I just got a LG 22" LED monitor from Best Buy. It was on sale for $179 (I got the display), is 1080P and had a great picture compared to the LCD monitors on the shelf. The web site had a Viewsonic LED monitor for $189 but it is mail order only. Since the LG is no longer being sold there, I got the display for 20% off. You may want to try.

To all the hard working N61 brothers here. Work can seem important or necessary in the moment. But if you are not carefull you can wake up 10 years later and wonder where all the time all went. It just happened to me and I'm trying not to let it happen again.

Asus 25.5" 1920x1200 LCD with a 17" Samsung oldie but goodie.
I have the HDMI input connected to my desktop and the DVI with HDMI converter on the side for when I want to hook up the laptop.
So much space I don't know what to do with it. Makes for some immerse FPS games. -
Last night I purchased (2) 21.5inch Dell E2210H Widescreen Flat Panel Monitors. I got a great deal on them. Picked up both for a little over $300. They normally go for 200 a piece. Had really good reviews on em. Can't wait to get inshore and hook them up!

This is the one I got for $150.
LG - 22" Widescreen Flat-Panel LED Monitor - Glossy Black - E2250V
I think the biggest difference is the contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 dynamic but that is because it is LED. -
hi guys i just bought the N61JQ-jx014V(640GB,blu-ray)
i wanna ask..would you recommend me to update my bios to 210(does it gonna give a faster and better system?) and update my catalyst to 10.7 without having any VSOD and etc.?..tnx!! -
It depends which bios you have now. And You should make sure that model number matches up to the bios you are updating to. If you are comfortable with the bios updating procedure then you might as well. If you are someone like me who is new to bios flashing then you should follow the recomendationof updating your bios only if you are having problems. As far as the 10.7 goes we have had no reports of problems with it.
Check out Stevedogg's driver update thread for more information on updates to the N61JQ.
-
Yeah they are getting crazy with contrast ratio numbers...I think the 1000:1 listed on the dell is static...I do not know what the dynamic is. Its so confusing on how the list it.
-
Thanks for that advice bro.
I will try not to focus on work too much. But this machine is so good at it it's hard not to.
-
I think the dynamic contrast rating is mostly a gimmick. This is the monitor I'm using. There was a deal on it for $239 a while back.
-
I think the difference is because of the LCD vs. LED screens. Things are even crazier with cell phones. Once AMOLED comes down in price for monitors, it will get even more confusing.
All I know is that the LCD monitors on display didn't compare to the LED monitors they had. If I didn't have the LED there to compare, I wouldn't have known the difference. The LED's picture was crisper and the colors were amazing. I did see quite a few LCD's that were very nice but the picture just couldn't compare. Again, if there wasn't an LED to compare to, I wouldn't have cared.
On a sad note, there was a small scratch on the demo units screen so I did have to return it. I ended up ordering a Viewsonic LED monitor instead. It has a 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 170° horizontal/160° vertical viewing angles (less then the LG) and built in speakers. It is also only $189.
ViewSonic - 22" Widescreen Flat-Panel LED Monitor with Built-In Speakers - VX2250wm-LED
It doesn't come with any cables though and most of the LCD's either came with the DVI or DVI and VGA cables. With shipping it was about $60 more then the demo unit. I keep wondering how much trouble that scratch really was.

LED and non-LED (CFL) monitors are both LCDs. LED/CFL just refers to the white backlighting; the main advantage of LED is reduced power consumption. Here's some info comparing the two: LED TV vs LCD TV : LCD TV Buying Guide covers LED vs LCD.
In the future, we will probably start to see true LED monitors, where the pixels themselves are each LEDs (probably OLEDs as used in some cell phones). Those monitors will have amazing blacks (since the pixels can truly turn off) but will likely consume much more power until the technology is improved. -
I think it is used to measure how black the monitor can really get. The higher the ratio, the "truer" the black is.
I just found this on Wikipedia: Contrast ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes, the worlds best info source... HA! *puke*
Ahh, here is another about LED TV's: LED-backlit LCD television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Here is a LED vs. LCD article: LED TV vs LCD TV : LCD TV Buying Guide covers LED vs LCD
Basically, it looks like LED may be worth the money. The comparable LCD TV was only $30-$40 cheaper. -
HA! We linked to the same article! GMTA
There are some other advantages in picture quality but, they are minimal. Like I said, if I didn't have them to compare against, I wouldn't have cared (or known). It was only because they were side-by-side, that I noticed. -
I was definitely thinking about it when I bought mine, but I decided to go ahead with the CFL since the power was comparable to LEDs (33 W typical on the spec sheet).
I had used an IPS LCD before with my iMac at work, and I really wanted a monitor with its superior viewing angles and colors at home. The U2311H hasn't disappointed. It looks awesome!
Edit: Article comparing IPS and TN for the curious -
If its done on the N61 then its not work!

