sigh, then maybe nothing needs to be adjusted on my cpu? every time the screen goes blank i look in the event manager for something, but nothing out of the ordinary comes up... just a forced shut down...

iono... but like i said, it isn't that big of a problem...

Its safe for me to say that the program is ether taking the cards beyond there limit as they are not stable under a 100% 2d clocks load or it has compatibility/stability issues due to the odd nature of the W90's card setup.

I can say that on my new unit I have none of the flickering I had on the old one, no issues at all so far.

So this means my problem is fixed or the new unit is simply much more stable than the old one and the stuff that messed it up before is now not enough of a load to cause problems.

As long as my machine never fails me under use then I do not care if a stress test can cause it to malfunction, but if I do have issues down the road I am really happy to have that 2 year warranty.

No issues in Photoshoping for me :p Thats probably a high 2d load I would think.

Yeah that's the point I hope to get to.... If I can use the machine normally without problems then i'll be perfectly happy regardless of that stress test. I'm still looking forward to getting my machine back. :)

That's what I think too, I ran the test again and this time I got white screen and screen just feeze, but this time it didn't reboot.

The test result didn't show any errors, it's probably the system freeze before the program can write any error log:

No it didn't pass the test, it failed, the 2nd time I got a white screen instead of black screen. Like Vicous said, the program might have compatibility issue with W90Vp setup.

No as I think that the drivers/bios has nothing to do with this problem, also you can read the post a page or so back, it was already tried with old bios/drivers and even just a single card.

Yes that is a bad gpu I am pretty sure, as my first unit did that.

new one does not, same bios/drivers on the new one as the old one.

I say I had my unit just randomly have a display crash that forced me to hardboot 4 or 5 times while I had it and every time while was while surfing or something easy, never while gaming.

hrm.. well, ken wants to try flashing bios tomorrow.. if not, i guess i'll have to RMA it..

i'm not very happy about having to RMA it though.. i guess i'll have to wait even longer to have a fully functional w90...

vicious - how do you know your new unit doesn't do it? on my unit the crash happens so rarely, so i can't even tell if it is a big issue or not...

Well meaning it has not crashed on me and the one program that always showed the issue I had before was 3dmark Vantage, the jane test loading screen would flicker, now it doesnt.

Well, I wonder if this issue dosent have something to do with the modified desktop mobo Asus used in this thing. I got my RMA back and the paperwork said the error was on the mobo and they replaced it. I was having screen flickers on my first unit as well

by the way I tested my unit out with fraps on several games can anyone compare their results? (Q9000=2.75Ghz)
Crysis Warhead 1900x1080 All maxed no aa or vsync= 10-18 FPS
FarCry 2 1900x1080 All maxed no aa vsync= 23-45 FPS
Burnout Paradise 1900x1080 All maxed no aa or vsync= 90-130 FPS
COD4 1900x1080 all maxed maxed aa= 80-110FPS (Odd drops to like 15fps at random times, but only for a second.)

still, the flashing guide to update the drivers of dual ati's lead to significant improvements over the gaming ?
    thx for replies

hey vicious, i ran the vantage tests...

on the jane test, the screen flickered initially after going full screen to the loading screen, and then didn't flicker at all... same for all the other tests. they seemed to run seemlessly.. i didn't oc for the test, but my gpu score was 8700, and my cpu score was 7600... my 3dmark score was 8457.. this was sort of odd to me, because i heard most people were getting around 10K+... so i went into CCC and underneath the graphic settings tab, there is no option for xfire.... so i'm very confused right now...

i have been talking to ken, and he says there have been installing SP2 might fix it.. as the only time my gets the white screen is after coming out of hibernate/screen saver and i open IE and start to browse. i've put my cpu into sleep/screen saver mode and opened ie and searched to this site (it is funny, the only time the system crashes is when i search for thi site) and haven't gotten any white/grey screens..

i'm really confused to why my lappy is doing this every now and then... i would absolutely hate to RMA this thing, only to find out nothing swas wrong...

edit: more in depth from my 3dmark test...

    gpu test 1: 24.16fps
    gpu test 2: 27.24fps
    cpu test 1: 1007.08plans/s
    cpu test 2: 11.43 steps/s
    feature test 1: 1135.83 gtexels/s
    feature test 2: 5.77 gpixels/s
    feature test 3: 33.65 fps
    feature test 4: 16.02 fps
    feature test 5: 29.29 fps
    feature test 6: 77.69fps

    OK...

