. has anyone gotten a BSOD and had no further problems since. it would be good to hear.

i got the bsod when i took the laptop of the cooling pad and placed it on my lap. is that the problem , does anyone think i must have accidentally covered the vents. because if thats the problem, overheating, then i can make sure i never do that ever again .
oh i am scared. i don't want to loose this laptop, its sooo good. and i am really in a pickle if it turns against me.

    Hey guys, quick question...

I already registered my laptop in Asus' site, and I mailed the copy of the e-mail they sent, plus my amazon Invoice. However, I did this a week ago, and I haven't gotten confirmation from them.

They do send confirmation e-mails when they receive the mail right, or should I just resend?

Check the driver thread for the latest ATK Package driver. That will enable the hotkeys. As for the touchpad, have you tried turning off Tapping or changing the PalmTracking sensitivity in the ELAN settings? (Double-click the touchpad taskbar icon to access).

Download bluescreenview and set the dump file location (in Advanced Options) to "C:\Windows\MiniDump" to see what caused your BSOD.

well if you say so , then i will look into it , need to download the 32 bit system , do you have any good links, i hope the current win 7 keys work using the ABR utility to backup the genuine keys.

i quickly restarted the computer when the BSOD occurred, but if it happens again then i will make sure to look at the messages thoroughly.
i believe it has something to do with putting it on my lap, but again it just could have been a coincidence. but thanks again.

i will switch to 32 if i get any more problems.

Physical action shouldn't affect the software, only way that makes it sound possible is that you dropped the laptop hard on your lap caused enough vibration to HDD while its reading or writing data.

For the Windows 7 HomePrem x86 this is the legit SHA1 Hash: CC9D8220B2179E784D85BF1EA98D2EE2190D534F

Always google with valid/unmodified version of the OS. And re-verify after download. Sorry i couldn't find it for you because i'm always on shared wifi and i'm roughly limited around like dialup speed. Forums sites wouldn't load sometimes. :(

To get the hash and CRC checksum go: Subscriber Downloads | Search and download thousands of Microsoft products and get Product Keys

Select Operating Systems > Windows 7 > Scroll down til you find the OS and click on it will display info about it.