Goodday people,
I need to know at what settings the n61jq will be able to handle Starcraft 2. I know that the laptop more than exceeds the recommended system requirements, but I want to hear (or read in this matter!) first hand how well it can handle the game.
I´m seriously contemplating on getting this machine, but I need to know whether it will run my precioussssssss in high settings. -
I was able to run it at high. I've heard that running at Ultra might be too much on larger maps. Remember to add the frame rate limit fix for the menus or it might fry like mine did.
-
You can run it high no problems. Ultra will lead to lag in most games you play though
-
I run it at 1080p on High settings for most of the pretty stuff and cut back on things like shadows and reflections and physics. Locked at 30fps all around and turned off 3D Portraits (they're distracting too). When I'm only on my laptop i bump up some other stuff and rock it at 720p res for steady 30fps.
Works very well
-
Thanks a lot Nihonjon!
Actually, I bought the system yesterday and played some SC2. It works pretty well on high, but I put some things down to medium like yourself because I experienced some frame drops during the campaign.
I was also wondering, according to my WEI, everything except my processor is at 6,9. I've read that other people had much higher scores. Is there something I need to do to enhance it all? Some sort of driver or bios upgrade?
ps.
I already installed the new catalyst 10.7 driver for my gpu. -
Strange,do you mean 5.9? My 4 GB RAM is rated 5.9 (One way to increase the RAM score would be to install a 32-bit Windows;which would make your score skyrocket to above 7 I blv;Another way would be to upgrade to 8 GB RAM in 64-bit Windows itself) and my (320 GB HDD) is rated 5.8. (Here, an SSD would make a huge difference).
Which makes my WEI score 5.8. I suppose 5.9 is what others get.
But, there is no need to take an effort to increase your WEI, it is not that good indicator of performance. (For eg.A good low latency 1600 MHz 4 GB DDR 3 RAM would have a lower rating than a 8 GB 1066 MHZ RAM,even though the former would perform better in some memory-based Benchmarks).. -
Hello, upgraded the drivers but same problem just occurred today. Browsing Mozilla Firefox with latest USB 3.0 driver from driver thread when it just stopped on me.
-
I updated the scores and now some of them went up to 6.9. Only the ram and hdd are still at 5.9.

Hey guys... first post here. I searched everywhere but haven't found an answer yet. I just recently purchased a Asus N61JQ and I have a question about hooking it up to an external monitor. My external monitor ( Viewsonic VX2260wm) supports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p). When I hook it up via VGA, it works as it should. But when I hook it up via HDMI (my preferred method, since my VGA port on my monitor is normally occupied by my Xbox), the resolution isn't right.
It still detects that it's a 1920 x 1080 monitor... and it reports that that is what it is displaying it as, but it definitely is not. It doesn't fill up the entire monitor and it looks bad.
On the ATI CC settings, it is set as HDTV - 1080p... In Window's Screen Resolution it is set as 1920 x 1080.
Also, in the ATI CC, above the HDTV options there are the basic settings... but they only go up to 1680 x 1050.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys
Edit: I've tried different HDMI cables... the issue continues to persist. Also, it is set on Extended display. Although I have tried every other option (only display on the external, duplicate.. etc) -
I'm sure this isn't your problem, but did you actually try to fill the screen with a window (e.g. maximize a window on the external monitor)? I ask because Win 7 does not scale wallpaper properly on external displays; if you choose to scale the wallpaper (fits to your laptop screen), the external will show black bars around the wallpaper. The entire screen is usable, but at first glance, it looks like something is wrong.
-
Thanks for the reply, but no, that's not my issue. The task bar stops about a half an inch on both sides from where the edge of the monitor is.
-
I just installed the last 9.1.0.100 wireless drivers - It's amaaaazing, this drivers is the faster drivers I never saw at this time.
its incredible. stable and fast as bullet gun !
Its really amazing, but go ahead, make your day and try it !
-
I can't do much to help you today but, I should be getting my Viewsonic VX2250wm-LED on Monday. They are pretty close in model number so, I am thinking that the menu options should be about the same. Once it comes in, I will connect it to my N61JQ and see if I get the same results. If so, we can work together to find the solution. It is probably just an adjustment somewhere.

