I'm not sure if any of you W90VP owners play CSS (Counter Strike Source), but I still play it more than anything (but the wife and I still play Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 quite a bit too). It's just a really fun game and the servers I play on have a great bunch of folks who contribute to making it fun. So if any of you W90Vp owners still play, how does it perform being an older game?

Thanks... and thanks to all of you who contribute information to make this a reall looooong thread :)

What you are describing sounds very much like what was happening to me. Try this:

Download BurnInTest 6.0 Standard Edition 6.0 from http://www.passmark.com/ftp/bitstd.exe

After installation, run it the first time and just click "Continue" for 30 day eval. In the menu, select "Configuration" pick "Test Selection & Duty Cycles". Uncheck everything but "2D Graphics" and click "OK" at bottom. Now under the "Test" menu, select "Start Test Run" (or click the green triangle in the menu bar). Click "Ok" to dismiss the warning that always comes up.

If your computer can survive this 2D test for 15 minutes then it's doing WAY better than mine. Most mine could survive was about 3 minutes before it would crash (and sometimes reboot). The crash usually involved grey lines but sometimes it would be solid grey screen preceeded by a white screen. That seemed to vary.

One other thing you can try is to configure the burnin for all tests EXCEPT the 2D test and if your machine is like mine, it'll do that all day with no problems. I've been able to game for HOURS without issue.

I only experienced the crashes while web surfing which uses the 2D graphics engine. If you get the same results I did, then I recommend RMA.

    Hope you get better results.

Ok first try, got the driver done and it look to be that same problem as with 9.5. Crossfire enabled, but it not really. Im working on it still, if anyone wants the test driver i will post it later.

Dang sorry to hear that. I wish I knew what the root cause was of this problem. I was hoping the newest batch wouldn't have this issue.

This site has a list of all of the Asus service centers, call the nearest one to arrange RMA.
    http://support.asus.com/service/service.aspx?no=407&SLanguage=en-us

djgiron had this issue but his went away after a time. Mine never went away, perhaps give it a few days and see what happens? I actually wonder what would happen if djgiron ran the 2D burnin test.

yep, i'm not a very happy camper right now... i've only had this lappy for a few days - after waiting for it for almost 2 months. also, i just finished installing all the windows updates, microsoft office, and all my games... and i just finished transferring my old files from my old lappy to this one.

i pm'd ken and asked him what he thinks about the matter, but i'm pretty sure he'll end up saying the same thing.

isn't this one of the main reasons people had to RMA their unit? i don't think it'll go away on its own, maybe what djgirion was describing was different in some way...

also, i think i might wait to RMA until the 27th... i'm hoping that if they do have to replace my unit, they'll send me that free upgrade voucher for win7...

this really sucks, i was hoping all the issues would have been fixed after almost a month and a half of delays...

Well, I just tried this and went little over 3 mins.......then nasty grey all over. Called ASUS got a RMA and was told they will "repair" and not replace and that turn around was "about" a week. Torn now what to do, never had any issues, untill I ran the burn in test......and like I a supposed to believe a week turn around.

this makes me wonder if RMA'ing it would fix anything at all.

I went a while with no issues but I was doing gaming pretty much exclusively. I'd been using my Asus 1000HE for internet (this site and facebook, etc) but when I decided to try to make that into a hackintosh, I started using my W90 a LOT more for internet and that's when I started having intermittent gray screens/gray lines of death. It wasn't until I found this 2D test that I was able to reproduce it consistently.

At least now we're armed with a way to reproduce the problem in a reliable manner. Perhaps Ken could prescreen machines before letting them out the door? I have another on preorder with him and I bet he'd be willing to test it before shipping.

sigh.. what are they going to do during the rma? i don't wanna have to deal with the hassle of installing e-wrcked's drivers (which is i why i had ken do it)..

also, i'm wondering how many w90's will actually pass this test... i don't wanna RMA my unit, and then get stuck with the same thing again.. from the sounds of it, lots of people were having issues with 2dgraphics... what makes me think that asus CAN fix this??... seems like wwoods had no prior issues, either... so i'm starting to think this whole thing is just a giant joke.

also, i'm wondering what sparks this issue... i browse the net pretty consistently all day with no issus.. i only seem to get the white/grey screen when it comes out of the screen saver, and i open IE...

i seriously have no in game issues, and little-to-none issues while browsing IE. however, when i run that test.. 2.5 minutes...

I had the same issue with my first W90 (along with a bright red pixel and a bad headphone jack) and they replaced my machine. I assume they might replace the video cards. If they call, I plan to ask them to run that test before sending it back. I hope they call, they have with all of my previous Asus RMAs so I expect they will again this time.

