Both if we can. The M17x is already scoring 18K+ in 3dmark06.

I'm OC'ing the GPU. I'm OC'ing only if cooling system in g73jh is good.
If it turns out cooling system is very good, then I'm overclocking it to the 5770 clocks. -
Hi folks. I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this ... but I am literally on the verge of pre-ordering and just had 1 question.
As far as I can tell this laptop is freaking amazing in every aspect ... but the video card is a bit of an unknown factor.
Benchmark-wise it seems to be amazing, beating out any single video card. However, I have read on other forums that people have had problems with the 5870 and DX10 games.
Thanks in advance, hope this is appropriate, and hopefully will be joining the ranks of owners soon! -
Are they referring to desktop cards? I don't know of any other system currently with a mobile 5870.
-
Mobility 5870 is based off of desktop 5770, not 5870.
@Mandrake: I'm pretty sure he's referring to desktop gpu. -
Yes, the desktop as there is no mobility 5870s out to compare.
Ok, good to know that it's based off the 5770, I'll look into that. Thank you. -
Well I just pre-ordered today! I don't know if that helps me make the cut for the early shipments or not in February but here's to hoping!
Yar~

Also pre-ordered ... maybe I'll get lucky and it will arrive for my birthday in a few weeks!
-
Welcome to the team boys!!! Hopefully you guys dont end up bench warmers as these have been selling like hot cakes!!!
-
yeah! Every day reading the posts there's always people saying "Just pre-ordered this beast at......."!!
xD -
ive pre-ordered mine from affordable laptops here in perth western australia
hopefully this card is all its cracked up to be, but for the price and that ammount of HDD space + ram and an i7, i highly doubt i will be dissapointed
when my m17x was running well with its 260m's in sli i was impressed, but the quadcore 2ghz was holding them back XD -
Hey guys I'm about to preorder one of these babies
I just can't decide whether I should upgrade to an i7 820 CPU or go with 1333Mhz RAM and 80gig SSD. What do you think will have the most impact on performance?
-
Dude. You are a bada$$
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The 80GB SSD will have the greatest impact on performance. The CPU would be second and the memory upgrade would be 3rd. -
here is my play list:
Grand Theft Auto IV
Street Fighter IV
Supreme Commander
Assanssin's Creed 1 & 2
Batman Arkham Asylum
Stalker
Far Cry 2
Dirt 2
BioShock
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Crysis
Guild Wars
Dragon Age Origins
StarCraft II - When Available
Did I miss anything?
Also any tips for a G73 Owners who has never OC a computer before. -
Agree on the SSD being the best value upgrade
I have ssd drives in two of my notebooks and you can feel the improvement in boot times and overall crispness with them
Alex -
I would say just the SSD, then if you have anymore money the CPU... From 1033 to 1333 ram there's no difference or almost, you won't even see the difference..
So, I agree with them. For the RAM is just a waste of money. -
MayB u wil need to add the new Splinter Cell in ur list later this year...
-
how about Bioshock 2? -
Starcraft II won't be out until 2012, so don't hold your breath
-
crysis 2 also coming out later this year...
-
no... I think it'll be out by end of 2010
-
That is correct. Starcraft 2 : Wings of Liberty is scheduled to be released in Q2 of this year
-
Can anyone elaborate on that?
I had planned to use the blu-ray drive and then connect the laptop to my HDTV via HDMI to watch movies in Hi-Def. -
I have power dvd installed on my laptop that has a bluray drive
The ultra version is needed for bluray playback
Alex -
Why must they make these programs so expensive? It's like they are trying to promote 'piracy'. Seriously, I can go and buy a standalone Blu-Ray player for the same price as the software, not to mention the $30 upgrades from one version to the next. Haven't these people ever taken an econ class? Don't they know that they could sell many more units if they lower their prices even a little? /rant
Okay, well now that that's off my chest; I'm disappointed in Apple for not refreshing the Macbook Pro line, but I guess it's a good thing since it'll probably save me money. Sorry if this post seems a little incoherent, I need sleep. -
So, they give you the blu-ray player and you have to buy the software that costs more than a blu-ray player??? ! I won't buy the programm that's for sure..asus could preinstall something..!