hi guys!.. which do u think is better.. the Catalyst provided by ATI -10.7 or the one which is provided by Asus(Version V8.692.1.0)?. coz i want a better performance and especially to avoid BSOD's etc. and other problems.
-
I believe I solved my issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers and the issue went away... I'm still curious to see if you run into any problems, so keep me posted.

reg.: SQUEALING SOUNDS: I noticed that high pitched noise gets less noisy once you turn the screen brightness to maximum. My old Vaio had that too. Everytime I would decrease brightness levels that sound would be audible.
-
You don't need to post the same question multiple times in multiple threads.
In any case the driver you referred to from ASUS website (V8.692.1.0) is much older than 10.7. Look at the date. It is from Febraury where as the 10.7 is the newest.
ASUS usually does not update download page of the notebooks. So most of the drivers there except for bios file are old. There are newer versions available to many of them as posted by stevedogg in the following thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html.
ATI drivers are always evolving and fixing bugs. This is especially useful if you game on the machine becuase there are improvements introduced with new drivers and bugs fixed for certain games.
You mentioned BSODs.
Are you getting BSODs with your notebook?
If so maybe try to use Whocrashed application to find out what is causing them. Here is a link: the http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed
I think you bought your notebook recently. If from very start your machine is getting BSODs it could very well be hardware related. -
So, I know probably TOO much hasn't changed since I last asked the thread, but are there any good deals out there for upgrading the ram to 8gb?
-
Nothing like it was a year 1/2 ago. According to most of the stuff I've been reading don't expect any major changes in RAM prices for the next 6 months.
-
Hey guys, just a simple question, how do i install the newest wireless driver Atheros V9.1.0.100? I downloaded it but when i opened it, all i get is these folders: ndis5x, ndis6x and ndis5x64. So what do i do after this step?
Help appreciated. -
Aight. Well, any specific recommendations for models as of now?
-
I usually go with Corsair or Crucial. Just don't go with the cheap stuff. Someone in one of the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades forum might have better advice.
-
I'm not sure if this is the right way, but this is what I did...
I went to device manager, found my Wireless adapter, update drivers manually, and then selected the one file in the ndis5x64 -
I will let you know. I checked the tracking link and it is still on track to be here Monday. I just finished putting the desk, chair and speakers together (the speakers are plugged into the Sony Dash and streaming my background music).
The Macbook Pro is going to use the desk mostly but, it looks like I can have both laptops plugged into the monitor and just switch between inputs. This is going to be a fun setup. ;-) -
It looks like they finally repaired my laptop, I just got my FedEx tracking number. With any luck I'll have it by Wednesday. I'm going to have to stress test the thing again.
-
You know Turbo, Steve should probably rename that thread: *ASUS N61JQ & N71JQ Driver Thread* There is very little differences and you could always help him with the few there are.
Just an idea. -
Ok thanks,it worked!
-
Yes the difference between the two machines is minimal.
All the other drivers except for the bios file are the same.
That's why whenever somebody at N71JQ lounge asks for a new driver, I always refer them to Steve's driver thread.
-
Actually, I didn't solve my issue. The only way the external monitor displays properly is if there are no graphics drivers installed on my computer. As soon as I install the latest 5730 graphics drivers, it makes my external monitor display all crappy. So I guess for now, I'm just not going to have my graphics drivers installed.
EDIT #1: Haha, well I take that back, kind of. The external display does work properly with drivers from Asus' website, just not the latest ATI drivers (8.753). I'm using version 8.692.1.0 and they work fine. Still, I'd like to know why the latest drivers don't work =(
EDIT #2: Finally, found a true fix! For some reason with the new drivers, it turned on the overscan setting in CCC. All I had to do was turn it to 0%... I figured it would be something small and stupid like that. -
Thanks for posting this bit, just in-case someone else runs into this issue.
-
Thanks, Where is the overscan setting in CCC?
