I played the game before and after the modifications on my wife's computer and there was a noticeable difference in the amount of heat while playing the game. I wish I knew about this before I started playing on my N61, maybe it wouldn't be on it's way for repair if I had.

I ran into the same issues with my external keyboard & mouse. Even after updating the drivers it happened. I usually could just unplug the cord and plug it back in though, didn't have to reboot to get it working.

Eventually I gave up and extended the cord around to the other side. No problems since then. I figure the USB 3 just isn't there 100% yet, which I'd expect from a 1st generation product.

ok i manage to get hold of my dump file. like i mentioned earlier, i got only one bsod, and it occurred when i place the laptop on my lap for the first time. now people mentioned that i would have to drop the laptop for it to bsod on me , and i can assure you that i did not.

i have attached the image i got from the "bluescreenview" i hope someone can infer from this.

edit:the crash was caused by ntoskrnl.exe, what is that ?

Ah the famous " IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL " issue. Quite popular. Yet... i don't remember how to fix it because i only came across it couples time with WinXP long ago.

Is something to do with the storage driver conflict, incompatible or possibly rare corruption loaded to RAM. If you google it there are tons of results and some may contain the answer you seek.

Certainly not hardware issue, software's matter.

storage driver conflict, hmm.. so do you think the Intel Rapid Storage Technology thing would fix it.

if its software well i can always fix that, man this is good news, i am so much happier now, :) :)

I can't tell if Intel Rapid Storage would fix. I've noted using Window's OEM storage driver gets the best performance out with single HDD and i've been sticking with that principle for over 4 years.

But go ahead try it and hope will be stable.

I have a request not sure if you guys know where i can possibly find help with.

Is regarding the audio without the Realtek driver i'm able to use W7 built-in Bass Boost. However reducing the power output by 30 to 60% depending how much Boost i put into the setting.

With Realtek driver install it gives full power, but in exchange lose the sound quality i desire.

In this case, anyone have convenient solution or mod? Or know the right place to discuss Realtek driver modding?

    Thanks

EDIT: At the mean time i'll try experiment by disabling the INF script that modifies W7 enhancement features.

I have a question that may seem a little silly, but I am very curious to know the answer. Is it possible to upgrade the GPU to the ATI HD 5870? Will it be supplied with sufficient power? Thanks in advance.

5730 is soldered to the mobo, so you can't upgrade.

Been playing StarCraft II and read the announcement on the first page. I just got done and CPUID says my processor cores maxed at 77C 77C 86C and 82C and my GPU maxed at 79C. Are these temps high or within range?

By the way, I went ahead and applied the suggested fix for StarCraft II anyway.

I don't know if you read the first page but Asus provided the wrong address to send papers to. Check the Accidental Damage Warranty thread (or the first page) for the correct address.

If you did send it to the correct address, it can take a while for them to get it. I believe it took about 2 weeks for my response email to arrive.

    What NEX said...nope.

people have been saying that the gpu can go beyond 100C. the cpu can reach 100C. so i think you should be fine.

i personally would be worried if it crosses 90C. but again thats just me.

To let you guys know, finally I have submitted my PhD dissertation and got some time to implemented the backlit keyboard mode on my N71JQ. :D

I have holidays next week. I will upload some details about my solution then. :)

The solution that I linked before from the UL30 Lounge and that was implemented by PaulW in the N71JQ lounge did not satisfy my engineering skills.
    Here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n71jq-owners-lounge-106.html#post6337002

I moded the circuit shown in the link http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/465841-ul30-backlit-keyboard-mod-9.html#post6131070 to include a FET between the negative keyboard supply terminal and the QT chip. The problem with the original proposed design was that the QT110 had to sink 200mA of current when backlights are on.
The chip is specified to sink only 2mA so it will get hot and can get damaged after prolonged use.

Furthermore, looking at the data sheet of QT110 chip you will notice that the metal touch sensor does not need to be touched directly. It can be implemented behind a plastic. For example as a small metal plate which can be glued with double sided tape inside the notebook casing. So when you touch the plastic area where the sensor is placed inside the notebook the lights will turn on or off. :D

On my N71JQ, on the right side there is a TV card antenna placeholder between the USB port and the Blue-ray drive which is covered by a round piece of plastic. I placed a small square aluminum plate inside the notebook behind this round plastic cover so that when I touch the round cover the lights are activated.

Sorry I don't have the pictures at the moment. In the lab when I implemented this solution, I did not have a camera available.
I will take the notebook appart in the weekend to post some picks.
I will also try to upload a schematics of my circuit. :)

The number that they gave me in the confirmation email was 888-678-3688. It doesn't say whether or not this line is strictly for warranty inquiries though.

Wow "did not satisfy your engineering skills", the best I can do is solder some audio cables to the audio jacks  , my very utmost compliments to you on your skills and on how you implemented the backlit keyboard  .

    Thanks Greg.
I will post the details of my Backlight mode very soon.

I just finished drawing the circuit with Visio. What is still missing is to take some photos of the actual setup. For that I would need to take the notebook apart. So most probably I will do that over the next weekend. :)

I am wondering if I should put those details here or in a separate thread.
This info is also interesting for the N71JQ owners.

I checked the frame rate on the log in screen for sc2 (by pressing ctrl alt F) and it was around 62.

(this is without doing the edit in the variables btw)

cpu id shows max temp as 75 after i played a couple games.

    Hey Everybody

Having a problem with my N61 and am looking for your input.

