    Thanks David.
I will upload the details over the weekend. :)
I planned it since start of May, but I was also too busy until end of July.

That is great news. Thank you for getting it done. I have had the keyboard in my N61 for months but never hooked up the back-light cable. With Nichol moving in and then out, side work, andLinux, work and my doctors appointments, things can tend to slide. Now, I have surgery coming up in the next few weeks.

I look forward to seeing your work. Thanks again!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the support. I am having back surgery. It isn't going to be fun but, I hope it takes care of the pain. Sure, the pain meds can be fun at times -- HA! -- but I would much rather buy them off the street like the rest of the druggies -- HA! -- then go through 300 (Yup, 10 a day) Oxycodone (10MG), 120 Soma, 60 Celebrex and 90 Lyrica in a month and still have pain.

Glad to see others are doing this, and hopefully we'll see some pictures soon? :D .

I mentioned a short bit ago that I got my backlit keyboard from ebay and completed a mod to get it working back then. However, it's just a basic mod. Find a power source, find a ground...the keys are lighted. It doesn't bother me at all that its on all the time, but I would love to see a much more expert (without a doubt !!!) job that can enable the lights on and off. :D

Sorry, I know these are bad, but I took them quick. I left the screen on to try and show it does light up nicely.

So, I've been having 2 problems lately, both dealing with sleep and hibernate:

    1. Often when coming back from Sleep, my screen won't turn on.

    2. When returning from Hibernate, sometimes my computer will stay stuck at the "Asus" boot logo, and not move forward.

Has anyone found solutions to either of these problems?

    @magnumforce2006,
    2. I found that this problem happens occasionally, when I have plugged in any USB devices(except for the mouse, like an external hd) and that on removing them, while switching on the laptop helps solve this issue..

    1. Sorry for asking, but for waking up from sleep you press the Power button right? (In my PC, it would wake up, when pressing any key, but not so in my lap). Also, have you tried enabling the screen (FN+F7/F8..don't have access to my laptop so I can't check..it has a 'x' mark inside a rectangle, on top of the F7/F8 key, I think)

I'm sorry, but my mind is just thinking about one thing here.

How much battery life do you lose with the backlit keyboard as opposed to the non backlit keyboard?

The backlight keyboard adds 7 extra LEDs to the system.

I have measured the power draw of the keyboard backlight in the Lab. It consumes around 200mA at 5V.
This means the system will draw 1 watt of extra power when backlights are ON.

Possible to rewire the side lights power to the keyboard one? I mean the side lights isn't so helpful afterall.

The side LEDs are not fed from the same point. The left one take power from the hotkey board and the right ones take power from the power button board.

Hey guys, just got a new Asus N61j. It's great... But I have a big issue with it, and I'm really confused. Wondering if you guys would know anything about this or help me out.

My specs are: Intel i5-430M, Geforce GT 325M 1GB, 4 GB ram

I'm a Flash developer and so I install Flash CS5 and get the newest flash player. But there is a very strange problem... Flash movies and flash games play slow! Even in the standalone flash player. The framerate, by my estimate, looks to be about 20 fps, when it's supposed to be running at 40. Flash games are very jittery and I can easily make out one frame from the next, unless they have very very simple graphics. The stranger thing is that when I count the actual framerate by displaying the fps within the actual file, it reports 40 fps. However, by my eye, it clearly looks to be around 20fps. What could be wrong? Is this a bug in Flash player? My Nvidia driver? Maybe even the screen?

I don't think this is a Flash problem because on any other computer, there is no such error, even when playing the same swf files, etc.

What's even more troublesome is that this bug isn't very documentable or even describable. There's no error message, no easy way to reproduce it, so it's really hard to search for a solution. Has anyone here ever experienced this graphical error with Flash player?

I appreciate any help you guys can offer. This is a very strange and unexpected performance issue, and it is very important to me as a Flash developer...

So I have all the details ready concerning the backlight keyboard.
I took the notebook apart and have taken many photos.
I still need some time to write proper details so that others can implement the method if they want.

It is now 2:30 at night here, so I will go to bed now.
I will post the details tomorrow in a new thread.

For the time being you can have a look at the video that shows the backlight hidden touch sensor working as planned. :D

The Adobe Flash program is 64bits? I really hard to tell because it runs fine on my N61 with 32bits OS. Could this be 64bits OS issue again? Idk.

For now your only fix is to update graphic driver and install latest flash player and see. If still not working out so well then is the 64bits OS issue, since we all know flash isn't so 64bits friendly at the moment.

That is F-ing cool turbogear! So can a Bus driver like me have any chance of duplicating this keyboard mod from your instructions? If not do you think I can take those instructions to a repair shop and pay them to do it?

Hi, from your laptop specs I can tell you have the N61JV-X2 with switchable graphics, maybe it's running on the integrated graphics when you use flash?

