Perhaps the Newegg x2's came in a separate shipment from Taiwan to Newegg directly, skipping the Asus in California.

Customs can take a while and do you think its possible the other w90's might be waiting on a shipping dock somewhere for inspection before they get to the US distribution center for re-sellers?

I don't know , just tossing ideas out there..
Newegg cannot legally sell a refurbished system as new.. My w90vp-x2 was new.. No seals had been broken.. every item in perfect packing condition when I got mine from them.

And ps.. Based on the serial number from my W90 , it was manufactured in April.

Absolutely not , we don't know for sure, since some people posting have not listed a problem in their reviews of their purchase.

-- As I posted before, my notebook was made in April 09, based on the serial number of it, as I was told by my tech rep.

Striker was saying, "wait for the next batch " and this is the next batch of w90's.

A1's or X2's ,, the problems weren't related to harddrives or optical drives, so the primary guts are the same in them. If Asus is fixing anything its related to bios/gpu/and maybe display screen. My screen was gorgeous... so that wasn't the issue .. my problems were the 4870's and the unit recognizing 2 cards.

Yeah, my unit has a build date of April 09 and outside of the extras the original owner added, it has run fine.

As for grey/ vertical lines, honestly, if this happened once every blue moon, I wouldn't return it. Every day multiple times? Sure, but once a week? Month? A few times a week? Meh.....

For $2400 + I wouldn't expect anything to be interrupting my experience and gameplay "regularly". There are "I can live with it" things I would accept on a $500 laptop or LCD tv , but not anything expensive let a lone well over two grand. I know the hardware is worth it spec wise but this is a thousand dollars over the top of some pretty powerful gaming notebooks and in my opinion no one should be expected to live with screw-ups and bugs.

I'm glad I waited to order, and I'm still waiting. I really appreciate the info and experiences people have posted in this thread. This is a good chunk of money for me and posters here are giving me a good look before I leap.

    Hello Everyone,

I am back... I RMA my laptop about a month and a half ago. Everything was running fine.. so I thought :). I run 70 % of my games fine however the remaining 30 % crash after a few minutes of game play. Sometimes I get a bunch of horizontal lines and the system reboots after 15 seconds. I figured it was a driver issue but after revisiting this forum it does not look like a driver issue :(. I have installed the 9.5 catalyst drivers with one of the cards disabled and I get the same problem. So far I am quite disappointed at ATI and ASUS quality control. It seems to me like quite a few people are having issues... even with the newer models. I heard that new drivers are going to be released.. however I am somewhat skeptical. Has anyone actually resolved these issue without RMAing?

the good news:maybe its really a driver issue and games support if certain games always worked while others always didnt. what games had problem? newer or older ones?

the bad news: is that they didnt fix anything... at least this is what it seems

It can very well be a driver and game issue vs a hardware issue, thats why its a tough call sometimes . Unless you play and test every game/driver and then look to see if others with say similar desktop hardware with the same drivers/games are having the same issues then its hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

It crashed on grid and on wolverine. If I turn on anti aliasing, it bombs even quicker. One odd thing is that when running games like call of duty 4 / 5 and demi god, it runs perfectly fine. I ran those games for about 5+ hours. I just got off the phone with ASUS and they said they are going to try and repair it. They suspect the card is not seated properly but I highly doubt that. :(

this is the worst excuse i have ever heared from such a famous pc brand.

Quadzilla yes this is the exact method but if some games always work while others always dont this leads to the conclusion of driver issue or games that dont support atis and there are some of them out there. especially the older ones. except this desktop gpus are very much different to laptop versions so i would not rely on that.

Sukondis wolverine you mean the one relesed in 2009? its wholy new.this is not a good sign.you mean that these games didnt start at all or just stop working after a few minutes of playing? if this is it then it seems to be hardware issue because driver supports their graphics but stops working due to overheat (i dont think so) or something else related to gpus themselves. this is what my logic says.

