Yes I switched, but mostly just to see if any of the options in CCC were different; they are not (ASUS has not added any panels or features). It is still possible that there are tweaks in the drivers specific to our system, but they are not obvious things like new options.

I don't know if 10.8 will contain the audio driver, but if it doesn't, you can always install it manually from the desktop package, as per my post in the driver thread.

Just to specify that if you have win7ows 32Bit version the ATI 10.7 include HDMI audio...

Ah ok; thanks for mentioning that. It was probably an accident on their part to omit it from the x64 package.

I've had that happen a couple of times; it definitely doesn't happen every time. The brightness slider appears and moves on the screen, but the actual brightness does not change. Same with the power settings.

If you use the MOMENTUS XT hybrid drive, like SSD you must disable superfetch for the boot and may be for applications too Support and Q&A for Solid-State Drives - Engineering Windows 7 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs because the SSD disk memory of the momentus XT is faster than superfetch...

I have faster boot with my Hitachi 7200 drive than the Momentus XT but if I disable the superfetch the boot is a l i t t l e faster with the Momentus...

There is a tool to desactivate Superfetch on win7ows, the name is TweakPrefetch and you can use it safely - I did it with no trouble. SoftHardware: TweakPrefetch

When I have time I will try the same for the applications and I will give you the results, right now I just tested the boot. if you do it, tell us your feedback.

Nope, no cooler. Before my repairs I had IC 7, but I'm going to guess they just put stock cooler on when they repaired my motherboard.

What is your room temp. mine was at 76F when I recorded those temps.

Anyone know how to make the f10, f11, f12 function keys always be set to handle the volume? Just a small gripe, but I don't like the volume keys at the way top and I don't like using two hands to adjust the volume.

Anyone have trouble with connecting the N61 to a wireless router? Most of the time when I shut down/hibernate and turn the laptop back on I wouldn't be able to connect until whenever the laptop lets me again, which could range from a minute to 20-30 minutes. I tried to find updated network drivers but couldn't get any to work, even the azurewave network drivers on Asus's website don't install.

Does it recognize the wireless card? If not, it may be like the issue I was having where, even though the wireless hard switch was on, windows did not detect my wireless card. I'm not sure where the post is in the forum, but if you just click on the wireless connection and let windows do it's windows repair thing, it will fix this problem (it thinks it's turned off).

I'm with you there. I hated having to use two hands to adjust something as simple as volume. Then I realized that I could just use the volume buttons above the keyboard (top left) for the same purpose. It took a little training on my part, but it's a good solution now.

I've noticed that sometimes Windows doesn't check for networks after turning the wireless off and on again. Next time it won't connect, try hovering your mouse over the signal strength icon in the taskbar or clicking it once. That usually seems to get it to attempt a connection.

It definitely recognizes the card. I can click to view available connections and my network is definitely on there except when I try to connect, it tells me "Windows was unable to connect to...". So I try clicking the troubleshoot button so Windows will try to repair it, then it gives me "Problems with wireless adapter or access point detected".

So after all that I try toggling the WLAN switch on/off and sometimes that would work, but not all the time. I'll try downloading new drivers from stevedoggs thread and give that a go.

    I just have 2 questions:

    1. How long will it take to burn the recovery disks when I first get it?

    2. What documents/information/other do I need for my Asus warranty to stay in effect? I also bought this with Visa who gives me an extra year of warranty on stop of the 2-years (A1).

    Thanks :)

Is there any difference in performance that you guys noted between Power4Gear High Performance and just High Performance in the Windows 7 power options profiles?

I heard even for performance, balanced is the way to go, how many of you have noted this in actual real life situations?

Open up CCC, and go to Video => All Settings => Video Playback => Apply current video quality settings to Internet video.

I think it applies your enhancements to youtube videos, etc.

To those who also have wireless problems, so far the wireless connection has been quite stable after I updated the Atheros driver.

On another note, if I want to update the video driver do I download the Catalyst Software Suite or the Catalyst Control Center?

You want the Suite (driver + CCC). The CCC download is just CCC by itself (the driver control panel).

For the people who very often interested about the thermals of their notebook, you can visit the N71JQ lounge. I have posted results from my testing on the new N71JQ bios v208.

Here's the link to the post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n71jq-owners-lounge-137.html#post6642838

Finally ASUS has solved the problem with fan cycling up and down between 100rpm and 3300rpm every few seconds.
Not only they fixed that, but they improved the fan speed switching profile.
Under 100% stress on both CPU and GPU for 25 minutes my notebook stayed around a temperature of 85°C for both CPU and GPU.

The same tests with older bios led to temperatures in the range of 92°C for both CPU and GPU.

Of course there is a price to be paid with respect to the fan noise. When both CPU and GPU are at 100% load, the fan is staying at a speed of 5700rpm, but when only one is stresed then the fan is going dynamically up and down in speed.

What are you using to view fan speed? Mine does not seem to be reported (tried HWMonitor, PCWizard, Realtemp). I wonder if the fan issue affects the N61JQ as well?

    I am using Everest.

I also wonder if the N61JQ has this problem as bioses of both machines should originally be stemming from the same source, but nobody seems to have reported it so far.

Does the fan is your notebook also cycle up and down in speed every few seconds?

In N71JQ it was really annoying to hear the fan switching every few seconds between 100rpm and 3300rpm. Now it is running smoothly. The fix was to raise the lowest speed from 100rpm to 2200rpm.

I never noticed any fan cycling, and under stress tests, the fan is loud and constant. It would be nice to see in numbers though.

The fan on mine is usually constant to the sound. I haven't measured it however, so if it is subtle I haven't noticed.

I also thought so otherwise there would have been some users who would have notice it.

What I am impressed about with the new bios for N71JQ is that the notebook runs cooler than before when under load. :D

No, only ASUS has the tool to make the hidden recovery partition.

Did you make the recovery disks before you deleted the recovery partition?

    Where are you?

    Oh crap ... :-(

Yes I did make the 4 rec. discs. Right now I have done the following:
    - booted using Ubuntu Live CD
    - deleted all partitions
    - created one ntfs part. over the whole harddisc
    - started the rec. procedure
    - the procedure has now finished copying the 4 dvds to the harddrive and there is no dvd left in the dvd-drive
    - the windows installation procedure has begun.

The recovery procedure is now finished and I am using the Windows on my N61 to write this. Apparently the 4 rescue dvds have created a new rec. partition upon selecting and using the "recover the whole harddrive" option.

Hi guys, I searched but couldn't find the answer here!

When I try to save some files from Google Chrome, it says at first I don't have permission at first, then I click OK. But it gives me another chance to save the file and after that it asks me do I want to Overwrite the file. If I say yes, it then works!

Also when I try to install VLC player using the .exe, it makes me enter an Administrator password or use my own account. Neither one works as I never set an Administrator password!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I asked this question to asus support guy and this is what he said (You must make the 4 dvd backup before... and I never tried):

    Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
Sorry for the delay and any inconvenience.
The recovery discs created by AI Recovery could restore the hidden partition if this partition was lost.
If you continue to experience issues in the future, please do not
    hesitate to contact us.
    Best Regards,
