ok, so I decided to try and hook up the laptop to my very old crt monitor and it works. So, what do u guys think the problem is? No sceen output whatsoever, but vga is just fine.
edit: tried restoring to factory defaults, but it just stays at a blue screen on vga. express gate works ok tho.

As long as you haven't deleted the memory dump files from the directory I mentioned in my post, you can view past BSODs also (no need to wait for another one).
-
just wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing with theirs.
I've had my laptop since late March, so it's been 4 months of happy ownership.
Mine's been running pretty much flawlessly except for a few graphics driver crashes (watching Youtube of all things) that were recovered in Windows.
Played the occasional game (Team Fortress 2) and watched movies once in a while.
I have yet to experience any heat related issues except for the one time I blocked the exhaust with a book while I was watching a movie...oops. got this red band across the screen. Restarted the video and it disappeared.
I've only updated the BIOS once (to 208?) and haven't tried it again after reading of all the bricking going on.
While I love this laptop, my attention is now turned to my desktop, which I've rebuilt into a beast.
i7-930, 6GB in triple, ATi 5870, 80gb Intel SSD...
Luckily I have this laptop as the diagnostics machine in case the desktop goes down. I've found this laptop to be very reliable.
Later,

For those that are playing startcraft II on your laptop look at this link:
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/arch...rd-confirms-starcraft-ii-overheating-bug.aspx
This might have been what caused my computer to die. -
Lately I've gotten BSODs from youtube, viddler, vimeo, etc. videos. I posted about it a couple pages back.
-
thanks for the heads up adamal

Hi all,
As a new owner of an N61JQ-JX002V I'm would like to know if the drive bay will accommodate 1TB drives that come in a 12mm form factor. I know a lot of laptops only have the room for the standard 9.5 mm size.
I'm talking about replacing the existing drive by the way, not adding a second one. -
yes, you need a obhd. one that says they will fit the larger 12.5mm drives, but i think most do. sadly im not interested in that kind of thing, so I don't have any recommendations. Newmodeus seems to have a lot of info on these, and quite a few to buy though.
-
Thanks but the OBHD is what I *don't* want - I want a plug in *replacement* for the existing 2.5" drive (which is 9.5mm). I want to keep my BluRay drive.
-
NEX_SASIN--will removing the bottom cover be safe as long as I'm sure to keep it a little elevated and away from foreign pieces of metal? What if I tried removing the bottom cover and putting it on a cooling stand so that it blows directly into the laptop?
-
After you take off the cover off why don't you hose it off, spray it with a fire extinguisher, pour some radiator fluid on it and stick it in your freezer.
OMG you thermal dorks are killing me! Take your cover off, how thermal dork OCD can you get?
-
Stevedogg, you are not using 64bit IE8 browser are you?
-
I wouldn't get so worried about one BSOD. As far as putting it on your lap without a cooler that would not do it. With the design of the vents up front I highly doubt you blocked them.
-
I'm using Firefox 3.6.8 (32-bit).
-
Regarding the BSOD problem above: I don't think it's hardware. I have found a way to deterministically reproduce the problem: see this thread. It is some combination of the new version of Adobe Flash (which uses hardware acceleration) and Catalyst drivers.
-
I agree. I believe it has to do with drivers. Windows recovered/restarted the drivers after the error and I went about my merry way.
-
Make sure your desk is clean before placing your laptop, well you're not gonna place a laptop on some uneven surface or piles of stuffs right?
And you should see the cooling pad will hit the airflow directly to the heatsinks when taken off the cover off the laptop. So yeah will be much cooler, my opinion is that USB cooling pads aren't powerful enough, but that's just me.
Just use your common sense for the safety and you'll be fine. -
It could the flashplayer which is causing these.
I experience this same issue of BSOD with youtube some time ago.
The problem disappeared after I removed flashplayer and installed a fresh copy again. -
thank you so much for the help. i will work on it.
-
the size of the memory.dmp is like 260mb
is it supposed to be that big , i found it in the windows folder -
yeah thats what i thought too, i have been in this forum from the very first page , this issue regarding the vents has come up , but i got this strange feeling it was to do with heat/movement, after the first bsod i have also been hearing a faint squeal from the laptop. not too noticeable , or maybe i just became really aware of the laptop after my first bsod. anyways thanks again , i am so glad that there are so many helpful people in this forum. thanks everyone. i would buy this laptop again if i must, keeping in mind about the support one gets here.
-
Oh, then I don't think the existing bay will accommodate the 1tb, xotic says its only 9.5mm, and it only looks 9.5 on the bottom thickness
-
Good info. We should get this on the front page.
-
Yep; I verified that the problem is Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration. It is a known issue with 3000-4000 series ATI cards (I think the 4000-5000 mobile are based on 3000-4000 desktop cards). The temporary fix is to disable hardware acceleration in Flash settings (right-click any video, Settings, uncheck Hardware Acceleration).
The following link will generate a BSOD if you have Flash 10.1 and hardware acceleration enabled. Use it (at your own risk) to test if your config. is vulnerable to the Youtube/video BSOD problem.