Let's just hope the ending of this story is better than the debacle you had to endure with the W90. -
Yea I have to agree with you on that one. Hopefully we will know more once the resellers get their hands on the computer. I think though that every component should be usable when you receive a brand new computer.
On the other hand looking through the Asus G73JH support site I don't see anything relating to Blu-Ray, but there is still plenty of time or it could even be bundled with the VGA driver. Anything that comes standard should have full functionality right? Otherwise perhaps I should just remove the Blu-Ray option and just invest that money into a standalone player? -
Hey all,
If opting for an SSD drive as primary, and 500GB standard as secondary, is it possible to have a RAID setup? If so, is RAID-0 recommended? I won't be storing important data on either of these hard drives, so if I lose all data on both, I won't care so much.
Cheers~ -
although you probably won't be able to play it for two years, so don't get excited
-
lol if the optimisation by lazy programmers will be so poor as oroginal crysis so heck yes
-
You can't do this. Even if you could, there would be no benefit of Raiding an Ssd with a mechanical.
-
not really excited this game...am more excited about Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin Creed 2...
N cant wait to get back to my live fifa
-
Edit: Changed my post around
Seems like the new 10.1 beta drivers support the mobile 5800 series. Maybe they'll work for the G73
-
I'm in the club; pre-ordered my G73 from GenTech yesterday. Fingers crossed I still get in on the first shipment, but that's sort of a dream, isn't it?
-
Congrats, although you're probably right about not getting one first shipment. Those wanting the G73 early will likely have better luck now waiting until they show up at BB, Newegg etc. If it turns out like the w90vp situation, a lot of orders will be still waiting to be fulfilled while larger e-sellers get stock.
At least by ordering from GenTech you have the consolation of having someone to yell at directly when Asus discontinues support. Poor guys... they've taken a beating over the months because of Asus' tomfoolery
-
I usually buy from Amazon, but on this machine I wanted the ICD7 TIM without voiding the warranty. Plus GenTech was instrumental in getting the BIOS that fixed (finally) the BSOD issue with the G51J out to owners before ASUS was completely ready to release it. That's big, in my book: everybody loves you when you're in the market, very few after the check has cleared, sadly.
-
Yeah the heatsink makes a bigger difference. The better the heatsink the less thermal compound needed.
-
both of those threads for 1, are almost a decade old and thermal compounds have definitely improved. secondly, they are all comparing aftermarket compounds, which isn't really a fair comparison in a laptop because the thermal compound they use stock, is generally total crap. I saw a 10C drop in temperatures just from using a different thermal compound than stock on my G51VX-X1A. going from stock crap to IC Diamond 7
-
Misread. Nevermind.

Interesting to see that 136 Pre-orders have gone through split between Toronto (90) and Vancouver (46). My guy says they are expecting 100 in the first shipment, give or take... Fingers crossed at least 50 come out west as I preordered last week and may be on the bubble... -

Sweet, should be a nice upgrade from a G51.
This model is very alienwareish looking to me, if it just had color leds I think it would be like the spiritual successor to the M17X.
I cant believe they still didn't give us a full keyboard
it makes me sad!
Its 17" big for crying out loud give me a full number pad and non embedded arrow keys. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
It's good enough for me! You know you want it, don't you?
-
Hmmm, playing 4 player Micro Machines on that keyboard might be tough...
-
I was looking into this game, and for the PC, I'd recommend waiting until after it comes out. It appears to have a number of DRM measures that even 2K doesn't know exactly how they are working together. So it looks like it could be a huge mess especially with a new machine.
On topic, I'm looking forward to hearing the first set of reviews as I'm still interested in this system. The only thing that worries me is the cooling system. Pulling in air from the keyboard could be a bad thing for me as I do drop crumbs in there on occasion. Also the possible lack of a Blue Ray player sort of bothers me so I'm interested to see how that pans out. -

I didnt tell you? I have one on the way lol. Yes its a big gpu downgrade but since I do not game on my laptop anymore and mostly use it for multimedia and encoding its a good upgrade in those areas.
I do like the W90 more still in the looks department by a good margin, sleek flat black inside, no strange curves, normal lid hinge, and the brushed aluminum outside.
But seriously look at the waisted space on the sides of the keyboard, I really really wish they would give us a full regular desktop like keyboard, that alone would make me upgrade from my W90 since I want to do excel work on my laptop and I cant. I end up using the work computer just due to the keyboard. -
Just get one of those full size ultra slim Bluetooth keyboards you can slide in your backpack