For some reason, it won't display a picture when I watch movie files - in some circumstances. If I reboot my laptop, and use only the laptop display, I can watch one movie (I'm using AVIs right now) and it works fine. Then, if I close my player and start it again - sound, but no picture.

If I plug in the HDMI cable no matter what I will not get picture on either the laptop display or my TV, even if I do a reboot. I've tried assigning the display through Catalyst Control Center and through Windows, and neither makes any difference. Single laptop display, single TV display, extended, cloned - all the same problem.

Tried Media Player, MPC, VLC, and KMplayer. All the same problem. Tried several different codec packs - now I'm back to just KMplayer, with just its internal codecs, and everything else is gone. Same problem.

It started without doing any configuration changes on the computer and has not been fixed by running Windows Update & updating my graphics card driver.

Additionally, in what may be a related problem, sometimes when plugging in the HDMI cable it makes the thing freak out. Windows will show displays 1 and 2 being split on my laptop screen and it sets the resolution to 640x480, which makes it a bit of a battle to get back to native res because the Windows all become bigger than the screen and Windows 7 doesn't let you move them off screen like you could do in WinXP.

Any ideas what the issue could be? Is there a process I could kill that may be interfering with my movie watching? Possibly something in the Catalyst Control Center?

    Setup details
N61Jq - system drive is a Mushkin Callisto SSD in a caddy. Stock hard drive has been reformatted and is used for data only.
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 activated & genuine
When I plug my HDMI in, it goes to a Pioneer VSX 9140 receiver then to a Panasonic 50" plasma TV (last year's model)

    Please help! lol

    -Cody

Turbogear, If you are going take your laptop apart just to take pictures for the benefit of others you get to post it however you like. A new thread would make sense so others can ask you questions. However you post it you will be seeing it on the first page of this lounge and I suspect the N71 lounge as well.

I just discovered something interesting yesterday after reinstalled new OS to my N61, i was reconfiguring the Windows Power plans. What i set for Power Saving mode actually got me higher benchmark score from WinRAR by 200 KB/s different with everything set to max.

Since we all know the power plan only display up to 2 power sets so i made Balance a full performance set for gaming. And Power Saving plan is for off games doing general stuffs.

The only difference i set with Balance and Power Savings is the ATI PowerPlay to Battery mode and have set PCI Express Link State to Maximum Power Savings. And while CPU settings are unchanged.

That got me extra 200kb/s score, wow, narrow down other system buses gets CPU more bandwidth? Awe.

No sorry i haven't been able to use other programs to benchmark and probably i don't wish to try other benchmark wares on my freshly installed and properly config'd OS.

Oh just another thing about mousepad someone was regarding turning it off temporary for his work. Well the BIOS is the place to go to disable it and turn it back on. I had alot hardware component turned off in BIOS including CPU Virtualization, Bluetooth, eSATA ports.

EDIT: And another thing about this i7 i felt a let down compare to my 3 years old Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz. I even wonder if that's DDR3's issue. On Task Manager each core uses around 12% as max. I was on IE selecting text and i find it sluggish wonder what happened so i checked on Task Manager which showing 12% when i'm selecting text with mouse.. How weird that old Dell doesn't even do that. After some intensive testing with it appears have gone away. No more peak when selecting texts

Ok, so I've run into an issue regarding the sound drivers (I think). When using Skype the other day, my mic was barely picking up what I was saying, so I decided to reinstall the Realtek Audio drivers. This fixed my mic problem, but now I get no sound out of the speakers (the headphone jack still works). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers using both Device Manager and the Realtek setup exe and still can't seem to fix this problem. Any ideas?

Have you double-checked that the current playback device is "Speakers" and not "Digital Output" (right-click Win 7 speaker icon, choose "Playback devices").

I just posted a new audio driver in the driver thread if you want to try the newest one.

Honestly, we appreciate the help. I have some side work that is taking all of my time. I get a little busy at times. The last time I spoke with Donald, he was behind and spending all of his time building systems.

We are glad that someone else got this done. If it could have been anyone, we are glad it was Turbo.

Well, I was just gifted the 13" Macbook Pro. It is a little "incentive" for doing some side work. I have to admit, the chicklet style keyboard is nicely backlit and roomy, the multi-touch touchpad is much more advanced then my 2008 Macbook pro and that much more then the N61 (and taking me a bit to get used to). It is nowhere as fast as the N61 but, I checked and it is the same cost. The battery life is said to be 10 hours but, I am getting more like 6-7.

Still, the N61JQ is waiting for the workload apps and the Macbook is the machine I am finding myself using most often. Yes, you can get a more powerful 15" Macbook Pro for $1799 but, that isn't a system that is in the N61's price range.

The hotness of the N61JQ deal is already waning. For the same price, you can get full HD now and a faster graphics card: G51JX

Yeah 6 months is about all you can expect with the hotness factor. But we new this when we bought this laptop. What drew me to the N61 was you got so much for such a low price. At $1,000 I knew I would not worry about the small incremental advancements that were sure to come. I can use this for a couple of years and then move up to the next major advancement.
Now paying $2,000 for something that is being passed up in 6 months and selling for $1500 is a whole different feeling. Every month new models will come out that might look better than this model but with their advancements they are not going to sell for less than $1,000. And I don't see something with our Specs selling for $500 anytime soon. So in conclusion life is still good as an N61 owner! :D

Honestly I'm surprised it's held it's value as long as it has. I'm stuck on my old desktop for the time being and boy do I miss that machine. This thing over 6 years old.
