OH!!! about your card thing whatisnotebook

try rolling back your driver and then reinstall the driver that is on the ASUS disk. if that donst work try reinstalling the driver you are currently using it could have been a bad install. or an unstable driver. that is comming from a FEW friends who know about comuters more than i do

GOOD LUCK and goodnight im going to sleep

I just bought one of the fastest laptops IN THE WORLD!!!

:)) I have been waiting a long time to say that)

Thanks for all the info guys, you have no idea how difficult it is to spend 2400 on a laptop. You have made it a much easier decision.

This is more than I spent on my first car : )

I talked with the people over at DNA Drivers and they should have 9.4 drivers out tomorrow for Vista and Windows 7. I sent them our device ids, so they could put it in their new build. Hopefully this work, as im not as brave as Vicious is to mod my vga bios (you are one brave guy...props!).

Device IDs wont be enough sadly . You will still end up with the same code 43 error on the second card, trust me when i say we tried everything imaginable to get them to work pre flashing .

As I mentioned before, the Q9000 X2 ETA into ASUS US warehouse is 5/11. I would guess that the A1 is just an X2 that the others add the BR and 2nd HDD to and not a direct ASUS factory model.

Also ASUS US just received a shipment of X1's yesterday 4/28 (not sure how many). Pretty good based on the 4/29 ETA I mentioned days ago. Any guess where they will show up for sale?(less my replacement unit) Canada Egg / US Egg / BB  Maybe they are just filling all the RMA/DOA replacement orders.

Also since I have only dealt with the Egg this one time can any more expericenced users explain if their wacked out pricing practices are "par for the course"?

If you look at my prior post the US Egg had the X2 = A1 but less the extra goodies. Canada Egg had the X2 $300USD cheaper (after conversion) than the US Egg X2 or the A1. Now they have changed the Canada Egg X2 price up but its still a little cheaper than the A1 and $200USD cheaper than the US X2.

The big head scratcher is the US Egg X2 is now $50 more than the A1  I mean is this just because they realized they were the only game in town with a W90 Q9000 currently "in stock" so they want to take advantage of it while they could?

I had the same issue. I have been using Egg exclusively for the last 9 years for all of my tech purchases but the price increase and the lack of Blue Ray and 2nd hard drive made me go with Gentech.

I don't even think Egg gives you a backpack. I cannot verify.

I bought an -x2 from Newegg.ca. The price, with shipping, was more than $200 less than what I would have paid elsewhere for an A1. I did get the backpack and bluetooth mouse...in fact, when you open the box, the computer is shipped inside the backpack.

I have another question; when we flash the slave card to master, are we flashing it with the current unmodded master bios or is it another modded bios?

Your choice I have 3 bios.

    Original
    Modified for higher Overdrive overclock
Modified for higher Overdrive overclock + higher voltage.

If your going to use the original you can just flash the slave to master and be done, if you want to use one of the modified ones, you will want to flash both cards.

It's all becoming clear now. This gives me lots of options to play around with.

I thought that overdrive was clocking up both cards as I moved the sliders but it turns out that the slave card would not clock past the stock 550/850, though the master would go to 600/900.

The flickering I had in TF2 is back. It looks like one card isn't properly rendering one particular texture. I've tried adjusting every setting in the game video options but nothing seems to work. Flashing is the next thing to try.

I thought ATI had fixed all the driver issues of yesteryear. !

You mean to tell me we are still having issues with drivers in 2009?

Are you guys flashing the BIOS to increase performance or to fix texture issues?

Flashing the bios to install drivers beyond the factory ones. When the cards is in the Master/slave setting there is a code43 error on the slave card . When set to Master/Master there is not .There have been tons of Crossfire profiles/fixes since 8.12(factory drivers) that its not even funny. Why they chose those drivers for a machine in 2009 is beyond my understanding.

I think I'm going to throw up...... I just spent $2400 on what is supposed to be the most technologically advanced machines in existence and I have buggy drivers?

Is there a tutorial for this process? I have modded the crap out of stuff in the past but I don't have time to deal with buggy drivers these days.

Is there a rep from ATI on the boards?

Lol no ATI rep to be found around these boards period . No Asus rep really either , there was a tech from Asus that showed up to give us some basic updates which most of if not all was pretty much useless . With most notebooks the users ie US have to take action into our own hands otherwise we would be living in the stone age with the drivers etc .

Vicious made a guide under the Asus board section , look for it and it will show you how to flash the cards and it comes packed with the drivers, modded infs ,bios's etc etc.

Here is vicous's guide to tweaking, flashing and overclocking the W90.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=371558

I recommend giving it a try for yourself. If you read carefully, go step by step and ask questions if you get stuck, it shouldn't be too bad.

I've had to go through this with every computer I've owned, but it's most acute with notebooks. To fit this stuff into that small form factor, certain compromises need to be made. Manufacturers tend to go overboard erring on the side of caution. As a result, notebook drivers can be as much as a year old.

There is very little chance you will do something to permanently fry your unit, though it's not impossible.

On this unit, I've already flashed my Vertex, cloned it into my c: drive and overclocked my cpu from 2.0 to 2.75.

Flashing the slave card to master is next.