This was run with the stock drivers that come with the system, not the 9.4 ones. Also was overclocked to 15% useing the OC tool included, not setfsb

    CPU Score 8393
    Graphics Score 9273

Finished with no tearing or other flaws I could see......

Also note this was the demo version......

hey, how did you install sp2? via windows update, or did you download the sp from microsoft? i'm having trouble installing it... it keeps freezing about half-way through installation...

    http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/software_setup.html

i don't have the crossfire tab... my adapters are linked, though.. but there should be a checkbox to enable/disable xfire..

i think the scores are low, but i'm not sure because i can't use the search function. i remember people using the oc were getting scores of around 10k+, but i can't say that for sure...

so i'm thinking xfire isn't enabled...? that's what i asked a few posts back..

and omg, vista sp2 was a nightmare. it took forever to install that thing... it kept freezing about halfway through the unpack. i have no clue why...

I dont have a crossfire tab either, but I have a ATI Overdrive tab that is enabled. as for the low scores, remember I am not useing the 9.4 drivers, these are the stock drivers that came with the system, not sure if that would make a difference, plus I am only OC'ing it with the tool that comes with ASUS, not setfsb

yeah, but i am using the 9.4 drivers... and our scores are pretty similar (although i didn't use the oc)...

so how do we enable/disable xfire??

i think overdrive is just an oc for the gpu...

hrmm.. maybe somebody with a w90 can shed some light on this?

so does that mean xfire is always on???

i ran gpu-z, and under xfire it says "Enabled (2 GPUs) (unsure on Vista64)"

You guys dont have the crossfire tab in CCC because it was not included in your version. It was included in the win7 version which can be found of the 9.4 or 9.5 Catalyst. If you run the installer, it will only let you install the CCC, which is fine.

As for the vantage scores, its pretty CPU dependant, Mugenski OC his CPU (QX9300) to 3.3 but used stock drivers, and has the record for GPU score. So it shouldnt really matter the drivers, as much as the CPU clock. Your scores do seem a bit low though.

any idea why our scores are so low? i just ran it again at 2.2ghz and got a 3dmark score of 9k, gpu score of 9.2k, and a cpu score of 8.5k...

i thought people were pulling around 10k+...

thanks for the info about xfire; i was thinking it wasn't enabled.. because i remember people saying that the other card in xfire adds a difference of around 2k in vantage... and the only reason i remember is because i asked why it wasn't half and half.

hrmm... i'll use setfsb later and try it at 2.6ghz.. and 0ri0n, where do i check out my card temps in ccc? i can't find that option, either.

its on... download gpu-z and make sure under crossfire it says what mine said..

edit: hrm.. i looked back into the 500-600 pages of this thread, and somebody with an a1 overclocked to 2.6ghz was barely getting a 10k vantage... so maybe it isn't that off?

Your scores are not too low, they are slightly low... but if you are only at 2.2ghz with the q9000... that vantage score is about right. wwoods on the other hand is lower than you with a qx9300, but other factors could come into play like background running processes, windows update, etc. and crossfire is running... or your gpu score would probably be in the 6000s.

CCC can show you your temps, its in the overdrive tab where the meter is on the right. you will have to check for each card though using the dropdown box at the top

Correction... Mugenski wasnt using stock drivers... he was using Ewrecked's modded infs with the 9.4 :D

So maybe 9k in vantage with stock drivers is about right.

kim, the higher scores are from ppl that are way OC'ing their systems. I would give the screen out issues a couple of days, mine stopped after 4 days of owning it, and I tried everything to fix it. I would have RMA'd too if it would have been possible (on a remote base right now, outgoing mail was 3 weeks away) so I was just going to use it until I could ship it home when it just stopped having any issues. I can understand the frustration too, I had just installeed the OCZ (which i imaged) and the 500GB, transferred my movies, installed PS3 and the game I had been waiting to play FOREVER (Fallout 3 = fantastic game btw) then the issues started . . . all that work and was going to have to send it back haha

    Hello guys,

look at this, it's a new driver for the 4870 x2 but only for vista x86.

I found it at this side:

    http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=ati 4870 x2

perhaps we can modd the driver?

looks like you modded that inf yourself. I grabbed all the vista ones on the cat site and they list PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9441&SUBSY_24401682 which is the desktop card.

Im pretty sure if we mod this it will have the same effect as our original 9.5 outcome... probably not worth the shot
