. 6GB ram is ok if you main goal is gaming... But i can't say that if u run 3 virtual machines + visual studio.net 2008 like me lol.
Looks like i will have to pick 12 gigs and two ocz vertex so we can have some competition striker :X -

i still believe the ssd is the big deal not the ram. and more expensive though -
.
But i have to admit that is pretty usual see my desktop using 8gigs of ram lol. -

Btw... Win 7 FTW. -
Vista does use more resources for its graphic "bells & whistles" especially if you have aero/transparency turned on in the gui for example. However a good chunk of the ram it "uses" is actually a prefetch/cache. Some people believe vista is *using* all that ram, when much of it is actually available for use as needed on demand. Essentially vista is guessing what you are going to use next and keeping some of that data loaded into the ram. If you run an app that needs more than the "free" ram, it will release a lot of the ram it is juggling/has pre-loaded.
That said more ram is better (and more cpu cores!), especially if you are doing graphics rendering/editing, compression/decompression, video converting and rendering, virtualization, etc..
XP minimum for not severely retarding performance is 1gb, 2gb+ for heavy apps. Vista min is probably 2gb, and 4gb+ for heavy apps. On my desktop systems I run 4gb currently, in vista 64. My netbook gets a long with 1gb ram in xp running lightweight apps for the most part. -
You may have a point. Ill have to re-consider, again.

Regarding that tigerdirect refurb... after my go7600 nvidia / hp laptop burned up I am shying away from nvidia based laptop gpu's. There were known mfg defects in nvidia notebook gpus as reported by many tech sites and even nvidia's own stock reports, and as evidenced by their stockholder's suing them. Had hp fully supported me instead of telling me I would have to ship it back on my shipping cost and pay $400+ dollars to have it fixed, I might have felt differently. Instead I kept the hp as a paperweight and now enthusiastically advise against hp in any replies I give the many people who ask my advice on hardware purchases.
So getting back to that refurb at tigerdirect, a 30 day warranty on that would not sit well with me at all, and if you go for the extended (if they allow it on that refurb), it would be back up to around $1k that you could put toward a new radeon based notebook with longer warranty. Just my opinion. -

OMG!!! IS IT HAPPENING!!!
THE END IS NEAR!!! -
HOLY COW DUDE!!! I forgot all about that!!!!
Didn't they have a 60-80% fail rate?

atomcontracting Notebook Enthusiast
Hello all,
I have been reading this thread for some time now and really it is what made my mind up on my next Laptop. I also want to say, that my order was placed to Ken at GenTech, one he is in SoCal and I as a business owner always try to support local businesses. two, and most important his reputation from here. I have not been disappointed, not only has he been prompt but helpful. I would highly recommend buying from GenTech.
Now the waiting Game....................
Thanks again for all the info.

what is so special with patriot? its generally unavailable like asus w90 for now.

how would the 4870 crossfire setup compare to 280m SLI?
im debating between the w90 vs the upcoming sager m980u.
anyone have any advice?
ive already had a sager 9260 and an asus z70va.. loved them both for the time i had them. both have superb quality. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
that is the big question everyone is asking
edit: someone with a msi witha 4850 and the sager with the 280m need to run benchmarks. and then from there we need to see if crossfire is better then sli. then we have the answer. -
I think the 280s will be more potent based on single card scores. Some think the competition with the ati parts will help keep the card price in check but Im thinking the sager is going to be a fair bit more ching with the sli than the W90.

Now they're out of stock. They show in stock but if you pull the final trigger it'll say there isn't enough stock to fulfill the order.[edit]Scratch that, they show OOS now[/edit]
I'm a software developer by trade and also use 3 or 4 virtual machines at a time so the extra memory will come in handy. I see a few people mentioning WoW, sounds like we'll have to form a W90 raiding guild.
Oh i can't wait to get my lappy back from Ken! the anticipation... -
-
quit showing them pictures of the cheap ram and go buy the 4-4-4-12 ones
-
If anyone is interested, I have a 10% coupon from Newegg to use toward an W90 X2, or upgrades, whatever.
PM me if you want it... first come first serve... and yes you can have it for free!
Not sure if they have any in W90s in stock though... -

The problem with WoW is that its not really a persistent world... its persistent worlds. There are a ton of different servers, and you can't freely move existing characters between them. Even though you can transfer to a lower population server infrequently and for a fee, you can't just switch a server to play with friends and then switch back to play with your long time guildmates on your main server for example. I don't play the game much anymore but when I used to put more time into it, it would always bother me when I'd run into an old friend or someone like my mailman etc that I found plays WoW, but we are all so ingrained in their own server peer groups and leveled characters that I never play with them. You could always start a new character on their realm but the time involved in that game is much better applied all on one server.
I do plan on playing WoW on this notebook when I get it. The sager sounds interesting but unless it was more or less the same price as the W90vp I wouldn't even consider it. I'm also not confident in nvidia notebook gpu's stability and nvidia's support of defects to their oem's. -
Newegg is sold out, not only that but it looks like they shipped out a bunch of used systems. People where posting about receiving used power supplies and scratched accessories.
I got my W90 from Ken instead of Newegg because for the same price I get an extra hard drive and a Blu Ray for free, and it sounds like he helps out the guys in the forum when they have issues also. That is a guy I want to do business with.
-
I looked at the Sager and to price out a comparable system it would have been +1500. I also understand the Nvidia issues of the last few years are still lingering on some of the high end mobile chip sets due to heat. I had a chance to check out a W90 over the weekend and it looks very nice. It has a glass piece across the screen and the LCD is the best I have seen. I have never seen a Sager in person.
-
I bought my W90-X2 from newegg when it was $2250, no one was topping that price at the time... and mine was brand new and untouched... which is why it had to be RMA'd by me. lol Bad second card.
Had I been looking to purchase one now instead of then, I think I would have bought it from Ken. But I had bluray in two of my previous laptops and never used it. Plus 320gb is plenty of on hand space for now... got (2) 1TB external drives for everything else. I was better off with the price reduction than the extras. -
-
The dual drives are for speed not extended storage. RAID 0 allows you to read from both drives at the same time. This makes a huge difference loading levels on games. I also have 3 1080P capable devices and have been waiting to buy a Blue Ray drive to check out the super high resolution picture.
Thanks for the offer on the coupon, I just ordered a Hanspree 28 inch LCD yesterday and would have used it