Thanks striker for the kind words . Sure i would love to make a few bucks in the process and help someone in that time to boot . Yes i got Setfsb working because i ripped the machine apart to find the right PLL(so no one would be overclocking there machine with more then Turbogear) and also the latest ATI CCC, but im not looking for credit either (although its nice to hear once in awhile :)) . If he decides he needs help or just does not want to be bothered then great ill be happy to help no problem.

Ugh, ok so my symptoms returned a day after reformatting my X25 SSD and starting from scratch with Vista Ultimate x64. Everything was fine for a day until I shut down the pc over night. When I booted up after work this afternoon the same thing started happening again where Turbo Gear cycles through the 3 modes every couple seconds. But I have been able to determine exactly what's causing it and am hoping and praying someone can provide a solution outside of me having to return it.

So basically what's happening as far as I can tell is that it's not the Turbo Gear program causing the problem at all. It's the MEDIA KEY above my keyboard. Its almost like someone is spamming the Turbo Gear media key. I have since disabled Turbo Gear from the bios and from start up. But basically my media key lights flash still cuz it's still trying to run Turbo Gear. Also, it mainly occurs when I'm have a Firefox or IE window open, my lights flash like it's Christmas. When I minimize the window(s) it stops. Also, I believe this is what's causing the crashing as well, my screen will flash vertical bars for half a second then go black, the pc is still on but it's dead, I can't do anything but hold down the power button and reboot.

I'm writing to you while running windows in safe mode with networking. No crashing, no media keys flashing. I should mention that the brightness slider still functions in this mode but nothing else since none of the programs associated with them are loaded. I did notice the brightness slider lights flash once or twice here without me touching a thing so something is still randomly accessing the media keys but it's not nearly as bad when in normal mode when I'm on the internet and it looks like my brightness slider is flashing Morse code to me.

If anyone has any solutions I would be eternally grateful. I really REALLY don't want to have to return this beautiful machine! PLEASE HELP I'M DESPERATE!

One of those programs runs those keys its like the ATK programs cant remember exactly which one . I was actually going to uninstall all those because theres FN+shortcut keys(+the volume slider is to sensitive and annoys me :)) that do all the same stuff , Sound, brightness etc so there really is no need for them and there is deffinitely no need for the Turbo key period because it always uses the lowest turbo setting which is useless. So you just need to uninstall those ATK programs one at a time or look at the Asus drivers under W90vp(google asus drivers) for a better description of what each one does and remove that one.

Ok so now that I have the driver issue solved...

What is the ideal external monitor to hookup to the HDMI output of this thing?

I would think a nice 1080P LCD from sony or Samsung would look nice.

Any pics posted of current setups and what to stay away from?

Its worked on every HDTV ive tried no problem. The best of the LCD is more personal preference as to which looks better as a monitor . What ever lcd you hook it up to you want to make sure it does True 1:1 pixel mapping for the sharpest pic.

Yes that seems to be what i was talking about its just which one exactly does what is a little trickier without trial and error. Its more then likely that one of the programs that gets uninstalled is going to take away all those slider functions . That button is most like jammed down how or has a short in it of sorts .You can fix this temporarily but its by no means a permanent solution and you should have Asus fix it or have justin replace your machine whichever will be easier on both of you. I dont have my machine with me at the moment so i can figure it out for you otherwise i would help ya.

Oh and if your using SETFSB to overclock your machine then you can just uninstall Turbogear all together . This may fix it till you find another solution and you can still retain all your slider functionality .

Ahhh you could be correct about the media key having a short or being a stuck. I notice that all the other media keys turn white when off except the Turbo Gear key, it's stuck on blue, is it the same for you?

Well my brand new X1 arrived today :) Now lets just pray it doesn't become my third RMA/DOA

So now to see where these X1's end up being sold. Canada Egg still has them listed as active but not available where the US Egg doesn't have them listed.

FYI just in case you are curious the first two numbers in your S/N are the build year and month so all the X1/X2/A1s start with "9" i.e. 2009. My first two X1's were Feb builds "2" or 92......... This latest X1 is a 94......so it was built this month in April :)

Thanks, yeah its been a real fun time, considering I was right behind -=$tR|k3r=- in the Egg checkout line back on 2/19 and over two months later its Xmas for the third time

I give ASUS Tech and Customer Support a big KUDOS because they have been nothing but great to deal with through these past months and RMA's. I never bothered with the EGG at any point after I clicked the confirmation to purchase and I feel better for it. ;)

I was happy to see that my latest W90 was an April build so maybe all the borked stuff has already been built and shipped (and promptly returned).

You should have ken take a pic of himself because after all he is another part of the essential ingredients to your W90 :).

Had mine hooked up to our SHARP 52" D64U over the weekend. Looked very good!

We also just got a new 65" at work that I'm dying to try out with the W90 :D

I'm pretty sure it's always lit blue.

One thing I've noticed is that loading certain media applications seem to trigger Turbo Gear Extreme. For me launching Asus Touch Media always seems bring up the Turbo Gear icon as well. It has also happened once or twice when running PowerDVD 9.
It's no biggie and Turbo Gear can be easily closed, but it's kinda weird...
Other then that it never happens unless I intentionally activate it.