Integrated can't be the problem. Flash doesn't have GPU acceleration, and never did (although it's beginning to support it, but that's another issue. GPU acceleration is turned off for my swf files). Flash renders using CPU.

1 watt is almost nothing; this laptop draws about 1 W while in sleep. At idle, mine draws about 27 W (custom profile, plugged in). The 6-cell battery in our laptops has a design capacity of 47.3 W-h. Every hour of use, the keyboard backlight would consume 1 W-h energy, or 2.1% of the battery.

You can have a look at the schematic of the circuit in the link I posted above and then see if you can do it yourself or not.
If you have some repair shop near you who can do it for a small price then yes maybe you can show them the instructions so that they can implement it for you.
I don't know how is it in USA, but in Germany such shops can sometimes charge a lot of money. That's why many people in Germany have to do many things by themselves.

Well it would be nice if somebody here implements this solution on the N61JQ.
We have to find a similar power supply connection for powering the circuit.
I know it now for N71JQ, but don't know it for N61JQ.
I looked at some photos for N61JQ and it seems that on the right side near the power button there is a USB port.
Maybe this port can be used to power the sensor circuit.
It also seems like that there is a round TV antenna connector place holder near to that USB port.
If that is the case, maybe the sensor can be implemented behind it.
The sensor can also work if it placed behind the plastic at some other point in the notebook, but putting it behind these round antenna connector place holders makes it easy to find the exact place to touch in order to activate the light. Beside it looks like a professional round touch button.

Thanks Tony. It looks like the recovery isn't too bad and the surgery is minimal. They are going to shave off the protruding part of one of my bulging disks since it is sitting on the nerve clusters. The good part is that it is only an incision of a few inches and they hope that it should reverse some of the nerve damage when the pressure is released from the nerves. They also said that I should be able to get back to my Free Weights once I am done with recovery (although, they suggest not to use Free Weights).

Glad to hear things are finally looking up for you and your N61. With all the troubles you've had, let's hope that the rest of your time with it is trouble free.

There is some bad news. I am not going to do the keyboard mod on my N61 right now. With all the trouble we founders have been having, I think it is best not to void my warranty. I am going to wait until it expires before I hack up my N61. Since I need it for so many projects, I just can't risk it. Thank goodness Turbo did it for us already!

Also, no mail-order Oxy's for you! Bad Tony! Bad! *smacking nose with newspaper* HA!

Some good news, I would like to introduce everyone to the newest member of the family. We rescued a 9 month old Papillion/Pomeranian puppy from the Central Florida SPCA named Sparky. He is the cutest thing on 4 feet and is the dog my daughter has always dreamed of. He is lost without her! ;-)

Too bad that it is the story for so many of us in the owners lounge. The good news is that now the N61 is starting to become dated, once the dust settles, we can start to focus on the next laptop that we are all getting. You know, the non-free ones. HA!

Actually, I have been so busy that even my PS3 hasn't been turned on for months and there are times I forget I have one! I even got to a certain stage in Crysis, on the N61, a few months ago and haven't played that either.

You know, come to think of it, Tony needs to fire up his N61 and get a game going. If not for himself, for the rest of us!!! We can relax vicariously through him!

Come on Tony. Get to wor... umm... play!

I'm finally getting off the workaholic chain gang. I went 8 straight years of 65 hr+ work weeks with few days off other than sick or vacation. Now I'm working 50 hrs with 2 days off and I'm starting to feel alive again.
So I agree with David, fire up that N61 Tony. Lets wear these things out so we can all move on to the next toy! :D

I also work around 48 hours per week for past 5 years. The contract is for 39 hours but I was working for 5 years on PhD research and there sometimes the hours don't count but the results.

Since April I also did not get much time to do many extra things. For almost 4 months I did not play any video games since I had a tight schedual to finish my dissertation writing. I was working around 65 hours per week. I did not had too much time to spend with my wife and son.
Finally after I submitted my work I can again come to normal life.
    I have 15 days vacation now. :p

Now in the evenings I get some time to play StarCraft II  on my desktop but not on laptop.
The laptop is used only for work.

Hey guys...quick question. I am redoing my Computer Room. I recently purchased a tyke monitor mount. I am looking for (2) 22in monitors to mount. Do ya'll prefer 1680x1050 or 1920x1080. I enjoy gaming. I was trying to find something from Dell maybe ???? It seems hard sometimes on the monitor description if they are VESA 100 x 100 compatible.

    thanks.

I am pulling a long hitch...working like 108 hours a week. When I am complete out here I will end up with like 45 days offshore and 3 days off. Have about two weeks left and I will be done :p

I have a 20" monitor at home that does 1680x1050 and a 23" monitor at work that does 1920x1200. I prefer the 23".
