ok, so I decided to try and hook up the laptop to my very old crt monitor and it works. So, what do u guys think the problem is? No sceen output whatsoever, but vga is just fine.
edit: tried restoring to factory defaults, but it just stays at a blue screen on vga. express gate works ok tho.

just wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing with theirs.
I've had my laptop since late March, so it's been 4 months of happy ownership.
Mine's been running pretty much flawlessly except for a few graphics driver crashes (watching Youtube of all things) that were recovered in Windows.
Played the occasional game (Team Fortress 2) and watched movies once in a while.
I have yet to experience any heat related issues except for the one time I blocked the exhaust with a book while I was watching a movie...oops. got this red band across the screen. Restarted the video and it disappeared.
I've only updated the BIOS once (to 208?) and haven't tried it again after reading of all the bricking going on.
While I love this laptop, my attention is now turned to my desktop, which I've rebuilt into a beast.i7-930, 6GB in triple, ATi 5870, 80gb Intel SSD...
Luckily I have this laptop as the diagnostics machine in case the desktop goes down. I've found this laptop to be very reliable.
Later,

For those that are playing startcraft II on your laptop look at this link:

This might have been what caused my computer to die. -

thanks for the heads up adamal

Hi all,
As a new owner of an N61JQ-JX002V I'm would like to know if the drive bay will accommodate 1TB drives that come in a 12mm form factor. I know a lot of laptops only have the room for the standard 9.5 mm size.
I'm talking about replacing the existing drive by the way, not adding a second one. -
-
Thanks but the OBHD is what I *don't* want - I want a plug in *replacement* for the existing 2.5" drive (which is 9.5mm). I want to keep my BluRay drive.

NEX_SASIN--will removing the bottom cover be safe as long as I'm sure to keep it a little elevated and away from foreign pieces of metal? What if I tried removing the bottom cover and putting it on a cooling stand so that it blows directly into the laptop?
-
OMG you thermal dorks are killing me! Take your cover off, how thermal dork OCD can you get? -
-
-
-
-
I agree. I believe it has to do with drivers. Windows recovered/restarted the drivers after the error and I went about my merry way.
-
And you should see the cooling pad will hit the airflow directly to the heatsinks when taken off the cover off the laptop. So yeah will be much cooler, my opinion is that USB cooling pads aren't powerful enough, but that's just me.
Just use your common sense for the safety and you'll be fine. -
I experience this same issue of BSOD with youtube some time ago.
The problem disappeared after I removed flashplayer and installed a fresh copy again. -
-
is it supposed to be that big , i found it in the windows folder -
-
-
-
The following link will generate a BSOD if you have Flash 10.1 and hardware acceleration enabled. Use it (at your own risk) to test if your config. is vulnerable to the Youtube/video BSOD problem.

Can someone tell me where I can check to see if I have the latest Lan/Wan/and bluetooth drivers?
-
For LAN and WLAN, go into Device Manager: Windows + Pause => Device Manager => Network Adapters. Double click your LAN or WLAN card, click the Driver tab, and look at the number. -
Hey guys, quick question...
I already registered my laptop in Asus' site, and I mailed the copy of the e-mail they sent, plus my amazon Invoice. However, I did this a week ago, and I haven't gotten confirmation from them.
They do send confirmation e-mails when they receive the mail right, or should I just resend? -
-
I will check if I have hardware acceleration off in Flashplayer.
Currently I am not working on the laptop, but maybe I will try this link to check if I get BSOD again. -
. I can visit the test page and view that video with no issues, without re-installing Flash and with hardware acceleration turned on. I am using Catalyst 10.7 now. I'm confused haha.
Edit: maybe it's because I uninstalled the ASUS VGA driver (was using it to see if the BSODs would stop) and re-installed 10.7 after realizing the hardware acceleration setting fixed the problem. I completely uninstalled the ASUS driver, ran DriverCleaner.NET, manually deleted all ATI/AMD references from the registry, and installed 10.7. Could be something in that process fixed the problem? -
Edit: Sorry, I've got one more probably stupid question. For the WAN and LAN Drivers, when you extract the files, do you use the setup that is in the main extracted file, or do you go to the "64" subfolder and use that setup.exe? -

I have laptop for a month and a half. Had no problem untill today. I noticed little to the left from the center of the screen dark vertical shadow abot 1" wide. I don't know how long ago it showed up becouse I was using monitor.

Hey, is anyone else experiencing problems with their USB 3.0 slot? I use an external keyboard which I plug in to that slot but sometimes it just randomly shuts off and blows up or something so the keyboard stops working (first time it happened scared me a bit because I thought they keyboard died out on me).
It started working after I rebooted again, but it just happened again so I thought I might ask about it here. So far it has happened 2 times in about 3 weeks after 6 months of usage. -
So, just so everyone knows, Nichol is moving out. Not a pretty break up either. I will be dealing with that all weekend. -

Just came across this whilst browsing. Would a battery like this fit in the N61 or be the ideal design for a 9 cell battery?

apparently there is a fix for the starcraft overheating issue.
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/arch...rd-confirms-starcraft-ii-overheating-bug.aspx
"Apparently, the game's menu screens aren't framerate-limited. This means that when there's nothing else going on, your graphics hardware renders the bejeezus out of those screens, causing nasty overheating problems. The fix is easy, requiring players to add the following lines to your "Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt" "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" file:"
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60 -
would you guys think its safe to play starcraft with these new modifications?
man i haven't even tested a single game on this machine.
and i hope it runs on 64bit system,
oh and i have had no more bsod since the first one. hope it stays that way. -
one more question, what is this:
PCI Simple Communications Controller
its in my device manager, unrecognized. is it important and any idea if i can get hold of the drivers.
EDIT: one last question, how do i identify my web cam hardware ID.
"Webcam
V5.8.54000.207 (your webcam may be different; update only if you have the same webcam as me. My Hardware ID in device manager is USB\VID_13D3&PID_5122&REV_1118&MI_00)"
i looked all around device manager. no info regarding this. it just says "usb2.0 UVC 2M web cam" -
For your webcam, go Device Manager > open Webcam > right click & 'Properties' > 'Details' tab > 'Property' and scroll down to 'Hardware' then you'll have it.
