...If I would buy a top-end lappy now ..I would go for the M17x just because of the SLI and 17" .....but anyway I have my W90 ~~~ I am happy with it( one thing M17x don't come with ~~ the bag and mouse ....oh yeah , the 5.1 sound too gotta love that hehe) I would like to see asus support the W90 because it does have a really nice chasis ( come on now ....you have 2 Video cards , a 5.1 sound , a bunch of USB ns screen , next thing I would think of adding is the back-lit keyboard the G51 have. ) I don't mind see next-gen graphic cards being able to install on these MXM 2.1 babies... hehe

Yeah, they said a few times they wished it had a quad core processor, and many of us have a q9000 or have installed a qx9300, so you are probably correct.

Anyone who self installed the QX9300...is it worth 500 dollars or so to buy the cpu and worth voiding the warranty to upgrade from the Q9000?

Not for the average person, but if your an enthusiast with the need for more cpu power and have the budget to get it, it can pay off for you.

that's why i'm asking about the q9200. it is half the price of the qx9300. running stock at 2.4 ghz and may overclock to 3.0 is a powerful cpu and is cheap.

Only feedback I got on the Q9200 is that they were not overclocking well, but that was just one person maybe they had a bad chip.

Does any other W90 owner here experience any screen tearing when running Vantage and other games? I've seem to be having this issue in a couple of them, but only during the loading screen in Vantage...

    Could be drivers ichime?

Im looking into this machine at the moment since the UK seems to have plenty of online sellers as well as asuslaptop.co.uk,

One thing thats bugging me is that the GPU states on all these sites, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 1024 MB Dedicated , am i to assume this is single only?

Or does this count for both GPU?

The flicker that occurs in Vantage is what my first unit did. I assumed it to be a defective card and RMA'ed for it.

My 2nd unit did not have that problem.

I see. And it sucks b/c I bought it used so I doubt I can weasel my way into a RMA. Strangely enough, the user I bought it from just had it RMA'd with the GPUs being replaced according to ASUS. Oh well...

You can definitely still RMA it Ichime, just not sure how they will feel about that E8435 in there or if they will even notice it. Doubt it would be a problem though... once they see the serial number on it, they will know who they are dealing with, and will just get right to work.

They replaced both cards too, as the flash type on both of them are different than the previous ones, so not sure what the outcome would be if you were to RMA. Hopefully you wouldnt have to wait as long as I did to get it back.

would you be up for swapping the gpus and seeing if that makes a difference? meaning flip-flopping them in the opposite slots, making the other card primary? I wonder if it has anything to do with the secondary, as it you disable crossfire (in ccc, not bios... i think its the ccc from the win 7 9.4 driver) the tearing that i experienced in the crysis loading pages went away.

EDIT: sorry for the double post... im super tired and thought i was editing the previous post.

ichime if you do RMA it, i hope you don't have to wait 3 weeks like me. Asus better have my laptop done next week. it is just bs to spend 3 weeks on repairing a brand new laptop.

Yeah, I'll be RMAing it, i'll give them a call tomorrow or monday if they're not available on the weekends. I thought it was a driver issue, but I tried many different configurations, and it's still the same problem.

Pretty sure they mean for both, and are adding them up. A page back or so from your post theres a link to a review of the model being sold on those UK sites, and they mention that its dual radeaons as well.

9.7's will not work properly unless they are modded. Currently the only modded drivers available are the 9.4's. See Vicious's guide here:

9.7 do work except CrossFire isn't working, but I couldn't get CrossFire working with Vicious' drivers either.

If Crossfire isn't working then the drivers don't work. Yes, you can run off one card with abysmal performance and loss of many functions but I wouldn't call that working. The 9.4's are running on many W90's flawlessly (i.e. Crossfire works and CCC is fully functional). You must have done something wrong or you have a bad card. Device manager should show two 4870X2M.

Device manager shows a yellow exclamation mark over the other card and says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". Both cards are working on Vista however.

1gb vram was just too nice to pass up!

    Ship date = August 3rd

I got it with 2gb ram and p8600 which I'll upgrade to qx9300 es from shirley and 4gb mushkin from newegg

I'll post up benchmarks when I get it!

This might have been asked previously, has anyone tried to install ram with 1033mhz? If so, any noticable increase in performance? (forgive my noob questions, don't have mine yet and just like asking questions about it).

Ram speed is locked, installing faster ram will still have it run at the same old speed.

    Hey VIC,
here is how i got it to work....
go to control panel then uninstall CCC (including everything)...
then use drivercleaner to finish the job ( i select every ATI names in list)...
restart your laptop, then install the stock CCC from disk..
Reboot again then follow your own guide... everything should work fine...
    Hope it helped...
on my laptop i get both cards to work and just ran 11 500 on vantage..( CPU qx9300 @ 2.7Gh, GPUs @ 590/990)
Once again i own a european W90 and i have none of the issues you guys keep talking about...
    Doope.
P.S: i ran the AMD gpu tool to see the max on my cards and i got the following results 610/1000...

I can install the Windows 7 Mobility 9.7 CCC on Vista 64, but the Desktop Properties screen is greyed out. If I install the Cat 9.7 drivers (modded Cat 9.7 Vista driver) everything works except Crossfire. Crossfire screen is there and shows enabled, but it's not. GPU-Z says crossfire is available but disabled.

Very frustrating trying to figure this out :)

Also dont forget to test, run 3dmark Vantage and give the gpu score.

More than once somebody had it saying "enabled" only to find in game they only had 1 card working.

First you must confirm that your cards are both flashed as master. Uninstall previous driver and CCC if they exist(I think here is where you got troubled). Then install both 9.7 driver and CCC by the standard method. Finally install 9.4 driver by VIC's method and enjoy the power of crossfireX in win7 :p