Mine are "mini" dump files located in C:\Windows\MiniDump. They are about 500-600 kB each.
-
Can someone tell me where I can check to see if I have the latest Lan/Wan/and bluetooth drivers?
-
For Bluetooth, go into Control Panel => "Uninstall a program" and look for the version number of WIDCOMM software (compare against the driver thread).
For LAN and WLAN, go into Device Manager: Windows + Pause => Device Manager => Network Adapters. Double click your LAN or WLAN card, click the Driver tab, and look at the number. -
Hey guys, quick question...
I already registered my laptop in Asus' site, and I mailed the copy of the e-mail they sent, plus my amazon Invoice. However, I did this a week ago, and I haven't gotten confirmation from them.
They do send confirmation e-mails when they receive the mail right, or should I just resend? -
I just received mine a month ago and registered back in March.
-
After I reinstalled the Flashplayer I did not get the problem again.
I will check if I have hardware acceleration off in Flashplayer.
Currently I am not working on the laptop, but maybe I will try this link to check if I get BSOD again.
-
Ok this is weird; I was able to reproduce the problem following the steps by the OP in this thread (playing the video on the page he links would flash the screen and give green video). Disabling hardware acceleration fixed the problem. BUT: today I turned it back on to see if the problem comes back, and it hasn't
. I can visit the test page and view that video with no issues, without re-installing Flash and with hardware acceleration turned on. I am using Catalyst 10.7 now. I'm confused haha.
Edit: maybe it's because I uninstalled the ASUS VGA driver (was using it to see if the BSODs would stop) and re-installed 10.7 after realizing the hardware acceleration setting fixed the problem. I completely uninstalled the ASUS driver, ran DriverCleaner.NET, manually deleted all ATI/AMD references from the registry, and installed 10.7. Could be something in that process fixed the problem? -
THANKS! All you have done with the driver page has made things so simple. I really appreciate it.
Edit: Sorry, I've got one more probably stupid question. For the WAN and LAN Drivers, when you extract the files, do you use the setup that is in the main extracted file, or do you go to the "64" subfolder and use that setup.exe? -
I actually don't run the setup file. I just use the update driver option in the driver tab in device manager to update. Just tell Windows to "let me specify the driver" (or something similar) and "have disk." Point it to the INF file in the 64-bit folder.
-
I have laptop for a month and a half. Had no problem untill today. I noticed little to the left from the center of the screen dark vertical shadow abot 1" wide. I don't know how long ago it showed up becouse I was using monitor.
Has Anybody had something like this? I guess it is rma case. -
Put it on top of the first page David. Do I get some free stuff for doing that?
-
I have flash version 10.0.32.18 and catalyst 10.7 and I cannot reproduce the bsod using any of these methods. I remember the last few days Adobe was trying to get me to update but I was busy at the time. Maybe if you could revert to 10.0.32.18 it might solve the problem.
-
If you look back through this lounge for the last few days you will find a few reports of screen problems like yours. I would rma it if it was my laptop.
-
At the moment, I am using Catalyst 10.7 with Flash 10.1 and hardware acceleration enabled, and there are no BSODs. I have no idea what happened, but I'm liking it!
-
Life is good stevedogg. Cross your fingers, hold your breath, And just say no to starcraft 2!
-
Hey, is anyone else experiencing problems with their USB 3.0 slot? I use an external keyboard which I plug in to that slot but sometimes it just randomly shuts off and blows up or something so the keyboard stops working (first time it happened scared me a bit because I thought they keyboard died out on me).
It started working after I rebooted again, but it just happened again so I thought I might ask about it here. So far it has happened 2 times in about 3 weeks after 6 months of usage. -
lol... I wish it were that easy.
So, just so everyone knows, Nichol is moving out. Not a pretty break up either. I will be dealing with that all weekend. -
Upgrade the drivers, I was having an issue like this myself. Check the drivers thread to see the latest drivers to get for it.
-
Just came across this whilst browsing. Would a battery like this fit in the N61 or be the ideal design for a 9 cell battery?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834993132 -
Sorry to hear that, hopefully it will go better than you expect.
-
I don't think that one would fit, but the design might work since it's not extending out the back.
-
No way that I can so no to such a great game. I've been force to play it on my wife's ASUS (G50VT-X5) for now. I made the change based on my post for her machine. It seemed to help with the heat on her computer. So far no glitches there. Mine is still in route to the repair facility (I did have to provide my own box). With any luck I'll have it back in a week or two. That should give me just enough time to get it ready for grad school.
-
apparently there is a fix for the starcraft overheating issue.
http://gameinformer.com/b/news/arch...rd-confirms-starcraft-ii-overheating-bug.aspx
"Apparently, the game's menu screens aren't framerate-limited. This means that when there's nothing else going on, your graphics hardware renders the bejeezus out of those screens, causing nasty overheating problems. The fix is easy, requiring players to add the following lines to your "Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt" "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" file:"
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60 -
would you guys think its safe to play starcraft with these new modifications?
man i haven't even tested a single game on this machine.
and i hope it runs on 64bit system,
oh and i have had no more bsod since the first one. hope it stays that way. -
one more question, what is this:
PCI Simple Communications Controller
its in my device manager, unrecognized. is it important and any idea if i can get hold of the drivers.
EDIT: one last question, how do i identify my web cam hardware ID.
"Webcam
V5.8.54000.207 (your webcam may be different; update only if you have the same webcam as me. My Hardware ID in device manager is USB\VID_13D3&PID_5122&REV_1118&MI_00)"
i looked all around device manager. no info regarding this. it just says "usb2.0 UVC 2M web cam" -
I did mentioned to you that "PCI Simple Communications Controller" is a RAID driver. Is Intel Active Management technology part of the Intel Manegement Engine (IME). You can go Asus download page and at "Others" category.
For your webcam, go Device Manager > open Webcam > right click & 'Properties' > 'Details' tab > 'Property' and scroll down to 'Hardware' then you'll have it.
