Ok, disabled superfetch and reduced the restore space to 2 gigs. Problem solved. This vista thing is driving me batty. Its not that its bad so much as I dont know how to do what I want. With xp I knew exactly what I wanted or needed to do in most any given situation.

BTW, I did move my mp3 library over to music and at 40 odd gigs it thashed on that for a fair while but that was a few days ago.

Going back to superfetch I am not noticing any real difference in load times but I dont use a predictable pattern of running programs so Im thinking it wasnt doing me much good anyways.

Still tweaking here.... With XP I would have already killed the page file but I wasnt sure about vista needing it for god knows what reason. Yes or no to the page file?

I just leave mine at a specified page file of 1024/1024 just incase there is an app that may need one. With 6 gigs of ram ive never run out of memory for all that i do on both my desktop or laptop.

He guys, just got my W90 recently with Vista Ultimate 64. Do you guys have some links to drivers/tweaks I can install to increase performance? The only game I've tried so far is WoW and I get 25~ fps everywhere. WoW isn't too intensive and should be able to run much better on this beast.

I've installed the Overdrive tool and it won't let me overclock for some reason.

This is also the first time I've used Vista.

Follow that guide to the T and you should not have any problems . Now since its the first time you have used vista then i will say this guide while super easy to follow is still not for the Noobs(no offense) so just becareful or consult with someone who is more computer savvy (again no offense) .

    Thanks for the link.

I'm a long time XP user, vista is just a little bit new to me. My old tricks seem to work, but vista's UAC and administrator limits are annoying.

You can disable all the UAC stuff very easy. Control Panel/User Accounts then on or off .

    I did it !!
    I pass 15000 on 3dmark06 !! :D
All I did was overclock cpu only.. I did not touch the gpu setting at all.
    I got 15218 with OCed @ 2.8ghz that's 40% OC.
    Also got 14391 @ 2.6ghz
    13361 @ 2.4ghz
    12848 @ 2.3ghz
    11384 @ 2.0ghz

I do have a question however..
Will Overclocking too much can damage the cpu? ie..burn..?
It's my first time playing OC and kinda nervous..
What would be a safe Overclock % for everyday use?
I heard 10% from some people and also 20% from some people..
Is 30% overclocking is safe at all ?

    Thank you.
    :)

3DMark06 is heavily dependant on the GPU, so overclocking it will yield better results. CPU speed helps, of course.

Can't say about safe overclock, if you want to be sure its stable, run orthos full blast for like 24 hours and it should give you some indication. Cpu's are unique, so you just need to find out. Overclocking can damage components and you need to take note on any odd behaviour when overclocking. It will at least shorten their lifespans.. but a cpu will last a long time and will become obsolete long before it would "wear" out. I wouldn't worry about it.

I tried orthos with OCed @2.8ghz and froze my computer.. hahaha..
However, overclock to 2.6ghz seemed very stable.. temperature was below 60s.
What is the max temperature for the cpu? was it like 70s?

Yeah I have it turned off, I still get problems with some things telling me I'm not an administrator and such though.

I followed that guide completely, got my T9600 to 3.2ghz, hit some blue screens with slightly more. Temps are only at 37c with this OC, so I feel it could go higher.

Does anyone know stable overclocks for the GPU? I read somewhere 600/900, I'm afraid to mess with it though since I've never bothered OCing any of my old nVidia cards.

About updating the bios, I'm not sure which bios I need to select from the Asus download page. After looking around the bios I saw it was version 2.8x.

I know the 3870's are CPU dependant. It looks like this is also the case with the 4870's. As you can see from fatmandoo's data, his 3dmark scores ranged from 11,384 @ 2.0ghz to 15,218 @ 2.8ghz.

So Jaguar, while 3dmark scores are heavily dependant on the Gpu, the Gpu's in these ATI cards are heavily dependant on the speed of the CPU as well.

Everyone who has achieved high 3dmark scores with the 3870's or 4870's has done so with a fast processor or a slower processor that has been overclocked.

Theres no bios updates for the machine itself just yet if thats the bios your talking about ? .

The machine is pretty happy at 3.2 . i did get up to 3.6 but it flaked out finally and inbetween then my numbers were not going up even though the clocks were.

600/900 is fine but just do some benchmarks of the befores and afters with the old and new clocks to see if its even worth it .

BTW fatmandoo, 2.0ghz to 2,8ghz, pretty respectable.

I'd love to go from my stock 3.06 to 3.86! I can only get to just under 3.6ghz.

06 is all CPU thats why its a horrible test these days as most games are more GPU dependent the CPU. Your overall 06 score is climbing each time you up the CPU but its going up because of your CPU score . Just look at the results each time you run it at different CPU intervals. The only true test these days is Vantage TBH and can tell you alot about what to expect from your machine.

Agreed, but still.....a rig getting 10,000 on 3dmark isn't going to keep up with a rig getting 15,000 in gaming. It is less valid these days but large differences are still meaningful.

Synthetic benchmarks don't always reflect the real world gaming experience. IMAO the best way to evaluate is to look at the FPS at a given resolution and settings while maintaining clean fluid gameplay.

use HW monitor for your CPU temps but sadly it does not support our GPUs yet so i just monitor them from the ATI control panel for now .

I think Ati was 90s for gpu I believe..

So earlier I went through the tutorial quadzilla linked me to, and I'm still getting garbage FPS in WoW. I stay at a constant 25-30.

Anyone have any ideas why? I noticed I don't have crossfire in my CCC, not even sure it's supposed to be.

Nope your not supposed to have a crossfire option also leave catalyst AI on standard . You should be getting blazing framerates in WOW but since i dont play im not sure whats going on .Do you have your machine Overclocked and do you have turbo gear on ? You power options in the right hand corner where the little battery icon should be on Overclocked mode or high performance depending on which setting you chose.

As for me, I had to do the bios update on both master and slave gpu with modified master bios.
And I used driver sweeper for old driver and update with 9.4 after.
I get 70fps and over on Grid and COD waw.. with OCed cpu.

ok, seems you guys are going to need to get with quad or vic to get them scores up.

and right now..it's like 2 games really using a quad.. all this benchmarking stuff is a speed/compatibility thing.

for your gaming run you can run through the first part of crysis using fps to monitor your fps through out the first level. use ken from gentech computers video as your basis of scoring your systems performance in real world gaming. then report back your findings...

dondadah, that picture ain't working for me...

It certainly appears that the QX9300 benches better in everything however your Q9000 benched slightly lower than mine in '06 but your Vantage score was noticeably better than the T9600. In games the consensus appears to be that both really don't make much of a difference now (except maybe the overclocked QX9300). I think obviously in the future the quad will have the advantage. Of course at that point hopefully there will be some variant of the i7 out that will run on this chipset and then it will all be mute.

Seems like my vantage marks are about 2k lower than people with the same oc.

...why? I still don't understand why I'm getting such poor fps either.
