I guess I'll wait a bit until they are more regularly in stock. I'll keep using my sff pc for now and my netbook when that is more convenient. I have a few other projects (that cost $) going anyway so this unit being out of stock isn't that bad timing wise. It will just delay my expenditure a bit.

The term idiot can be a pretty broad one . We really need a scaling system with multiple questions to figure out how big of an idiot(or not an idiot) someone is, then we can figure out if said person is up to the task :D.

Thats a good question but id put it at about a 7(out of 10) for the guide, because of the INFs needing to be put in the directorys and the fact you have to run the ATI installer but not actually install anything that way . Alot of that stuff could have people scratching there heads :D

God bless, finally I install 9.4 drivers successfully.
Now I am considering buildiing RAID0, but according to the user manual, that will delete all the data on the hard drives including the recovery partition and express gate. Could it be OK that using the recovery DVDs to recover windows and express gate after building RAID 0?

i guess what my question is if i do screw something up, how easily can it be reversed?

it sounded like that guy who flashed the wrong card basically has a heavy $2.5k paper weight.

I know there is a serious memory limitation with XP but has anyone ran benchmarks with it?

Also is Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit the stock OS?

    Thanks

Yeah that's right. recovery surely includes the setting of RAID 0. Perhaps I will build RAID 0 when Windows 7 is available

Haven't seen any XP benches yet that I can recall.

And yeah, Vista HP 64bit is the default OS that the W90 comes with.

The chances of you screwing something up are pretty slim but the real key is take your time and read the darn directions carefully and more then once . Some people get so excited or nervous or both that they tend to overlook the small details like flashing a slave bios to the master card then POOF!! "wow thats a fancy doorstop you got there" .

Flashing the slave card was very straight forward for me. I just used the m98-1 original master bios in the atiwinflash program, following the diagram and it worked.

    Somehow, I seem to have loaded the 9-4 drivers...This is what my ccc says in 'software information';

    Driver Packaging Version 8.551.2-081109a-071842C
    Catalyst® Version 09.4
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 7.01.01.838
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
    Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0621
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8200
    Catalyst® Control Center Version 2008.1109.2155.39248

Does this jive with what others are showing?

I raided mine without difficulty with the recovery discs. I have no idea what would be involved if you wanted to try and hang on to the recovery partition but if you just want to setup raid 0 you switch it to raid in the bios, run the raid utiility on boot, then install via the recovery discs. You get few options to partition with the recovery disc which is pretty lame but you can always adjust them later. I have no stuttering issues.

Just to confirm, I dont use expressgate so gave it no mind but I just tried it and it starts up but once you select an action (web, music, whatever) the drive just grinds and you never go anywhere. Something to think about if you want to hang onto it.

You can use Acronis to do a backup, setup raid 0 and then put the image back on and it will work fine.

not sure about expressgate it may not work anymore, but your windows & stuff will be fine. Your just gonna need an external hdd to put the image on.

I updated the posted guide with more details, but not the downloaded package guide yet. I even debated making a .bat file to copy the .inf files to the right place for you.

Im thinking maybe if you copy the .inf files over and then just run the installer launcher and not the unpack.exe it may install the drivers just fine and make it easier on some people, they just need to make sure to do a custom install so they can choose not to insttall the CCC, or just do a simple install and then install that CCC you posted after.

I could do maybe a .bat file series.

1st one runs the unpacker, 2nd one copies the infs, 3rd one runs the installer, 4th one runs the CCC installer you found.

They would just be named, Step 1, Step 2, etc...

Would make the process very automated.

I'll try to set it up when I get my unit back and determin if its better/easier than the current way of doing it.

Na, not sure if your being sarcastic since you have the " :)" but the raid is hardware level not OS level, so if you install via the recovery disk your off to a fresh start with Windows & Raid, how else would somebody install Windows onto Raid?

But the restore disk does not write a new recovery partition I do not think, and I doubt it does express gate, though you should be able to get the express gate installer off the disk or from the Asus downloads section.

on the G50V the early version of express gate did not work in raid 0 but later they released a version that did, so the stock version for theW90 probably works, but cant say for sure.