I was also having TF2 issues dealing, (as far as I can tell), with video sync.

They mostly went away when I loaded the 9-4 drivers.

What drivers are you running Sukondis ? the factory ones ? have you thought about flashing your cards so they are both master that way you can install the newest drivers on them ?. Games these days are very dependent on the latest drivers and thats why it was so important that you can install them . Asus just like many other Notebook companys dont update there drivers which is a reality ive been facing for 10 years when it comes to laptops. This is where the community comes in and makes it possible to do so because without the new drivers your living in the past and performance sucks with the factory drivers for to many games to count. Wolverine runs on the unreal engine for instance and the 9.4 drivers brought many fixes and tweaks to it since 8.12(factory drivers) like Crossfire support among other things. Also the Unreal engine does not really support AA so dont even bother to force it through the CCC or the INF. Run the Game at Native res and it should look fantastic even without the need for AA.

I may be in the minority on these boards but I bought a W90vp-x1 from Newegg a while ago and have had ZERO issues with it gaming everynight. I have flashed the salve card and am running 9.4 without issues! There must be more like me out there. For those with problems, I am sorry. That really sucks and you should get brand new units from ASUS. This is indeed a premium machine and it deserves a premium warranty.

Rarely do people come on forums to say how great there machines are running etc and this is why even a few people with issues ( i know its more then a few but just saying) can have such a heavy influence on what people think is going on with everyones machines or the majority of owners. Regardless though Asus should and seems to be handling the issues but its taking more time then alot of people thought or wanted and now i can see others getting scared and starting to sway to something else. People need to understand that these issues can happen to any laptop so its no isolated to the W90 .

Aye it is the new wolverine... I go through a couple of fights and then kabooom... freeze... looping sound ... then after a couple of more seconds pc restarts. Same with Grid. What I noticed in grid though is that when you are in the main menu it flickers every so often. I see a line go across the screen then its back to normal :( The thing I am afraid is they are going to try it out for like 5 mins and say oh its all good and send it back :(.

Hmm.. I have not flashed the secondary card yet... but by installing the 9.5 drivers and having just the single card working.. it still went up in smoke.. which kinda gets me worried that it is not the secondary card causing the problems -_-. I have been reading through these 600 pages :) and have not read through everything yet :p it will take some time.. but for those who flashed their secondary cards.. was it to remedy the exact problem I am having?

Nah theres no certainty that will it fix your issue and if you have tried other drivers and your still having the same issue then it could be hardware . I would personally do a F9 restore from the factory and try your games again if you have not done this already . It could be your OS giving you the problems and if its not then i would just ship it back and not spend to much more time trying to troubleshoot your brandnew machine .

I've received the GLOD (grey lines of death) only while using the machine in 2d mode (mainly while surfing net), it's never happened while WoW is running. I've seen it happen now with the original slave vbios and also when switched to master with the 9.4 drivers.

To the other folks that have seen this manifest, did it also occur while you were NOT playing a 3d game?

Hopefully when fixed machines come out, the bios and/or vbios will correct the issue. I'm gonna lean on that hope for now.

Sometimes the cutting edge is really the BLEEDING edge (ow ow ow) but in this case I'd say it's worth it. I wouldn't give this machine up.

I would like to know the exact reason why you keep mentioning this... I just received a replacement from Asus that was born 04/09. I am wondering if there is some major difference between the future shipment and the one that I have now. Though, since I received this one, I have had absolutely NO issues whatsoever.

I remember you telling someone to stop beating around the bush and say what is on their mind... Im hoping you will practice what you preach.

Seems like te reason is you like to stroke your e-ego. I call bull.........you keep hinting around yet have said NOTHING as to why......I have had ZERO issues with mine. As for everyone, you are refering JUST to the people who have said anything here, which, is a REALLY small minority of ther poeple who bought this unit. Like was said earlier, people come to the forum and complain about the systems, not to compliment them. Quit stroking your ego and throwing tantrums (removing all your posts and gonna take my jacks and leave), if the systems have issues, and you can POINT TO A LEGITIMATE reason "everyone" should RMA then do so, or quit playing Mr "I know a secret".