Yeah my browsing didn't cause the problem THAT often just enough to irritate me. I wasn't until I started using more browser intensive sites such as sites using Adobe Flex that I started seeing that happen more often.

i'm making a poll in the asus forum, asking any w90 users to run this test, and see how long they last...

i'm having a hard time finding faith in asus' ability to fix the problem... especially because you had it during your first w90 (so asus was aware of the problem), and even now, the problem is still present (in the newest batch of w90's after a 2 month waiting period...)

also, like you said... it wasn't that big of a problem... so i'm really debating not sending it in.. i would absolutely hate to RMA my unit, get it fixed, run the test, and have it crash in 3 minutes.. that just = waste of time for me..

thanks for the info woods, i used one of your posts in my poll in the asus forum... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=388476 please vote, so others do as well..

if therre are a lot of other people who are having this problem, i will not RMA my unit... especially because mkin has had two rma's and the problem has been present BOTH TIMES, and i just got a lappy from the brand new batcch and i am having the problem, as well... however, if i find out that there are not that many people experiencing a similar problem, i will RMA 100%..

Nice find there, my old unit for sure had 2d or low 3d issues as it never crashed in a demanding game, usually while in windows or internet browsing. This would have been a great test to induce that.

Im almost scared to try it on the new unit as its had no issues so far except when overclocking with that new overclock tool.

Ken might read this but if he doesn't, feel free to pass this along. I tried the following configurations and was able to get the Grey screen/lines by using IE intensively and consistently with the 2D test.

Factory Config default drivers with Master/Slave Vbios
    Master/Master Vbios with default drivers
Master/Master Vbios with 9.4 drivers with EWrecked patch
Master only (slave card pulled) with default drivers
Master only (slave card pulled) with 9.4 drivers patched
Slave card only (flashed with Master vbios) with default drivers
Slave card only (flashed with Master vbios) with 9.4 drivers patched

I also tried 9.5 drivers with a few of those configurations but only 1 card appeared to work and it didn't affect my results.

The only way I could successfully run the 2D test was to switch the driver on both cards (or when I used 1 card) to Standard VGA Adapter and then I was able to run the 2D test forever. (I have a license for that burnin software so I was able to run more than 15 min).

I've also been able to run the 2D test on all of my other machines so I'm pretty confident there isn't a flaw in the test itself.

No hard feelings, you have to earn your good W90 with a RMA like the rest of us :p

Curious though if you open WinFlash what is the flash type of your master card, as that is still the only difference I can see from my old unit and the new one, so makes me think there was a defective batch of cards and this new flash type is a new batch that has been fixed.

    Hey Mike,

Could 'some' of the problem be that the 'TRIAL' of the Standard Edition, does not support 64-bit?

"BurnInTest Standard is 32-bit only, while BurnInTest Professional is 32-bit and native 64-bit."

    Just a thought......

    :)

I'm pretty sure I was running the x64 version but without machine in hand I can't be 100% sure... only 96% sure.
Here is the x64 link http://www.passmark.com/ftp/bitpro_x64.exe
Looks like the 30 day eval works for that as well.

No good, that test crashed me in less than 2 min. Im not sure this is an indication of hardware issues or if the test is just overkill or none compatible.

By default you're getting 50% load. I didn't experiment with scaling that down to see what the trigger threshold was. That could be interesting.

50% load? it was using up all 500mb of video memory it said, I was also browsing the forums while it was running.

I do not think it crashed due to being x86, I think if that was an issue it would have not run at all, but I guess we should investigate to be sure.

I should also run it on my desktop when I get home to see if it crashes my desktop.

I'm pretty sure only 50% of the card's potential graphics power is used but 100% of the available memory is tested. I imagine if you cranked it up to 100% you probably wouldn't be able to browse as well. That's just speculation though......

Also, I tried the 2D test so far with a 8600M, 280GTX, 7800GTX x2 SLI, 8800GTX, Asus 1000HE onboard graphics card. I have a feeling your desktop will pass with flying colors. I wish I had another ATI card to test though.....

yep,,, 64bit version crashed at 1:34 for me

here is the interesting part.. i had hulu.com open, and i was watching some shows when i was running the test. the screen flashed black this time, and i could still hear EVERYTHING from hulu. so i alt+f4 a few times, and guess what? the sound stopped... so the screen is blacking out, but the computer is still working..

sounds like some other issues some other people were having.

Yeah a few times I was able to hit the windows key, hit the right arrow once and then enter to shut down the computer even though I couldn't actually see the screen. Sometimes that didn't work perhaps because it hard froze. But that did mean that occasionally it was just the video that went out.

Nice catch on the Burn in test. It's a bit disheartening to see the new shipments have more problems. I'm hoping this is just a driver problem and not some erratic 2D hardware issue. My W90 will arrive tomorrow and will try this test straight away.

Mine is going on eBay. We had a pretty nice thunderstorm the other day, and the BallNChain pointed out some bulges in the ceiling upstairs. They were filled with water.

Contractor/Roofing bud came over and took a look and I just got off the phone with him. $5000 minimum to re-tile the bad areas. I don't want to take away the promised graduation vacation for my daughter, so a serious rash of toys must go. :(

    Man, I love this thing.

My testing unit failed the burning test program (X64) in less than 2 minutes, the screen went black and system reboot, however, I can still browse internet and watch youtube video no problem.