IF file size is small it can actually take longer to load something in raid 0 than with just a single drive. As if it cant strip the file between the drives it only can read it off one drive, also raid 0 by nature basically doubles your access time.
As im sure everybody knows by now that access time is the biggest greatness of SSD's.
The second primary con of raid 0 is that if just one drive fails you lose the data that was on both drives.
Id use it for video editing, professional photoshop (large images), but gaming alone I do not think is a good enough reason to use raid 0. I have had the same system in and out of raid and the speed gains for gaming were small for most games.
Due to the nature of SSD having practically 0ms access time and supposedly a lower fail rate, raid 0 sounds like a more natural thing to do.
However a good SSD like the Intel or Vertex is already so fast you dont really need more speed. But if you get one of the cheaper SSD's that dont quite have the speed, raid 0 may be a logical way to get decent speed out of cheaper SSD units to save some $$$ as they still have the fast access times.
Only problem would be both of your drives being SSD = low storage space. -
If I wanted to get an SSD what model are you recommending? I know the early drives released around the holidays had stuttering issues. I would like to RAID 0 a couple just for testing.
-
The difference in raid 0 in this configuration is barely noticeable in most cases. Not at all in other cases. In a few cases like when wmp was initially building my mp3 library it was much faster. Still since I need to have 1 logical drive for backup purposes up north it was a no brainer for me. For most people I would hesitate to recommend it on a performance basis.
-
ssd for games is just as you said about 3000 post earlier...does nothing for it except it's initial start up. and 95 percent or better are ran entirely in memory/video memory.
the patriot 120 gb fits the bill you speak of..
inexpensive but slower read and write speeds, but still far better than raid0, but it does stutter...
but the intel is still faster on reads...i think by 20MB's or so. writes are up in the air... -
OMG!!! 450MB read!!! those are sick numbers.... What model Vertex? I bet it costs a boatload.
-
yeah, it cost 760 bucks for the two drives.
i ran raid for a few days for testing, but broke the raid apart and just ran one drive. i put the other one in my desktop. this was one the best upgrades i could have bought. hands down! has nothing to do with gaming numbers but has all to do with os stuff and running and loading business apps.
you really only need one in a laptop with dual bays. throw a 500 gig 7200 rpm drive for storage of files and your 120 gig for your os and programs -
vertex no doubt ... i have the 30 gig just for programs and OS

I just posted a deal thread for the 120gb vertex, its in stock at ecost and has a $40 MIR making it $315, not bad if you have the money/want for it.
I have the want but not the money
I know SSD is going to get better/cheaper and it should happen sooner than later so its hard to buy in now knowing this.
Anybody want to explain the SSD 'studdering" issue? I guess it just does not hold a stable read/write speed and it fluctuates? But is this really a issue since its so fast already? -
exactly mr moo.
vicious
picture you doing a rendering project and it stops for 5 seconds every 30 seconds or so. your drawing on your pad and the line stops for 5 seconds then picks up... these are worse case scenarios and it was doing these things and more. i wanted to keep the patriot because it was like 250 bucks, but in the end...i took it back and bought the more reliable one. would have got an intel, but it was only 80 gigs and the disk writes for large files we're considerably lower. meaning: me moving 5 to 10 gig files around on the drive/ from one ssd to that ssd/from raid0 to and from it/from the network back and forth. and it was far worse with the patriot on the read & write side of things. if money was a problem, i probably would have kept the patriot and hoped for a firmware update. the update helped the ocz vertex out allot!
edit: that 20MB is per drive installed so it's about 50MB or so.. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah the vertex is the way to go, like I said $315 for the 120gig right now.
I need to go see if live.com does cashback on that store, may be able to shave off a few more $$$ too. I am a great deal hunter
edit: yep ecost has 2% cashback so thats another $7 off.
now to go see if I can find any $$$ saving cupons -
dammn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if i wasn't buying my i7 setup this week, i would grab another ssd for my ibm thinkpad t61p!
man! -
Question for the woners!
Did you guys ever play games using the IZ3D drivers with this laptop? Is it stable? Why no one talks about it? I want yo try it when they finally shipp mine i already have the glasses. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Is that the 3d tech that requires a 120hz monitor?
If so this is only a 60hz monitor.
I saw some killer deals on 120hz monitors at sams club yesterday. That had the 47" Sharp Aquios for $1400ish and thats a downright steal for a monitor so big and also one of the best brands on the market.
I paid $1000 for my 37" Westy a few years back and it was a steal at the time, but finally prices coming down on nice LCD HD TV's -
say, i just noticed you and this get a ssd fund...lol
when that come about?
lol