I agree, but to constantly insinuate EVERYONE should RMA because "I know why but wont tell" is playing childish games. Quit stroking the e-ego and either drop it and quit playing "I have a secret and I wont tell" or tell us what they hell your talking about, I dont think that is asking to much.

Not sure what you think, but if you have inside information as some of us do sometimes. You have to be quiet about it completely, you cant hint that you know something as that is just as bad as revealing it.

My take is everybody should RMA, the more people that do the more Asus will have to face the problem and make sure to fix it. There is no reason to keep even a semi un-perfect unit, its brand new and needs to work right.

Given that some 95% of people will always mention they have a problem and only 5% or less bother to post when everything is fine, the numbers here are not bad showing that there are many perfectly working W90 units, not all of them are defective, but the ones that are need to be sent back so they can find the source of the problem and correct it.

i am very glad to see people with no problems at all. please people with no problems also tell us here because this is getting worse day by day.

also the RMA suggested by Striker even for these machines makes me conscious about new atis. i would personally say the reason for this suggestion if i knew. but i dont care so much as mine will be one of the new shipment. if it has (GOD NO) any problems this ruins everything.

please people with no problems try wolverine and grid and tell us results.

more RMAs... i'm suprised how shady asus is being about this problem...

this is what ken said in another thread... so i'm guessing it is some issue with the hardware, and since most people have had trouble with flickering screens... all signs are pointing to the video cards, or lcd?

Its been 3 weeks now I think, it will be well over a month at this rate before I get it back. Its not due to lack of CS its just due to lack of product, so I cant really blame them.

Also its not like I am the only person in line for a RMA.

As long as my replacement is in perfect condition I will have no complaints, but if the new one has issues I may get a bit frustrated.

mkinasz - Yes you have the exact same issue I had, happened randomly, surfing the net or playing games, or could play Fallout3 for 4 hours straight and no problems. Just give it some time and see if it stops like mine. Mine seemed to stop after all the dam Vista updates were finally installed (slow connections here for downloads). I havent had that happen for over 2 weeks now, and only happened for the first 4 days of me owning it. As I said before, I reflashed the second vid card (figured i had nothing to lose) but couldnt get the 9.4 drivers to install so i reflashed back to the original vBIOS and reistalled the original drivers and still had the problem for 2 more days. Then it just stopped happening (I dont have the choice to RMA right now so I was just going to have to deal with the random stoppages) and has been fine since.

Aye, I thought it might be worth mentioning... It also flickers like crazy on Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 and sometimes it just crashes to the desktop. Same goes for Gears of War. I still managed to finish the games though :D. Hopefully they return my unit in working order.. the worst would be that they say they run it and find nothing and return it as is. The thing is I gave GRID a run again and it crashed after about 2, 3, or 4 races... I hope they test these systems vigorously before returning!

Holy cow 3 weeks :( It is unfortunate indeed. I figured quality control for these units would be top notch... but looks like some of us are still left with a 3000 $ brick :). Are you waiting for a replacement or a repair.

About a month ago RMA my for something minor... DOA speakers. This time around they won't be sending me a new one. They will try and repair it... so it might take a while.. doh!!!

IMO I think Striker has been hinting that these video issues are not the norm for this laptop and Asus is fixing the problems in the latest batch. I also think he is trying to alleviate the the fears for potential new buyers. He is trying to give people hints without breaking his word to his source. I know it has made me feel a little bit better about this laptop even if I have to wait a little longer. :)

Price Alert - Newegg has the w90-x2 for $2199 today..

And I think its wrong they are undercutting the price so much at this point.. If i were a reseller, i would contact Asus and Newegg to complain about their practices.