I never really use it anyways so I never even bothered to install it back.

Id definitely install the newest version off it from the asus site though after your new OS install, it wont work just from the recovery of the OS.

It will be a tough go for sure to work it into the target unit but I am too old to say never except in reference to something I haven't done yet. Sure way to eat crow. If it comes, great, if not whatever. I have this laptop now and I am very satisfied with it. When I buy the next one in 23 months this will all be old news.

I think I ended up stumbling my way into copying the drivers without installing, much as you describe. When I tried to copy the modded inf files into the ATI folder, it didn't install the 9-4 drivers. Instead, I did an install by doing a manual search from the, 'update driver' options in system.

This would be fantastic...though I don't mind installing drivers and such. I've never completely borked a computer beyond my ability to bring it back from the brink...yet.

Once I know what programs are working for people, I don't mind abusing my os with random installs.

If anyone is refering to me as the "guy who flashed wrong and had a 2.5k paperweight" I just want to verify, I had this blanking screen problem prior to me doing anything. I did flash the second card correctly, but couldnt get the 9.4 drivers to install, but I think I know why that is now. Anyway, I have been running the pc for about 6 hours now with no lockups for blank screens, so maybe things are starting to get ok. Played Fallout 3 last night for a couple hours and no issues.

Like I said, when I did it I flashed the slave then opened up the drivers and let them run. Without rebooting I used the new inf and installed the 9.4s again from disc and everything went fine. Card is flashed, 9.4 installed, working ccc.

Has anyone that had the flickering issue, tried uninstalling CCC? Flickering disappeared after the uninstall for me, and the only reason i can think of is the overdrive. Just want to test to see if that causes the random black/white display issue as well.

guys do you feel that a T9550 cpu (2.66ghz) overclocked with the turbo gear button will reach the 20.000 on benchmarks as i have seen with an other cpu?

i would like a little bit better normal hz but this is the customization of it in Uk and i cant change it. if anyone knows a uk shop with w90 with better cpu tell me please.

I like the turtle beach 5.1 surround sound headsets personally (purchased cheaper from 3rd party vendors). My only gripe is that their AKR8 headset's "audio advantage srm" usb soundcard module doesn't have a fully function vista 64 driver yet - it just maps the front left/right channels to the rear ones for now. I also have the HPA2 headset on my desktop computer. The HPA2 uses an in-line amplifier unit with individual volume control wheels for center, rear, front speakers of the cans. The amplifier/vol control unit's connection splits off the analog outputs of your soundcard (black, green, orange + mic). With that setup you can use your desktop speakers and the headset at any time, including simultaneously if you wanted to. I'm not sure if the W90Vp has the multiple analog outputs though so the usb version might be the only option unless you use an expresscard soundcard with analog output module.

X2 in stock at egg but I'm passing on the x2 on newgg since it pretty much same price but lacks the bluray drive and 2nd 320 hdd. I'll prob wait on other vendors to get the A1's back in stock regularly in the future.

My cube-ish sff pc has a qx9650 in it which I might someday swap into the W90vp since I believe they are both socket LGA755. I got a good deal on that cpu off ebay awhile back. Some guy was selling a bunch of them at a big discount. I'd have to feel pretty confident vs RMAing the notebook though so it would be awhile before I tried it.

If it all worked out I could consider selling the sff pc with the q9000 in it since the W90Vp is actually more powerful (the sff has only a single 9600gt) so could do everything that the sff did and more. The W90vp even has a hdmi and vga output. That brings me to a question though - can you output to the VGA and the HDMI at the same time(turning off the laptop's lcd display) ?. I could manage that on my hp before it burnt up but it was a bit flaky getting it initialized sometimes. I ask this because my main desk has a LCD monitor and a VGA monitor that I hook the sff pc up to. I would like to be able to connect the W90vp up at that desk in the same way. The monitors are both widescreen and I run them both at 1920x1200 resolution.
